EVERYTHING TO PLAY FOR IN FINAL ROUND We’ve arrived at the final stage of the 2019 Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup regular season, and though the top four is set, the playoff seedlings are still to be decided. That’s largely down to Royals edging out Gungahlin last week in the Hahn Superdry Match of the Round, and what a game it was. The story going into round 16 was the fact that 15 Brumbies were in action around the grounds, and at Phillip Oval, the stars did shine brightest. For the Eagles, it was Henry Speight. The Fijian flyer started slow, but once he started to rev, he was unplayable at times. His try just before half time have the Eagles a comfortable lead going into the second period, but in the closing forty, the Blue Baggers big guns started to fire. Andy Muirhead breathtaking brace of tries one Royals the game, but it was a complete team effort in the second half. Ben Johnston stood up after a shaky opening stanza, Rory Scott the rookie sensation sparked, and the rest rallied behind. 25-22 a fair reflection on a game which could have gone either way, if these two teams meet in the finals, we're in for a treat. At Viking Park, the Champions put down another marker heading into the business end against Wests. Four tries from Thomas Watego headlined the 63-14 Vikings victory, with Vunipola Fifita, Noah Lolesio, Luke Gersekowski, Len Ikitau and Jayme Field all chipping in with tries of their own.

Wests had their moments as well. Tom Wright was unplayable at times when given space and he had direct input into their two tries, setting up the first and scoring the second. In the end though, Vikings were just too good, too composed and their dominant win should be a warning to potential finals opponents. In the final match of the Round, Queanbeyan Whites closed out their season against Easts. With only pride to play for, both sides gave it a good bash, but it was Queanbeyan who won out, thanks to a try-double from Fred Kaihea. For Easts, this loss perhaps hurt more than others given it may have been their last chance to notch a victory in 2019, facing a tough challenge against the Eagles this week. Gungahlin need to win with a bonus to make Royals job that bit harder against Vikings. It’s a fascinating final round with the winner of Royals and Tuggeranong claiming a spot in the major semi-final and potentially a week off before the Grand-Final. Rounding out the games is Wests v Owls, and though there’s nothing to play for necessarily, Uni-Norths will be hoping to build some momentum going into an elimination playoff against one of those top three.

FOUNDATIONS BEING RESURRECTED AT BROULEE RUGBY CLUB After a few years in hiatus, the Broulee Dolphins have entered a senior’s team back in to the South Coast Monaro - 2nd Division Competition. Despite having a strong squad of juniors at the club, senior players have been hard to come by. However, come 2019, word had spread that players were wanted for the club and a few dozen locals put their hand up. Some are new to the game, some are have come out of retirement, and some are just fresh out of school. A strong mix of youth, experience, inexperience and age. Senior Club President Ian Filmer said that he knew it was going to be hard to field a team all the time, but to those the boys that turn up, they are just there for a good time. “To be honest it’s been pretty difficult because of the results but the boys are enjoying it. We have a three-year plan where we hope to have more players involved because at the moment in seniors, we only have about 30 registered players,” Filmer said. “We have that plan in mind so this year we

4

knew it was going to be difficult. But it’s all positive. We just want everyone to have fun and not worry about the score or being at the bottom of the ladder or not winning. It’s not about that.” It seems that the laid-back coastal culture of just having a good time and not worrying about anything too seriously is what keeps the attitude of the players positive at trainings and come game day. “The attitude is positive though,” Filmer revealed. “At trainings the boys are just having fun, they are there for a good time. At this stage it is just a social competition for them, not competitive. Once we have more players then that will change, I’m sure.” But how hard has it been for the club to recruit? Extremely. Being not such a high population area and having the majority of the community full of families where the kids are the first priority it is hard to come by guys that want to play. “It was extremely hard to try and recruit guys from the local area,” he said. “We have those 30 registered players and the majority of them

are older blokes. We have about three or four guys that are 50 years old and even one bloke that is 57. Sometimes we can only field 13 players and then those guys all have to play a full game.” And when sometimes a team can only field 13 players it can be tough. Especially when long distance of travel is involved, other teams in the competition include the likes of Jindabyne, Yass, Braidwood and Bungendore. It’s a completely different set of circumstances when comparing to the competitions that there are in Canberra. Where for some teams, only a 10-minute drive down the road is all that is needed, whereas for the men from Broulee sometimes have to drive 3.5-4 hours for a match. Perhaps the travel is one of the major reasons why locals don’t want to play? They would rather spend time with their loved ones or friends for the day instead of being on the road all day, only to be dominated on the scoreboard.

don’t, they will go back to the drawing board, they won’t give up. “The travel each week is a major factor,” Filmer commented. “Having to travel to Jindabyne twice and then other places like Yass is difficult and then that’s what also could be the reason some guys don’t want to play. But credit to the boys, for the guys that turn up it makes their day, but it is difficult, especially when you cop a hiding each week. “It’s about adding more depth to the squad. We have a strong juniors club but once they turn 18, they either stop playing all together or move away for university or start working. So, when and if they do decide to come back to the area, we want them to have a club that they can be a part of and play some good footy.” Words: Rob Davison

