Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour visits Broome
T
he 2016 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy and the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour visited Broome Cup Day for the first time on Saturday, 13th August. In an additional first, Jim Cassidy escorted the Cup Trophy down the straight in front of a capacity race-day crowd. The visit was the sixteenth destination on this year’s Cup tour. The two day visit included strong community engagement across all sectors of the community including the Broome Hospital Services; Germanus Aged Care Services and the Broome Visitor Centre. The visitors from the Eastern States also took in a fly-over of Willie Creek and a photo shoot with camels at sunset. Commenting on the visit to Broome, General Manager of the Broome Visitor Centre, Nick Linton was delighted with how the Cup was
received over the two days. “The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour is an initiative that commenced back in 2003 and continues to gain popularity each year. Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour Manager, Joe McGrath indicated that taking the Cup to the People is the key objective for all concerned. “The Victoria Racing Club is conscious that the Melbourne Cup is an absolute icon in this country and affording towns across Australasia the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Cup is what it is all about. “Coupled with the fact that the public get to meet those connected with the Melbourne Cup, it is a unique experience with many of the personalities involved with the Cup providing a valued insight into what it takes to climb the mountain and win
the Holy Grail in Australian racing. “Jim Cassidy in Broome was no exception,” McGrath added. The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour was very much a part of Broome Cup Day promotions with racing engagements also made with the Carbine Club Luncheon at the Zee-Bar and the Broome Cup Calcutta at the Mangrove Hotel on Friday, 12th August. As a particular highlight two-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Jim Cassidy was flown in via helicopter on Cup Day; stretch limoed throughout the course prior to entry into the Allure Marquee. The Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour continued its journey post Broome taking in a further 18 destinations as it continued its lead in to the 156th consecutive running of the Melbourne Cup, proudly sponsored by Emirates.

G
etting off to a flying start — the Broome Visitor Centre (BVC) celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2016. The story begins on a wet, stormy night in January 1974 when Broome’s first Tourist Bureau literally “fell from the sky”. After a 30-minute departure from Broome, the captain of a Garuda DC3 en route to Koepang, Indonesia, had to turn back due to starboard engine failure. He managed to land parallel to the Broome International Airport and all 16 passengers escaped without serious injury. The DC3 was acquired by the Broome Shire, restored and repainted. It was then erected at the edge of town as the Broome Tourist Bureau. Forty years ago, on the August 7, 1976 Allan Ridge, Minister for Tourism, officially opened the DC3 as Broome’s First Tourist Bureau. Between the opening in August 1976 and March 1978 the bureau welcomed over 25,000 tourists. By 1982 the number of visitors
to Broome had grown substantially so a new $170,000 purpose built Visitor Centre was constructed across the road from the DC3. The aircraft was again restored and re-opened as an aviation museum, organised by the tourist bureau manager, Mr. M Strachan, displaying photographs of aviation history in WA, which included the Japanese air raid on Broome in 1942 during WWII. In November 1986 the aviation display was closed and by June 1987 the plane was restored to its original form by the Aviation Historical Society and moved to Adelaide to be displayed at the Adelaide Airport. With visitor numbers so great that there were queues down the street, the decision was made to build a larger centre. In December 2006 the BVC moved into its current, multi-million dollar welcome centre. In recognition of the BVC’s heritage, the building was designed to represent an aircraft with sweeping wings either side and propeller-like

fans. The old BVC building has been taken over and renovated by local publishers Magabala Books. Today the BVC is a non-forprofit organisation, which, with the support of the Shire of Broome and its 350 or so members, welcomes 150,000 people to Broome each year. Visitor Centre staff know and love the Broome region and will provide you with expert advice on local attractions, accommodation, tours, special events, tide times, local businesses and facilities. They also provide the latest information on National Parks as well as road and weather condition reports for Broome and the Kimberley and Pilbara regions. Friendly and professional staff can tailor-make your holiday based on your budget, interests, and length of stay in Broome and the Kimberley region. The Visitor Centre provides a free booking service for tours, accommodation and vehicle hire for Broome and the Kimberley region. It is open seven days a week and has gift shop with maps and local guides as well
as a variety of local product including postcards, books, indigenous art, souvenirs, gifts and holiday mementos. Peak days can see over 1,000 visitors to the centre, while its website www.visitbroome.com.au saw 170,000 unique visitors in 2015. If you are looking for the ideal accommodation,
the perfect experience, a souvenir and, above all, a warm Kimberley welcome; visit the Broome Visitor Centre After 10 years in its current home the BVC board and management are looking to revitalise the space — introducing interactive technology and displays to reflect the unique culture,
history and natural environment of Broome and the Kimberley. As it enters its 5th decade, this is just another step in the organisation’s evolution and will hopefully result in the BVC continuing to serve the Broome community and visitors to the town for another 40 years. Watch this space!

