appy Holidays, Everyone! We made it to the end of another year and 2017 will go down as another great 12 months of hard work, dedication, and accomplishment. It is hard to believe that we opened two new full-service senior centers and a new kitchen in Leland. I am so proud of the way that our community has come together to support, provide resources, and improve the quality of life for our seniors. December marks the 1-year anniversary month of the purchase of the Brunswick Center at Supply Senior Center. Much work has been done to bring that center to fruition and make it a jewel in the portfolio of centers. Many have enjoyed the programs and services available at this wonderful location that serves the Supply, Lockwood Folly, Sunset Harbor, and southern Bolivia areas. The building has also been able to generate income for programs and services through evening rentals. We are all grateful for 2017 and the many blessings and achievements realized this year. I would like to take a moment to thank our seniors, the BSRI board of directors, county managers, and county commissioners for their

commitment to our senior community. My hope for this holiday season is an increased measure of generosity, service and love.

News & Announcements Open enrollment, or making adjustments to Medicare health insurance plans, continues this month. The election period runs through Dec. 7. This is a great time to review your insurance coverage and the only time you can make changes. This service is free to individuals 55 and older and is available in Shallotte and Southport. I am burdened by the thought of those who will pass the coming days in loneliness. The magnitude of this problem cannot be overcome by one organization alone. Please reach out to those who suffer in isolation. May the spirit of the holidays be with you and yours!

Dining

Mallory Balice Program Specialist Christmas is right around the corner, and we all know it can be challenging for some of us to stay on a health kick during the season. December is full of holiday feasts and festive parties which can all impact our commitment to healthful eating. Here are some nutritional strategies that will help you stay healthy during the holidays.

mashed potatoes. This can add a ton of flavor and also decrease added butter. Try reduced-fat cheese for casseroles.

Use half the amount of sugar in pies – this will save you half the calories! Eat a fiber-filled breakfast – start your day with a small meal that includes high protein and whole grains if you plan on eating more later. While socializing with friends, do not rush to eat. Eat slowly and mindfully and enjoy every taste.

Try using low-sodium fat-free chicken broth when making

trays – this will help reduce overeating and nibbling.

Stay away from the appetizer

Use half whole wheat flour and half regular all-purpose flour. Whole wheat will give you extra fiber and nutrition. The holidays are a perfect time to celebrate with friends and family. If we just prep and plan beforehand, we can all keep that extra holiday weight off for the New Year!

eborah Lannon had no idea in 2009, while on a threemonth sabbatical to Holden Beach, that in 2016 she would become the first fulltime paid chaplain at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center.

Chaplains are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to meet with patients to offer support, hope, and strength. They are there to listen, to be the person you can talk to when you can’t talk to family or friends. A chaplain will celebrate your joy with you or offer a supportive presence should you face a major life change.

After 25 years as an ordained minister of five churches with the United Church of Canada, Deborah chose to retire early from congregational ministry. HIV/AIDS Awareness Among Older Adults December 1st is World AIDS Day. In 1988 World AIDS Day was founded to remember those who have fallen in the fight against the HIV/AIDS virus, and to show support to those living with it. In light of World AIDS Day it is important to highlight a population that is silently rising in the HIV/AIDS epidemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is an increasing number of seniors living with HIV/AIDS, amounting to more than one-quarter of those with the virus being over age 50. Researches believe there two different sets of factors that contribute to this increase. First, the availability of more effective medication has meant that people have been able to better manage their disease and are now living longer lives. But this only accounts for part of that increase, and 17 percent of all new cases of infection occurred in people over 50. As Baby Boomers age, their cohort will be more likely to be unmarried, live alone, have second marriages or be reentering the dating pool. These circumstances coupled with greater access to male enhancement medications, stereotypes and misconceptions about risk factors, make this population more vulnerable. Social factors aside, there are physical risk factors as well. As we age, our skin becomes a less effective barrier from disease and our immune systems weaken. There is also the risk of HIV/AIDS-related symptoms may be misattributed, by patients and doctors, to other chronic illnesses common in later life, further delaying appropriate diagnosis. The most important point to remember is that HIV/AIDS testing is crucial if you are sexually active at ANY age. Signs and symptoms may not be visible for years and advanced age does not make one immune. This generation of older adults will live longer and be more proactive about their health than any other. Let’s make sure sexual health is included in that important equation. Speak with your doctor about HIV testing. You can find questions to help start the conversation on www.healthfinder.gov.

On October 24, 2017, at the Tuesday Tai Chi class, Sifu Dean Sutzer presented long-time Shallotte Tai Chi student Margarete O’Leary with her Crane Level Teaching Certificate. She says Tai Chi is the perfect balance of strength and beauty. She enjoys learning the martial applications which lie beneath each graceful movement. “I used to practice and teach Tae Kwon Do , and I have the battle scars to show for it; but, now, I prefer the gentle peacefulness of Tai Chi which is easier on my old(er) bones! Tai Chi has made me healthier and less stressed. I am grateful that the center offers this awesome class taught by a knowledgeable and caring instructor.”
