A Family Affair

From The Executive Director: Davies Bisset ’85 Alumni, Parents and Friends: I want to start with a roaring Brunonian welcome to the class of 2019 student-athletes, and to all our new Brown students! You can count on us to cheer for you, and to support you, during your time at Brown. Davies Bisset ’85 with Bill Quigley ’86, P’16 at the 24th Annual Welcome also to our new Brown parents. BFA Golf Classic and Season Kickoff Dinner in August. No doubt, we will get to know many of you over the next four years. Parents make such an impact on Brown with their generous support in all its forms. As members of the Brown Athletics family, you will be invited to Sports Foundation gatherings and other special events throughout the year. Thank you for sending your sons and daughters to Brown! I am very happy to report that we smashed through our fundraising goals this past fiscal year. Thank you to all the alumni, parents, and friends for your generosity. The totals are described in the following pages but we can proudly say that nearly 6,000 alumni, parents and friends made gifts to Brown Athletics totaling close to $12 million dollars. Of this total, more than $3.6M went to our annual use effort and the rest supported a variety of endowments, projects, trips, and initiatives for our teams. I don’t have to remind you that fall is a great time of year in Providence. The campus looks terrific after a summer of rest and renovation and the students bring back the energy and buzz to Brown. Thayer Street, Wriston Quad, Pembroke, Keeney, and the Main Green come alive again. Please be in touch if you find yourself in the area and stop by to visit. We would love to see you at a game this year. The BUSF will hit the road this fall, visiting many of our alumni, parents, and friends across the country. We try to coordinate our events with away contests as often as possible. We’ll also hold numerous events on campus, including the popular BUSF pre-game tailgate under the tent in Lot A before each home football game. You can usually find President Paxson and her husband under the tent! Our fall teams start competition in September and you can always find schedules, rosters, and team news on the athletic department’s website, brownbears.com. This will be a big year for Brown Athletics ---- we can feel it already ---- come back and be part of the positive momentum! Hope to see you in the stands, and until then, I will remain, Ever True,

Charlie Enright ’08 (left) and Mark Towill ’11 (right) with Head Coach of Brown Sailing John Mollicone and the rest of the Brown sailors in between the sixth and seventh legs of the Volvo Ocean Race which stopped in Newport in May.

"There's Always More To Be Done."

For Charlie Enright ’08 and Mark Towill ’11, racing around the world just isn't enough. After completing the harrowing Volvo Ocean Race around the world, Mark Towill ’11 and fellow sailor Charlie Enright ’08 sat down in Enright’s native Bristol, RI just 72 hours after their first extended stay on land in nearly a month. The race set sail in Alicante, Spain in October and concluded in Gothenburg, Sweden in late June. For the two sailors, it’s all about the water and what’s next. “I definitely want to take some time, get on land for a bit, live the ‘normal life’," said Mark Towill ’11 after returning home from the nine-month journey around the world. “But I think both of us are pretty high octane guys. Normal life for me is still being on that boat. The land is the foreign part.”

PHOTOS COURTESY: AINHOA SANCHEZ, VOLVO OCEAN RACE; INSIET - AMORY ROSS/TEAM ALVIMEDICA

“It’s nice to have some time to breathe,” said Enright. “But we do what we do because we love it. There’s always a hankering to get back out there.” By all measure, the race was a success for Enright and Towill and the rest of Team Alvimedica. They earned line honors in the ninth and final leg from Lorient, France to Gothenburg, Sweden and finished fifth overall of seven teams. It was a grueling journey that even featured a rescue mission off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa in late November when Enright made the decision to turn around and assist a grounded competitor. When Towill discussed the planning for the next Volvo Ocean Race in 2017, he said, “There’s more to be done, there’s always more to be done.” It could easily serve as a credo for their lives. There is always an adventure to be had out at sea, but there’s work to be done on land as well. This August in Bristol, Enright and his wife, Meris ’08, welcomed a son, Thomas Paul, to the family while Towill spent a few weeks in his native Hawaii for R&R and competed in another regatta in Spain the first week of August. The duo is working tirelessly on sponsorship acquisition for 2017. The main focus for the next 6-12 months is securing funding for the next campaign. Enright and Towill credit the lessons learned at Brown both on the water with Head Coach John Mollicone and in the classroom with Brown professors (the famed Barret Hazeltine mentioned specifically). “If I went to a cookie cutter college, I probably wouldn’t have been able to do this,” said Towill. “There are no scripts or instructions to complete what we just did,” added Enright. “It’s like that at Brown as a freshman. You show up and you have to just figure it out. They provide you with all of the tools and avenues to succeed, but it’s up to you to take it on.” It’s been a hectic year, certainly, but there’s always time for adventure. At the conclusion of the Volvo Ocean Race, the duo flew from Sweden to the U.S. and the next day jumped on a different boat and took line honors in the Rolex Transatlantic from Newport to Cowes, England, the world’s oldest trans-oceanic yacht race. There’s more to be done, there’s always more to be done.

