BILL KOHN: A LONG FRIENDSHIP Essay by Peter Marcus 2
I clearly remember the first day that I met Bill Kohn. It was August 1967 and I had just arrived in St. Louis to teach printmaking at Washington University. I had just finished my first day of teaching, and I was getting into my car to go home when Bill walked up to me, introduced himself, and invited me to dinner the following evening. He had recently returned from a trip to India on a Fulbright Scholarship and he wanted to show me his work based on his trip. We ate extremely spicy and hot Indian food fixed by his wife Pat. After a wonderful evening of delicious food and a lot of talk about art, we became great friends. I was very impressed with the work that Bill showed me that night. It was work on both paper and canvas. He was relying a lot on glorious photo silk screen images of India in much of the work. Bill and I saw each other nearly every day for many years. He, Gene Hoefel, also a professor at the Art School, and I began going to the gym at Washington U in order to keep our old bones in some semblance of good shape. Seeing Bill nearly daily enabled me to get to know him extremely well. I can think of no topic that wasn’t discussed at some point, including art, the Art School, politics - both national and very local. I am pretty sure we also shared a lot of unsubstantiated gossip. After our workouts, we sometimes went home, but often we met at Layton’s, a restaurant and bar on Clayton Road, for beer and hot hors d’oeuvres. A fitting reward for our efforts at the gym, we told ourselves. This went on for about 30 years, and it was wonderful. Until Bill was diagnosed with cancer. We kept on going to the gym, and drinking beer together, however, because Bill always wanted to have a good time. Of course, near the end, he could no longer go to the gym with us. Our routine had changed, and even Layton’s closed. Too much changed. But mostly I miss Bill so much.
― Peter Marcus Peter Marcus is an artist. His work was recently on view at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. He is currently having a one-person exhibition at the Molloy College Art Gallery, New York. His next exhibition is scheduled with the Bruno David Gallery In March 2007. 3
Afterword by Bruno L. David 4
I am pleased to exhibit a memorial exhibit titled “Journey” by Bill Kohn at the Bruno David Gallery. Support for the creation of significant works of art has been the core to the mission and program of the Bruno David Gallery since its founding. Bill Kohn’s remarkable and compelling career makes him one the most impressive artist of the gallery. Bill Kohn traveled the world, sharing his vision of many significant places in paintings celebrated for their vibrant color and dizzying perspectives. Machu Picchu in Peru, the Duomo in Florence, the bridges of Paris, the Grand Canyon, Khajuraho, and Jaiselmer in India were favorite sites. In his final body of work, which began in 2002 and continued until his death in November 2004, Bill Kohn returned his focus to St. Louis, painting the landscape of historic and modern buildings around Grand Boulevard in the Grand Center arts district of St. Louis. A selection of this work was exhibited in 2006 at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. In conjunction with the exhibition, a multi-media piece Grand Eloquence inaugurates the Journey’s exhibit in the tradition of earlier Bill Kohn openings. Kohn’s long-time collaborators and friends Rich O’Donnell, Anna Lum and Dale Dufer have created an homage to the late artist. Grand Eloquence, originally conceived while Mr. Kohn was alive, combines theatrical lighting with projections of photographs, digitally modified images and video, produced and developed by photographer Dale Dufer. Poet Anna Lum has written and will perform a special vocal text to be integrated with composer Rich O’Donnell’s music. Pat Kohn, wife of the late painter, is guiding this creative collaboration, assisted by Mr. Kohn’s friend Jean Ponzi. The visual work created during his lifetime was only a part of Bill Kohn’s contribution to the cultural wealth of St. Louis. During a 34-year teaching career at Washington University School of Art, he guided the creative and skill development of thousands of students. He also encouraged countless other individuals in the visual arts, music, writing and theater by enthusiastically attending exhibits and performances of all types. The two Grand Eloquence performances are supported by a grant from the Regional Arts Commission to New Music Circle and a consortium of partners including the Washington University in St. Louis School of Music and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts; Bruno David Gallery, and a grant from I.B.M. Bill…We all miss you. Bruno L. David Director 5