SOBRANE FOR THE LOVE OF BIRDS
I
nternational Australian wildlife artist Sobrane uses a mix of mediums to create her large scale works on linen, techniques fostered whilst attending Red Gate Arts Residency in Beijing two years ago. Sobrane magically transforms pigments of spray paint, inks, enamel, pastels and charcoal into her renown, beautifully created life-like pieces. Sobrane loves to articulate her expression onto linen in an uninhibited joyous manner. Sobrane’s love of birds began 5 years ago with a solo exhibition at the world renown, Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park in Australia. From countless hours of birdwatching, observing the details that they make and how they react, she appreciates each animal for its individualism in its expressions and movements.
16 Broome Well Being Issue September-November 2016
Identifying with their energy and freedom, similar principles she lives by, she felt an instant connection to them. This love has taken her on a beautiful journey with exhibitions in Singapore, Malaysia and Rome. She now runs two very successful galleries in Australia of her works, one in Western Australia and one in Sydney. Her works have been exhibited at the famed Art Gallery of Western Australia. Stepping away from the limitations of white canvas Sobrane has recently pushed her creativity further using walls in the form of urban artwork. Where pastels and charcoal create lines and marks on canvas, Sobrane is using spray paint to create those lines on large scale installations. Her latest installation which feature birds ten metres tall, was in Soriano, Italy.

llure South Sea Pearls founders William (Bill) Reed AM and Lindsay Youd have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of perfect pearls. Born of a love of the pearling industry, their quest has taken them to some of the world’s most remote and beautiful shores, and their fascination for the process of growing a pearl, from the first seeding to the ‘birth’ two years later, has never diminished. Historically pearls have always been exceptionally rare, available only to royalty and the very wealthy. With the advent of pearl farming methods in the early 1900s, this began to change, and pearls became a more attainable luxury, a symbol of success, elegance and refinement. Each piece of Allure jewellery brings to life the beauty of nature’s most magnificent gem by carefully considering the complexion, colour, shape and lustre of each pearl before it is transformed into a piece of wearable art. The size, quality and beauty of Australian pearls have made them one
of the most sought-after varieties in the world and Allure pride themselves on creating jewellery with only the most exquisite pearls. Allure exclusively sources naturally coloured pearls and selects only the finest gems from each harvest. With an impressive array of white, black and intense gold pearls from

Residing predominantly in Broome, the historical home of the pearling industry, Allure are celebrated for their fine collection of classic South Sea pearl pieces coupled with hand-crafted couture designs, each meticulously created with unrivalled skill by Allure South Sea Pearls’ artisan jewellers. Having established a significant following in the Australian and International marketplace, Allure South Sea Pearls have just released their latest collection, which co-founder Lindsay Youd says is a reflection of the styles that have become synonymous with the Allure brand. “The collection has a real emphasis on time honoured style with an exciting mix of more contemporary pieces that put a beautiful spin on the way we wear pearls every day.” Allure is located at 25 Dampier Terrace in historic Chinatown and at the Cable Beach Club Resort and Spa at Cable Beach.