A Family Affair 14

Brown University Sports Foundation

Brown Women's Soccer boasts two female legacies, with both mother and daughter competing for legendary head coach Phil Pincince P’06, as women's athletics moves into second generation student-athletes. In October of 2012, Brown University held a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Title IX, the landmark legislation intended to provide equal opportunity in education for men and women. Head Coach Phil Pincince P’06 joined an esteemed panel, including Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris, and ESPN commentator Doris Burke (Former Providence College basketball player), to discuss the importance of that legislation and the state of women’s athletics in the 21st century. Now 43 years after the induction of Title IX in 1972, and the introduction of University-funded varsity athletics in 1973-74, second generation female student-athletes are making their mark on Universities across the country and at Brown.

(Top) Michelle Jolson ’16 and former Brown forward-turned keeper Julie Roth Jolson ’83, P’16. (Left) No. 9's Ellen Schmidt ’87, SCM ’88, P’18 and Katy Schmidt ’18.

In 2015, Pincince and Brown Women’s Soccer will boast two female varsity legacies. While same-sport male legacies are a common theme throughout athletics (not to mention the hard-to-believe multi-generation studentathlete legacies such as brothers Thomas Gilbane ’33 AM ’58, P’69, P’71, GP’98, GP’02, GP’05 and William Gilbane ’33 AM’58, P’70, GP’84, GP’86, GP’87, GP’90, GP’93, GP’95, GP’99, GP’01, GP’03, GP’14), it’s only in the last five years that women’s athletics are welcoming daughters of former female student-athletes. Under Pincince’s direction on Stevenson Field, you’ll find Michelle Jolson ’16 and Katy Schmidt ’18. In the stands you’ll see and hear former Pincince-led Ivy Champions Julie Roth Jolson ’83, P’16 and Ellen Schmidt ’87, P’16.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

15

Both the elder Jolson and Schmidt competed and succeeded on Stevenson Field as student-athletes. Julie Jolson was part of the 1980 Brown squad that won the school’s first-ever Ivy Championship. A forward by trade when joining the Bears as a freshman in 1980, she became a goalkeeper by necessity following an injury to the starter and lack of depth on the roster. An injury suffered junior year derailed hopes of playing as a senior, but the Ivy League championship watch received as a freshman has been a memento with meaning to both mother and daughter, as Michelle wore the watch during college entrance exams. Ellen Schmidt roamed the field during one of the true dynasties in Ivy League history, winning four-straight Ivy League titles as the middle cog of a nine-year dominance in Julia Jolson's 1980 Ivy League Championship watch. The 1980 the Ivy League for Pincince and the Bears. Schmidt and the womens' soccer team claimed the first women's Ivy League 1984 Brown squad, ranked No. 1 in the nation for two weeks title in any sport. that season, were inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005, with three individuals from the 1984 team eventually finding their way into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame. For the parents, the love of Brown leads to the hope, or even a push depending on who you ask, that the daughters will attend and thrive on the same field and on the same campus. “As a parent, it’s hard to balance out the realization that anywhere your child goes, there’s no guarantee for playing time. What matters is your child’s happiness as part of the team, with or without playing time,” said Julie Jolson, whose husband, Robert ’82, played baseball at Brown. “To me, I thought knowing the school, and Phil especially, I thought Michelle would be happy at Brown.” Both parents stressed the knowledge that the happiness of their daughter depends on more than just winning on the field; who will you compete with, who will teach the lessons – those are the facts that matter.

“We felt very comfortable with our daughter going to school 3,000 miles away because Phil will teach her humility and responsibility and many of the lessons we want to teach as parents,” said Ellen Schmidt.

