The legend Legend has it that Lisboa was founded by Ulysses. The name comes from “Olissipo”, which has its origins in the Phoenician words “Allis Ubbo”, meaning “enchanting port”.
The birth Most likely it was founded by the Phoenicians and styled by the Moores which shows in the strong Arabic influences. It was, after all, ruled by the Moors for 450 years. In the 12th century the Christians re conquered the city but it was not until the mid 13th century that Lisboa became the country’s capital. With the beginning of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries, Lisboa enriched as a spice and jewellery trade centre. The breakthrough for Portuguese expansion came in 1498 when Vasco da Gama discovered the sea route to India. This was indeed the beginning of a golden age, characterised by the Manueline architectural style named after King Manuel I, with its typical decorative use of maritime motifs. Over the centuries Lisboa naturally grew and changed. When the city centre was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, it was rebuilt by Marquise de Pombal, who thus created the Baixa Pombalina, a commercial area that still retains much of its original lay out. Lisboa is a historic capital, a potpourri of unusual character and charm, where 800 years of cultural influences mingle with modern trends and life styles creating spectacular contrasts.

If you would like to get to know Lisboa’s hidden secrets, without the slog of climbing its seven hills on foot, then take a ride on the no. 28 tram. This is the ideal way of discovering some of Lisboa’s most interesting historical sites. Starting from Martim Moniz, the no.28 heads in the direction of the Graça neighbourhood, past São Vincente de Fora Church which is worth a visit due to its imposing tiled facade. Behind the Church is Campo de Santa Clara, where the “Feira da Ladra” market is held every Tuesday and Saturday and you can buy and sell everything.
As you go down past the busy Rua da Conceição, its worth getting off in the heart of this Pombaline downtown area, commissioned by the Marquis of Pombal, following the 1755 earthquake. The tram now starts to climb again along the elegant Chiado hillside, stopping almost in front of the famous cafe A Brasileira; in Largo do Chiado, where the statue of Fernando awaits your company. Along this ride, it’s worth noting the architecture of the buildings whose facade are adorned to the rooftops with tiles, often Art Nouveau. The main highlight on the way to the Estrela is the Parliament building, house in the former Sao Bento Convent, at the top of an imposing staircase. So now, you know why this tram is known as the “tourists’tram”.
The tram continues through Alfama, passing by some of medieval Lisboa’s most picturesque streets and squares such as Rua das Escolas Gerais and Largo das Portas do Sol. The latter is a beautiful belvedere overlooking the river with Sao Jorge’s Castle above. Descending towards the downtown

Elevador Santa Justa Elevador de Santa Justa was inagurated on 10 July 1902 and it is the only vertical lift in Lisbon for public service. It was built by the architect Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, with a cast iron structure, enriched with filigrana details. In 2002 it was classified as National Monument.

Ascensor da Glória Inaugurated on 24 October 1885, this elevator was the second to be placed in Lisbon. It is the most visited elevator in the city. On 2002 it was classified as N ational Monument.

Museu do Fado Since opening to the public in 1998, the Museum has incorporated items belonging to hundreds of interpreters, authors, composers, musicians, instrument manufacturers, scholars and researchers, professional and amateur artists: hundreds of personalities that witnessed and wrote the history of Fado, and that did not hesitate to cede the testimonial of their affective and memorial patrimony to us, for the construction of a collective project. Museu do Fado pays tribute to all of them, investigating, maintaining and promoting the singularities of this performing art, born in Lisbon’s historic neighbourhoods. Throughout its approximate 200 years of history, fado was able to absorb several cultural and technological influences, tracing a consecration path in the most distinct areas, and perpetuated during nearly the entire 20th century, in the exact proportion of its popular celebration.
