A CONVERSATION WITH RICH O’DONNELL Saint Louis, 2003 2
“Well, it all started going to the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts and seeing ‘Joe,’ the Serra sculpture, the museum itself, but particularly the ‘Joe’ sculpture, and it was late in the day so the shadow on the sculpture was very long, and it made a marvelous shape on the wall of the museum and interesting and changing surfaces -- light and shadow -- and behind it all is the incredible Masonic Temple. The shadows got it started. As I look at the Masonic and beyond, around ‘Joe’ and the Pulitzer. I began to see so many marvelous subjects, so that whenever the weather was good, I would come back there with my watercolors and walking and bicycling around Grand Center until I found positions you might not ordinarily see. At this point I have 19 watercolors, 19 potential themes for paintings to be enlarged. I’ve always taken photographs from the position that I’ve done watercolors so now I transfer the photographs directly to the computer and use the photographic material and the watercolors to sketch for paintings. For the first time I have many color possibilities that I never had before so it’s opened up a whole world and it’s very exciting. I look forward to next summer when I can get out and find wholly new places.”

POEM BY ANNA LUM Saint Louis, 2006 This poem was part of a performance titled Grand Eloquence, performed at Bruno David Gallery on November 17, 2006. Grand Eloquence combined projections of photograph, digitally modified images created by Bill Kohn, and video, produced and developed by Dale Dufer. Poet Anna Lum has written and performs a vocal text to be integrated with composer Rich O’Donnell’s music. Joshua Kohn, completed the performance with an original piece on guitar. Pat kohn has guided this creative collaboration, assisted by Jean Ponzi.

He danced the line between sun and shade mindless of the danger at the edge where sun falls 93 million miles and escapes Kohn’s brush Caught now by his breath Too light for our bodies Still we dance Shall we dance for the line unfolding the flat two dimensions billowing into three Shall we dance for a life rambunctious colors and borders not binding always drawing us, together in the fourth dimension We won’t dance in chaos and incoherent Bill’s billion exhalations grand, remain more than enough to light the center.

AFTERWORD BY BRUNO L. DAVID

I am pleased to present a series of works on paper titled Grand Center Series by the late Bill Kohn. In his final body of work, which began in 2002 and continued until his death in November 2004, Kohn returned his focus to Saint Louis, Missouri, painting the landscape of historic and modern buildings around Grand Boulevard in the Grand Center arts district of St. Louis. Kohn created these pieces while working on several large-scale paintings for the 2006 exhibition Centering on the Grand at the Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis (CAM). Kohn stated in 2004 that, “Grand Center as a landscape embodies forces of creativity, decay, restoration, preservation, learning and innovation, interacting over time in the heart of a metropolitan region, whose rich character is often overlooked by its own residents, which demonstrates his interest in bringing to light the culture and history of the city of St. Louis through his work. Bill Kohn traveled the world, sharing his vision of many significant places through paintings that were celebrated for their vibrant color and dizzying perspectives. Machu Picchu in Peru, the Duomo in Florence, the bridges of Paris, the Grand Canyon, Khajuraho, and Jaiselmer in India were his favorite sites. Bill Kohn was born and worked in Saint Louis, Missouri. Kohn exhibited at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, Casa de la Cultura in Oaxaca, Mexico, Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis (CAM), Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts in Racine, WI, Saint Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis, IN, Casa de Cultura in Guadalajara, Mexico, Krannert Museum in Champaign, IL, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO, San Francisco Museum in San Francisco, Los Angeles Museum in Los Angeles, and Oakland Museum in Oakland, CA. The Bruno David Gallery represents the Estate of Bill Kohn. Support for the creation of significant new works of art has been the core to the mission and program of the Bruno David Gallery since its founding in 2005. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Pat Kohn for her endless support. I am deeply grateful to Yoko Kiyoi and Emily Thompson, who gave much time, talent, and expertise to the production of this catalogue. Invaluable gallery staff support for the exhibition was provided by Rachael Schomburg, Emily Thompson, Malahat Qureshi, Kara Gordon, and Martin Lang.