Ellen Schmidt ’87, SCM ’88, P’18 helped lead Brown to four straight Ivy Titles. The 1984 squad was inducted into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

When choosing a college, student-athletes look at everything from Brown’s renowned open curriculum, to the coaching style and team history. For Michelle Jolson, a family legacy played a key role in the decision, even if mom disagrees. “I knew my parents both went there, and my uncle (James Roth ’78) and grandfather (Wesley Roth ’54, P’78, P’83, GP’16) were in love with Brown, so obviously I knew they would want me to come here,” said Michelle. “But I wanted to make sure Phil wanted me and I would be a good fit. My parents didn’t force

Based on research with coaches, alumni, administrators, and the athletic historian, Dr. Peter Mackie ’59 - author of the always popular Bear Tracks (pg. 42), Brown varsity female legacies can be traced to Brown Women's Crew and Marcia ’77, P’09, P’11 and Annie Hooper ’11. Marcia and Annie both take active roles in the development and enhancement of the program as members of the Friends of Brown Women's Crew. Marcia currently serves as the FoBWC President while Annie, a member of the 2011 NCAA Champions, serves as the events chair.

“It was so fitting I thought,” said Ellen Schmidt. “Taking a line Phil would always say to us on the sidelines, we repeated it to Katy, ‘It’s in your hands girls, what are you going to do?’ Obviously we were thrilled she got in and wanted to attend Brown.”

me, but I knew they loved Brown. Obviously I loved it here once I came to campus. You get that feeling right away that this is the place for me.” “It’s not like we dragged her to campus for each reunion and were singing the fight song at home,” said Julie Jolson with a laugh. Ellen Schmidt was sure to stress the importance of Katy making the decision, especially after talking with Coach Pincince about the prospects of her daughter earning a spot on the team. “Phil said it very bluntly that he’s not going to take her if she’s not the quality he wants. Which you don’t expect anything less from a legitimate coach,” she said.

For the two families going forward, it’s about enjoying the incredible opportunity to watch their daughters compete on the same field and to learn from the coach that taught them so much on the field and in life. There have been a very select few motherdaughter legacies that have experienced varsity athletics at Brown since 1973. Few have had the joy of watching their daughters run onto the field and wear the Brown B (ignoring the mustard yellow jersey from Jolson’s 1980 campaign). For Julie Jolson and Ellen Schmidt, it’s an unforgettable experience.(EVER TRUE IN HERE SOMEHOW?) “Watching Katy run onto the field…it was unbelievable,” said Schmidt. “I felt very blessed and proud and happy that my daughter can experience this incredible time.” “Senior year is going to be emotional for me,” said Julie Jolson. “I’ve been able to come in and meet a lot of her teammates too. That sense of team is the thing you carry on after you leave. That’s what she’ll remember. I loved it here, she has too.”

Brown Women's Lacrosse also boasts a mother-daughter legacy, with a tie to Brown Women's Soccer as well. Darcy Caldwell ’82, P’11, P’15 competed for both programs and has watched both daughters take the field for Head Coach Keely McDonald ’00 and Brown Women's Lacrosse. - If there are other athletic female legacies predating the Hooper family in the fall of 2011, please let us know! In My Mother's Pawprints By Michelle Jolson ’16, a psychology concentrator, and a senior on the women's soccer team.

A

s I embark on my senior year, I’ve been looking back on my experiences at Brown as both a student and an athlete, and traced my path even further back to what led me to Brown in the first place: my mom. My parents met at Brown in 1980, my dad a member of the baseball team while my mom played soccer. Growing up in a loving and very active family, my childhood was filled with sports. My mom’s cardinal rule in our household was that balls, frisbees, bats, and rollerblades were permitted in the house, with the caveat that if any of her three children went on to play collegiate sports we had to publicly thank her- so thanks mama! My mom not only encouraged sports in our house--at the expense of artwork, lamps, televisions, and many plates--but also on the court, track, field, and pitch. She was my basketball, softball, and soccer coach for thirteen years. Mom taught me how to shoot a basketball with the perfect follow through, how to slide into home plate in softball, and just about everything when it came to soccer.

"My mom’s cardinal rule in our household was that balls, frisbees, bats, and rollerblades were permitted in the house."

