WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN
Good afternoon and welcome to our friends from Corinthian for what is an important game for both teams.
The last two months have been very frustrating, not least because we have only played five matches and not been able to build any sort of momentum.
Weather permitting, we will now get that opportunity with ten games in a SaturdayTuesday sequence to come through February and the early part of March. With most of the teams around us to play, and a lot of them at home, the opportunity to climb into mid-table and establish ourselves there is available for us to take.
We are back here on Tuesday for the first of those midweek games when Faversham are our visitors. Make some noise for the boys today - come on you Wasps!

MANAGER’S NOTES
We welcome everyone back for today's key match against Corinthian.
After a flurry of postponements and last week's defeat to Sevenoaks we find ourselves towards the bottom end of the table. That being said, we have just under half the season to go and have three or four games in hand on several teams above us. The table is very congested at the moment and a win or two can send us to mid-table so we are by no means panicking. At Sevenoaks last week we got our equaliser in the second half and I thought we might go on and win the game but. as we have found throughout the season, the margins for error in this division are wafer-thin.
We have eight games to play this month, so the squad is going to be really tested and pushed to its limits. Keeping everyone fit will be important. There have been lots of impressive signings going on in our league recently with some teams recruiting former full-time players.
We are more than happy with our squad and how they are training and playing. We have been unlucky in our last two fixtures with really harsh losses. We need to focus on the five home games we have this month and make sure we achieve the points target we have set the lads as we know that in March we have four very tough games against teams in the top five.
As ever, on behalf of the coaching staff and the lads, I would like to thank the fans for their support and we look forward to
their vocal backing during a busy month with lots of support needed not only here at East Court but also away.
Good luck to us! Drew.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Corinthian.
We extend a warm welcome to Michael Golding, his players and staff, the Corinthian officials and supporters, as well as to today’s referee Thomas Baines and his assistants Daniel Head and John-Patrick Kane. We trust you all enjoy your short stay and our hospitality.
Michael Golding’s Corinthian started January with a 3-0 win against Sittingbourne then lost the following two, 5-1 to Littlehampton and 10 to Beckenham Town. They then had an impressive 4-1 away victory over VCD Athletic and drew last time out against Sheppey United last Saturday.
They currently have five more points with a match in hand and are one place ahead of Faversham Town who are propping up the table with 12 points from 23 matches including a 2-0 win at Littlehampton on Tuesday evening after having picked up just one point in their six previous matches since drawing against Corinthian at the beginning of December.
When todays’ two sides met in November, it finished 1-1 after Daniel Correia Lopes put the home side ahead in the 36th minutes and Samuel (Benga) Williams equalised four minutes later.
Drew Cooney’s Wasps have slipped to fourth from bottom after somehow losing the last two matches against Chatham and Sevenoaks when they could have and arguably should have actually won both. They are on 23 points after 20 matches, six points ahead of Corinthian and with two games in hand. Things are very tight in the bottom half of the table – Lancing for example have three more points than Wasps and are three places ahead but have played four more matches - VCD Athletic are five places ahead with five more points than Wasps but have played three
more matches. A win today could see us move up three places.
This coming Tuesday starts a series of 10 matches when we are playing Tuesdays and Saturdays. We are at home again when we host Faversham Town (ko 7.30pm). We then travel to Littlehampton next Saturday and are at home again the following Tuesday against Three Bridges.
I’d like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks to all our fellow volunteers who will have nine matches, including U23s and U18s, plus a function to cover this month of February. Also a big thanks to Complete Turf Care for their great work on the pitch.
Thanks as always to our fans for their great support of the team, home and away, come rain, snow or shine.
Whatever the outcome of this afternoon’s match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoy the match

AUGUST
PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
We’ll talk about a couple of past games that we played early in the first week of February –helped by the programme that was produced for the match.
First up is East Grinstead v Molesey on Saturday 4 February 2017 – in the Isthmian League of course. Bruce Talbot’s programme notes welcome Molesey to East Court with a recall that in the away match on the first day of the season Molesey made home advantage pay by beating us 2-0.
He goes on to reflect on the number of goals that were being scored in our matches with the recent Tuesday evening match at home to Godalming being a game in point. In horrendous conditions we had lost 4-3. He wonders if at some time in the future we might find clubs at our level all playing on 4G pitches in a season lasting from April to October.
Manager Matt Longhurst was not at all pleased with our performance in that Godalming side –“we defended in what can only be described as schoolboy fashion” but he is confident that the players will respond to that poor performance for the Molesey game.
Richard Tramontin’s Chairman’s notes welcome Tom Cadman to the club – “he is the third generation Cadman that has played for the club” following father Antony and grandfather Peter Cadman who had been manager and chairman as well as playing for us (and groundsman for a couple of years as well).
There were then 24 teams in the league and the programme’s league table show us in 19th place with Molesey one place below us –though Molesey had two games in hand over us. So a win for us would have been very handy.
An early goal from Charlie Harris was followed by a second goal by Tashi Kwayie just before
half-time. Would we throw it all away in the second half? No, we didn’t and Tashi added a further goal in the middle of the second half for a 3-0 win.