Staircase to the Moon This natural phenomenon is caused by a full moon rising over the exposed mudflats of Roebuck Bay at extremely low tides, creating a beautiful optical illusion of a staircase reaching to the moon. This unique indoor/outdoor theatre has withstood the ravages of war, cyclones and king tides. Housed in the foyer is an excellent display of movie memorabilia. Taking in a movie under the stars at Sun Pictures is a must do when visiting! Located in Chinatown. Current movies are shown every night. Phone (08) 9192 3738 for features and show times.
10 things you must do in Broome Broome Museum Definitely one of the best regional museums in Australia — a must see when visiting! The Broome Museum features a display on pearling and a large collection of photographs and files that piece together the fascinating history of Broome. Located in the old Customs House behind the Seaview Shopping Centre. The museum building was erected in the late 1890s and in 1901 it became the general store for Newman Goldstein & Co. The store was stocked with all the requirements for Newman Goldstein & Co.’s fleet of 22 luggers, two schooners and a steam launch. The store was also an important mercantile business victualling and purchasing pearlshell and pearls from other fleets. The company at this time also owned the Roebuck Bay Hotel. In 1904 the Customs House and Bond Store was destroyed by white ants. Despite a public outcry, the government service was transferred to a building that was situated in today’s museum yard. Customs then moved into the current museum building in 1910 and remained until 1979. The Broome Historical Society’s need for larger premises resulted in the Broome Shire Council purchasing this building. It was opened as the Museum in 1981 by the then Premier of WA, Sir Charles Court. Phone (08) 9192 2075 for hours and complete details.
Chinatown A delightful reminder of the early multicultural mix of people in Broome. Take a wander through the original commercial centre of Broome, which was once the bustling hub of pearl sheds, billiard saloons, entertainment houses and Chinese eateries. Chinatown is now home to some of the world’s finest pearl showrooms, along with a variety of retail outlets. Sidewalk cafes add a splash of colour to the pavements. 20 Broome Well Being Issue September-November 2016
Dinosaur Footprints Dinosaur footprints over 120 million years old can be seen at Gantheaume Point at very low tide. As the reef area is very fragile, care must be taken when exploring this area. For the benefit of visitors, a plaster cast of the tracks has been embedded at the top of the cliff. Footprints around Broome have identified the following species: Stegosaur, Sauropod, Wintonopus, Theropod and Megolosauropus Broomensis. Footprints can be viewed at Gantheaume Point at tides below 2.16m. As the rocks can be slippery and steep, a high level of mobility and sturdy shoes are required. It is not recommended to attempt to find the footprints once it is dark.
Cable Beach Claimed to be one of the most stunning beaches in the world with 22 kilometres of pristine white sand, pindan cliffs and clear turquoise water. With gentle rolling waves perfect for swimming, sunbathing, beachcombing and many other water sports. For a unique experience join the camel rides that operate daily along the beach. Take a picnic down and enjoy a relaxing evening taking in the stunning Kimberley colours of the world famous Cable Beach Sunset.
Flying Boat Wrecks Located 1km offshore from Town Beach the Dutch Flying Boat wrecks are visible, remaining as evidence of the Japanese air raid on Broome during WWII. On March 3, 1942, at 9.30am a force of 10 Japanese aircraft destroyed a flotilla of 16 large flying boats on the water and seven aircraft on the airstrip. The tragedy was that many of the flying boats were carrying women and children. The death toll is still uncertain, but probably exceeded 100, for many of the bodies were never recovered. The mud of Roebuck Bay has done a very good job of preserving the aircraft. At extremely low tides, the plane wrecks are visible to those who wish to walk the kilometre across the Roebuck Bay mud flats from Town Beach. The Catalina Boat Wrecks are only visible at tides less than 0.86m, it is recommended you allow an hour to walk out to the wrecks, and an hour to return to shore. Enclosed shoes are also recommended.
Japanese Cemetery Balancing the memory of those who died in the air raids, Broome’s Japanese cemetery is a poignant reminder of the Japanese contribution to Broome and pearling. The cemetery is the final resting place for over 900 Japanese pearl divers. Large sandstone rocks have been used in the headstones and inscribed in Japanese. Situated on Port Drive.
SSJG Heritage Centre This permanent exhibition was opened in 2007 to celebrate the Centenary of the work of the Sisters of St John of God in the Kimberley. It was inspired in part by requests from locals for a place where people could access photographs. Originally meant as a temporary exhibition it is now permanent and opens six days a week, nine months of the year. This access is only possible through the generosity of volunteers; most local but also some who come to Broome for extended visits during the dry season. The exhibition tells the story of 100 years of the Sisters in the Kimberley, the various ministries they were involved in and their relationships with local people. Use is made of multimedia in the form of screens with short films, computer touch screens, enlarged photographs, storyboards and a limited number of heritage items. Open mid-February to mid-November, Monday to Friday 9am-1pm. Saturday 10am-1pm. Entry by donation, 9 Barker St, Broome Phone (08) 9192 2075.
JETTY TO JETTY Visitors to Broome may notice a number of distinctive red signs dotted around the old facades of the Chinatown centre and against the vibrant backdrop of Roebuck Bay. These are the markers of the Jetty to Jetty Trail — a recently launched self-guided audio walking tour based on Broome’s pearling past. The Jetty to Jetty Trail takes in thirteen historical and cultural sites that explore Broome’s pearling era and the rich cultural landscape of the Yawuru people. See article on page 48. O
ne of the Kimberley’s most enduring family businesses turns 70 this year. From its humble beginnings in 1946, the Brown family became Australia’s first cultured pearlers when Lyndon Brown’s experiments in 1959 miraculously succeeded and he developed the expertise to culture pearls. This made him the first person in the world to do so, since Mikimoto, who kept the technique highly secretive. This consequently broke the Japanese strangle hold on cultured pearling and gave birth to a truly Australian cultured pearling product and industry.
Lyndon Brown and Tom Wiggan pioneering a new Australian Industry.
Once Lyndon Brown had mastered the art of pearl cultivation, he started training his colleagues. The first were local Indigenous men Aubrey Tigan, Tom Wiggan and Gordon Dixon. This created the unique situation in a global perspective where, apart from the Japanese technicians, just one white man and three Aboriginal men held the highly secret intellectual property (IP) of pearl cultivation. These three Aboriginal men, and others Lyndon trained, would go on to play pivotal roles in the growth of the Broome pearling industry. Broome, the Dampier Peninsula and the Kimberley archipelago have been at the heart of Western Australia’s pearling past and boasted 16 pearling operators at its peak. Following the GFC and the downturn in the luxury goods market there have been only 3 active pearl producers in this region since 2009. Cygnet Bay is one of the few places left in Western Australia where pearling continues. It was in 2009 that Cygnet Bay Pearls opened up its farm to the public and became the first and only operational / commercial pearl farm in Australia where tourists could experience the industry first hand and purchase direct from the source. James Brown, third generation pearler of Cygnet Bay Pearls, who is leading this development refers to it as the authentic pearling “cellar door” experience. The farm now boasts the only in ground pool
on the Dampier Peninsular, an elevated restaurant offering bay views, along with a variety of accommodation options, from safari tents to heritage listed self-contained divers cottages. It’s a model that James believes other pearlers might follow to create a pearling region from Broome and into the Kimberley where adventurers can discover the amazing environment which produces the world’s best pearls, whilst hosted by people who live and work in this remote pristine environment. Celebrating 70 years of pearling demonstrates the ingenuity, passion and vision of the Brown family over three generations. Cygnet Bay Pearls continues to invest in pearling and environment sustainability with the establishment of the Kimberley Marine Research Station in 2009, one of only three independently funded marine research stations in the world. A hatchery program developing oyster family lines that are more resistant to climate change and to prepare the industry for the future. In August the official launch of the new stunning flagship boutique in Dampier Terrace was held along with the unveiling of the 12 metre timeline wall introducing the Broome visitor to the two pearling industries Broome has had all thanks to the natural abundance of the world’s largest oyster Pinctada Maxima.
The Kimberley Lily collection by Cygnet Bay Pearls.
In another industry first, Cygnet Bay Pearls launched “The Australian Pearl Jewellery Design Competition”, highlighting the beauty, rarity and pedigree of the Australian South Sea pearl and innovative designs created by the Australian jewellery industry. The jewellery entries can be viewed online on the Cygnet Bay Pearls website. The way things look right now, 70 years is just the beginning. To complete a stay in Broome a visit to Cygnet Bay Pearl farm or its Broome Boutique and Exhibition Space is a must.

