Conferences

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTC) are an excellent opportunity to find out how your child is adjusting to the new school year and to get to know his/her teachers. Here

are some general hints on how to have a successful

conference:

Ask your child if there is anything that he/she would like to discuss with the teacher Jot down everything that you want to talk about at the conference Arrive remotely on time Begin with positive comments about the teacher or classroom Be open to suggestions from the teacher Keep your emotions under control Take notes about what has been discussed and share them with your child

-- HELPFUL QUESTIONS -In order to help your child’s, have a successful school year, you need to know what will be expected of them academically. You can find out by asking some questions. And don’t forget to take notes. What skills and knowledge will my child be expected to master this year? How will my child be evaluated? What can I do to stay more involved in my child’s academic progress? How do you accommodate differences in learning?

Grading During Remote Learning Grades during the remote learning period are just as important as they are during the regular school year. Students are receiving their first-quarter grades this month, and we all want to see the grades to determine progress and accomplishments. However, it can be challenging to determine a grade based only on assignments, quizzes, and tests during remote learning. During remote learning, we have to empathize with the fact that many factors are beyond our control. A few assignments may be missing, not because a student chose not to do it but possible due to circumstances that can hinder the opportunity to finish. Even a weekly test may not be an accurate measure because it is not in a classroom with a teacher monitoring the test period. So, where do we go for grades if we can’t rely on assignments, quizzes, and tests? We have to look closer at the process our students are going through while learning. During the remote learning class, is the student communicating, questioning, and demonstrating what they have learned? Are they using strategies taught to help solve a problem? These factors should be way heavier on a grading period during remote learning and continue throughout a student’s learning process.
