COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS
Distribution and Logistics buildings Our design expertise and experience provide a holistic view of these types of buildings with practical solutions to meet client needs. Our taper framed buildings make a perfect solution for wide uninterrupted spans suitable for these types of buildings. Spans in excess of 40m are achievable. Our teams have worked on many of these buildings where factors such as traffic flow, practical aspects of loading bay configuration, loading canopy heights as well as forklift access and egress needs to be considered. Our engineering team produces prototype 3D designs to help customers envisage a building to ensure that interpretation is 100% to their requirements.
Retail Buildings Retail Buildings require some ‘design flare’ to set them apart from standard ‘warehouse’ or ‘shed’ buildings. Often these buildings have unique ‘arcade billboard’ or ‘landmark entrance’ features to try and achieve this. Brown Engineering Group has erected steel structures for retail centres for customers such as Old Mutual Property and Bathroom Boutique. These structures require a high-quality fabrication and paint finish that is appealing to the clientele shopping in this environment. Our company possesses advanced design software to detail bespoke solutions as well as plasma cutting technology to ensure a high-end fabrication finish.
School Facilities Brown Engineering Group has constructed various school structural facilities including gymnasiums, classrooms, bus shelters, indoor hockey field coverings and sports pavilions to name a few. The structures we have produced range from simple ‘shed like’ to more complex parabolic looking structures typically acquainted with high end sporting facilities.
Warehouse/Wholesale Buildings Warehouse/wholesale buildings need large uninterrupted spans in-order for the tenant to achieve maximum utility. As with other types of structures, warehousing can be for general use or be very specific. Certain types of warehousing may be specialist such as Tobacco Warehousing, where racking and storage heights are key considerations in the design. Some warehouses have multilevel requirements where forklift or elevator access and loading points are key. Whatever your requirement, Brown Engineering Group has the expertise to deliver your warehousing project.
INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS Bottling Plants Bottling plant specifications are guided by best practice in the food and beverage industry. As such, ensuring a dust free structure that is well lit and can support the required mechanical services such as HVAC, pipe racks and sprinkler systems is key. Brown Engineering Group possesses the technical expertise and experience to work with clients and ensure projects such as these can be delivered successfully.
Heavy Industrial Buildings These buildings need to be designed to withstand harsh conditions for lengthy life spans. Typically lifting gantries feature in these types of buildings. These buildings also tend to have paint coating specifications that involve abrasive blasting steel preparation followed by twin pack paint systems. Brown Engineering Group has successfully delivered high spec buildings and we make for a great partner to help clients achieve a successful project of this nature.
Manufacturing Plants Manufacturing plants tend to have similar requirements to Heavy Industrial Buildings, although they tend to be lighter structures. Again, gantries can feature as a key part of the design. Manufacturing plants tend to be simple shed or warehouse type structures or more bespoke and complex, depending on customer requirements. Brown Engineering Group is equally equipped to give quick and simple cost-effective solutions to work with the customer to deliver projects of a more bespoke nature. Common manufacturing plant requirements are mezzanine admin or storage spaces. We have delivered many mezzanine structures and stairways which can add value to projects requiring these features.
STEEL BUILDING FAQ’s Why steel structures? • Reduced construction time up to 40% faster than traditional methods. • Lower cost: Savings are generally attained due to the speed of the steel building process. • PEB (Pre-Engineered Building) systems are used to reduce standard profiles and improve weight efficiencies. • Large clear spans: Steel buildings can be designed to span up to 90m of uninterrupted space that is column free. • Kit forms: supply to remote locations in kit form whereby everything needed for the building arrives in a single or multiple load. • Flexibility of expansion: Steel buildings can easily be designed and fabricated in phases to suit a client’s budget and expansion plans. • Improved quality Control • Low maintenance: High quality paint systems and modern cladding systems ensure these types of buildings have durable long-lasting finishes and relatively little costs over the years.
PITCHES AND TRUSS TYPES Brown Engineering Group will utilize different truss types to achieve defined customer objectives. LATTICE TRUSSES: For structures spanning up to around 24m wide, lattice structures are extremely light and cost effective. BEG has installed hundreds of thousands of square meters of these structures in the region from Agriculture to poultry to commercial applications. They cannot be beaten on simplicity, time and cost parameters when it comes to lighter and narrower structures. Lattice structures are predominantly made from angle iron which tends to be the cheapest steel in terms of $/tonne. PORTAL TRUSS STRUCTURES Portal Truss Structures tend to be cost effective from 25m to 32m spans offering a shallow truss structure, where eves clearance is important. These structures utilize ‘hot rolled sections’ of steel, mainly I Beams and have reduced part counts for ease of fabrication. These structures have a ‘chic’ clean looking appearance popular for retail show rooms and the like. BEG has years of experience in installing a range of portal structures from small to large structures.
TAPER FRAMED TRUSSED BUILDINGS Taper Framed Trussed buildings also known as Pre-Engineered Beams (PEB’s) are some of the most efficient steel buildings when spanning in excess of 30m and up to 90m. In pre-engineered buildings, the trusses used are usually formed by welding together steel plates to form the I section. These structures tend to be very efficient with high structural performance on larger span structures. Brown Engineering Group has fabricated many Megastructures covering up to 20 000m2 with this method. Taper Framed Structures require specific fabrication techniques and equipment such as Plasma Tables which BEG has on its shop floor. A big advantage of this type of structure is speed of procurement as BEG stock materials for typical PEB sizes.
CASTELLATED BEAMS A castellated beam is a beam style where a hot rolled I-beam is subjected to a longitudinal cut along its web following a specific pattern in order to divide it and reassemble the beam with a deeper web by taking advantage of the cutting pattern. There are significant cost savings for the end user by increasing the performance of structures in this way. BEG is kitted out with the necessary plasma cutting machinery to produce a range of castellated beams.
