ON THE RUINS OF THE ROAD SHOW by Greg Ott

For her “Workplace Series” Cindy Tower painted en plein air American industrial ruins, complicated sites not only for the challenges of the physical landscape, but also for the challenges of the psychical one. In place of the empirical evidence of the industrial narrative told by the industrymen of yesteryear, the collective consciousness of this century steeps the site of ruin in the post-industrial imaginary. The circumstances of the ruined site – whether a packing plant or a lead mine – are illegible, and efforts to reconstruct a mythic American ruin can reinforce precarious binaries, as a landscape that is either destroyed or redeemed, dead or alive. On first impression, Tower works in such a way on these complicated sites. In Passage the threshold of built and natural environments obfuscates in an ecological alloy. A steel coil iterates the spiral of a snail shell inching toward the summer thicket; exposed vents and pipes on the factory floor befit burrows and holes for rabbits or snakes, the latter of which transform from cables that wend and descend. A natural reclamation portends, and the impact of Passage seems redemptive for, or restorative to the complex historical landscape, as though an organic nature redeems the industrial narrative, as though industry failure contributes to a healthy ecology. Yet the romantic ruination of Passage is distinct from other paintings in this series. Most canvases stretch beyond human dimensions and extend us into the depth of the painting, accessible and inaccessible at once. We mark entry and egress, safety and danger. And, with enough attention, we note that the borders of some paintings in the series reiterate the industrial peripheral. Tower fuses dimensions across canvases to refigure orientation out of disorientation. She selects and scavenges what is valuable, renders it in a place, and directs our visual progress in these purgatorial paintings as we ascend and descend through structural steelwork and broken floorboards. Most often she leaves us to negotiate the foreground where we remain fatefully lodged in the mythic site of incomprehension, instability, and impermanence.

Following her “Workplace Series,” Cindy Tower painted what seems a discrete site, Idaho lava fields that divide by 1500 miles ecoand geo-morphic circumstances. Yet the invariable clutter of the foreground, the oil drums and tangled steelwork of the “Workplace Series,” correlates with the pumice stone and scrub and compounds in depositions of the end, in eschatological evidence that marks its own discontinuous history. Broken floorboards and steep cinder cones, alike, reiterate the impasse wherein the seismic events of each place, the closures and ruptures, suspend the transition between dead and alive. In these liminal places, Tower resides to work beyond the government of the site to situate an ecological present, which reflects on the ethic of impermanence and her responsibility as an artist and as a person. While she could have chosen easier histories and environments to enter, industrial ruins permit her to grapple with industry failure and fault. That which impels Tower to these sites draws us to the same confessional space, in which ecologies of absence are installed within ecologies of abundance. Tower’s Idaho paintings work in apposition as acts of contrition, parabolic tests in the wilderness of Craters of the Moon. These two Cindy Tower series render the liminal states of transitional sites and replicate her own psychical space as an artist-in-transition—aesthetic, spiritual, or otherwise. Her site-specific paintings converge on the transition itself rather than on the states between which it is taking place and dry beneath the tension of the complex space and time of the ruin landscape.

I am pleased to present a new exhibition titled “Road Show” by Cindy Tower. This show marks Tower third solo exhibition with the gallery and the inaugural exhibition at the Bruno David Projects. Cindy Tower is a painter, sculptor, video and performance artist who lets her creative background shine through in her practices. Raw in spirit and conviction, Tower’s highly articulated works engage the viewer in a visceral, otherworldly experience. Composite views of decrepitude become metaphors of bodily functions and reflect the political climate of our modern world. Wet, gloppy oil paint is applied in a loose yet precise manner in which subjects continuously dematerialize and reemerge. Tower’s painting practice mirrors her concept of gradual accumulation that not only provides an exhausting, claustrophobic sensation but also raises questions regarding the complexity and level of exchange that occurs in our modern world. Presenting the themes of consumption, intimacy, obsolescence and loss, the paintings are an overwhelming celebration of materials and process. They provide the viewer with an intuitive, physical experience that both engages and engulfs him or her in the self-contained environment of each artwork. Born in Alamogordo, New Mexico, Cindy Tower received her B.F.A. from Cornell and was a forerunner of the Williamsburg art scene (NYC) in the early eighties. She went on to obtain her M.F.A. in 1988 from the University of California, San Diego, where she studied under Eleanor Antin and Allan Kaprow. In 2005, she settled in St. Louis to paint disappearing industries. In addition, she has taught at Washington University in St. Louis, The New York Studio School in New York and Savannah College of Art and Design. Tower has exhibited nationally and has been the focus of numerous one-person exhibitions including the New Museum in New York. Her work has been reviewed in national publications, including Art in America and The New York Times. She lives and works between New York, St. Louis and Texas. Support for the creation of significant new works of art has been the core to the mission and program of the Bruno David Gallery since its founding in 2005. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Greg Ott for his thoughtful essay.
