Pedr’alta Waterfront Viana do Castelo, Portugal 2007
In a Coast line where dune hills are the boundary between nature and buildings, a small agglomerate of uncharacteristic fisherman warehouses disrupt this line. In order to minimise this incident, the new building, that replace this warehouses, blend with the surroundings. It carves itself in the dunes like an ancient ruin that it’s being moulded by the power of the elements. This new building creates a platform that resembles an ancient seawall. The volume splits into two separating it selves in opposite directions, creating fissures between them that spread through the dunes. This fissures created pathways connecting both sides of the dune as well the top of the two volumes. This paths converge all to the same space, a plaza that led to a space between the two volumes. One volume would receive de fisherman warehouses as well as other spaces related to fishing. The main façade of the volume, contains the access to the main storehouses. This compartments have a section that resembles the ancient fisherman storehouses. The other volume would contain all cultural and service spaces. It’s carved with grand openings in the façade and in the interior, which invites people enter the inner space. It also allow a wide view over the ocean, framed by the openings.

Pools of Concrete Coimbra, Portugal 2008
The site plan is located in the southern side of Coimbra, on the north bank of the Mondego River, placed between the Pole II of Coimbra University and the Monastery of St. George of Milreu. It’s a particular place where nature still empires, untouched my man. It is characterized by being a unique place where nature, green, serenity and tranquility reigns, opposed to the confusion, chaos and stress of the urban metropolis of Coimbra. The opposite bank is also characterized by the predominance of green where the only element that stands out is the Monastery. The proposed project is the result of the intention to make the most of the river and the opposite bank, masking up and clinging to the site in order to be part of it. Therefore the building extends along the bank, bending and twisting, acquiring the margin setting but shaping and redrawing that line, twisting into the terrain to create a calm zone to which the building turns to. Its faceted and irregular form is originated as much as the delineation of the border but also the curvilinear forms of natural elements that prevail at the site. One of the ends of the volume acquires the original line of the border, while the other projects towards the river directed to the Monastery. From this element progresses the bridge which connects the two sides of the river and ties the building to the opposite bank. The bridge begins from of a massive element that belongs to the building, and unfolds itself in a subtle way when touching the other bank, like a sculptural form. From the main volume extends another volume into the land, like a tree root that spreads to attach a tree to the ground, basing the building to the landmass. This element narrows along its extents, eventually finishing into wall, breaking the
visual relationship of people with the river, and also lead them into the building and the bridge. So people are channeled through this route which spreads at certain point, creating a square and a recess in the building in which the entry is created. By an offshoot of a wall arises the entrance to the building which invites people to enter. There is also another opening in this plaza, which allows a glimpse of the inside of the pools and the river, captivating passers-by to enter the building. After, the route leads people to the bridge which is accessed by a narrow opening, at the threshold that opening enlarges exposing the river. At the bridge the other side and let people glimpse de new building interior. The building to be glimpsed in its entirety , always a high place regarding this , let me see your tensioned and sensual way, captivating and enticing people to know it and use it .

Arregaça Centre Elderly care centre and Kindergarten Coimbra, Portugal, 2009
The local has several characteristics that make it a unique place and on which the building site to deploy. The site is an urban void which identifies itself as an extension of the green belt that stretches along the river Mondego, and extends into the interior. This vegetation ‘peninsula’ is most of its perimeter confined, this limit being sometimes interrupted in some parts. This space is pierced throughout its length by a water line which divides the plot into two parts. The South side is bounded by a road and an agglomerate of uninterrupted houses that came through the street, is a very rugged place. The North side of the water line is characterized by having a little steep topography and some ruins and walls demarcating the land at this location. As both programs require similar needs, the two programs were merged in one building, which enables a relationship between the elderly and children, and the union of the services which they bring about. Both programs require a good exposure. Thus the most salubrious location would be north with the building facing south. Another aspect that led to the location of the building at the northern end of the site was to be a place with easy access. The location of the building also sought to redraw the boundary of the lot, taking the orientation of the existing wall and twisting in order to monitor the orientation of the existing ruins. The fact that the building spread along the ground intends to not interrupt the green space that exists there, which can be read as an extension of the Green Park. The built consists of a succession of packages coupled to a route. It’s seen like a volume set, which has a relationship with the built featuring at the southern end of the lot, consisting of low small houses.
The programs in the entire building is connected with the central axis to which all converge. So from one central element it’s located the building entrance, followed by a common area, where are the areas common to both programs, and from which it derives either Household / Day Centre or to the kindergarten. The modules of older homes are located farther away from the central location, having an exclusive relationship with elderly spaced.

