MARCH 2021
#BrookwoodStrong As we start the second half of the school year, I hope this message finds you healthy and doing well. It has been a challenging year, but we are moving forward with returning to a sense of normalcy. This month, we will be welcoming back students into our building with safety precautions in place. This shift in learning models has required a lot of planning and changes. As we begin the second half of the school year, I want to remind you how important it is that students attend class (whether in person or remotely), complete work assignments, and participate in class and in any school events we are able to host. Maintaining connections to classmates and to Brookwood Jr. High School, will help your child succeed and prepare them to move back into the building either this school year or in the fall. Parents we need your help! Please log on and complete our 5 Essentials Survey. We highly encourage you to complete the 5 Essentials Survey. Your feedback matters! We use this feedback to develop school improvement plans and activities to make continuous improvement. The data needs to reflect the voices of our parents in order to address/validate school concerns or support for existing programs. Your honest responses are confidential and are needed to better inform our upcoming goals and strategies we will be implementing for the 2021-2022 school year. Skype A Scientist On Friday, February 19th, during Ms. Baker’s Science/STEM classes, 8th grade Brookwood Jr. High School students Skyped with Dr. Lynne A. Kvapil. Students were very excited as Dr. Kvapil is a field archaeologist who works in Greece and is also a professor at Butler University in Indianapolis. Her work focuses on farming, pottery, and burials in prehistoric Greece, specifically the Late Bronze Age. As a field archaeologist she has encountered and worked with non-prehistoric material as well. Students learned about her journey of becoming an archaeologist and the many adventures she has had such as excavating the site of Mycenae. This was an awesome opportunity for our students as they have recently started a scope on the geological history of Earth and are learning about the law of superposition, rock strata and the geological scale. Our students had a great time and asked many interesting questions such as “What is a dig?”, “What is the most interesting item you have found?”, “Can there be ancient diseases still present on bodies?”,etc. This presentation allowed students to connect the curriculum to real world experiences. f
