HICKORY BEND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL As we enter November, we look parents of their child’s progress and forward to continuing strengthening collaboratively plan for their future

NOVEMBER IS HERE... The colors of the leaves are changing, but the smiles on the faces of our All-Stars still remain! October was met with the start of more afterschool clubs, the return of field trips, and data-driven instruction to meet the needs of our students. Students are becoming more independent and acclimated to the school environment. As a result we are celebrating progress both academically and in their social-emotional learning.

TECHNOLOGY HELPLINE If your child is having any technology problems connecting to their teacher’s Google Classroom, please contact our help desk at (708) 300-3553 or email our help desk: helpdesk@brookwood167.org What is ClassDojo? Reporting of Absence(s): Parents must call the school to report their child absent before 8:30 a.m. The number for reporting absences is (708) 758-5190. Official attendance will be reported every morning at 9:00 a.m. If your child joins a teacher’s classroom late, they will be marked tardy in PowerSchool, and you will be notified through the Principal’s ClassDojo.

ClassDojo is a school communication platform that teachers, students, and families use every day to build close-knit communities by sharing what’s being learned in the classroom home through photos, videos, and messages. *Students and parents will be linked to their class through a code provided by the teacher* ClassDojo is actively used in 90% of U.S. K-8 schools. ClassDojo is a free app that helps build amazing classroom and school communities. Teachers give feedback to students for any skill, like “Working Hard” and “Being Curious.”

ANTI-BULLY AWARENESS With courage, honesty, and commitment, our All-Star school took a stand and promised to be a Friend, not a Bully. In addition to understanding the power of words to either make people feel crushed or cared for, our students took time to identify their own unique qualities and give themselves a special name. Some said "Hello, I am Smart" while others said "Hello, I am Kind." It is important that we teach our children the power of self-advocacy and help them to realize their own special gifts, talents, and potential. Our All-Stars culminated Anti-Bully Week by signing a Kindness Contract where again we reflected upon how to be a friend and not a bully. Hickory Bend is on a mission to make the world a brighter place, one shining All-Star at a time.

From the mobile app, parents view their child’s feedback, and can message directly with teachers and school leaders. Please join my ClassDojo so you can stay informed on what is happening at Longwood School. If you would like to join, please accept the invitation that we emailed to you or texted you, or contact the school at (708) 7584520, email, rdubose@brookwood167. org. All you will need to provide is your cell phone number or email address.

The All-Star Staff and Students came dressed in their finest costumes, t-shirts, masks, and even some homemade construction-paper outfits. Music led the way as the “trains” travelled through the school collecting treats at the various stations. Many, many, many thanks to those who donated treats for our celebration.