Whatever it may be, the future is positive for rugby in Broulee and the south coast area. The club has a plan and if they can stick to that plan, they are hoping to be up there competing for the title each year. If they

BOARS RACK UP FIFTY-PLUS AGAINST RAMS The South Coast Monaro competition reaches Round 16 of regular season action this weekend with the Taralga Tigers aiming to continue their perfect 100% record when they travel to Crookwell to take on the Dogs in a repeat of the epic from Round 14. It was only a couple of weeks ago that a try nine minutes into stoppage time saw the Tigers squeak home against their perennial rivals and another enthralling match is in store. The Tigers juggernaut that, whilst slowed somewhat by their miracoulous escape against the Dogs a fortnight ago, still appears to be in tremendous shape with the team from Taralga, quite rightly, touted as massive favourites to bring home the crown. Taralga were handed a 20-0 forfeit victory by the Bungendore Mudchooks last weekend, the Mudchooks handing over the points having dropped out of the race for finals football with the top four now finalised, while the Dogs cruised to a bonus-point win over the Yass Rams in Yass. Mark Kennedy, William Croker and Samuel Elliott all dotted down twice for the Dogs in their 43-12 success. The Jindabyne Bushpigs, currently third on the table and could, potentially, go to

16

second if they were to gain victory away to the Batemans Bay Boars this weekend with the fixture at Hanging Rock Oval a potentially pivotal one in the final make-up of the topfour. The Bushpigs worked exceptionally hard to see off the Braidwood Redbacks in their last outing, winning 20-14 with Brendon Nikora and Matthew Caldwell amongst the tries. Batemans Bay Boars crossed for seven tries in their 47-0 away win over the winless Broulee Dolphins at Captain Oldrey Park in Round 15 with Cory Maddison (2) and Andrew Fleming getting on the scoresheet. James Thomas kicked half-a-dozen conversions from the tee as the Boars recoded a comfortable victory. Action in the latest round of South Coast Monaro competition starts at Braidwood on Friday night with their celebration fixture against the Bungendore Mudchooks kicking off at 7pm. In the other fixture scheduled for Saturday afternoon, the Rams are at home to the Dolphins.

KNOCK-OUT ACTION UNDERWAY IN WOMEN’S COMPETITION The pointy-end of the season is upon us in the Women’s competition as knockout action takes centre stage this weekend as the first of four weeks of finals football gets underway. Easts, who have earned the bye thanks to finishing top of the competition, will await the winner of the match between second and third, Uni-Norths Owls or Tuggeranong Viqueens, looking on with interest as the pair meet in their Qualification Final.

There is still much to play for at the foot of the ladder as well, as Canberra Royals face Wests to see who will move onto the next stage. Royals will be favourites to do so, Wests are yet to secure a point and have been heavily beaten in most of their matches so far in this campaign, but there could be a fairytale moment for the newcomers, who have a shot at progression. And, as we all know in sport, anything can happen.

Both enter the contest in exceptional form having come off wins in their last game, played in Round 10 last weekend. The Viqueens endured the harder of the fixtures, their 17-7 win over Canberra Royals including another try to Ema Masi, a win that cemented their place as the third best team in the division this season.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s Development League 10s, Round 11 saw wins for Gungahlin Eagles and ADFA. The Eagles were emphatic winners over the Uni-Norths Owls, claiming a 73-0 victory, whilst ADFA were 44-12 winners over Bungendore.

To progress to the final stages, the Viqueens will need to overcome an Owls side that crushed Wests 42-7 at Weetangera Oval. Anna Korovata, who enjoyed an excellent Buildcorp Super W season with the Brumbies Women’s team in 2019, claimed a brace of tries with Jane Garraway, Mesepa Salesa, Meilani Salale and Madeleine Googala also helping themselves to a five-pointer.

FINALS TIME IN THIRD GRADE COMPETITION It’s finals time in first division 1st grade and after the ups and downs of the regular season, it’s time to sort the contenders from the pretenders.

Final and the loser exiting the competition. The winner of Hall v Queanbeyan will play the Elimination semi-final while the loser will also pack away their boots for 2019.

In what is an altered postseason format for 2019, first placed Gungahlin Eagles take on Goulburn Dirty Reds at Nicholls, Royals play ADFA with fifth place Hall taking on Queanbeyan in the elimination games.

So, with the permutations sorted out, we can now look forward to these three fascinating games. Of course, to look forward, we must first scan back to round 14.

Eagles and Goulburn will have a couple bites of the cherry to make the grand-final, but there’s still plenty up for grabs today. The winner of this game will play in the major semi-final meaning they can’t be knocked out until the preliminary final stage. The loser of Eagles Goulburn will play in the elimination semi-final, meaning they don’t get that third bite at the cherry, so the result today is crucial for the weeks to come. Royals v ADFA could also prove crucial with the winner advancing to the Qualification

18

Goulburn’s loss to Queanbeyan was somewhat of a shock while the Gungahlin train just keeps trucking with the Eagles claiming a big win on the road to Royals. Hall were just too good for Cooma, winning 62-0 away from home while ADFA certainly made some noise with their 102-5 hiding of Easts. Outside of the finalists, Vikings finished off their campaign with a great win over Wests while Uni-Norths Owls came away with a hard-fought victory at RMC.
