PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW The Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup has already thrown up some outstanding quality in 2019 and we are only onto Round 3. The first two rounds have shown just how unpredictable the competition could be this season with surprise results, incredible comebacks, wonderful tries and exhilarating action par for the course and we are expecting more of the same today. There may be only two matches taking place at the top level, but both offer something for both the purist and causal rugby fan alike. Our Hahn SuperDry Match of the Round sees Easts tackle Royals in what promises to be an intriguing encounter with both teams eyeing a win. Easts were blown off the park by the early competition pace-setters the Gungahlin Eagles at Nicholls Enclosed last week, on the wrong end of a 74-5 hiding, and Head Coach Tim Cornforth will need to regroup his players ahead of the challenge of a Royals team that started the year in competent fashion, eclipsing the Queanbeyan Whites at David Campese Oval. Royals will enter the match as heavy favourites but will only need to glance back less than twelve

months for a reminder of how tough a trip to Griffith Oval can be. On that occasion, a Round 4 clash, Easts stunned the then Champions, with a 25-23 victory. That was founded on the back of a gritty defensive effort and some scintillating attack and they’ll look for more of the same today. Over at the Australian National University, the Uni-Norths Owls will play their inaugural home match of 2019 as they welcome Wests. The Owls were excellent in claiming a bonus-point win away to the Whites in Round 2, running in five tries in a 40-23 success. Joshua Reis led the way with a double whilst Philip Ferreira, Willoughby Axelson and Joshua Gray ensured the maximum point haul would head back across the border. There’re questions to be answered for their opponents Wests, namely which Wests will turn up? Will we see the team that savaged the Vikings for seventy minutes, or the team that collapsed in the final ten? Psychologically, what will coughing up a 47-19 lead to end with a draw do to the men from Jamison Oval? They have a chance to kick-on in this one, and a win here could well banish the memories of that fateful conclusion to Round 2.

EASTS FOCUS ON CONTINUAL GROWTH

Photo: Easts Facebook

The Eastern Suburbs Rugby Club enter their 81st year in the Griffin Legal John I Dent Cup with a clear goal in mind, continue to grow. Last season saw a great revival for the embattled club, getting their first win in 1,106 days in Round One, beating the then reigning Premiers Royals, but still falling short of a Finals appearance. Director of Rugby at the club Paul Angelatos says that the club has a hunger to go that one step further stating that the club is aware of their underdog status but uses it stoke their competitive fire. “Last year was a turning point for us. We had four wins, two draws and two games where we had the opportunity to win but couldn’t close it out,” Angelatos commented. “It was the difference between finishing second last and making the finals. So, we left last year, despite having a better year,

4

feeling there was unfinished business. We used that lack of going the step further into the finals as motivation." “Do we expect success? Internally we do. We expect more from ourselves then what people have predicted. We read the Stampede last week that predicted us and Wests to finish at the bottom of the ladder. We don’t like reading that stuff, we take that as motivation. We know there’s some very good sides in the competition, we came up against one last weekend in Gungahlin.” Easts first game of the season last week was a tough start for the club by any measure. The first-grade side was handed a 74-5 drubbing by the Gungahlin Eagles, who are having an impressive start to the season. In the lower grades and Colts, it was losses across the board for Easts. This result brings the club crashing back to earth following a positive preseason.

“The results at the weekend really shocked us, we don’t rest on our laurels with the work we did in the preseason,” Angelatos said. “We’ve had pretty good numbers to training throughout the preseason, we had two very competitive hit outs against Gungahlin and Vikings which showed we were moving in the right direction. So, the result on Saturday came as a shock to all of us, but it’s also a wakeup call.”

I first became involved in rugby about five years ago, Gungahlin were in a similar position to Easts, they had one or two wins for the season and they really turned it around. They’ve got a fantastic Old Boy fraternity that supports the club, they’ve got great sponsors and they’ve built a really good rugby program. That’s where we want to get to. Being very good on the field but also having a strong off field club as well.