Moving on a year we’ll have a look at Cray Wanderers v East Grinstead on Saturday 3 February 2018, again in the Isthmian League. There were 64 pages in the Cray Wanderers programme and while there were a good number of adverts there was still plenty to read – not necessarily about football!
The introductory notes tell us that a number of Cray’s players will miss the match – a couple of red cards in recent games plus a couple of injuries picked up in their most recent game. The league table shows Cray in second place with Lewes ahead of them and the two teams had met in Cray’s previous home match. So not surprisingly we get a very detailed match report of that game - spread over two pages.
Cray had gone into the Lewes match with a run of 23 unbeaten matches. (One of those 23 games had been a 7-0 win at East Court. They’d also had a second 7-0 win - and a 9-1 win.)
However, Lewes had won that top of the table match 2-1 (with Cray getting those two red cards in the last minute) and Cray had then lost their next match as well – again 2-1.
I mentioned lots to read in the programme. A couple of examples . On 3 February 1958 Buddy Holly - an American rock ‘n’ roll singerhad been killed in a plane crash. The programme had a page talking about him “On this day in History” – I assume this was a regular feature of the Cray programme.
And we also had an article “Gone but not forgotten” which talked about a football club called Pitsea United – “another club that used to appear on the Wands’ fixture list in the 1960s”. So again, I assume this was a regular feature. Pitsea is a small town in Essex and I went to see them play once in the 1950s – I still have the programme.
Let’s get back to our game. I’ve already told you that Cray were second – we were third from bottom. Would we take advantage of Cray’s recent form and those missing players? Five minutes before half-time Michael Power put Cray in front and five minutes after halftime Ollie Boulding equalised. And 1-1 was
We got a very good point at second-placed Cray in 2018.

how it ended. I think we were happier than Cray at the result.
CORINTHIAN
A BRIEF HISTORY
Corinthian FC was founded in 1972 by Mr RJ Billings (Snr) to provide football in a safe environment, whilst teaching the players the principles that he believed to be important in sport.
The motto was simply pro omnium beneficiofor the benefit of all, but on the pitch the principles were simple ‘hard, but fair.’ Losing wasn’t considered before the game, but if the result went against us then the players were taught to take it graciously.
For the first ten years of the club’s existence, we were pleased to welcome such teams as Tottenham, Charlton and Norwich amongst other league teams as well as county and district representative sides as our opposition. On top of these games there were many regular visitors to Gay Dawn Farm from local clubs making up a fixture list of over 60 games per season.
During the 1980s with the arrival of an experienced manager, Tony Sitford, we progressed from youth football into men’s football playing in the old Southern League. This level of football by a totally amateur club made us unique, but caused problems in the long run in attracting new players. Into the 1990s we dropped back down to the Kent League and enjoyed many a season in this set up.
Early into the new century we reviewed the whole structure of our football club and decided that we had lost our roots in youth football, and this was having a detrimental effect on our senior side. So, we decided to withdraw temporarily from senior football, whilst we rebuilt the lower levels of the club. In 2008 we had managed to create a club running five sides, from 13 through to 18years-old and it became obvious that we needed to consider the next step in our restructuring.
For two seasons we had a liaison with Welling United, integrating a senior side within them and developed a reserve side initially playing in Kent Division 2 (season 2008/09) and then moving on (2009/10) into the Suburban
League South Division. This partnership has now come to an end.
When the opportunity came for us to re-enter senior football as Corinthian Football Club, we did not hesitate to take it. Probably two years too soon, but the challenge was one we were keen to take. We introduced a second senior side playing in the Suburban League to help us progress our under-18s into men’s football.
From 2010 to 2020 saw Corinthian FC running two senior sides one in the Kent Football League Premier Division (which became the SCEFL) and one in the Suburban League South Division plus youth sides – under14, 15, 16 and 18s in the Kent Youth League. For the 2011/12 season as well as all the above, Corinthian FC had an under-18 team in the Isthmian Youth League.
Corinthian Football Club were delighted to have been promoted into the Isthmian League Division 1 South East for the 2021/22 season and finished eighth in our first season at this level.
For the 2022/23 season we have two teams –an under-18s competing in the Isthmian Youth League and the first team in the Isthmian League South-East Division.