ROEBUCK BAY SNUBBIES B
roome’s best kept secret dwells right on our doorstep. Home to over 140 snubfin dolphins, Roebuck Bay provides an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s largest known population of these rare dolphins. Once thought to be an Irrawaddy, these unusual looking mammals were recently named as a new species and are one of only two species of dolphin endemic to Australia’s northern coastline. Unlike other dolphins, these snubfin dolphins form very tight-knit social groups. Playful, social and shy are among the many words to describe these endearing creatures. Snubfin dolphins
are extremely social dolphins and when playing or feeding, become so focused on their own activities they are oblivious to their surroundings. These rare dolphins feed in the shallow waters where tidal creeks supply rich food sources. When feeding in Roebuck Bay they exhibit a distinctive, feeding behaviour spitting jets of water ahead of their catch to disorientate their prey. These dolphins and this fishing technique are so unique that the BBC recently sent a film crew to Broome to capture this unusual behaviour. Not only are these rare dolphins creating much excitement, Roebuck Bay
24 Broome Well Being Issue September-November 2016
is equally igniting. Declared a Ramsar site in 1990 and listed on the National Heritage register in 2011, Roebuck Bay has become of international importance and in 2015 was declared Australia’s newest marine park. Roebuck Bay boasts the most diverse mudflats in the world. Its tidal range is so large it exposes a staggering 160 km2 of mudflats. With its incredibly diverse ecosystem, our bay is a sanctuary for numerous species of marine life. From turtles and dugongs to over 400 species of Benthic Invertebrates, the seagrass meadows found in the bay provides extensive feeding grounds for this highly diverse ecosystem. With over 150,000 migratory shore birds expected over the season, Roebuck Bay is a nature lover’s paradise. For Yawuru People Roebuck Bay is integral to their history, culture and way of life. Yawuru people have an acute awareness of the bays incredible richness that has provided sustenance to their people for thousands of years. In September 2015, Broome Whale Watching started Australia’s very first tour interacting with our local Snubfin dolphins and showcasing the incredibly diverse ecosystem that is Roebuck Bay.
HOVERING between the sun and the moon T
he sun gives us our spirit, and the Moon, our soul. As they align with planet Earth, Broome’s dramatic tidal phenomenon provides the most tranquil and romantic backdrop to unwind, relax and explore. It is in the Spring tide week that this planetary interaction is most visible, exposing the tidal flats and all the inhabitants within them twice a day. There are many
beaches providing access to the tidal flats of the bay, but really there is only one way to venture right out onto the tidal flats, and that is by hovercraft. Broome Hovercraft will transport you across the tidal floor to see dinosaur footprints in old petrified forrest on the other side of Roebuck Bay. Gliding along the tidal edge take in the view as pelicans, egrets, osprey and sea eagles pass by,
whilst marvelling at the dramatic red rich Pindan cliff backdrop as you land on a secluded patch of pristine coastline. As the tide continues to fall you then head off into the bay, settle down on the sandy sea floor and let your pilots look after you with sparkling wine and hors d’oeuvres as the sun finally sets silhouetting the Broome Peninsula whilst glistening off ripples in the tidal floor.

