BROOKWOOD SCHOOL DISTRICT 167 NEWS AUGUST 2021
BACK TO SCHOOL BASH @ HB Dear Families: I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the summer with your family. It is hard to believe that we are just a few weeks away from the start of the 2021-22 school year. Full in-person learning will resume on Friday, August 27th. Please know we are doing everything in our power to return students to school safely while getting back as close to normal as possible. On August 4, Governor Pritzker mandated masks in all school buildings for students, staff, and visitors. Our current Reopening Plan includes universal masking for students and staff until the mandate/guidance is modified. Additionally, on August 5, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released new guidance for schools regarding COVID-19. It emphasizes implementing layered prevention strategies (e.g., using multiple prevention strategies together consistently) to protect people who are not fully vaccinated, including students, staff, and other members of their households. CDC Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/ k-12-guidance.html Please keep an eye out for additional communication from your school principals over the next few weeks. They will provide school-specific details regarding school programs and family activities, school events/clubs, and after school activities. I hope you enjoy the next few weeks of summer weather with friends and family. I look forward to seeing you at our Back to School Bash at Hickory Bend on August 20th from 1 – 4 PM. There will be fun games and activities for our students along with refreshments. We are excited to welcome our students back to school on Friday, August 27th! Sincerely,

The Summer School 2021 Program provided students with an opportunity to attend an extended-day option which included Summer Camp. This additional option allowed students to attend a full day program for five weeks. Students worked on specific grade level reading and math skills in the morning and then in the afternoon were able to participate in hands-on interactive activities in the following areas: Fine Arts, Sports/Fitness, STEAM, and Math Games. Activities included canvas painting, learning how to play the violin and piano, meeting and loving a therapy dog, playing on inflatable obstacle courses, learning new math board games, learning how a microphone works, building a small race-car from scratch, playing basketball, participating in partnership activities with our police and fire departments, and much, much more!
Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA) Effective July 1, 2021, school districts will be required by the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA) to provide additional guarantees that student data is protected when collected by educational technology companies, and that data is used for beneficial purposes only (105 ILCS 85)
In partnership with the Glenwood Police Department, Summer School students went fishing at the Izaak Walton Preserve located in Homewood on Friday, June 18th and Friday, July 9th. The Glenwood Police also had a cookout and students were treated to hot dogs, chips and a drink at the preserve. The district purchased T-Shirts and fishing gear to commemorate this fun activity. The Cops and Bobbers Program is designed to teach kids how to fish while building positive relationships with our Police Officers. The goal of Cops & Bobbers is to get kids hooked on fishing rather than other negative influences, develop positive relationships, and to show our police department in a supportive and friendly manner. Our students had a great time interacting with the Glenwood Police Officers and learning how to fish!
Educational Equity: Brookwood School District 167 understands that we have an urgent and collective responsibility to achieve educational equity by ensuring that all policies, programs, and practices affirm the strengths that each and every child brings within their diverse backgrounds and life experiences, and by delivering the comprehensive supports, programs, and educational opportunities our students need to succeed. Brookwood School District 167 will focus our efforts through four lenses: equity, quality, collaboration, and community.
