PREMIER DIVISION: First Grade
The Griffin Legal John I Dent cup premier division first grade has hit the midpoint of the season, with table position and results really starting to matter. Just two fixtures were played this past weekend with Gungahlin, Queanbeyan and Tuggeranong all on a bye. The first of the two match ups saw another repeat of the 2017 Grand Final between Royals and Wests. Royals opened their account in the eighth minute, blindside flanker Dean Paragalli able to slip by his defender on the left flank and dive over for a beautiful score, which Pedro Rolando converted from the touch line. Lincoln Smith snuck through the Wests defence in the 17th minute to double the Royals advantage before Rolando added a conversion and a penalty. The score 17-0 at the half. After the break, the champs turned up the power, adding two tries through their dominate pack before Seth Going finished a length of the field breakaway try to kill of the game. With five to play, Royals players and fans alike were treated to a special moment, captain and club legend Ben Johnston got over for the final score, his first since returning to the side. The final score, 43-0.
The other game in Round 10 saw Uni-Norths travel to Easts. Easts were in good spirits going into the game after touching up Wests in the previous round while the Owls were also buoyed by a win over Gungahlin. It took the Owls just one minute to stamp their authority on the game, the impressive Ben Love racing over to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. Easts responded in the 12th minute to level the scoring before Uni pounced to restore their seven-point advantage. However, Easts returned the favour again, scoring in the 35th minute to draw level with the Owls. After Uni-Norths added a pair of penalty goals, the teams traded tries once again, the visitors third of the day coming in the 47th minute with Easts’ reply coming five minutes later through Mees Erasmus. The scores resting at 21-27, the result was far from cemented going into the last quarter of the game. Uni-Norths got a scrum on Easts five and pushed the home side over the whitewash, Ben Love able to dot down for his second of the day. Easts added a beautiful try after the 80th minutes, but the result was sealed. A massive win for the Owls away from home.

FIRST DIVISION
The road to fame in rugby starts at grass root level and leads to Premier division, but it doesn’t just happen like that. Grades 5 through 2nd are filled with the lifeblood of the sport, whether the players be young and fresh faced or getting on and trying to stay in touch with their athletic side.
That victory could be key with ADFA sitting four points behind the Whites with two games in hand.
With competition on break for the long weekend, we’ll be taking a look at the upcoming fixtures while casting an eye over the big picture. Ladder position, upcoming key matchups and more.
The other team who could potentially push ADFA out of the top four is the Tuggeranong Vikings who welcome UniNorths to Viking park in Round 9.
League leaders Hall take on Cooma today looking to stay in pole position with playoffs fast approaching. Just two points separate the top three of Hall, Royals and Queanbeyan so every game is vital for finals seeding. Hall will be confident however, wooden-spooners elect Cooma having won just one game this season. Royals face a trip to middling Young while Queanbeyan have already registered their Round 9 result having played ADFA last week, picking up a bonus point win.
Goulbourn will leapfrog ADFA if they can get a result against Easts/RMC on the weekend, the combined club also with a solitary win in 2018.
Vikings represent a split in the table with Gungahlin below them in the table but thirteen match points behind. The Eagles play Wests at Nicholls Enclosed today looking to climb the ladder and separate themselves from Wests who are four points behind. In first division second grade, Gungahlin play Wests, RMC welcome Goulbourn, Uni take on Vikings, Hall come up against Cooma and perched on the top of the ladder the Queanbeyan Whites will match up with ADFA.

South Coast Monaro – 2nd Division
They may not be first division or located in Canberra, but the South Coast Monaro teams are playing just as hard and travelling farther each week as they work their way up to the big leagues in the capital. With just under half the season to go, there is still a lot of contesting to be done for third and fourth place on the ladder and potentially a shot at Taralga and Crookwell who are 10 and 14 points clear of third respectively.
The northernmost game this week is Yass as they host ADFA who are having a rough season so far without a win to their name. Yass is currently holding fourth down with a comfortable 4-point difference to fifth, but if something were to go wrong this week against ADFA, the ladder could see quite a bit of movement. The same could be said for the Gungahlin and Crookwell match at Nicholls with the Eagles in seventh taking on the top Dogs. Crookwell haven’t lost a game this year and certainly don’t plan to start now, the Eagles will be faced with a hard mountain to climb today. Battling it out for fifth and the best chance to slip into the top four, Bungendore will
16
be hosting Batemans Bay as they look to break the current deadlock. Bungendore have a better track record when it comes to points and they’ll have the home crowd, but Batemans could pull ahead and change their season this week with a strong game. Another battle of the B’s will be in Braidwood as they look for their first win of the season against Boorowa. The northerners have three wins under their belt which will give them confidence during their visit, but Braidwood will have a chance this time with the home advantage. Last but certainly not least, Jindabyne will be hosting their target; Taralga. Jindabyne have had a fairly good season so far and could really stir some trouble this weekend if they triumph over second place and bring the point’s gap down a bit. Taralga would really benefit from a win this week though as it would keep them right on Crookwell’s heels. Keep an eye on the Brumbies Rugby Facebook page for the results and good luck to everyone on field today.
Women’s Preview
WOMEN’S RUGBY THE WINNER AS BRUMBIES WOMEN FALL TO FIJI
The Brumbies Women were unable to get a winning result against Fiji Women yesterday, Monday June 11, the final score 33-7. The sun beamed over a buzzing ANU North Oval on the Queen’s birthday, a carnival atmosphere welcoming Fiji to Australia for the first time.
who dotted down for the try of the game.
The game, played with tremendous spirit and fantastic endeavor, saw the Brumbies Women compete furiously for 80 minutes with the international side. Indeed, it took the Flying Fijians twenty minutes to break down the Brumbies down. When they did however, it was spectacular.
However, as the clock hit the 80-minute mark, substitute Ema Masi broke right off the back of the scrum, found halfback Remi Wilton and she was able to sneak over for the Brumbies try, much to the delight of the home crowd.
After the sides had a breather, Fiji really turned on the style. Their try five minutes into the second stanza was simply marvelous. Fiji’s flyhalf, Merewalesi Rokovono – to a spectator, the best player on the park on the day – swept left on the Brumbies 40 metre line. The first-five then threw what was a pearler of a pass to her streaking teammate, the almost equally impressive, Roela Radiniyavuni who steamed towards the line before popping to centre Litiana Lawendrau
With five minutes to play, the Brumbies Women came to life, keen to get a try on the scoreboard to reflect their effort on the day. Battering the Fiji line for phase after phase, it looked like the Brumbies chances had gone.
Not to be outdone, fullback Sammie Wood was able to split the uprights with her conversion attempt leaving a pleasant memory in the minds of the fans and players alike. After the game, the Fiji Women and the Brumbies shared a prayer and a song, before posing for a big group photo, the camaraderie and ethos of our sport in full effect at ANU North Oval. The final score, 33-7 in favour of Fiji, the result’s importance less significant than the display by both sides on the day.

Queanbeyan’s scrum was the difference maker the last time these two sides met in the Round 3 clash. A double from Wests centre Paotonu Luteru was not enough to get the home side over the line, as Queanbeyan youngster Will Goddard kicked his side to victory behind their dominant set-piece.
