FEBRUARY 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians, On behalf of the BMS staff, we would like to thank you for attending our Parent-Teacher Conferences on January 28, 2021. We are grateful for your continued support as we get through remote/virtual learning with your children. Next month is “Dental Health Month”. Please make sure you get your children’s dental exams in before the return to learn start date. Additionally, please schedule your child’s school physicals so they are able to attend the “in-person” instruction if that is the option that you have chosen. If students are not up to date with their school physical and immunizations, they will not be able to take advantage of the “in-person” learning. We are excited about our Black History Month activities for next Month. Our theme this year is “Hidden Figures of Black History from A to Z”. We have activities scheduled for students each day and some virtual field trips and assemblies as well. We are excited of what we are creating to put out for our students and community.

PLEASE TAKE CARE, BE SAFE AND STAY HEALTHY! f

BROOKWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT 167 HAS GIVEN A TENTATIVE DATE FOR STUDENTS’ RETURN TO SCHOOL! We are eagerly awaiting the sound of children’s voices and the familiar ringing of laughing and engaged students echoing in the hallways. Our teachers and parents have remained resilient throughout this process. Although we do plan to be in the classroom very soon, it is vital to maximize all learning spaces and opportunities.

Here are a few tips for parents to put in their toolbox to assist with Remote Learning: • Set up a homework schedule • Check your child’s work at the end of each day for completion and effort • Check PowerSchool at the end of each week • Charge IPAD/IMAC nightly in a secure location • ClassDojo is your best friend ;-) • Help your child with difficult assignments • Create goals and incentives for your child • Participate in virtual meets (parent/teacher conferences, family math/reading night) With the right foundation in place, there is no limit for our students’ success. BMS commends each and every parent/guardian for your partnership in creating balance, consistency, and support for our children.

TOGETHER WE WILL REMAIN #BROOKWOODSTRONG! R. Mitchell | Assistant Principal

MS. MANGAN ELA

OUR TEACHERS!

During the month of February 5th graders will study expository text. We will continue to determine the main idea and details, ask and answer questions, and cite evidence from the text.

Students will

become familiar with text features and why authors use them.

In the process, we will learn about the formation of snow crystals and about a group of people who rescue and rehabilitate a dolphin. Expository text explains something to the reader. It is one of my

MR. WESLEY SOCIAL STUDIES

favorite genres because I know I will always learn something new, and I know our 5th graders will, too!

Social Study Students will be learning about the colonies in North America. Many of the immigrants left their homelands due to political and economic problems. These people were seeking religious freedom and economic opportunities. Europeans and American Indians often had different points of view. The students will learn about the colonization of America and its sometimes-devastating consequences. f

MS. EASON MATH

OUR TEACHERS!

Math students are currently working on long division. Please review multiplication and division facts to help them with long division. Our upcoming lesson will be Fractions i.e. Finding the Greatest Common factor, reducing fractions, adding fractions with like and unlike denominators, least common denominator. Students should be practicing multiplication facts and division facts daily at least 10 to 15 minutes per day. Also, we will continue to work on geometry.

MS. MILLER-COOPER SCIENCE Science students will continue to study the interactions of living and non-living things within an ecosystem. We will then dive deeper into the role of humans and their impact on our global ecosystems. We will begin an Endangered Species project, whereby students research the effects of human behaviors on the populations of the world’s most vulnerable species.

MS. BRYLEWSKI MATH

OUR TEACHERS!

In February we will be learning about ratios and rates! This is one of my favorite topics to teach because of their application to real life situations; next time you’re out shopping point out how many ratios/rates you see! Miles per gallon, price per ounce are only a few examples. How many more can you find? Or make some hot chocolate and see how the taste changes when you change the ratio of chocolate to milk! Lastly, remind students to stay on track with their Carnegie Learning assignments in www.carnegielearning.com

MS. HORN RESOURCE/ DO THE MATH February is the beginning of a new learning Module for the Math Intervention students. They will begin a new Do the Math Workbook for multiplication. Lessons 1-5 introduce multiplication through the game of Circles and Stars. Playing Circles and Stars will help students understand that multiplication can be thought of as combining equal groups and is related to addition when the same number is added multiple times. They will become aware that multiplication is commutative, example 4 x 3 = 12 and 3 X 4 = 12. Also, please provide time to practice basic multiplication facts with flashcards and viewing the unlimited online multiplication videos for skill reinforcement. f

MS. SEYLLER SCIENCE

OUR TEACHERS!

In 6th grade Science we will be starting February with a new chapter, Influences of Weather and Climate. This chapter will piggyback off of our last chapter, the Weather Cycle. Students will investigate and identify the relevant components of the system, with inputs and outputs, including: The rotating Earth. the atmosphere. the ocean, including the relative rate of thermal energy transfer of water compared to land or air. Continents and the distribution of landforms on the surface of Earth. Global distribution of ice. Distribution of living things. Energy. Radiation from the sun as an input. Thermal energy that exists in the atmosphere, water, land, and ice.

MR. RAB ART The 6th grade students will be moving on to Music Appreciation with Ms. Neely for both Quarters 3 and 4. It has been great having them all in class! Quarter 3 begins Art Appreciation for the 5th grade students! I am super excited to have the 5th graders for a whole semester of art. We will begin by discussing the fantastic artists of the Harlem Renaissance and also begin our first few art projects. One of our projects will be slightly experimental as all the 5th grade art students will be able to collaborate and contribute to create one large work of art together. f

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The close of the 2nd quarter saw our students reach tremendous levels of physical fitness! February will be a month for us to collect data from the students in regards to their ability to perform a number of physical activities (pushups, sit-ups, plank, burpees, etc.). With these initial scores, we will be able to track growth throughout the month and for the remainder of the school year. We are grateful for the effort the students have put forth thus far, and we are excited to continue on this fitness journey with them!!
