TRACES OF ALCHEMY: THE PRINTS OF DUBINSKY AND TOMAYKO BY KAREN FISH

The very essence of the mono print introduces the notion of the one-of-a-kind, which might run counter to the way printmaking is generally considered, the ability to create multiples, to do a print run. Dubinsky and Tomayko fell into collaborating by happy accident, both attending a community event at the Truro Center for Arts. The art center brought in a steam roller to take printmaking to exaggerated playfulness, inviting young and old to try spontaneous prints en plein air. The print Dubinsky and Tomayko made on the ground that day with the steam roller press was the first unintentional collaboration. At that point, they were seasonal walking buddies, doing three miles on national seashore trails on the wooded land back off Old County Road in Truro. In all of these prints, there is the suggestion of depth, of surface, of layers—made all the more provocative, since these pieces are the result of collaboration. In some pieces, without the context of the others, the viewer might think of an underwater scene because of the organic shapes and their simplistic nature. When viewed together, one sees that these shapes might be found in any garden or place where objects collect and collide. But what is interesting about the prints is not what they are depicting but what they suggest: color change, the way certain shapes are made dynamic, layers of drowned time. These prints, one would imagine, would be pleasing to those that have enthusiasm for abstract expressionist boldness. Strong, consistent, decorative—only in the sense that they compliment. At the same time, those that have enthusiasm for naturalistic illustration and still life set ups, which leads me to the strength of the collaboration. The pieces are self-referential of collaboration, and even someone knowledgeable of Tomayko’s or Dubinsky’s individual work would be hard-pressed to know who did what. There is a wittiness to the interplay, to the lack of realism. The interaction is curious; the content is all about suggestion in suggestiveness. The layers, the images, their inherent mystery, and the juxtaposition of the color fields are dynamic, provocative, strong, and playful. Thus, we see the exciting nature of this collaboration: not two people who came together and worked side by side, but a true fusion, intertwined echoes, that create a third voice altogether individual and compelling. It is as if Tomayko and Dubinsky are another artist, together, rather than two artists side by side—a credit to them both. They integrated not only their artistic expertise but left the images and subject matter that they are both known for at the door, creating prints that truly defy each of the individual artist’s signature styles.

2

What is most interesting about these prints is the space. There is a flatness while at the same time there are shallow layers of space, very much like currents within shallow water. There is a foreground and a background—and movement suggested—but the strength is the matte colors, ways in which the stencils overlap to create impact. The composition allows a drifting. However, there are no shadows here. One would be hard-pressed to know if the stencils used to create these images were part of the finished piece (as in a collage overlay) or which of the shapes are actually printed on the page. It’s like the underwater dream of the beach comber, giving the viewer a peek into the bucket: threads, curly cues, thorny pods, tubulars, and a snake with two heads. In “Dust Devil,” the whole piece is activated by a spiral of shaded blue that suggests vortex, taking in seed pods of rust and orange. In the end, the hallmark of this new work is the exactness of color and an interplay that expresses an indisputable optimism. It is the articulation of a celebration.

Karen Fish is the author of two collections of poems, “The Cedar Canoe,” and “What Is Beyond Us.” Over the years her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Yale Review, American Poetry Review, Poetry,The New Republic and Slate. She lives in Baltimore, Maryland. This text is one in a series of the gallery’s exhibitions written by fellow artists, friends and art critics.

AFTERWORD BY BRUNO L. DAVID

I am pleased to present Steamroller Collaborations, a collaborative exhibition by Yvette Drury Dubinsky and Vicky Tomayko. This will be Dubinsky’s fifth exhibition with the gallery and Tomayko’s first.

Steamroller Collaborations is a duo exhibition by Yvette Drury Dubinsky and Vicky Tomayko. The exhibition had two venues: New York at A.I.R. Gallery and St. Louis at Bruno David Gallery. Each with a strong solo exhibition history and many years of experience as artists using various media and processes, the two are both moving toward the height of their careers. They spent a good part of 2018 and 2019 making this (distinct from each of their individual work) exhibition together in Dubinsky’s studio. Both artists live in Truro, Massachusetts, Dubinsky for a long summer, Tomayko year-round.

It began when a local Art Center in Truro held a public event, to allow anyone to make large works of art using the weight and heft of a steamroller to press ink into a substrate. Tomayko and Dubinsky separately made stencils and combined them, inked and/or used them to resist the ink, then placed them on a concrete driveway to be run over by the truck. The results were so bad, and humorous, that there was no fear that they could be made worse by continuing to work on them. The oneday steamroller project launched a collaboration to rescue the day’s work and create new monotypes and collages, in some cases using the byproducts of the first ones. From the steamroller event the collaboration moved to Dubinsky’s studio and a 38 inch press, more paper, more stencils, more inks and a project that continued over several months, eventually making the work for this exhibition. This is their first collaborative exhibition, a project which profits from each artist’s separate talents. Though the work is abstract, it is inspired by walks through trails and on the beaches of Cape Cod National Seashore. Observations about nature, color, shapes, atmosphere are apparent. Discussions about family, friendships, politics, the state of our planet/world and what its like to be in this world as an artist are more subliminally present. The one-day project launched a vitalized collaboration to create new monotypes and collages.

4

The joint work culminated in this series but the collaboration is ongoing. Steamroller Collaborations was initially exhibited at A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, NY in March and April of 2019. It was shown at Bruno David Gallery in May 2019.

Yvette Drury Dubinsky is based in Truro, MA, St. Louis, MO and New York City. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, before attending what is now the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis, where she received an M.F.A. in 1990. In 2018, she had a solo exhibition at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Her work is in the public collections of the St. Louis Art Museum, The Provincetown Art Association and Museum, The Margaret Harwell Museum, The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, and has been a part of the Art and Embassies program of the United States Department of State.

Vicky Tomayko, based in Truro, MA, is a former Fine Arts Work Center (in Provincetown, MA) fellow and manages the print studio there. She is the recipient of two Ford Foundation grants and has an MFA from Western Michigan University. Her most recent exhibition was at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown in Summer, 2019. Her work is part of the public collection of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

Support for the creation of significant new works of art has been the core to the mission and program of the Bruno David Gallery since its founding in 2005. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Karen Fish for her thoughtful essay. I am deeply grateful to Lauren R. Mann and Sara Ghazi, who gave much time, talent, and expertise to the production of this catalogue. Invaluable gallery staff support for the exhibition was provided by Taylor Fulton, Katie Engelmeyer, Damaris Dunham, Peter Finley, Natalie Snyder, Matt McLoughlin, and Jin Xia.
