Bruni Glass Design Award 2019 Visions inside Glass Shapes by Bruni Glass, since 1997

Bruni Glass Design Award - XV Edition Since 1997, the Bruni Glass Design Award has challenged students from industrial design universities across the globe to create innovative glass shapes for a variety of market sectors. An intense journey that takes academic and hands-on learning to craft a professional future. Much more than a competition, our contest is a real Workshop - the first in Italy where students are followed step-by-step by experienced professionals.

Workshop Bruni Glass Design Award is the first eight-month university workshop that transforms the aspirations of young designers into a real job opportunity: a highly formative experience where Bruni Glass provide students access to their industry leading know-how about all types of glass containers. After months of studies and refinements, the drawings become real objects. And when a company decides to put a winning project into production, the result rewards both Bruni Glass and the students.

Success Stories The ultimate success for a young designer is to have its Bruni Glass Design Award transformed into a commercial reality. Below are a few of the many glass projects that have come to life.

SOMMELIER

AUDREY

Stefano Morazzoni Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Christine Kruse Münster School of Design, Germany

Unique and fascinating, the Sommelier is the bottle chosen by Bodega Lozano thanks to its elegant and sinuous shape that has thrilled winemakers all over Europe. A bottle well suited for all kind of products, from full-bodied to fresh and light wines.

From the Bruni Glass Design Award to the excitement of the wine makers. The elegant and stylish Audrey bottle, chosen by Cantina Pidrin company for its rosé wine, has thrilled with its delicate and feminine silhouette.

KOLO

DIAMANTE

Salla Seppälä Aalto University, Finland

Theresa Albert Münster School of Design, Germany

The company “Basso Fedele e Figli srl” was looking for a different shape for its new line of quality oils. The container is a concentrate of strengths, thanks to its round shape which is both beautiful and easily manufactured.

Ambrossia, the Spanish company, has chosen for its jam a high-end container that is able to convey the idea of luxury and refinement. This is the Diamante jar, one of the finalist projects of the XIII edition of the Bruni Glass Design Award.

HORUS By designing this wine bottle, I wanted to represent a consumer ideal which embodied both formal bearing and strong presence. I concluded that the Egyptian god Horus and the hawk - its animal equivalent - were representative of what I was looking for, so I developed a product with an innovative yet ethnic design thanks to a bulky chest made out by four front lines that are lost in the neck and two shoulders that give body to the bottle.

BARREL From the beginning, the barrel was the container chosen by the brewing masters. Today it is still the preferred storage format for craft beers since it’s the best way to identify a handmade beer in a supermarket shelf. Inspired by this consumer reality, I made a design that denotes its content.

FLEUR Fleur is inspired by a ‘Tulip Blossom’. Two different edges on the bottle indicates the different layers of floral leaf. The fragrant taste of wine perfectly matches with the smell of the flowers.

VOILE Voile is especially designed for fresh wines, that during a warm summer day go straight from the fridge to your table. Dimensions are combined in order to evoke a sort of “stream voile enfolding the bottle. The two volumes allow a comfortable handling of the bottle and the gentle asymmetry on top gives the design a feeling of verticality, lightness and dynamism.

LUPPOLO Hops are one of the primary flavor additives for beer, imparting bitter, sour, and citrusy notes to your favorite beverage. The namesake of Luppolo, the flower of the plant Humulus lupulu gives the bottle its distinctive leafy texture. As for the subtly tapered neck met by a spherical base, the same holds true. What better way to embrace the characteristics of craft beers than by taking inspiration from one of the ingredients that make them so unique?

CURIO Curio came to me through the motivation of nature. I designed it with 1% inspiration and 99% dedication. Many lines crossed my head and a pencil gave them this shape.

IGLU Although the bottle is clearly meant to resemble an igloo, I initially didn’t plan to create a bottle like that. I wanted a bottle that reflects lights in a cool way. The first idea came naturally, but left me skeptical so by changing the design ever so slightly to get something new I created ‘Iglu’. Since the shoulder of the bottle already looks like an igloo, I thought that, along with snow and ice, this was going to be the main design element.

KITE An austere, geometric bottle born from the deconstruction of a rectangle. A design that through sharp facets generates plays of light and shadows. The decision to design a “fantasy” finish with a 45° square section reflects the same desire to give the bottle rigor and elegance. Serious, precious and elegant: three values that are reflected in this proposal.

SPARROW A bottle for distillates whose shape is inspired by the old blown glass floats used by sailors to keep fishing nets afloat. The relief motif recalls exactly the intertwining of the nodes of the nets. This highly iconic bottle wants to evoke “pirate atmospheres and is perfect for amber spirits.