She would hold the ball against the ground with her hands as I ran up and kicked it again and again with my laces to make sure I mastered the proper technique to strike a shot. She ran me through countless Michelle Jolson ’16 and the Bears will battle for the heading exercises until I learned to attack the ball rather than letting program's 13th Ivy League title in 2015. the ball hit me. It wasn’t until I attended the Brown Soccer School for the first time when I was fourteen that I realized that much of the knowledge my mom had about soccer came from her time playing soccer at Brown for Phil Pincince P’06. With this season as my last, I am even more appreciative of my status as a Brown student-athlete and how that brings me even closer to my mom. When I was applying to Brown, I took my mom’s Ivy League championship watch to all my standardized testing as a lucky charm. Now as I plan for my future and am in the process of applying to graduate schools, I cannot help but be reminded that this is my final chance to win an Ivy title. No matter if I end this season with an Ivy League championship ring on my finger or not, I will walk away with the satisfaction and fulfillment of having played soccer on the same field, for the same coach, and for the same university as my mom.

BOUNCING BACK FROM INJURY Brown University Sports Foundation

Have No Limits By Payton Smith ’17, a double concentrator in literary arts and American studies, and a middle blocker on the volleyball team.

“I

’ve moved past seeing myself as limited because I can’t and won’t think that way. We are only given one body and one life to live it in,” said Clare Olivares, a fellow middle blocker on the Brown volleyball team. Suffering from a physical injury, no matter the amount of time it lingers or the location on the body that it impedes, is a tremendous difficulty to overcome. An injury to your body can be life altering, especially for an athlete who relies on physicality to succeed or even to simply participate in the sport. After a traumatic high school injury, Clare continues to endure the physical and emotional pain of being both an injured person and a top line student-athlete. Clare’s junior year of high school was brutal, and not only because it was the year of the ominous SATs. She was diagnosed with a herniated disc and a stress fracture in her lower back in April of that year and was in constant pain everyday during and after volleyball practice. Clare claims the peak of her trouble was “one practice I was hitting a ton and the pain finally came to a point where I had to go lay down on the floor because of its severity. I couldn’t even talk.” Despite her effort in physical therapy, the agony persisted. In November she underwent a procedure to remove part of the herniated disc that was impinging on her nerve. The surgery helped her pain, but did not get rid of it completely.

"I love how we are a family on and off the court. I cannot imagine life without the sport or without my team."

Clare Olivares ’17 has worked tirelessly to earn a spot at the net for Brown Volleyball.

Playing volleyball with a spastic back is nearly impossible because of the constant jumping, lateral movements, and strenuous arm swinging. Especially after surgery, Clare almost gave up hope of ever trying to be the player she once was. Resilience and genuine passion saved her. Though her back hinders her, it has also nurtured her relentless drive to succeed and has pushed her to be the player she once was. Broken or injured are not words in Clare’s vocabulary and she never lets her back pain bring down her positivity.

The most difficult part for Clare today is understanding her limits and more importantly, listening to those limits. The support and care from her family, teammates, coaches, and trainers help to aid her daily battle, though most of that battle is fought alone. Clare arrives hours early to the gym; stretches, heats and prepares her back for every game; finds creative ways to keep comfortable during bus rides; and takes initiative to find ways in which she can continue to lift and condition with the team. It is a battle, but one that she is winning.

"It's tough to recover from back injuries, especially as a middle blocker. Clare competes hard everyday at practice and shows a lot of fight. She won't be truly satisfied until she is a consistent game time contributor."

- Head Volleyball Coach Diane Short P’10

Why does she remain on the team when it would be so simple for her to follow in many other injured athlete’s footsteps and give up? She states, “first and foremost, I love this game. I love the work I put into it. I love the team I get to be a part of and I love how we are a family on and off the court. I cannot imagine life without the sport or without my team.” Brown volleyball would not be complete without Clare, not just because she is physically an amazing player and a great competitor, but because she truly inspires us to push ourselves to our limits.

The Fifth Game By Jack Blasberg ’16, an economics concentrator and two-year captain of Brown Squash.

I

Jack Blasberg ’16 will serve as captain of Brown Squash in 2015-16. Blasberg has been a steady contributor in the top half of the lineup since his arrival as a freshman, and competed at the No. 1 spot for the Bears last season.

n October of my freshman year, for the first time in my college career, I hosted high school recruits on their official visits to Brown. While my fellow freshmen and I shepherded the prospective students from the courts to our dorms, the dining halls, and to classes, the questions piled up: “What did you do to get here?” “How can I make it?” “Why does it all look so fun?” Just twelve months earlier, I had been in their shoes, asking the same questions during my own 24-hour visit. I was living the dream then and have been for the three years since.

