n partnership with the Eduinburgh Blues and Jazz Festival and Fife Council, Brouhaha International brings its carnival atmosphere to the street’s of Kirkcaldy, Scotland. This event begins with a street parade of large-scale carnival puppets and costumes leading to Town House Square, where local and international groups perform dance, music, circus and much more.

A celebration of Local and International work
J’ouvert Kazimier Club B rouhaha International hosts a J’ouvert music and dance event for the first time in the festival. J’ouvert is a large party prior to the main Carnival event.
The celebration traditionally involves bands and their followers dancing through the streets well before dawn and finishing a few hours after sunrise. Unfortunately in case of our usual summer weather we will be hosting an indoor J’ouvert event. The traditions of J’ouvert involve smearing paint and mud on your the participants bodies and by so doing become a “Jab Jabs”. This event will also feature one of our international percussion collaborations developed specifically for the festival. So join us for this new and exciting festival event.

This year will feature a evening jam packed with local and international talent, bringing you diverse performances and a mini parade 'Carnival Kick Off' which ignites the Carnival atmosphere long associated with Brouhaha International Street Festival. This is a perfect opportunity to bring the whole family to get a real taste of what the festival has to offer, the evening will feature short performances of music, dance, circus and carnival from this year’s festival as well as the world premier of 'Carnival Stories' a film that captures the memories and history of carnival in Liverpool.

Thursday 25thJuly Our day begins with a spectacular carnival parade with performances and costume groups making their way through Stanley Park coming to rest at the Isla Gladstone. We then bring you a day long festival of local and international music, dance, circus and street theatre with live music on the beautiful bandstand as part of the LIMF Bandstand programme This festival is apart of The North Liverpool ‘Show Your Beautiful Face’ campaign, a pioneering initiative is to transform the environments in the Anfield, County and Kirkdale neighbourhoods of Liverpool.

013 sees us present a ‘Global Carnival for a Global City’ with local, regional, national and international participation, truly making this year’s event a significant contribution to Liverpool’s cultural calendar. Liverpool continues to be influenced by the presence and wealth of its diverse communities. Our 2013 costume designs build on our understanding of ‘the World in One City’ realised through new costume designs by our carnival’s artistic Director Ray Mahabir. Costume designs are based on the four continents of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe that when joined together create a ‘Global Festival’ (Fete).

World in Princes Park Festival 16

O
ur parade will lead to Princes Park, in the heart of Toxteth. A multicultural celebration, with local, regional, national and international performances. The park will also host a family Circus Garden area with children’s workshops and performances. In the park there will be international food stalls, something for all tastes. This year there will be three new elements at the festival this year ‘Sound System Culture’ an interactive installation exploring the development of reggae ‘Sound Systems’ in the North of England and Liverpool street handball demonstration for those of you who in the sporting mood. Lastly in collaboration with Milap we will host two Indian musicians Gaurav Mazumdar an expert in Hindustani sitar music, tutored by the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar. Gaurav will be performing with Kousic Sen a versatile and popular percussionist who has performed alongside many leading Indian Classical musicians and dancers as well as with ensembles performing a range world music fusion. The festival will finish with two great bands from Trinidad ‘Sheldon Blackman and the Soul Rebels’ and from Birmingham ‘Abelwel Foundation’. Respecting Your Environment This is a family event and people should be able to enjoy themselves while having the maximum of respect for the environment and those around them, please ensure that all rubbish is placed in the bins provided and be aware that there will be no parking or access to the park for motorized vehicles all day. World in Princes Park is a dry event and no alcohol will be on sale. This event has been made possible through a partnership between Brouhaha International and Plus Dane Housing Group and Merseycare.

‘Jumpers’ is a new devised high impact dance and free running project which will see the contemporary urban dance company ‘Soul City’ from reunion Island in the Indian Ocean collaborate with Liverpool ‘Airborn Academy’. Both groups will present this work within the 2013 Brouhaha International Street Festival. This work will be led by artistic director of ‘Soul City’ Didier Boutiana Global Beats’ is a new large-scale percussion collaboration that will see 50 drummers from Bombrando (Portugal); Gwanaval (Martinique); KaluntRA; Batala (UK) develop a new score that will be presented at the World in Princes Park festival.
The Temple’ is a new collaboration between ‘The Country Boys’ Tassa drum group from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Ankur Dance group based at the Liverpool Hindu Temple. Together these performances will create a new dance music collaboration to be performed within this year’s festival.
Circus Garden a new collaboration between young circus performers from Liverpool, Theatre Pinezka (Poland) and M&M Roma music group (Hungary). Together they will devise a family friendly show presented at this year’s festival. Urban dance collaboration: 60 urban dancers from the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and France will develop a collaborative performance based on our 2013 annual carnival theme ‘GLOBAL Fete’. Music collaboration: spoken word artists from Ireland, Germany will collaborate to record a new CD of work this work will be present on the main stage at the ‘World in Princes Park festival’.