Angelatos believes though that there are many lessons to learn from the Gungahlin setbacks, and not just from on field performances, with improvements to be made across the board. “We know they’re exceptionally strong and they showed that on the field, but also off the field,” Angelatos said. “They have done some tremendous things off the field over the last five years. FIFTY UP AGAIN FOR GOULBURN Goulburn racked up fifty points for the second week in a row as they romped to a 59-7 victory over the Tuggeranong Vikings in First Division First Grade action last Saturday. Having claimed a comprehensive win on the opening weekend, Goulburn were in great form again as Jordan Less went over for a hat-trick for the Dirty Reds. The Vikings had no answer to the power and pace of the hosts who laid down an early marker for supremacy of this grade. Canberra Royals will have plenty to say about that as they too went two from two with a 41-5 win over Cooma at Phillip Oval. The Royals scored seven tries to one in their bonus-point win with Chris Russell nabbing two of them. Matthew Ingall, Tyler Meredith-Brown, Luke Fisher and Jacob Sharp joined the party in a comprehensive home success. There was a hat-trick for Liam Elliot over at Nicholls Enclosed as the Gungahlin Eagles thrashed Easts 62-5 in a one-sided encounter. Matthew Power went over for two scores as the home team ran in ten tries, converting six of them, for a huge win that may kick-start their campaign.

James Erwin did the damage for the Owls on the scoreboard as he crossed for two tries, converted both, and kicked the match-winning penalty in a stunning display. Hall Bushrangers kept Wests scoreless at Jamison Oval in their Round 2 meeting, running away with the contest to win 24-0. They did enough to record a bonus-point as well, scoring four tries through Stuart White, Andrew McCoola, Josh Munro and Conor O’Donoghue, the latter converting two of them as Hall ground out the victory.

TIGERS CONTINUE RUN AS REDBACKS WIN

Crookwell Dogs’ miserable start to the 2019 season continued as they stumbled to a second defeat in succession, defeated by 12-9 in a tight and at tritonal contest against the Redbacks in Braidwood. In a game in which there was very little to choose between both sides, the Redbacks bounced back from an opening day loss to Taralga Tigers to eke out a narrow win.

penalties to finish with a personal points haul of 21, whilst Samuel Pye-Edwards went over for two tries for the defeated Rams. Yass will aim to bounce back when they welcome Bungendore in Round 3.

Jindabyne meanwhile continued their good start to 2019 by winning on the road for the second week running, the Bushpigs following up their opening round win over the Mudchooks by Harry Shoemark and Benjamin Howard recording a 28-12 win over a gritty Batemans claimed the tries for the home side, with Bay Boars at Hanging Rock. DIRTY REDS SHINING START TO SEASON

As the Goulburn Dirty Reds celebrated Ladies Day at Poidevin Oval last weekend their Women’s team were in pre-season action at the same venue off the back of a series of successful sevens and tens competitions. The Goulburn official club website recorded their participation in the ACT pre-season competition as the team notched up a comprehensive win and a narrow loss. First-up saw the Dirty Reds romp to a 34-0 win over Gungahlin Eagles with six tries scored in a comfortable success. Ash Mewburn (2), Karly Lachlan, Sass Cudaj, Chloe Waddell and Hollie Deaton all claimed five-points and with conversions by Mewburn and Waddell, the win was never in doubt. The second match of the day, against Easts, was a much tougher affair and Goulburn trailed by 15-0 with just a few minutes left in the match. But, showing that incredible never-say-die attitude and determination, they fought back into the match with quick tries to Chloe Waddell and Kelsey Betts, running out of time before they could sneak a draw from the clash.

In the Super W competition, the Brumbies run came to an end in the penultimate stage a couple of weeks ago as Queensland set up a Super W grand final rematch against NSW after a 39-10 knockout final win. The victory was hard earned though, with the Brumbies dominating the opening exchanges before their early efforts told in the final stages of the match as Queensland ran in three late tries. The Brumbies also had to deal with losing two of their best players, with gun forward Tayla Stanford stretchered off the field midway through the first half and captain Shellie Milward taken from the ground in the 71st minute following a shot from Ana Fotu that earned the Queensland forward a yellow card. After the home side led 12-0 early, the Brumbies fought back into the game as Biola Dawa crossed for her first Super W try on the cusp of half-time. That reduced the arrears to 12-7 at the break and gave the visitors hope of an upset, but the Queensland side ramped up the gears in the second half before running away with the clash late-on.
