Whew, Matthew! It has been a while since our area experienced such an event and I am pleased that for the most part, the county and residents fared well. Some locals who have lived through other hurricanes could not help but make references to Hurricane Hazel and the way that it impacted the area. I would like to express my gratitude to local law enforcement, Emergency Management and Medical Services, Department of Health and Human Services, the Red Cross, Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation and all other partner agencies that lead an organized and methodical approach to plan, prepare, and execute an effective safety net for our community. The entrance of November marks for many the beginning of the holiday season and provides me the needed and often public reminders of the importance of this special time of year. I enjoy everything from the beautification of our local municipalities with holiday lights to the reverence of religious displays on families’ homes and yards. My heart is turned to gratitude for phone calls made and preparations finalized, as we leave our normal routines, and visions of time spent with loved ones takes precedence over our normal course. Despite the challenges that engage us, there is much to be grateful for and many ways to express that gratitude. I am thankful for

Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO

the refining quality of gratitude and for the way that it helps us reach common ground. It is also the impetus for the generosity in providing comfort for those in need. With this month’s theme of giving thanks, I wish to publicly express my gratitude for you, my seniors. The 6th Annual Seniors Helping Seniors and Their Caregivers event continued its upward trajectory in participation and notoriety. BSRI received a multitude of compliments for its program structure, information, and prizes. Thank you to our presenters, performers, and vendors. Participants were genuinely FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

engaged and wanted more information about services in our community. Thank you, seniors, for pre-registering in record numbers, as we were able to accurately provide lunches, seating, and parking.

Open enrollment, or making adjustments to Medicare health insurance plans, continues this month. The election period began Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. This is a great time to review your insurance coverage and is the only time you can make changes. Our SHIIP program can help. This service is free to Medicare-eligible individuals and is available in Shallotte and Southport. Please make a reservation to help us prepare employee and volunteer schedules. To schedule an appointment, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Karen. Sawyer and Associates has created a floor plan for the new Calabash area Senior Center and property surveying is complete. The bid process to select a qualified contractor is the next step. BSRI seeks community support from area residents, businesses, and nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new center. $100,000 will need to be raised to meet that need. So far $25,000 has been raised. If you would like to make a contribution or serve on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. The new Leland Center survived Hurricane Matthew and

is still on track for the December deadline. Interior painting, flooring, and carpet are being installed. If the building is completed on time, we expect an official grand opening around the beginning of the new year. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Leland Center. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. A special thanks to the volunteers, contributors and staff who make it possible to fulfill the important mission of this organization. It is simply impossible to list all those who have publicly and privately supported BSRI. These special people understand that providing services to our seniors is a collaborative and community effort. We are most grateful for the time, resources, and work provided by all. Please be mindful of those around you this holiday season. I am burdened by the thought of those who will pass the coming days in loneliness. The magnitude of this problem cannot be overcome by one organization alone. Please reach out to those who suffer in isolation as life sometimes dictates the cruel reality that family and good friends may not be close by. May we all be found well.

Your Devoted Servant, Jim

Brunswick County’s representatives to the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (STHL) attended the fall meeting Oct. 4 and 5. They worked to establish five legislative priorities to present to the N.C. legislature in 2017.

The North Carolina Home and Community Care Block Grant (HCCBG) assures cost-effective home- and community-based services to the elderly, malnourished, homebound, and those who are socially and economically needy. About 10,000 seniors are on the waiting list for services. The STHL requests the Assembly increase the HCCBG funding by $7 million in recurring funds.

The STHL was created by the N.C. General Assembly in 1993. The STHL works to provide information to senior citizens on matters being considered by the N.C. legislature, to promote citizen involvement and advocacy concerning aging issues, and to assess the legislative needs of older citizens. Each county has one delegate. Brunswick County’s delegate to the STHL is Brian Flanagan, who also serves as speaker pro tempore. Our alternate delegate is Audi Lowrimore. Find out more about the STHL at http://www.ncsthl.org/ and on Facebook (North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature). At the fall meeting, delegates decided on five agenda items to improve and enhance the lives of N.C.’s seniors. They will present

Commissioned in 1987, the state Study Commission on Aging was repealed in 2017. The STHL requests it be reestablished.