MATSO'S BREWS A TROPICAL DELIGHT B
eing the most remote brewery in Australia is certainly a challenge at times but the Matso’s team love their spiritual home in Broome. Matso’s Broome Brewery as we know it began in 2000 when Martin and Kim Peirson-Jones took over a truly micro 200L brewery that was also a café and art gallery. Kim’s daughter Dannielle and her boyfriend (now husband) Justin Wiebrecht took up operations in Broome and leased out the art gallery so that they could concentrate on the important things in life: beer and food! In 2004 the Broome brewery underwent an upgrade to a full mash brewery so that it could produce 1200L of beer at a time. With Martin’s son PJ (Martin Jnr) also in the business, what was a small family owned café brewery
30 Broome Well Being Issue September-November 2016
was quickly becoming famous for its beer and demand soared to the point that the family decided to start hand bottling the beers, starting with Ginger Beer followed by Smokey Bishop Dark Lager and Monsoonal Blonde. Now the brewery is famous for its Ginger Beer and Mango Beers along with the ice-hot Chilli Beer with a range of seven products now available in bottleshops around Australia! It’s still a family owned business and the three generations of family still live here in Broome and are often seen at Matso’s after a hard day at work. Now as one of Broome’s most famous man-made attractions, the brewery is known for its laid back atmosphere, food and, of course, beer. Live music in the courtyard can be heard on Friday, Saturday and Sunday
afternoons with a variety of artists coming through town along and performances from great local talent. The Matso’s menu features the beers throughout, whether as a food match or infused in the dish, with the chefs working hard on that perfect balance of flavours. The chefs have also created a tasty share plate menu (the fritters are delicious), full of local produce that visitors have been enjoyed immensely. The Matso’s Curry Hut is open seven days a week in the courtyard during the dry season. It offers authentic Indian cuisine sometimes cooked with Matso’s beers (dare to try one with the Chilli Beer!). Tap beers will change slightly from season to season, depending on what the Head Brewer has been up to! You can always get favourites Ginger Beer, Mango Beer, Hit the Toad Lager and Bishop’s Best Dark Lager along with seasonal beers like the recent Copperhead India Pale Ale plus Chilli and Lychee!

