CHRIS KAHLER: OF LUMINESCENCES BY BUZZ SPECTOR Afterword BY BRUNO L. DAVID CHECKLIST AND IMAGES OF THE EXHIBITION BIOGRAPHY

CHRIS KAHLER: OF LUMINESCENCES BY BUZZ SPECTOR Chris Kahler’s paintings and aqueous medium drawings are, collectively, intensely hued rapture. The artist describes his endeavor as one of relating biomorphic forms to the ephemeral, but shape does not constitute time. What he means, I think, is a matter of reverie more than form, of associations that come and go while contemplating artworks in which the accidental, the chemical, and the phenomenal, seem to occlude such acculturated references as taxonomy, inscription, or mapping. Putting such constructs into the shadows, though, is not to eliminate them entirely from mind. The rhapsodic play of color and viscous traces in Kahler’s work are a result of its working conditions as well as the sum of its effects. These works are painted flat; that is, on table or floor, and this orientation is critical. We know the map is not the territory, but every map brings us to its spatiality from above. In this art understanding its orientation is a means to recognize the movement of the eye as a disembodied form of wandering through its chromatic territory. Piet Mondrian was insistent that the vertical and horizontal lines in his mature work were not a response to the artificiality of a Dutch landscape at least partially reclaimed from the sea. Similarly, Kahler insists that paint, not landscape, is the subject of his work, but he acknowledges that his frequent drives through central Illinois farmland (he lives in Champaign, IL, but teaches at Eastern Illinois University, 45 miles due south) give him time to meditate on visual incidents across some of the Midwest’s flattest terrain. Mondrian employed straight lines to generate visual tension, but this in itself does not explain the lush accumulation of paint on his surfaces. For Kahler, the fluidity of his pigment application suggests an artist unconcerned with gridding, but his almost every work is suffused with an understructure of parallel or crossing catenary lines, maplike, but without locations. The most ambitious physical traversal in this exhibit is Bioluma, 2015, a 5 x 20 foot acrylic and mixed media work on Mylar. The panoramic scale of the work proposes that we regard it from some distance, but its roiling vortices of color and gesture do more to draw us near than its sheer size does to push us back. Bioluma is a procession of effects; glowing color incidents seemingly strung together by dashes and swirls, initially evoking synaesthetic cursive handwriting, but coalescing in mind more like colorful floats in a resplendent parade.

2

The title Kahler has applied to the works in this exhibit, Biolumens, is a neologism; that is, a new or rather, invented word formed through the conjunction of parts of more familiar words. “Lumens,” in optic science, are units of luminous flux, equivalent to candle power, but Kahler’s reference is better understood as a contraction from “luminescence,” of light as emission. The artist doesn’t paint with true phosphors, but the glow-in-the-dark brightness of his colors is responsive to gallery lighting conditions and even more so to direct sunlight. This vividness may reflect Kahler’s study with Ed Paschke and William Conger, eminent painters with bright and acidic palettes of their own, in graduate school at Northwestern University in the mid-1990s. The “Bio-” reference, evoking the ecologies of regions, is also a pragmatic way for Kahler to distinguish this selection of all works on paper from the earlier paintings on canvas that he exhibited under the heading, Dialumens. So, “lumens” unifies this suite of works with its predecessor, but I want to offer a further reflection on Kahler’s prior choice of the prefix, “Dia-.” I construe it as a contraction from “dialectic,” the Hegelian term for the opposition, in language, between thesis and antithesis, reconciled at a higher level of truth by a third proposition, the synthesis. This metaphysical invocation is the way Kahler invites us to comprehend a destination for our wandering eyes. As T.S. Eliot phrases it, “We shall not cease from exploration / and the end of all our exploring /will be to arrive where we started / and know the place for the first time.”

Buzz Spector is an artist, critic, and professor of art in the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. This text is one in a series of the gallery’s exhibitions written by fellow gallery artists and friends.

AFTERWORD BY BRUNO L. DAVID 4

I am pleased to present a new exhibition titled “On Paper” by Chris Kahler. This show marks Kahler’s seventh solo exhibition with the gallery. “On Paper” offers a unique body of work emerging from a three-year exploration of drawing, systematic drafting, and watercolor techniques. Kahler’s exploration of negative space, light, and intersecting planes has resulted in arresting juxtapositions of biomorphic and ephemeral forms. As with “Disequencing”, Kahler’s 2013 exhibition of paintings at Bruno David Gallery, these drawings explore the “boundaries between physical and psychological time, between phenomena and the variable conceptual filters for understanding them.” Chris Kahler is a Professor of Painting and Drawing at Eastern Illinois University. He received his B.F.A. at Ohio Wesleyan University and M.F.A. from Northwestern University, Chicago, IL. Kahler has been the subject of numerous one-person exhibitions at venues including the Richard Ross Art Museum, Delaware, OH (2014); Anita Wooten Gallery, Valencia College, Orlando, FL (2011); John P. Weatherhead Gallery, University of Saint Francis, Fort Wayne, IN (2009); Museum of Surgical Science, Chicago, IL (2002). Support for the creation of significant new works of art has been the core to the mission and program of the Bruno David Gallery since 2005. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Buzz Spector for his thoughtful essay. I am deeply grateful to Eileen Milford and Laine Johnson, who gave much time, talent, and expertise to the production of this catalogue. Invaluable gallery staff support for the exhibition was provided by Keri Robertson, Cleo Azariadis, Eileen Milford, Daniel Stumeier.