Increase funding for Senior Centers by an additional $300,000 in recurring funds for 163 senior centers in 96 counties that provide programs and services to enhance the health and wellness of older adults. Hurricane Matthew

Hurricane Matthew

By Lee Norris serve the Boiling Spring Lakes Senior Center for Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI,) and at the Brunswick Senior Center in Southport. I had an amazing opportunity to serve our community during Hurricane Matthew. It was Friday night before the storm, 9-ish, and I was all settled in, ready to ride out Hurricane Matthew all by my lonesome in my little Southport bungalow, when my phone said, “Message!”

humor. Ken, in his 80s, recovering from a stroke but able to use a walker or a chair, was talkative, independent-minded, and missing his wife, who had been taken to a nursing home because of her special needs. Robert was blind, frightened, and not very mobile. I helped getting them to the dining room, bringing food and snacks, and watching movies on the computer. We talked and laughed and rode out the storm with the peace and joy of making new friends.

Throughout the day, Jim Fish, It was a text from Susan BSRI’s CEO, dropped by the Whitley at the Southport shelter. He helped arrange Senior Center. She said, meals, facilities, and “Health and Human Lee Norris equipment throughout the Services is requesting weekend, and he made time to employees or volunteers to assist stop by and look in on the seniors at nurses with seniors who have WBHS. He even spent Saturday special needs. They will be alone night in my stead as I went home for and may just need someone to chat a few hours to check that all was with or play a game.” secure. When I returned next I responded with my usual morning, I relieved Teresa Muchlermotto: “I live to serve and I serve to Nogi, our nutrition coordinator who live, count me in!” had come in earlier Sunday morning to give Jim a much-needed rest. Report to West Brunswick High School on Saturday morning at 6 a.m., came the reply. I drove through heavy rain and wind to arrive. Little did I know that the shelter had been open all night and there were already nearly 100 people occupying the cots. More were arriving, and by noon, there were 125 people, 12 dogs, 5 cats and 2 parakeets! I was assigned to a room with three men needing special care. Gerry, a septuagenarian paraplegic in an electric chair, had a wonderful, positive attitude and a wry sense of

Let me tell you something about the wonderful people who set up and maintain the emergency shelters. The American Red Cross, Brunswick County Health and Human Services, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and the staff of WBHS all pitched in to provide cots, blankets, dry clothes, wheelchairs, and hot food to folks who otherwise would have been left out in the storm. The nurses slept very little as they went from room to room looking out for everyone’s needs. Brunswick County Animal

Services provided shelter for the animals and the Sheriff’s Department kept all feeling safe and secure. By Sunday night, many had left for home. Some returned because power had not been restored or floodwaters had barred their way. I stayed the night to assist as needed. An extra hand (or strong back) can come in handy getting folks in and out of beds and chairs. Monday morning saw clear skies, power restored to many areas, and couple of buses to return the sheltered to their homes. Jim Fish arrived with a BSRI van and we returned a half-dozen folks to their homes in Sunset Beach, Supply, and Ocean Isle Beach. You might consider serving as a volunteer when the next emergency arises; let me tell you, it is worth every moment.

BSRI’s congregate meals and home-delivered meals will soon be prepared in-house under the supervision of chef Ryan Gibbs.

As of mid-December, local chef and food service guru Ryan Gibbs will be taking over BSRI’s food service. “I’m very excited,” Gibbs said. “We’re going to prep on-site. We plan to create better quality and more variety, with more input from our seniors.” Gibbs owns Gibbs Management Services, which provides consulting and catering for health care and institutional food service. Through menu design, food supplier negotiations, and quality control, Gibbs has a history of raising quality and lowering costs in programs throughout Southeastern N.C. BSRI Food Service under a contract with Brunswick County. As of Dec. 19, meal prep will now take place in the Brunswick Center at Southport kitchen. “Cooking our meals in-house allows us to have complete autonomy over our menu, ingredients, and the quality of our product,” said Yvette Gosline, BSRI Vice President of Programs and Services. “Ryan … can negotiate great rates with food service providers so we can get much better quality product at the same rate.” Gibbs will partner with local farmers to get farm-fresh ingredients, and with the Cooperative Extension and other area groups to get the best possible meals on the table for Brunswick County seniors. “We work to the very highest of standards,” Gibbs said. If you have suggestions for the new meals, Gibbs would love to hear them. “We want more input from seniors. Whatever they communicate to us that’s achievable and in our budget constraints, we’ll do it,” he said.

and private catering out of each kitchen,” Gibbs said. The Brunswick Center at Shallotte is equipped with a fullservice kitchen too. The new Brunswick Center at Leland, scheduled to open in January, will also have a full kitchen. Once those kitchens are certified by the county, they can be used for meal prep too, bringing fresher food closer to home for area seniors. “We plan on adding more meals

“We will be able to purchase food from the N.C. Food Bank for a weekend Meals on Wheels program,” Gosline said. “And these can be fun meals—they’re not determined by regulations.” The centers’ kitchens and banquet facilities can also be used to generate new revenue streams for BSRI. “We can rent out the facilities,”

Gosline said, “Or open kitchens to local chefs and bakers who may need that space for special events.” Revenues from kitchen and banquet facility rentals will help fund BSRI programs and services for Brunswick County Seniors. The additional kitchens are expected to be online by next July. Meanwhile, ideas are flowing and details are being hammered out. “It’s quite a project, but it’s exciting,” Gibbs said.