B
roome’s Scenic Pioneers: King Leopold Air (KLA) was named after the King Leopold Ranges in the Central Kimberley. The King Leopold Ranges extend West to East from Walcott Inlet (West) to El Questro (East).
Original Logo showing the King Leopold Ranges
King Leopold Air started out as a charter company in 1991. It was originally based in Broome and serviced Mt Elizabeth Station (located in the central Kimberley Basin) moving people and freight over the remote area. This area was in the King Leopold Ranges and so King Leopold Air was born. Later in 1994 the charter company was sold to new owners on Norfork Island, being the famous Christian family. They intended to expand their services within the Kimberley and a new Chief Pilot/Instructor was sent across from Sydney. Troy Balic set about looking for work for the fledging company and realised that the Kimberley had some remarkable areas and the aircraft could be utilised to explore the wonders of the Kimberley. Scenic flights from
Broome then commenced over the Dampier Peninsula. Troy was able to expand the scenic flights routes as well as charter business which resulted in the number of aircraft increasing to three. In March 1999, Troy Balic was offered an airline opportunity and advised the Christian family, on Norfork Island, he would be resigning. Phil and Maude Telfer saw an opportunity to stay in Broome and offered to purchase the company, this was completed within a week. The company had three cross hired Cessna 210 and three pilots. By this stage the KLA scenic tours was growing substantially albeit the town still being small — and the internet was just beginning. The year 2000 started with the Millennium Bug! The Sydney Olympics was predicted to be a tourism bonanza, unfortunately not for Broome. As the 21st Century started the tourism industry expanded from mainly caravan tourists to include visitors that flew from the east coast and overseas. These tourists were interested in seeing what the Kimberley could provide in a short space of time. As the majority of visitors were only planning to visit once (as distance is a factor) scenic flights were the most effective way to see the remote attractions and a vast amount could be covered in a day. As tourist numbers grew so did King Leopold Air. Pilots keen to start their flying careers had greater
WHAT'S in a name?
opportunities to take visitors on an exciting day out. Phil and Maude continued to expand their scenic tours and charters which then increased the demand for numbers of aircraft. Presently the fleet of 12 aircraft including Cessna 210, 207 and 206 is the largest number of single engine aircraft in the Kimberley. The tours that Troy Balic had set up in the '90s have continued to this date. The Pilots for King Leopold Air usually stay for two seasons and gain a wealth of experience that they can take with their flying career. This is a win win arrangement. Travellers get to see the remote attractions and the pilots acquire the flying hours and experience they need. Finally, today King Leopold Air has 14 pilots to whet the tourist appetite for adventure. The name has remained the same as it fits in with the Kimberley area. Although “King Leopold Air” is not the best marketing name (especially when placing it in a Google Search) the moto of FLY THE KIMBERLEY® is still the company service orientated objective.

Horizontal not vertical!
T
he appeal of the Kimberley landscape is best understood in terms of the sublime. The sights, the sounds, the colours, they overwhelm. And with this, the awe of its vastness, mixed with a hint of terror and danger, make it capable of generating the strongest sensations in all its visitors. To understand it, you have to experience it. And one of the most isolated and romantic natural icons can be found hidden deep within Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago. The Horizontal Falls consist of a pair of gorges through which massive
tidal movements create a waterfall effect. However, water rushes across the bay’s surface, creating a waterfall effect that runs horizontally instead of vertically. The speed through which the tides flow through the gaps can be so ferocious and captivating. At times such as this, it’s difficult to feel anything but inspired by nature and filled with wonder at the whole experience. From rugged cliffs to turquoise waters, the allure of the Horizontal Falls and the Kimberley region is clear. As the backdrop to so many special occasions, such as wedding
anniversaries, engagement proposals and milestone celebrations, the region brings out the romantic in all of us. What better place to show you the one you love how much they mean to you than at the Horizontal Falls? The opportunity to experience a heart pumping fast boat ride through the Horizontal Falls, a stunning scenic helicopter ride and a seaplane flight, make for an experience that will remain for a lifetime, and can only be found in Australia’s North West. Spoil yourself, or spoil a loved one, and experience the magic of the Kimberley today. Broome Visitors Guide September-November 2016 43

Dampier's direct contribution to Australia's history was slight; indeed, his own impression of the west coast was unfavourable ...
Dampier and his sighting of Cygnet and Roebuck Bay.
W
illiam Dampier (16511715), seaman and author, was baptised on 5 September 1651, the son of a tenant farmer of East Coker, Somerset, England. After participating in various trading and privateering ventures on both sides of Central America he joined, in 1683, a group of buccaneers bound for the Pacific by way of Cape Horn. Three years later he set out upon his first crossing of the Pacific as one of the crew of the Cygnet. Before his return to England in 1691 Dampier had visited the Philippines and the islands of the eastern archipelago, had spent three months of 1688 on the Australian coast in the vicinity of
King Sound and had taken part in a series of trading voyages in south-east Asia. His account of these experiences, when published in 1697 and 1699, immediately established him as an authority on the South Seas; in direct consequence of this reputation the Admiralty consulted him on the best method of exploring these waters. Given command of the expedition prepared for that purpose, Dampier, with the rank of captain, sailed from England in January 1699 in H.M.S. Roebuck and on 6 August anchored at the entrance to the inlet he named Shark Bay. A week later he started on a coasting cruise to the north-east in search of water. Failing to find it he
left the coast near Roebuck Bay on 5 September bound for Timor. From January to April 1700 the Roebuck was on the north coast of New Guinea and it was in this period that New Britain, the only major discovery of the voyage, was sighted and named. Dampier appeared to have little ability in managing the crews placed under him, and in 1702 a court martial declared him unfit to command any of His Majesty’s ships. Nevertheless, he made another voyage round the world between 1708 and 1711, not as a commander but as pilot to the efficient and successful Captain Woodes Rogers. Whatever his virtues as a sailor, Dampier was immensely

