We do understand that some students may be experiencing some “bumps” along the way. Those students and parents experiencing difficulties with technology can reach out to our Brookwood Technology Helpdesk by calling (708) 300-3553 or email our help desk: helpdesk@brookwood167.org Please leave a detailed message with your name, phone number and the issue you are having with your device. School starts promptly at 8:30 a.m. Research shows that high levels of academic achievement are linked to student attendance and engagement. Our focus this year is to limit student absences and tardies as they can directly impact your child’s education. We welcome all parent communication and will be timely in our response to your concerns. If your child is experiencing difficulty in his/her learning, please contact us immediately. We want to be proactive in reaching a solution instead of being reactive. All teachers offer extra help to students. Please encourage your child to ask for help. If your child needs an electronic device, or if you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at the school number (708) 758-5252, by email jlarson@brookwood167.org or by cell phone, (708) 362-0115.

NWEA MAP TESTING Every year Brookwood School District 167 assesses student skill levels in reading and in math by administering the [MAP] Assessment. We use NWEA Map as our local District-Wide Assessment to measure student growth. Students are given a Fall Benchmark Assessment, a Winter Benchmark Assessment and a Spring Benchmark Assessment. The data from this assessment provides the district and each individual teacher with very important information that supports the planning and development of instructional lessons to maximize the skill level of every student for optimum academic growth. The testing window is scheduled for the first two weeks of October. We are planning to administer the assessment to students in Grades 3 through 8 only onsite or remotely based on parent preference. To administer the assessment onsite, we will be scheduling only small groups of students with the required social distancing and masks. The students would need to attend two (2) sessions - one for reading and one for math - on two (2) different days. We would ask that parents bring their student to school for the testing sessions. To administer the assessment remotely, we will schedule small groups of students through a Google Meet session with a proctor. f

Red Ribbon Week October 23rd - 31st

RED RIBBON WEEK, is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program. Red Ribbon Week was started after the death of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who in 1985 was brutally tortured and murdered by drug traffickers he was investigating in Mexico. As a tribute to SA Camarena, the wearing of a red ribbon was started to show opposition to drugs. Wearing red ribbons during the month of October continues to represent our pledge to live drug free and honors the sacrifice of all who have lost their lives in the fight against drugs. Brookwood Jr. High School will celebrate Red Ribbon Week by raising student awareness of living a drug free life. We encourage you to take this opportunity to talk to your kids about drugs. Follow #DEARedRibbon on Twitter.

Fire Prevention Month 2020 October is Fire Prevention Month! The goal of Fire Prevention Month (and week October 4th – 10th ) is to raise fire safety awareness, and help ensure your home and family has a plan and is ready for the unexpected. In 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) named the second week of October Fire Prevention Week in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871. Today, we celebrate Fire Prevention Week and Month by raising fire safety awareness and educating families, students and communities across the United States. During this month, fire departments provide education to their communities, and encourage parents and loved ones to practice fire safety and whole home safety. The NFPA’s 2020 campaign for Fire Safety Month is “Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen.” At First Alert, we are proud to support their mission and this year’s theme to ‘Be Ready for the Unexpected’, especially while cooking. For Fire Safety Month this year, First Alert is urging families to improve their home’s safety. Be ready at home by installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, as well as having fire extinguishers at home. First Alert is dedicated to helping protect what matters most because a home emergency can happen at any time, and we want to help you be ready. Did You Know? Fire Prevention week is the perfect time talk with your whole family about fire safety – include testing alarms, changing the batteries or upgrading to 10-year sealed battery alarms, how to use a fire extinguisher and escape route planning. • • • • • • •

Fire Prevention Month 2020 Are You Ready at Home? First Alert has been protecting homes and families since 1958. We urge you to practice whole home safety, so you and your family are ready for the unexpected this Fire Prevention Week and Month . Having functioning alarms installed throughout your home is the first line of defense for fire prevention. They work around the clock to provide your family an early alert in the event of an emergency, providing you time to safely escape. Smoke and CO alarms should be placed on every level of the home, including the basement, as well as inside and outside each bedroom. Fire extinguishers should also be placed on every level of the home, especially in the kitchen and garage.

Kitchen Fire Safety Do’s and Don’ts! For many, the kitchen is a space to be creative and cook meals that bring the family together, and yet for others it’s a space in their home or apartment they barely use. For some they are just learning how to cook and navigate the kitchen. Regardless of how experienced you may be in the kitchen, accidents happen. You can help reduce your risk of starting a kitchen fire by following these cooking safety tips, as well as ensuring your home is well-equipped with the necessary fire safety equipment, like a residential fire extinguisher.

Fire Prevention Month 2020 • Always Remain in the Kitchen When Cooking Unattended cooking is the number one cause of home fires according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). If you are simmering, roasting, baking or frying food on the stove or oven, it is important that an adult remains in the kitchen at all times to keep an eye on the food so it does not burn. You should also use a timer when cooking to help ensure you don’t lose track of time. This is especially important for beginner cooks. • Keep The Kitchen Free From Clutter Remove items that do not belong in the kitchen to avoid any additional fire hazards. Also be mindful of kitchen materials that are flammable and can easily start fires such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, towels, curtains, or even excess food packaging and keep them away from the stove-top. It is helpful to give everything a specific place in the kitchen to help reduce the risk of it being left out and catching fire to help ensure the kitchen remains a safe place. • Unplug or Turn Off Your Appliances Unplug any counter-top appliance when they are not in use, like toasters and coffee machines. This will help reduce the risk of a fire starting. As soon as you are finished cooking your food, turn off the appliance that you are using. You should also clean off leftover dust, food crumbs, and grease from your stove-top after use. • Install Reliable Protection Smoke alarms should be on every level of your home, as well as outside of each sleeping area and in every bedroom. Remember, smoke alarms should be installed at least 10 feet away from cooking appliances. If you are cooking something that involves a lot of smoke, you may be tempted to temporarily disable your house smoke alarms, however this leaves your home and family unprotected from fires. Test your alarms monthly to ensure they are functioning properly and replace the batteries every six month. Residential fire extinguishers should also be placed on each level of your home, as well as in the kitchen and garage. Keep your kitchen fire extinguisher or fire extinguishing spray close by so it is easily accessible in the event of a fire. Cooking accidents happen, so it is important to be prepared when you forget the pizza in the oven or burn the bacon on the stove top. Follow these four tips to remain safe in the kitchen while protecting your home and family. f
