NATUREBOOK by Daniel Raedeke 2

In the Naturebook’ series, I focus on the painted surfaces and textures that has comprised my work on and off for the last decade. The eleven wall paintings and one dual sided painting stand explore the saturated world of images from nature publications such as the late 1960’s Time-Life Nature Library that I was fascinated with as a child. In previous work, I developed layered surface effects as backgrounds and “skins” for invented forms. In Naturebook, I focus the work into an investigation of the layered background, offering up a handmade acoustic compliment to his often digitally inspired artistic output. Each 30 x 30-inches painting in Naturebook explores the themes of archiving, documentation, world building and stratified image memories. The paintings act as sort of posters or chapters in a visual documentation of nature and natural phenomena. The grid evident throughout the series evokes a handmade pixilation and recalls digitally produced imagery while also being all about the physically produced analog properties and the potential of the painted surface. I distill the work into effects, a collection of samples and combinations to be used and repurposed as the “raw material” for future digitally inspired work. Naturebook provides a guide to the natural world through the prism of the digital world.

AFTERWORD by Bruno L. David 4

I am pleased to present an exhibition titled “Naturebook” by Daniel Raedeke at the Bruno David Gallery. This is the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. Daniel Raedeke’s new painting series, offers a handmade, acoustic, compliment to his often digitally inspired artistic output. The paintings explore the saturated world of images from nature publications Raedeke enjoyed as a child. In previous work, Raedeke has developed layered surface effects as backgrounds and skins on invented forms. In Naturebook, Raedeke concentrates the work into an investigation of the layered background. Although expressive and handmade, the works in Naturebook recall a digital past as if archived jpegs of nature photos have broken down over time and are repackaged as color and texture samples. Daniel Raedeke lives and works in St. Louis. He received his M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. Raedeke has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the U.S. Support for the creation of significant new works of art has been the core to the mission and program of the Bruno David Gallery since its founding in 2005. I am deeply grateful to Lauren R. Mann, who gave much time, talent, and expertise to the production of this catalogue. Invaluable gallery staff support for the exhibition was provided by Cleo Azariadis, Marisa Drewes, Ashley Lee, Alex DeRosa, and Ryan Eckert.