popular as an author, his works setting an entire fashion in travel literature and influencing such men as Swift and Defoe. New Voyage Round the World ran to four editions within two years of its publication in London in 1697, and there were seven editions of his works by 1727. The second volume was published in 1699 and the third and fourth, dealing with the Roebuck, in 1703 and 1709. His account of the winds and currents of the Pacific in the 1699 volume has earned the respect of navigators and meteorologists to the present day. Dampier’s direct contribution to Australian history was slight; indeed, his own impression of the west coast was unfavourable, since it seemed to him to be a long series of reefs and shoals behind which lay sandhills and barren country, apparently without water and inhabited by ‘the miserablest People in the World’. There is nothing in this description of the topography to endanger his reputation for accurate observation. Nevertheless the great interest in the southern continent roused by his books was sustained throughout the century and the final exploration of the Pacific was carried out by his fellow-countrymen. The discovery and settlement of eastern Australia may be viewed as the indirect but none the less real conclusion of Dampier's work. He died in London in 1715.

irst stop, set beside a stunning tidal creek, is Willie Creek Pearl Farm. Here you can discover how the beautiful Australian South Sea Pearl is cultured. There is also a restaurant/café – be sure to check the opening times. The trip out to Willie Creek is possible in an AWD car or alternatively join one of the excellent tours from Broome. To go any further up the Manari Road you’ll need a large 4WD, or join a guided tour, but it is well worth the trip. Broome’s stunning northern beaches can
be reached within an hour. Highlights include fishing at Barred Creek, picnicking at Quondong Point and the scenic drive on top of the red cliffs of James Price Point. If you are looking out to sea from one of the beaches or cliff tops between June and September don’t be surprised if you see Humpback Whales breaching. North of James Price Point the road deteriorates and is subject to extreme tides, so be prepared. For the most up to date information on the Manari Road and

Jetty to Jetty Trail: a self-guided walk through Broome’s pearling past
V
isitors to Broome may notice a number of distinctive red signs dotted around the old facades of the Chinatown centre and against the vibrant backdrop of Roebuck Bay. These are the markers of the Jetty to Jetty Trail — a recently launched selfguided audio walking tour based on Broome’s pearling past. The Jetty to Jetty Trail takes in thirteen historical and cultural sites that explore Broome’s pearling era and the rich cultural landscape of the Yawuru people. Beyond the physical signage and seating at the sites, the trail includes a smart phone app providing stories and music relating to each location.
For those wanting to embark on this unique Broome experience, a free app is available to download onto any smart phone. The app can be found by searching ‘Jetty to Jetty’ on the Apple App Store or Google Play. Walking Jetty to Jetty: Stories of Broome is also available for purchase from tourist outlets. The book is a wonderful keepsake and contains detailed information and images for each of the trail’s thirteen sites. Although the Jetty to Jetty Trail is designed as a self-guided walk, Nyamba Buru Yawuru will be running guided tours on request. Tours will be led by Yawuru man Bart Pigram, a Broome local and an experienced tour guide.

AWARD WINNER, YANE Sotiroski
B
ased in Broome, Yane is an award winning photographer specialising in aerial and landscape photography. Yane says he gains inspiration from the land. “I’m always trying to better my previous photos. The thought of getting back out to a remote beach or thumping waterfall is all it takes.” “I don’t really have a favourite place as such but I am always drawn down to the Dampier Peninsula. I’ve grown up in Broome and the colour of our waters and the contrast in our pindan has my heart.” Starting his career in a mini lab after finishing high school, Yane says “I think from there the seed was planted ... back in those days it was all 35mm film and I was fascinated by the process of developing and then producing paper prints. I didn’t have any interest in photography at school, having said that I don’t think it was offered back in those days. My first experience with a camera and actually taking pictures was when I picked up my dad’s latest 35mm film camera, it was one of those models that had autofocus ... taking pictures just felt natural to me, especially shooting landscapes.” Yane now photographs the
Kimberley region year-round but mainly during the wet season and reaches remote destinations using a combination of 4WD, helicopter, charter boats and foot. He fondly recalls a wet season trip with friends Joe Calandra from Broome Helicopter Services and fellow photographer Hugh Brown. “We chartered Joe’s helicopter in 2011, which happened to be the biggest wet that I can remember. We went right up to the Mitchell Falls; I’ve never heard anything like it before; just the sheer white noise and rumble of the water will always be with me.” Whether a professional photographer or a novice, Yane believes that beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but “if you like a photo and it brings back memories then that is a memorable photo.” Yane is an AIPP accredited photographer and recently won the 2016 WA AIPP Commercial Photographer of the Year.