Animal Centre Aveiro, Portugal 2010
Due to the need for an animal center in the council, the building was created to fulfil that need, but also developed in order to be possible in future to change the function of the building for cultural nature. The concept of work was to create a building that is more than a “deposit� of abandoned animals, combining care for the practice and teaching. Is also to design a space that is seen as a public park. The building is dug into the hillside and is accessed - over, because the intention is to use the maximum possible spaces, i.e., the building can be enjoyed from the indoor and outdoor spaces in both quotas of the building. And thus the users have a different contact in relation to the building and animals. The volume stands out in the field with different lengths depending on the program and function, thereby creating greater dynamism and depending on the programs within the building, the correspondent covers differ in heights and gain expressions, creating diverge spaces to people use. For this building is more than a place for abandoned animals, which were created activities that lead to the population and to bring the people here. For it is proposed a multipurpose room to receive families and even classes where they teach how to deal with animals , dealing with the different personalities of them, where you learn what to do when adopting an animal or even what to do when encountering an animal in service ( e.g. a guide dog ). It is also proposed
that there is here a center for training and learning for the animals, not only for those who are in this equipment but also for the general population, causing the animals to become more obedient and sociable, and those who are adoption to be more calm and balanced, thus facilitating its adoption. Another important -spectrum you want to join the local population is the center of well -being at home, i.e., an equipped van that provides treatments to animals, such as bathing and grooming. The material selected for the structure is reinforced concrete due to its resistance. The exterior walls are structural. The interior walls are painted plywood, in order to be dismantled if needed, with the exception of wetlands are covered with ceramic tiles. The floor screed is stroked in all areas because what is sought is a continuous reading. Ceilings are plasterboard to allow passage of infrastructure therein, and in the passageways and tidy is in apparent concrete.

The new building proposed in this context assumed as a part edging, with its functional versatility public and symbolic presence. This is to accommodate the new health centre, a social centre, a theatre and exhibitions. Demand that the intervention is characterized by an approach based on four key topics: 1 The tradition of constructive haystacks. 2 The pedagogy of construction on the dune. 3 The building, landscape, visual access route to the sea. 4 The rural land structure as morphological matrix. The Costa Nova’s original type of construction and urbanity is one of the main assumptions of the conceptual protect, which seeks to reinterpret an approach either contemporary public nature and symbolic. Accordingly It is proposed that the whole construction is made of wood, resting on a network half burned foundation of reinforced concrete, In order to allow the building to stabilize on The dune, as the construction of the original barns.

Lifrary = Library + Life The new Central Lifrary is not just a Library. It’s a House for the Finnish Culture.It will be part of finnish contemporary lifestyle. It’s democratic space will accept everyone, independently of their age and gender. Every visitor will play an important role, a Culture producer. The new building will be Urban and Nature integrated, built ecologically and feasible, conveying to the users these sustainable concerns. This Lifrary will feed enterprising and avant-garde finnish spirit, well-known around the World as basis of a scandinavian character. Our solution is a simple extruded volume from the plot limits, until 25,0m, lifted from the ground to allow public space to connect inside and outside.Simultaneously, we create generous outdoor covered spaces, which allow the extension of informal library activities onto the street, such as book fairs, sports, concerts, ice skiing, etc, as an attraction for the younger generations to the library.The large inside void will be the heart of the library, connecting all the floors and the rooftop, where a park extension is waiting for visitors to enjoy the view to the city and the park, while reading a book or just relaxing. The building’s volumetric and static outer image opposes to the freedom, flexibility and fluidity through the inner space, creating a surprising effect and providing a comfortable environment for long permanence. The exterior façade will be
a determining feature of the building architectural character as well as a symbol of the building ecological concern. It will be a double glazed folded skin composed by both photovoltaic panels facing south, for energy gains, and clear glass facing north, for adequate reading light, transparency and views to the park. The inner dominant void, will be a free and fluid space, opposite to the rigid fixed outside boundary, thought as a poetic ressonance of the finnish landscape, its jagged forests and lakes.We want this void to be the library’s maximum expression: a free and intelligent expressive space, dynamic and challenging, flexible thus rigorous.These are in our view, a set of valid conceptual topics to ground a long evolving process of development of a Library for the Future in the heart of Helsinki.