The Country Boys (Trinidad & Tobago) The Country Boys tassa drumming group have performed in Guadeloupe, Grenada, Cuba and the UK, with their pulsating sound. Their group’s goal is to continue to share their unique sound throughout the world soothing the hearts of our listeners with the rhythmic drums and maintaining a high quality of music
Airborn Academy (UK) are an internationally recognised name within the freerunning and parkour community, delivering workshops & performances across the nation. Ryan Doyle, one of the founders, is the Red Bull sponsored athlete and twice world champion of the accredited Art of Motion event. Airborn have created an exceptional and unique display team from our most talented students, who together with the coaches can provide breathtaking freerunning and acrobatic shows, combining high energy with urban flare.
One Love Crew (Germany) One love is a music group of 5 teenagers who sing & rap in German. Their songs deal with different themes whereby life & love always plays a big role. M&M (Hungary) “The M&M is a family group, established by young Hungarian-Romani people in 2010. Their performance will show people the traditional Hungarian gypsy music and dance.
Crossing Borders (Ireland) A raw and engaging collective of young lyricists, hip hop, rap, spoken word and vocal performers from Ballymun, Dublin. Supported by axis, Ballymun and Poppintree Youth Project. www.brouhaha.uk.com

Got Skills (the Netherlands) An Urban Dance Sensation. Dance performance combining many urban dance styles delivered by highly talented dancers from Holland. Flashback to the roots of where it started (reflecting the different parts of the world and different cultures) and how we experience urban dance at it is at this moment in time.
Bring the Fire (UK) A local group of young circus performers have been developing new work to link with a youth circus group from Poland. Our Liverpool based group focus on juggling and levitation sticks. XXL (Spain) XXL perform a new show APOCALYPSIS, choreographed by Adela Monera. This work combines the heat of fire, the strength of earth, the freedom of air and the flow of water, we obtain the power of the four elements. Contrasting energetic urban dance with the sensibility of contemporary dance they present a varied choreography based on expressiveness, the emotions and different states of mind.
Bombrando (Portugal) BOMBRANDO Percussion and Portuguese bagpipes aims to encourage the participation of the young people in cultural activities, promoting traditional culture. BOMBRANDO provides great moments of musical performance drawing on drum traditions from Africans, reggae to rock and classical.

KalentuRA (the Netherlands) KalentuRa is best known for their Caribbean drum band that transforms every event into a rhythmic spectacle. The band draws inspiration from the Caribbean and Brazilian carnival, but is also influenced by Antillean, Surinamese, Latin-American, African and even Dutch music. This unusual mix of music styles gives the band a unique and individualistic style. With inciting music and sparkling shows, KalentuRa delivers tropical heat for every event. The band lives up to its name, which means warmth or heat in Papiamento.For the drummers of KalentuRa it is not only about the music, but also the enthusiasm, the dance, the feeling of energy. You hear it, you see it and you feel it. A celebration of Local and International work
International work B
rouhaha International leads the way in the development and delivery of arts engagement and carnival arts delivery at an international level. Through our partnership across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and the Mediterranean Rim we are able to create large-scale mobile performances that involve artists and communities.
U-CARE Urban Culture Against Racism in Europe. This project sees 11 organisations in 8 countries join forces and pool their knowledge to combine an anti-racist/anti-discrimination peer coaching approach with urban culture and media. Young people with diverse cultural backgrounds will be trained in national seminars and an international summer academy 2013 to become U-CARE coaches. They will be empowered to spread the message of increasing mutual understanding and combating racism and discrimination.
Amsterdam Carnival (the Netherlands) Brouhaha returned for a second year of carnival, producing a aparafde through the city centre canals. Leading to performances by carnival troupes in the famous Dam square.
Larache Carnival (Morocco) Brouhaha international with its Dutch and Moroccan partners delivered a 600 costumed parade - showcasing our large scale carnival work. This was a first for the city of Larache, Brouhaha hopes to return in 2014.
Istanbul Carnival (Turkey) Brouhaha International produces a new carnival parade working with children and young people in Istanbul - Performers from the Netherlands, Hungry, UK and Turkey will deliver workshops prior to the carnival parade.

rouhaha continues to look for new ways to work with young people in the development of arts and employment opportunities. 2013 sees us set up tow new young people’s micro enterprises.
Global Cafe
T
his youth initiative sees young people explore and share skills through cooking workshops, making dishes from around the world. They will then set up a mobile catering unit visiting a number of festival to promote their food and begin to create a micro enterprise.
Rainbow Designs T
his youth initiative sees young people play the key role in developing their creative skills by setting up their own non for profit micro enterprise, a t-shirt printing company. The theme of ‘cultural diversity’ will be explored through creative design and they will produce work that promotes positive images and statements that support a greater understanding of diversity.
