Featured Collections & Estates Property from the Collection of Dudley and Constance Godfrey

Important Private Virginia Estate

We are very pleased to again represent the late Constance and Dudley Godfrey, famously astute and acquisitive collectors of early British slip decorated and tin glazed ceramics, as well as early American furniture. Featured are more than 40 objects from this noteworthy collection.

The collector of this impressive group of objects was known for his sharp and discerning eye for American decorative arts, particularly Philadelphia and Virginia objects. Lots 1132 through 1151 in the sale include important objects, many with impressive provenance through family descent and New York auctions.

The Laura Davidson Sears Gallery of Fine Art, Elgin Academy

Property from Dean Hall Plantation, South Carolina

Selected works from the Academy’s art collection on offer include Jane Stuart’s full length portrait of George Washington, the Anna Hyatt Huntington aluminum sculpture Two Fawns Playing, Ariadne by Ferdinando Vichi, and Venice by F. Hopkinson Smith, among others.

This noted collector is downsizing and his impressive coastal plantation is being sold. With a focus on Southern rarities, the high quality furniture, silver, and textiles offered here were sourced from top dealers and auctions over the course of two decades.

Property from the John B. Schorsch Collection

Estate of Barbara F. Chatham

Featured here from the noted collection of John B. Schorsch are a group of important American folk portraits, including a rare group of family portraits attributed to Sheldon Peck, and an exceptional full length portrait of a young girl.

An institution in her North Carolina home, Barbara Chatham was beloved by all and led a remarkably active and philanthropic life. Collected by several generations of the Hanes and Chatham families, the objects offered here reflect their North Carolina roots.

An Important Southern Institution

South Carolina Collection

The Museum strives to educate Charleston area residents and visitors about the natural and cultural history of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Offered in this auction to support that mission are a number of fine objects, including an rare WIlliam Little North Carolina sideboard.

This focused collecting couple is downsizing, and finally parting with their lifetime collection of Southern leather key baskets. Each has been researched, documented, conserved, and loved. The imposing and record setting Swisegood corner cupboard that held the collection is also being offered here.

Estate of Dr. J. Francis and Laquita Amos, Rocky Mount, Virginia

Private Family Collection

Dr. Amos assembled artifacts that spanned the entirety of Modern History. These included coins, tools, and similar objects that could be found on European turf or New World soil. He also enjoyed being considered the de facto historian for his town and surrounding region.

Originally purchased to furnish their various family homes, many of the fine carpets, lighting, furniture, and objects offered here have been in storage for many years. Collected over the course of decades starting in the 1980s, the family patronized top New York dealers and auction houses.

Estate of Steven Murphy, Fort Collins, Colorado

Important Collection from a Southern Gentleman

American furniture with superb provenance including a group of Philadelphia chairs attributed to Daniel Trotter, a New York drop leaf table with a fine old surface, and a tassel carved New York chair related to an important set of chairs from the Van Rensselaer Family.

Featuring sophisticated English and Continental furniture and decorative objects, including a fine Franco-Flemish Verdure tapestry and a Regency Brazilian rosewood drum table.
