Copying doesn’t pay Jasmine: Hi, how are you guys? Edward: Fine, how are you? Carla: Fine! Lucas: Not so well... Jasmine: Why? What happened? Lucas: Carla told the teacher that I copied in the Italian test and the teacher took the test and wrote two on the register. Jasmine: Why did you do that, Carla? Carla: Because it is not right to copy Lucas: So you’re telling me you’ve never cheated? Carla: I’ve always studied for my curiosity. Lucas: I don’t believe you!! Edward: Don’t you guys start fighting like kids. Lucas: Now I have a low mark in Italian, how can I fix this bad grade? Jasmine: Maybe Carla could help you study so that you can fix the problem. Edward: Yes! Come on, it’s also a way to apologize Jasmine: What do you think, Carla? Carla: All right, come on, I wanted to apologize, maybe I shouldn’t have ratted you out. Edward: How about you? Will you forgive Carla? Lucas: Yes, of course! I shouldn’t have copied anyway…. Jasmine: As you can see, if you talk and explain your positions, you can always find a solution. Edward: Remember this in life, always try to resolve conflict through mediation. This will make you better people and also better citizens.

Fighting for a girl On a spring day two young guys fall in love with the same girl, Alyson. When they discover it, they start a fight. Scott: How did you dare to send flowers to my Alyson! John: How long has she been your Alison? *Looking at him doubtful* Scott: *Giggle* How ridiculous you are! *and he begins to look at him up and down* John: I'm not ridiculous, I’m just telling the truth! Scott: The truth is she doesn't like you, she barely looks at you! They are about to start a fight with their hands but someone interrupts them. Alyson: Stop it! What are you fighting for? They look at each other for a minute *They blush* John: Nothing … Just boys things … Alyson: So what? John spits it out and tells her that both of them are in love with her. John: We are fighting for you but he is stupid! * and looks at Scott sideways* Scott: Look who's talking! Alyson: * Trying to reassure them* Stop, stop, stop guys there's no need to fight for something like that! John and Scott are not yet convinced but Scott proposes one thing: Scott: OK right, let's not fight. Let her decide! John: I agree. Alyson looks at them half angry and half doubtful and answers. Alyson: Are you guys insane? John: Go ahead, just tell us! Alyson: You’re very nice guys but I don't think it would work. I'm already busy with someone else *smiling* Alyson's boyfriend comes in and says hello to the guys and they leave for school. John: What a disappointment, I wanted to have a chance! Scott: Don't count on it! In the end fights can occur for nothing or for stupid things and can always be solved with mediation. Mediation is key to resolving conflicts in a positive way, which makes us better citizens!

Story of a mediation process The 4a is a class of a school in Venice and consists of 25 boys and 3 girls. Most of the class is lively, especially a small group of 4 people, students who failed and often target other classmates practicing real bullying. The teachers are not aware of this situation because the victims of these behaviours do not tell them what is happening. One day the girl who had to deal with these 4 guys was Isa. She was bullied because of her body. Isa is not very tall and is a bit chubby but her characteristic is her very strong personality. In fact the people who have offended her and targeted her have strengthened her personality. The conflict starts when Giulio looks at Isa while eating her third snack in 10 minutes. He laughs at her with his friends and a very heavy conflict starts: Giulio: Hey Isa, are you okay?

(Laughs) Isa: What are you looking at? Giulio: You never get tired of eating, don’t you? Isa: It’s not your problem, get lost. Marco: Don’t cry fat

(Laughs) Isa: Do you think you hurt me with your words? But even though she doesn’t show it, she feels pain. Giacomo: You want my snack, don’t you? Isa: Why don’t you grow up? Carlo: Come on, you are boring.. Marco:If you want, let’s eat something together. Isa: Shut your mouth please.. Elsa and Georgia, the two class representatives, enter the class and ask what’s happening. When they understand the situation, they call a class assembly, where they all sit in a circle and talk about what happened. Before the request of apology to Isa, Georgia makes a speech: “Similar behaviour is not acceptable because a conflict must always be civil and violence doesn’t solve anything, but does damage. It’s important to express one’s point of view without resorting to wickedness. This will make you better citizens.” Then she says to the boys: “Apologize to Isa! Similar episodes must no longer happen!