By Linda Walters Early Thanksgiving morning, the Shallotte Presbyterian Church will open its door to welcome members of the South Brunswick Interchurch Council (SBIC) along with Jim Fish, President and CEO of Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI), Zack Canady, Nutrition Coordina- “One of the most tor, and Meals on Wheels important things drivers. Their goal is to deliver smiles and Thanks- you can do on this giving blessings to our earth is to let South Brunswick County people know they neighbors in need. SBIC is composed of 21 are not alone.” area churches. For more –Shannon L. Alder than a decade, church members, BSRI staff, and drivers have provided traditional hot Thanksgiving meals and day-after lunches to more than 250 area seniors. In October, BSRI sent letters to residents informing them that meals would be delivered on Thanksgiving and asking them to respond. SBIC members shop for food and begin cooking turkey and all the wonderful trimmings early Thanksgiving morning. BSRI provides transportation, supplies, equipment (hot and cold packs), nutritional oversight, and drivers to complete the process.

Trinity United Methodist Church members prepare Thanksgiving meals for the Southport and Leland areas on Thanksgiving Day, 2015. The volunteers will be back in action serving area seniors this year.

In Southport, dedicated volunteers and members of the Trinity United Methodist Church cook and deliver traditional Thanksgiving meals to homebound seniors in who responded to letters. It’s a labor of love given and received in kind for many years. The Leland Center has a similar program. “Neighbor's Helping Neighbors” is the motto for SBIC. It’s something we all can be thankful for.

model for providing respite services to family members caring for a relative with dementia. We recommend increasing funding by 10 percent annually to meet the expected growth.

North Carolina has not provided any funding for the APS Program, which protects victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation, since the 2010-2012

state budget. Funding is now provided by county governments and a decreasing federal block grant. We recommend N.C. allocate $5 million in recurring funds to meet the growing need for APS in North Carolina.

Holiday Help

Help to Make the Season Bright

S

tockings for Seniors brings a little Christmas spirit to area seniors each year. BSRI’s Stockings for Seniors program collects wishes from people in BSRI’s meal program and matches them with groups and individuals who want to spread some holiday cheer. Stockings for Seniors collects gifts such as socks, slippers, puzzle books, and household necessities for Christmas presents. Area seniors may submit wishes for two presents, and they are “adopted” by groups or who fulfill their first wish, and sometimes their second. For some seniors, this may be the only gift they receive. Groups and individuals who want to spread a little holiday cheer are invited to adopt a senior this year. Wishes are anonymous to provide privacy, but you will learn the age and gender of your recipient when you choose a stocking with a wish.

SUGGESTED GIFT ITEMS FOR MEN OR WOMEN:  Personal hygiene items  Socks  Slippers  Lap blankets  Pajamas  Disposable undergarments  Ensure/ Boost  Nominal Walmart gift cards  Puzzle books  Candies and Chocolates

Last year, the St. James Service Club, composed of residents from St. James Plantation, fulfilled about 70 wishes in the Stockings for Seniors program. Pat Fornuff and Cindy Kirwan co-chaired the program in which more than 40 volunteers helped make angels, set up Christ-

mas trees, and designate drop-off locations for gifts. BSRI is only one of the organization receiving gifts from the St. James Service Club. This benevolent club has raised more than $1 million during the past 15 years for charitable causes. The Shallotte Senior Center helps fulfill the wishes of those in southern Brunswick County. Last year, the center gathered gifts for nearly 200 recipients, said Anne Gass, director of The Brunswick Center at Shallotte. Donors from St. Brennan’s Church, the Shallotte Women’s Sorority, and area individuals wrapped gifts and brought them to the center for distribution. “I make it a point every year to go along and give a gift to a homebound person,” Gass said. “That’s the best part of all. The look on their face is amazing.” This event is an annual treat for both the people who give gifts to the seniors of Brunswick County and those who are the beneficiaries of these gifts. BSRI would like to thank all those who donate time and gifts to make our Stockings for Seniors program a success. Merry Christmas!
