MARCH 2021
Dear Parents/Guardians, We have had an absolutely amazing month learning about Hidden Figures in Black History. Hopefully you enjoyed our culminating Virtual Black History Program. This year we wanted to educate the students about prominent African Americans that do not get their due diligence, or accolades over time, hence becoming Hidden Figures in history. Students put together an A to Z Google Slide about things they learned this month, each day they watch a video slide presentation about “Someone You Should Know”, and they’ve contributed to some rich conversations around some difficult topics. Each week we held an all-school Kahoot trivia game around some of the facts that they learned each week. I must say, I’ve learned about so many people that I hadn’t even heard of. We plan to move this high engagement, energy and excitement into another themed month next month (Women’s History Month), so stay tuned. Our return to learn in-person start date has been pushed back due to the health metrics. The new date for those who chose to send their children back to school in-person is March 16th, 2021. Student will not be in session on Monday, March 15th, 2021 because we are using that day as a planning day. Although we are already getting organized for the return of our Timberwolf Pack, we want to give teachers and staff time to practice and review routines, as well as practice concurrent teaching (teaching with virtual students and students in person). f

BROOKWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT 167 SCHOOL IN-PERSON IS MARCH 16TH, 2021! We are eagerly awaiting the sound of children’s voices and the familiar ringing of laughing and engaged students echoing in the hallways. Our teachers and parents have remained resilient throughout this process. Although we do plan to be in the classroom very soon, it is vital to maximize all learning spaces and opportunities.
Here are a few tips for parents to put in their toolbox to assist with Remote Learning: • Set up a homework schedule • Check your child’s work at the end of each day for completion and effort • Check PowerSchool at the end of each week • Charge IPAD/IMAC nightly in a secure location • ClassDojo is your best friend ;-) • Help your child with difficult assignments • Create goals and incentives for your child • Participate in virtual meets (parent/teacher conferences, family math/reading night) With the right foundation in place, there is no limit for our students’ success. BMS commends each and every parent/guardian for your partnership in creating balance, consistency, and support for our children.
TOGETHER WE WILL REMAIN #BROOKWOODSTRONG! R. Mitchell | Assistant Principal

MS. EASON MATH
OUR TEACHERS!
5th Grade math students have concluded long division. Students have made progress with dividing whole numbers. We will be working on fractions. Students have already learned how to find the greatest common factors and how to simplify fractions. Next we will learning how to compare, add, and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators. We will learn about coordinate points( Geometry). It is imperative that students practice multiplication facts daily for 5 to 10 minutes. Most of the skills that the student’s are learning centers around multiplication.
MS. MILLER-COOPER SCIENCE Fifth grade science students are continuing to learn about the environment and the interactions between living and nonliving things. We will be taking a good look at the negative impacts that we, as humans, have on the environment. This is called our Carbon Footprint. Please ask your student questions about how humans have impacted the earth (Great Pacific Garbage Patch, Global Warming, Endangered Species) and what we can do to help improve the environment. Please ask them to share with you about composting!

The initial lessons 1 through 5 introduced the multiplication game of “Circle and Stars” to provide practice for single digit multiplication. During March the focus will shift to problem solving using groups of related items and word problems using multiplication equations. After five (5) lessons on a specific skill, students will complete a skill check Quiz called “Show What You Know” to evaluate comprehension. Finally, students will utilize a variety of math tools such as, multiplication flashcards, number cubes, multiplication bingo, and line grids to increase their multiplication fluency. f

MS. SEYLLER SCIENCE
OUR TEACHERS!
6th grade students will be focusing on Earths Systems Interactions Cause Weather. Emphasis will be on how patterns vary by latitude, altitude, and geographic land distribution. As well as, emphasis of atmospheric circulation is on the sunlight-driven latitudinal banding, the Coriolis effect, and resulting prevailing winds; emphasis of ocean circulation is on the transfer of heat by the global ocean convection cycle, which is constrained by the Coriolis effect and the outlines of continents. Students will continue to use Google Classroom as well as STEMscopes to expand their knowledge.
MR. RAB ART The 5th graders began learning about the quilts of Gee’s Bend, Alabama that started in the 1800’s and still continues today. Next, students will solve division problems with dividends less than 100 by using related multiplication facts. Finally, students will interpret remainders by using models to understand division with remainders and interpret the meaning of the quotient and remainder. Remember to complete five (5) minutes of Brain Arcade each day and twenty (20) minutes of Math 180 Software.