Group work issues The class B in the 4th year of the health and social care course at “Piero Sraffa" vocational school has to prepare a psychology test. The class is divided into 4 groups of 4 people . When working in groups it is important to collaborate and interact but there are two girls, Arianna and Gaia, who are discussing the work to be done because Arianna wants to put a detail in the work but Gaia does not. Gaia says that it is useless and she defines Arianna as a useless and superficial girl. Anyway Arianna does not want to give up inserting that detail in the work because she finds it important but after Gaia’s words they begin to discuss heatedly, entering into conflict. In the midst of the conflict, Mara intervenes and acts as a mediator. She tries to make both Arianna and Gaia reason by telling them both that in a conflict we must listen to each other, understand each other because each of us can have different ideas and thoughts. Mara tries to keep them quiet, speaking clearly, politely, without screaming and only in this way they could both understand. Gaia realizes she was wrong because it is right that Arianna can express herself without being judged and consequently apologizes to Arianna for the bad words used so they hug and Mara obtains satisfaction after making the two girls think about their behaviour. Thanks to Mara, Gaia and Arianna have learned how to resolve a conflict reflecting on their behaviour and finding some common ground. Mara is sure that in the future her mates will be good citizens because of the acquired mediation skills.

Hurting mates is bad During a gym class in the third year Bloom felt observed and on the other side of the room she noticed a group of girls making fun of her physical appearance, Emily was speaking ill of her and was urging the others to leave her alone. Bloom went home and cried, and the next day, she took courage , and went to Emily and said: B: I would like to talk to you! E: Tell me…. B: Please don’t put me down! E: Shut up! E: Look at her! E: Isn’t she strange? B: Think about your behaviour …. *Their classmates speak* C: Emily doesn’t deserve it B: Exactly *they say that all together* C: Be nice! E: Don’t look so sad! C: You’re just bad, Emily! B: You’re just hurting me, the night I don’t sleep ... - Bloom started to cry E: OK, sorry about that. They hugged, thanks to teamwork Emily and Bloom made up. E: I hadn’t realized I was hurting Emily. I was having fun...but it’s no fun humiliating others. I’ve learned a lesson. B: You know what I think? Both of us have learned something and in the future we’ll manage conflicts better. This will make us better citizens. E: Yes, sure!!

Cheating Mediator: Guys, what’s happening? What are you arguing about? Caroline: Edward cheated on me with another girl and he keeps insinuating that’s not true, but I'm sure about this. Edward: I am trying to show her that she thinks the wrong thing, because I was out with my childhood friend for a coffee. Mediator: If you tell me what happened we can search for a solution all together. Edward: It was Tuesday last week and I decided to drink a coffee with my childhood friend in the afternoon, without any purpose, but one of Caroline’s friends saw me and she told my girlfriend who misunderstood everything. Caroline: With another girl that she had never seen in her life. So I was worried because he hadn’t told me anything so I was suspicious that he had another affair. I was at home to study when one of my friends, Jennifer, called me and told me that she had seen Edward at the bar. Mediator: Okay I understand guys, all you need to do is simple, you need to communicate more and you need to be more sincere with each other. Edward: Okay I understand too, I’m sorry babe I’m gonna be more sincere next time! Caroline: Don’t worry teddy bear I’m sorry too I’m gonna trust you more. Mediator: If you learn to mediate, you will overcome misunderstandings and if necessary, solve future conflicts peacefully. This will make you better citizens.

At the funfair

One day Harry and Hannah, brother and sister, decided to spend the afternoon at the funfair after they had asked their parents. Once there, they began to explore the whole park trying all the rides and had a lot of fun. Late in the afternoon they arrived at the last carousel, where they began to discuss because only one of them could get on since there was only one seat available. So they began to push themselves and Hannah began to cry. Luckily, their cousin Arthur intervened, he too was there to have fun and he managed to divide them by telling them to wait for the next round so they could get on the carousel together. Brother and sister made peace and continued to spend the afternoon there without arguing. Learning to mediate conflicts and to find solutions that make all the parties involved happy makes us better people and better citizens.