The Brown squash team is truly a unique group with a special culture, and I have been fortunate enough to count myself a member for the past three years. From day one, everyone has been encouraged and expected to be his true self. The ladder knows no distinction between freshman and senior, and so barriers are broken down as spots are earned. Between training together every day in the Pitz, lifting three days a week in the Zucconi Strength and Conditioning Center, and team dinners in the V-Dub every night, this group has become family. And when an experience is so fulfilling that you encourage your actual brother (Charles Blasberg ’18) to come join you, that’s when you know that it has been truly meaningful. Sometimes, though, squash can get stressful. Points pile up into a deficit that you cannot fathom the energy or the time required to surmount. For a game with no clock, the seconds sure are costly as they tick away and the miles pile up. Nor does there seem to be sufficient time outside of the court walls. Not enough time for us to get that stud recruit or to hone our skills to the point that we are as good as those imports featured on some of our opponents’ teams. As a senior, it is impossible not to look up at the clock at the end of the Kate Brodsky Squash Pavilion and avoid thinking about how my time on the team is nearly over. In obsessing over the time left, I sometimes forget the process that has taken the team and me to this point. I forget how good it feels to run around the court until I can’t possibly lunge to retrieve another ball, the time we ran until we puked, and the countless hours spent honing shots that still aren’t quite perfect. People ask about the records, the rankings, and it’s easy to get caught up in those achievements – but they aren’t what matters. The hours together that brought us all to where we are now, entering another season and welcoming the next wave of freshmen into our tight group, are the numbers that mean the most to me. In my final year, I am not going to sweat the little things. I will relish small pieces of the experience, like the eight-mile run and early practices during intersession, without dreading the passage of a second. My focus won’t be on how much time is left, but on experiences compiled in the past three years – and counting – on the team. I will treasure each shot, each squat, each suicide as we put the work in to make sure that this final year is the best one yet. Because if squash has taught me anything, it is that if you leave everything out on the court you can extend the rally and make the experience last forever.

“I warn athletes that in a blink of an eye their college squash careers are over. Jack has always savored every moment of practice, competition, and team camaraderie to its fullest. In ten years time he will not be saying 'If only' because he is not leaving any stones unturned."

- Broadbent Family Head Coaching Chair for Squash Racquets Stuart le Gassick

Gym. In addition, a new chow hall, Flat Top, was created from a surplus government building which was placed on Lincoln Field. Veterans provided a major impetus for many of Brown’s teams. Battle-tested, they reveled in their status as college students competing on the fields of friendly strife. The makeshift schedules and constantly changing rosters of wartime became stable and several sports which had been discontinued before the war were reinstated, as Brown began its run-up toward Ivy League competition in the mid 1950’s.

Brown Athletics after World War II: The Invasion of the Veterans By Peter Mackie ’59

As Brown emerged from World War II, the groundwork had been laid for a new athletic conference. The signing of the first Ivy Group Agreement by the eight presidents in November 1945 capped a long and winding process in which Brown was finally included in this group of old eastern colleges. However, the completion of this football-only agreement was far from the major campus story after the war. That distinction belonged to the campus population change resulting from the influx of veterans. Nearly 500 of them entered the Veterans Extension Division (later named the Veterans College) under the GI Bill. President Wriston’s September 25th, 1946 Convocation speech welcomed the veterans: “You are not stepchildren of Brown. On the contrary, you have been favored by a radical and, to many, unbelievable change in policy … You are meeting regular curriculum requirements.” The reference referred to the fact that this was the first time that extension courses would be granted full credit. The vets may not have been stepchildren, but some had to bunk in at Lyman Gym, while others (100 married GI’s and their families) were billeted at Brown Town, a temporary collection of seven former Navy barracks transported to a city-owned lot adjacent to Marvel

