REMOTE LEARNING PARENT TIPS

• Sitting and helping your child during remote learning can vary from student to student and from grade level to grade level. As a parent, you may find yourself sitting in another room with little to no need to assist during the virtual classroom to have to be alongside your child during the whole remote session. These differences can range from simply helping your child find a link on an assignment to trying to understand the complexity of a lesson yourself. Teachers do understand this can be different and sometimes difficult for the parent. Please note, if you want suggestions for helping, remember to send a message to the teacher through Class Dojo or write a quick note on the chat board. • Keep in mind that it’s more about the child, not always about the work. As parents, we want our children to do well in school. But, it doesn’t necessarily mean completing every assignment with no mistakes. A student doing well is a student that is curious about learning. They may not understand the task write away, but they want to keep trying and find out what they may have gotten incorrect and fix it later. Keep your child happy for learning, not pressured to get everything done correctly. With remote learning, completing every assignment and mastering every lesson will be difficult. The most important point we want during this time is for our students to continue to enjoy school and look forward to learning. f

What’s Happening...

g Longwood PAWS Incentive Program

PAWS is Longwood’s behavior incentive program. Parents are familiar with the enthusiasm students have throughout the school year with earning a PAW from one of their teachers. Well, even with remote learning, we have found a way to keep that PAWS enthusiasm going. Students can earn PAWS in their virtual classroom if they log in on-time, follow virtual rules, participate in class discussions, complete assignments, and be excellent virtual classmates. Students can ‘bank’ the earned PAWS and use them in an October shopping day. Students can shop for a wide range of prizes based on the number of PAWS they have accumulated. Teachers will update their students at the end of each week of how many PAWS they’ve earned. We’ll announce the shopping day soon. On the shopping day, students can come to the school and pick up their prizes!

What’s Happening...

g NWEA MAP Growth Fall Assessments

Students in Brookwood School District 167 Grades 3 – 8 will take the NWEA MAP Growth Assessment in October. Longwood 4th Graders will test on October 7th – 8th. Our 3rd Graders will test the following week, October 13th – 14th. The primary purpose of MAP Growth is to figure out what students know and what they’re ready to learn. This helps teachers adjust their instruction for each student. Don’t help your child answer questions! We recommend that you encourage your child to do their absolute best, but that you don’t provide any hints or assist them in answering questions. Helping your child answer questions misrepresents the test data and makes it harder for teachers to provide personalized instruction. Remind your child that on MAP tests they will get some answers right and some answers wrong because the test provides harder and easier questions based on their answers.