MONSIEUR This bottle was created to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity since its apparently modern shape brings inside nostalgic shades. Monsieur is indeed a bottle for the modern gentlemen. Its shape is a tribute to the vintage elegance with a new-fashioned touch: the traditional, strict, vertical lines flow along with the twisting point, making the bottle the perfect packaging to store and show off a unique and artisanal liqueur, such as a premium quality, botanicallyenriched gin. 20

ELENIE When I started the project, I had the idea of a sensual and fluent shape. I thought about Croatia and the amazing nature there, so harmonic and so complied. Designing the bottle, I realized that I was oriented on olives, so I started to create an olive oil bottle. The most important attribute was to make the final product tall and slim, without breaking the fluent shape of an olive. Elenie has an organic form and a light cutline representative of the content but in a sensual way.

KLEEN The impulse for the design and the protagonist of the story behind this project was the annoying oil drop that sometimes trickles down a bottle after using it. That makes the glass surface sticky and uncomfortable to touch. Kleen is function and character combined in an olive oil bottle. Primarily the shape of the container is simple but two dominant grooves on both its sides give it a characteristic appearance while the function of catching the oil drop leaves the main surface clean.

AMANDA Although the most rated characteristic of olive oil is its texture I was more interested into its unexpected behavior which is why I decided to let the bottleneck run asymmetrically over the body of the bottle. The neck can also serve as an indicator for the filling quantity to give this asymmetry a frame. The design of Amanda turns natural shapes into something functional, making the final product soothing and strong at the same time.

EVE I wanted to make a piece with a simple yet luxurious design without adding too many elements. Using the look of a traditional liquor glass combined with a tall bottle neck, I created a familiar and intriguing shape that combines two seemingly opposite design approaches and creates a high-class bottle. The shallow slopes of the sides draw up to emphasize the inverted curve shapes along the neck, adding a little interest to the eye, at the same time the heavy bottom gives the glass a strong touch making the project a perfect fit for any gourmet seasoning.

NEW OLD Born from the desire to combine two styles, New Old is a simultaneous contrast between classic and modern. The inspiration to the classic side comes from the ‘20s, the Chrysler Center in NY has been used as a reference to give shape to the shoulders of the bottle. While the curved yet soft and tense lines have been included as representation of modernity. Today, like yesterday, olive oil is an important element in our lives, and it needs a timeless bottle that enhances it.

PIERRE The idea of this design was born when I felt the need to recreate the stunning shapes that waves and currents give to sea rocks. From this thought I began to sketch my Pierre, focusing on harmonic proportions that nature generates itself and on transmitting the sensation of energy and constant movement.

SNAKE Snake is one of the most recurrent animals in symbolism of many cultures through time and history. Known for its dual meaning: life-death, shadowlight etc, it’s what represent at best the idea of a timeless product. A bottle that embodies simple and organic qualities as well as high-styled ones.

HULA-HOOP My source of inspiration was the forgotten sport hula hoop which usually leads to anger but also to a fun balance. If you bring emotions into harmony it can only result in joy and movement which was very important for my design. The final product is not boring but a constant surprise since the bottle doesn’t look the same in each perspective.

ELLEÍPÓ I decided to propose a bottle with a rounded shape because I see that there is not a lot of home fragrances like this in the market. My inspiration came from glasses and a plastic bottle of milk from the Korean brand “Binggrae”. I wanted to create a minimalist style for people with a clean design interior.

GLAZZ A bottle inspired by the growth pattern that nature has. I designed it thinking about the moment in which physics and mathematics team up to create incredible forms. Nature always maintains a proportion in its growth, and this is thanks to the spiral Phi, which is a number with surprising characteristics. In this bottle you can see a pattern of rotation and scale reduction in its growth.

CANYON I decided to split the bottle in two sides - one is rougher while the other one is very clean - with a fluid transition between them in order to make the whole design organic and interesting. I want the shape to have an organic feeling reminding of the American Grand Canyon, but at the same time to have its distinctive shape giving the observer the chance to make its own image association while looking at the bottle. Canyon merges perfectly into the room bringing a certain feeling of exclusivity and extravagance. 34

Bruni Glass Design Award rewards two projects that even though they have not been included among the finalists, have nevertheless been selected for the great freedom and creativity they express.

Lucas Gette Universidad Catรณlica de Santa Fe

T-REX The inspiration for this project was born from my love for head-designed bottle and the Jurassic Park movie. During my whole childhood the idea of the existence of this ancient creature scared me, growing up this feeling turned into a sort of amazement, a fascination. I decided to convey these emotions into my project which, despite being a challenge for its shape complexity, has turned out as one of the most fun to design.