Football was the major beneficiary of the Veterans College, and “Rip” Engel’s 1948 and ’49 squads were the most successful in years. After a 7-2 campaign in 1948, the 1949 team received a rallying cry from Athletic Director Paul Mackesey ’32; "Nine for Nine in ’49.” More than half of the 61-man squad were veterans, many of whom played for four years because of the post-war policy which allowed freshman to play varsity. This fun-loving group raced through the season with only one misstep (a 27- 14 loss at Princeton), saving its best for last. On Thanksgiving Day, they rallied from a 26-14 deficit with six minutes remaining to beat Colgate 41-26. The Paterno brothers, Joe ’50 and George ’50 led the way in the miracle comeback, accounting for 222 of Brown’s 321 total rushing yards. After the game, co-captains John Scott ’50 and Joe Paterno ’50 presented coach "Rip" Engel with the team's most improved award. Although they just missed perfection, the 1949 team’s record would not be equaled for 27 seasons. In 1976, John Anderson’s Bruins won their first Ivy title and also finished with an 8-1 slate. Perhaps the most remarkable and inspiring story of this era was the resumption of Men’s Crew. Brown’s oldest intercollegiate sport, crew had been abandoned in the 1880’s before two prep school oarsman wrote freshmen papers on the topic of crew in 1947. Both received D’s for their efforts, but in the process they found each other and began lobbying for a crew at Brown. James Donaldson '51 and Harlan Bartlett ’51 met with President Wriston about their dream, and the President curtly replied that crew would be a Brown-supported sport “over my dead body.” The duo persevered however, and formed the Brown Rowing Club. They purchased an ancient Harvard shell from Donaldson’s prep school (St. Andrews) for $100 and transported it to Providence on the top of Bartlett’s family Oldsmobile. They were also given oars by Princeton and Yale on the trip home.

The Club began rowing out of the Narragansett Boat Club, launching from a World War II Navy float which was towed from Melville, RI to the Boat Club. Competition began with a three-race schedule in 1949 against Yale and Dartmouth JV’s and the Amherst Varsity. Brown’s first victory came against Clark University in 1950. The legacy from those modest beginnings lives on today at Marston Boathouse, where Brown men and women compete at the highest levels of the sport.

Volunteer coach Bob Read instructs the 1949 men’s crew from the World War II gunnery target float, which had been towed to the Narragansett Boat Club.

An equally inspiring renaissance occurred with Men’s Ice Hockey, which had been discontinued in 1939 because of budget cutting at the end of the Great Depression. In 1946 an informal team called the Clippers coached by campus barber Frank Mazzeo practiced on an outdoor rink on Aldrich Field. In 1947, Brown’s version of The Miracle on Ice began, when Wescott E. S. Moulton ’31, former hockey All-American and Director of Student Recreation convinced President Wriston that hockey had a future at Brown. Lou Pieri ’20, made his RI Auditorium available, and Moulton enticed top talent to Providence. Early recruits were future All-Americans Don Whiston ’51, a Coast Guard veteran, and Bob Wheeler ’52. Moulton’s Bruins won the Pentagonal League title in 1950 and 1951, and advanced to the 1951 NCAA Finals, finishing as runner-up, Brown’s highest-ever finish.

Following hockey’s NCAA season, Brown baseball under coach Wilfred “Lefty” Lefebrve, who was a full-time teacher at Hope High also enjoyed successful back-to-back seasons, after having joined the EIBL in 1949. In 1951, they nearly gained a berth in the NCAA tournament in Omaha, losing to Springfield College in a three game play-in. The Bruins won game one in Providence, and lost two heart-breakers at Springfield. In the deciding game, a highly questionable call by the second base umpire ruled that a line-drive single hit a Brown runner, resulting in the loss of a run and snuffing out a potential game-winning inning. Final score: Springfield 3, Brown 2. Next season the nine tied Cornell for the EIBL title. Wrestling and Cross country also returned to Brown’s growing intercollegiate program after the war. Ralph Anderton ’30 quickly built the grapplers into EIWA contenders, and in 1951, his squad, led by All-American J. Dana Eastham ’53, finished 8-1, the best season in 20 years. Ivan Fuqua, who began coaching cross country and track in 1946, quickly brought both back to prominence. The harriers, led by the Tobey twins (John ’50 and Josh ’50), lost only one meet and followed up in 1947 with another one-loss season and strong showings in the Heps and IC4A’s. Track and Field won the New England’s in 1949, and featured outstanding performers such as Olympian hammer thrower Bob Bennett ’48, national high jump champion Dick Phillips ’50 and Gil Borgeson ’52, who won two national shot put titles. As the veterans cycled through Brown, administrators hailed their contributions as athletes and students. The noble experiment had been a resounding success and Flat Top and Brown Town became memories. Thanks to the contributions of veterans and non-veterans during this post-war interlude, Brown seemed well-positioned for the beginning of Ivy League play in 1956, when competition would be ratcheted up to an even-higher level.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Brown University Sports Foundation

"I have loved every moment of it. That is reward enough."