T
he busy time is starting to come to an end, it's certainly downhill from here for 2016. Our last few months of fishing have been absolutely awesome. Reef species have been on the bite in great numbers. Pelagic fish like the sailfish and Spanish mackerel have been crashing baitfish in most of the known haunts and of course the whales are a great addition to any offshore fishing expedition. We were even lucky enough to be graced with the presence of celebrity chefs Pete and Manu from My Kitchen Rules. These two are great advocates of healthy living, getting outdoors, catching a feed and then cooking it up. We did a quick trip out to the 16mile and caught some good crimson and moses perch before AOC owner and manager Kelly cooked them dinner. She was scored 10s by the lads so we were all pleased with her efforts. It’s always great to have the celeb’s visit, they did a fantastic job promoting Broome and we had some great coverage on Facebook and Instagram. In the next few months we will see the typical dry season easterlies subside and be replaced with mostly calm mornings and afternoon sea breezes. Towards the end of September the water will warm and in October the build-up clouds will start in the sky to the east.
Locally around Broome the blue line emperor can be found schooling in September and on some reefs it’s hard to get past these hungry fish ... That’s not a bad thing as these fish are delicious on the plate. In October and November we often fish a little bit deeper to get onto the rankin cod, red emperor, crimson and saddletail perch. Fish the flat ground from the 40m mark, any small structure could potentially hold good fish. This time of year can be fantastic to chase sailfish. There are usually good baitfish schools to the north of Broome and good numbers of pelagic fish can be found getting a feed before they follow the bait south. The only downside is the run back home into a headwind, so be sure to check the weather forecast. October and November is also a great time to head into local creeks or up to the Fitzroy River to catch a barramundi or threadfin salmon. The warmer water temperatures will get these fish on the move and looking for a well presented bait or lure. There are a few charter operators that are experts at putting you onto fish in the local creeks and rivers or if you are boat savvy you could hire a boat and take yourself. If you keep your ear to the ground it’s the perfect time to pick up a late notice trip on one of the motherships to the
Kimberley. Some of the boats do dedicated barra fishing trips and if you’re very lucky you might pick up a last minute deal to target this world class sport fish. Late in the year is generally the best time of the year for visiting our offshore atoll systems like the Rowley Shoals or Scott Reef. Lighter winds make conditions out there often perfect with crystal clear water and loads of different fish species to target. There are quite a few different charter options for heading to the Rowley Shoals that range from 5 star motherships to boats for the more budget conscious. Some boats specialise in fishing, others diving and some will do a mix of both. We personally cater for small groups of up to 6 passengers where we can concentrate on the needs of individual groups. One thing is for sure, which ever boat you choose you will be blown away by how remote, untouched and magnificent these coral atoll reef systems are. Lastly, if you are looking to see what fish are on the bite, most charter operators update their Facebook feed daily. You can check out the catch of the day by liking and following their pages and don’t forget to contact the visitor centre for expert advice and to make a booking. Hope to see you out on the water! BOOK REVIEW TWO SISTERS
T
he gripping true story of young Walmajarri sisters, Ngarta and Jukuna and their exodus from the Great Sandy Desert during a period of extraordinary change. Ngarta lived in terror of two men. She had seen them spear her mother and kill her grandmother and then her brother … she kept wondering who would be next. When she had the chance, she took her mother to one side. ‘I said to my mother: “You and me’ll have to go, run away in the night. They might kill us.” But my mother wouldn’t listen.’ The next afternoon, Ngarta ran away. Ngarta and Jukuna lived in the Great Sandy Desert. They traversed country according to the seasons. In 1961, when Jukuna leaves with her new husband, young Ngarta remains with a group of women and children. Tragedy strikes and Ngarta is forced to travel alone. Her survival depends on cunning and courage as she is pursued by two murderers in a vast unforgiving landscape. Jukuna’s rich account may be the first autobiography written in an Aboriginal language.
ABOUT THE AUTHORS Ngarta Jinny Bent spent her early years as a hunter and gatherer. As a young woman, she moved onto stations in the Kimberley. Ngarta’s artwork has been exhibited in Australia and overseas. She died in 2002. Jukuna Mona Chuguna walked out of the desert in 1961. She was one of the first women to attend Walmajarri literacy classes and learn to write English. Jukuna travelled in Australia and overseas to exhibit her paintings. She died in 2011. Pat Lowe migrated from England and she worked as a psychologist. In 1986, Pat lived in a desert camp with artist Jimmy Pike, where she came to know Jukuna. Pat Lowe has published widely. Eirlys Richards first studied Walmajarri with the goal of teaching literacy and Bible translation in the late 1960s. She moved to Fitzroy Crossing and has maintained her link with Walmajarri people ever since. She has has published several texts on the Walmajarri language.
