As we enter the New Year please keep in mind that there may be changes coming soon with the return to school plan. We “thank you” for participating with the Gingerbread Drive-By Pick Up. It was great seeing you and the students. We’ve also enjoyed the pictures that were shared of the Gingerbread Houses you made with your families. The 2020 year was filled with many momentous moments from sorrow to happiness and a great deal of change as we dealt with Covid-19. Please remember to follow the guidelines and suggestions given to keep you and your family safe. Remember we want to go home to hug our family each day.
Please remind your child to do the following in preparation to return to remote learning: ● • Charge your device each night; and during brain breaks and lunch breaks; • Attend all classes on time; • Complete all assignments during class and after class if needed; • Communicate with their teacher for more time to complete assignment if needed; • Participate in class; by answering questions, turning cameras on and being responsive. f

SEL RIPPLE EFFECT: EDUCATING STUDENTS SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY WHAT IS SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL)? SEL is a process wherein individuals learn to acquire the tools, knowledge, and skill sets so that they can: • Understand and manage their emotions; • Set and achieve positive goals; • Feel and show empathy for others; • Establish and maintain positive relationships; • Make responsible decisions. Brookwood Middle School students have been experiencing what we will call the “Ripple Effect” every morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Ripples is an evidence based, learner directed, trauma informed program that provides our students with personalized technology to address non-academic barriers to school readiness and success. SEL provides a base for students to safely and positively learn the skills needed to enhance students’ ability to succeed in school, careers, and life. BMS students will complete tiered interventions that cover universal SEL topics such as establishing responsibility and dealing with emotions; Ripples will also cover character education, strategies and tools to prevent academic failure, and violence prevention. Ms. Miller-Cooper Science Students will continue the unit that we started in December entitled Matter & Energy Flow in an Ecosystem. Students have gained an understanding of the important role that plants (producers) have in making the first food, and how that food energy moves through other organisms (consumers and decomposers) in an ecosystem. They will further study the cycling of other matter (particles) that occurs on Earth, as well as, the various types of ecosystems that exist on our planet.

Welcome back! I hope everyone is rested, relaxed, and ready to learn! This January we will be starting off with some rational number review after the long Winter Break. Wrapping up fractions, we will move into decimal operations. We should be more than ready for our next MAP test as well. I can’t stress enough the importance of getting assignments done on carnegielearning.com. Students have assignments daily! If they cannot finish in the allotted independent practice time then hopefully they can log in for 10-20 minutes after school to ensure they don’t fall behind.

OUR TEACHERS!
Welcome back Brookwood Families and Students! Upon returning to school, we will review and wrap up The Water Cycle. Once completed we will have finished up 4 scopes in STEMscopedia: Cells, Anatomy of a cell, Bodies and Systems, and The Water Cycle. Next up is Influences of Weather and Climate. Perfect timing for the cold weather I’m sure we will be up against! The investigate phenomena, designed to help engage students in working towards the goal of figuring out why or why not something happens, is “What causes locations on Earth to have different climates”? Students will build their knowledge and understanding of the phenomena as they move through the scope.
MR. RAB ART The 6th graders have been learning about sculpture and 3D art. When we return from break we will be creating our own 3D sculptures at home with materials we have on hand. From there we will have a little time to discuss photography and take our own photographs before the students transition to Music Appreciation for quarters 3 and 4. It has been a delight having the 6th graders for two whole quarters and getting to discuss art and create art with them as well.

MS. CROWEL M180 Happy New Year! In January 2021, Math 180 students will continue to work on strategies for multiplication. Students will concentrate on the area model to represent multiplication and then multiply using place value and the Distributive Property. The area model visually represents multiplication and builds conceptual understanding. This is a stepping stone for students to prepare to multiply decimals, find areas of figures and solve real-world mathematical problems. Remember to complete 5 minutes of Brain Arcade each day and 20 minutes of Math 180 Software.