Bill Corrigan's ’58 unmatched service to the families, friends, and fans of Brown Hockey. Simply put, there can be few, if any, alumni who can approach Bill Corrigan’s ’58 record of volunteer service to Brown. He was varsity men’s hockey manager and after moving back to Rhode Island, joined the newly-formed Brown Hockey Association in 1965. He served continually on the Board until his recent announcement that he was stepping down as Executive Director and Treasurer. His involvement in the BHA has spanned 50 years. Bill has been the face of Brown Men’s Hockey for generations of players and hockey aficionados. Many have sought his council and wisdom, and he was mentor to countless others. Until a serious illness interrupted the streak a decade ago, he attended every home game from 1965 on, and most road games. Like the hockey memorabilia in the Meehan Auditorium trophy case which bears his name, Bill Corrigan is a Brown Hockey treasure!

Bill Corrigan ’58 has been a fixture with Brown Hockey for more than 50 years

Bill’s quiet, steady leadership has always been his hallmark. When the Board met recently and the current BHA President, Matt Parker ’88, said that the BHA was going to honor Bill all season long, starting next fall, Bill’s response was; “No need. I have loved every moment of it. That is reward enough.” Likewise, The RI Brown Club has been the beneficiary of Bill’s loyal service from 1965 to 2014, a span of nearly 50 years. As in hockey, Bill organized and ran countless events, and served in leadership positions (Secretary for 10 years, Treasurer for 8 years, Vice President and President). Serving such long terms was not the Brown Club norm.

What is most singular about Bill is that he is absolutely self-effacing, humble, and low-key, always flying below the public radar. He does his job quietly, cheerfully, competently, and unobtrusively, while avoiding the limelight. Bill’s integrity is beyond reproach. He has always been active with the Class of ’58, and can often be found at a wide range of Brown athletic events. Bill Corrigan is simply Ever True.

Expressions of Support and Admiration “Bill, wow, I don't know what to say! You have been a bedrock to the program and community for so long that it's difficult to imagine Brown Hockey without you leading the charge in some official capacity.” - Matt Parker ’88 President, Brown Hockey Association

“You've been Mr. Brown Hockey for so long that it's hard to imagine a BHA without you at the helm. Through the various coaching staffs, officers, board members, and the transition from a largely self-governing body into the umbrella of the Brown Sports Foundation, you've provided the glue that has held our association together. Thanks for your service!” - Luiz Valente PHD ’83 Brown Professor

“As Brown hockey players we were always asked to give 110% on and off the ice. We’d wear the Brown sweater with great pride and play our hardest a vast majority of the time … yet there were still some nights when we seemingly just “didn’t show up”. That can’t be said of your performance over a mind-boggling 60 years! You were always there for all of us – a “constant” in the program – giving 150% ALL the time.” - Mark Rechan ’87 “Not only have you been the enduring backbone of the BHA, but you have been a friend to players, coaches, and all members of the Brown hockey family. Patsy and I salute you for your dedicated contributions to Brown hockey, but above all, we value your friendship and look forward to enjoying many more years of hockey at Meehan with you.” - Bob ’67 and Patsy Blackburn P’98

“Bill I can't express with words how much you mean to Brown Hockey and to me personally. You have been such a presence from my days as a player to my current tenure as the Head Coach. You were the person I could rely on in any instance and I will miss that. I am grateful for all that you do and all that you have done. Honestly, again, you mean so much to me that I can't begin to thank you enough.” - Brendan Whittet ’94 Head Coach, Men's Ice Hockey

“You are the MAN, the LEGEND, that IS Brown Hockey. My fondest memories of you as a member of the BHA are as a boy of 6 or 8 years old riding the fan bus with my family (both biological and Brown Hockey). You, strolling up and down the aisle of the bus collecting the fare and sharing jokes with everyone. I remember looking up to you as the person responsible for such a great time and tradition. Having shared that experience is a memory I will never forget. And it’s all because of you and your deep love and connection with Brown Hockey. ” - Len Ranalli ’80
