100 WORKS Spring Catalogue 2020
“[Art] does have some extraordinary functions, some odd negotiating ability between people, including people who never meet and yet who infiltrate and enrich each other’s lives. It does have the capacity to create intimacy; it does have a way of healing wounds, and better yet of making it apparent that not all wounds need healing and not all scars are ugly... We are in this together, this accumulation of scars, this world of objects, this physical and temporary heaven that so often takes on the countenance of hell. What matters is kindness; what matters is solidarity. What matters is staying alert, staying open.” -The Lonely City by Olivia Laing The gallery is pleased to present a rich selection of works to elicit a feeling of community, and to remind us of simple shared experiences that we look forward to again in the hopefully not too distant future. Whether the images evoke personal memories, transport you to a moment or reverie, or simply provide a brief welcome distraction, we hope they also serve as a testament to the communal experience of art. From ancient cave drawings to photographs taken just yesterday, art has allowed people to speak to each other across physical and temporal distances. At its most powerful, art is about the stories that connect us, and we hope these images speak to you now, as the story continues.

Vistas by Brea Souders contains the disembodied shadows of human beings, all of which find common provenance in national parks, forests and nature preserves throughout the American West. The foundation images are culled from Google Photo Sphere—a recent technology that stitches together many photographs to form a 360-degree view as considered from the ground. Unlike Google Street View, Photo Spheres are captured by individuals deep in nature, often far off the beaten path. In the stitching process, the algorithm curiously removes the human body itself, leaving only the fragmented trace of the photographer floating over or merging with the landscape. The project explores multiple themes—dematerialized human experience in the face of technology; a longing to connect with the natural world and crossing the chasm between lived and virtual experience; environmental concern and documentation; and the phenomenon of sharing shadow selfies, one that echoes previous moments through photographic history. The hand coloring is loosely inspired by souvenir postcards and allows for the photographs to take on a dramatized nature. The images carry in them our quests for the transcendental, and touch on an often-elusive prize: mystical experience deep in the wild.

Range: of Masters of Photography considers an analog history of photography within the digital torrent that is its current technological manifestation. Penelope Umbrico steadies her focus on the mountain: oldest subject, stable object, singular, immovable landmark, site of orientation, place of spiritual contemplation. She employs smartphone camera applications to make new photographs of the images of mountains that appear in canonical master photographs. Pointing her iPhone down at these mountains, the hallucinogenic colors of the camera app filters blend with the disorienting effects of the iPhone’s gravity sensor. Photo grain, dot-screen, pixel, and screen resolution collide, often performing undulating moirÊs. Her mountains are unstable, mobile, have no gravity, change with each iteration, re-mastered. Here is the biggest distance, the longest range. She presents a dialogue between distance and proximity, limited and unlimited, the singular and the multiple, the fixed and the moving, the master and the copy. Umbrico proposes an inverse correlation between the number of images that exist of mountains at any one time, and the stability of photography at that time. Penelope Umbrico Range: of Masters of Photography Silencio, Paris, France

As a sight common to all inhabitants of Earth, the moon is easily photographable by anyone with a decent camera, yet numerous proprietary claims to multiple similar images of it exist. This friction between public and private speaks volumes about the state of photography in the digital age—the driving force of Umbrico’s creative practice.
