JANUARY 2021

#BrookwoodStrong Welcome back, I truly hope you had a healthy and happy winter break with your family! I hope everyone was able to safely enjoy the holiday season and was able to spend some quality time with those closest to you. We know this past year has been a difficult road, but we celebrate our growth and successes, both big and small. We faced many struggles this year and we are deeply grateful for each one of you. Every day of learning brings us joy and underscores what matters most-our students. As we return from winter break, I want to take a moment and thank the entire Brookwood Jr. High parent community for your partnership in this crazy year of educating our students. This year is challenging enough, I couldn’t imagine doing this work in a community that was not as supportive as all of you are. I am also so proud of our students for persevering in such a challenging learning environment for the first third of the school year, and I am eternally grateful to the adults that love and support them as they continue to learn and grow. While we continue on this path of remote learning, student engagement matters. Lack of participation by your child even if online can be marked as an absence. Please be sure your child is ready to learn, has their camera on, and is sitting up properly with all needed materials ready!

Our goal continues to be keeping students engaged during remote learning. If your child is receiving a “D” or an “I” in any of their classes, they will need to remain on camera while the teacher is on live teaching. If they are not on camera, we will be contacting you to let you know your child is not engaged in the lesson. Students need to be present and participating in order to be engaged and for learning to take place. We want our students to be successful! We understand students may be struggling with online learning. We can hold a Student Support Intervention Meeting (SSI) for your child with parents, administrators and all your child’s teachers remotely at any time during the quarter. To request an SSI Meeting, please email Ms. Marcus, Assistant Principal at pmarcus@ brookwood167.org. By working together, we can create a plan for success for your child! It is important to stay connected and it is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and discuss their strengths and areas for improvement. If your child needs an electronic device, or if you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at the school number (708) 758-5252, by email jlarson@ brookwood167.org or by cell phone, (708) 362-0115. Sincerely, Jill Larson, Principal

Peer Mediation/Conflict Resolution Training 7th Graders participated in Conflict Resolution/Peer Mediation Training remotely during their Science class December 10th thru December 17th. Research shows that when conflict occurs in middle school environments, students affected often lack the developmental maturity and interpersonal skills necessary to ensure healthy outcomes without adult guidance. This virtual training program is designed to teach students how to manage conflicts more constructively by learning about conflict resolution and peer mediation procedures. It is our hope that once trained, students will have the needed skills to help resolve any conflicts they might encounter throughout life. Students did a great job with participating in this important program and they showed much growth from start to finish.

Virtual Family Reading Night Brookwood Junior High School’s Virtual Family Reading Night was held on Wednesday, December 9th, from 6:007:00 p.m. A Google Classroom was created and a link was posted for students and their families to join. When families logged on at 6:00 p.m., administrators and staff greeted them and explained they would be participating in a Reading Fortnite and Christmas Themed, Escape Rooms. After a quick review of context clues by Mr. Walsh, ELA Teacher, each family was put into a breakout room to begin their escape. Two staff members were assigned to each breakout room, to help families in case they got stuck or if they needed help. Two Reading games were raffled off during the night, Apples to Apples and Taboo. Reading resources were included on the Google Classroom for families to use and the links were also posted for the escape rooms and made available for families to continue to use after the event ended. Everyone had a great time and each student that participated received a book. Our goal is to continue to have one Virtual Family Math and Reading Night a month.

Districtwide Online Spelling Bee

Students please participate in our DISTRICTWIDE ONLINE SPELLING BEE ALL STUDENTS are invited. Study the list of words from your teachers for the Classroom Spelling Bee which will be held in each school in January! Dates to be determined! I also posted the words on my class dojo, and your teachers posted them in their class dojos as well.

Here are some Studying suggestions: • Start by studying the list that is closest to your grade level. • Say the word, spell the word, then say the word again. • Practice with an adult. Practice by yourself. Keep practicing!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
