KINDNESS... EMPATHY... This works PERFECTLY into our goal of making Hickory Bend a Bully-Free Zone. We are focused on preventing bullying daily by helping our students understand the role of compassion, kindness, and empathy. Compassion involves understanding and caring about the feelings and well-being of others. As a fundamental component of anti-bullying efforts, kindness promotes a positive and inclusive environment while discouraging behaviors that involve cruelty, discrimination, or harassment.

Not only does bullying disrupt the school environment, but carrying the weight of bullying can have life-long adverse effects. Our All-Stars are not only rising to the top academically, but they are also learning how to be good people, do good in our world, and have a lasting positive effect on our community.

POWERSCHOOL At PowerSchool, we believe that for students to succeed, they need to feel connected to learning in a personal way.

All Longwood teachers use an online grading system called PowerSchool that they update every Thursday. We encourage you to check your child’s progress regularly. This program is entirely confidential; therefore, you will need an access username and password to see your child’s progress. If you need your username and/or password, please get in touch with the school office at (708) 758-4520. A PowerSchool app for your cellular phone makes it easy for parents to stay updated on their child’s progress.

After School Matters!

Our afterschool activities are the place to be! Violin, Sensational Singers Choir, book clubs, Number Wizards, Drama Club, and the Lego Club are fun ways for our students to remain engaged at Hickory Bend. After-school activities play a vital role in a child’s overall development, offering a well-rounded education beyond the traditional classroom setting. They provide a safe, supportive environment for personal growth, skill development, and pursuing passions, making them an integral part of a student’s educational journey. Club opportunities change throughout the year. If your child is not currently involved, please stay tuned for coming opportunities.

VISITORS If you need to come into the school for any safety reasons, you must have a current Driver’s License that will be checked in our Raptor Security System. Raptor® provides a line of sight for those always in our school. The system provides school and district-wide reporting for all visitors, volunteers, and contractors signed in/out of our buildings. This is important for safety reasons.

AHHH-CHOOO!!!! DON’T Spread The Flu! As we transition into the colder months, we must remember the flu season. The flu can have a significant impact on our students, staff, and families, so we want to provide you with some vital information to help keep our school community healthy during this time.

Understanding the Flu The flu, or influenza, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause a wide range of symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. In severe cases, the flu can lead to hospitalization and even be life-threatening.

Flu Prevention Tips Preventing the flu is crucial, and there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of infection... •

Get Vaccinated: Annual flu vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and those around you. We encourage all eligible members of our school community to get vaccinated.

Practice Good Hygiene: Teach your children to cover their mouths and noses with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing. Encourage frequent handwashing with soap and water for at least twenty (20) seconds.

Stay Home When Sick: If you or your child is experiencing flu-like symptoms, please stay home to prevent the spread of the virus. Please consult a healthcare professional for guidance on when it’s safe to return to school.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: A balanced diet, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep can boost your immune system and help protect against the flu.

Hickory Bend Elementary School | November Newsletter

Please know that safety is our number one priority. When an ill child enters our environment, it puts us all at risk. As much as we hate to inconvenience our families, we have no choice but to send your child home when they display flu-like symptoms, including fever, excessive coughing, and regurgitation. Furthermore, we ask that your child is symptom-free for at least twenty-four (24) hours (without medication) before returning to school. If we all work together, we can minimize the spread of the cold and flu. I appreciate your cooperation!
