Time passes so quickly and it is hard to imagine that one year ago this month we were breaking ground on a new senior center for our North Brunswick area. What a beautiful center it turned out to be and worthy of the seniors who enjoy it. It was nice to finally see this important goal met and more importantly to see the way that the new center will deliver services to our seniors for years to come. Thanks those who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Feb. 20. Congratulations to all and a special thanks to those who worked so hard to make it possible. Opening one new senior center would be an accomplishment for any community, but the opportunity to open two new centers within a month of each other is truly remarkable. The new Brunswick Center at Supply will also open this month and bring the Supply, Lockwood Folly, Sunset Harbor, and southern Bolivia communities together. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for March 20 and is open to the general public. Opening ceremonies will begin promptly at 3 p.m. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

March 2017 marks the first anniversary of BSRI's SCOPE certification process. BSRI will soon begin the same process for its new Brunswick Center at Supply, and in the not-so-distant future, the Brunswick Center at Calabash. Thank you to all who helped with this important milestone.

BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A fundraising committee is being formed to help raise the $100,000 necessary to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or serve on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Thanks to all who make a difference each day!

The 30-member Leland Area Rotary Club presents Jim Fish, President and CEO of Brunswick Senior Resources Inc., with a $10,000 check for construction of a full service kitchen at the new Brunswick Center at Leland.
F
riends and dignitaries gathered Feb. 20 to cut the ribbon for the new Brunswick Center at Leland. After a year of construction, the spacious new center at the corner of Village Road and Town Hall Drive is open for business.
The new center has been a labor of love for many, and Leland seniors and staff are thrilled. “I'm excited to meet all those who have called the center inquiring about when we will open,” said Adrienne Brown, Assistant Director of the Brunswick Center at Leland. “Not having enough space to accommodate our seniors has been an issue in the past. But now we are able to offer a variety of programs simultaneously to our older adult community.” The new building nearly triples the previous space, allowing for new programs and services.
BSRI is establishing full service kitchens and preparing meals on-site
to ensure BSRI's senior participants are receiving the tastiest, healthiest meals possible. To demonstrate their support of a more nutritious on-site meal program, The Cape Fear Memorial Foundation awarded BSRI a $30,000 grant, with the potential for an additional $20,000 in matching funds, for the purpose of adding a full service kitchen to the Leland construction plans. Learning of this opportunity for matching grant dollars, the Leland Area Rotary Club presented BSRI with an award of $10,000. In addition, John Ingraham, LLC of First Financial Education Centers and chairman of the BSRI board of directors, also presented BSRI with a check for $10,000, reaching the terms of the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation’s grant requirements.
The community pulled together to meet a $150,000 goal to provide the new Leland Center with supplies, equipment, and furniture.
BSRI would like to thank every individual who contributed to the success of our new center. In particular we would like to thank:
The Town of Leland
The Cape Fear Memorial Foundation
The Cannon Foundation, Inc.

e’ll be cutting the ribbon at an open house for the new Brunswick Center at Supply at 3 p.m. March 20—please come! We can’t wait to show off our newest facility at 101 Stone Chimney Road. This center replaces the current Supply (Lockwood Folly) site and the Sunset Harbor site. The beautiful building opens as a daily nutrition site this month, with an eye toward future growth. When time and funding permit, BSRI will offer case management services and expanded hours at Stone Chimney.
ATMC donated desks and office furnishings from their Sunset Beach renovation project for use in the new Supply offices. This donation went a long way to help upfit the new center so it could open quickly and provide programs and services to area seniors. BSRI is grateful for the generous donation.
Jim Fish, his son Zach, and ATMC’s Ron Johnston spent Christmas Eve dismantling and relocating ATMC’s donated office furnishings to the new senior center in Supply.

ccording to this month’s Medicare Blog, there are easy steps that you can take to protect yourself from pneumonia. A million Americans go to the hospital every year with pneumonia. Pneumonia is a lung infection
caused by pneumococcal disease, which can also cause blood infections and meningitis. The bacteria that causes pneumococcal disease is spread by direct person-to-person contact. There’s a vaccine to help prevent pneumonia, but only 61 percent of adults 65 and over have ever gotten it. Medicare can help protect you from pneumococcal infections. The pneumococcal shot is the best way to help prevent these infections. Medicare Part B covers the shot and a second shot one year after you got the first shot. You may be at a higher risk for these infections if you:
Are 65 or older
Have a chronic illness (like
asthma, diabetes, or lung, heart, liver, or kidney disease)
Have a condition that weakens your immune system (like HIV, AIDS, or cancer)
Live in a nursing home or other long-term care facility
Have cochlear implants or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks
Smoke tobacco
Take the easy step towards prevention, and get your pneumococcal shot today!

P
ut Your Best Fork Forward! That’s the theme for this year’s National Nutrition Month, celebrated in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The fork is a key player in making healthy food choices. It helps us determine the amount of food to eat. Frequently, the food choices we make are appropriate but the portion sizes are more than we actually need. A simple change in behavior such as putting the fork down between bites, thus slowing our eating, allows our brain to know when we are comfortably full. All food and beverage choices matter. Choose healthy foods,
healthy eating patterns, and the right amount of calories. These will help you maintain a healthy body weight, get good nutrition, and reduce the risk of chronic disease. This doesn’t mean you must count calories. Instead, find the right intake of food to achieve your health and wellness goals.
As National Nutrition Month progresses, try to include a different healthy habit each week. Try these ideas:
Week 1: Drink more water. Try for half your body weight in ounces each day – a 150-pound person should consume 75 ounces of water daily.
Week 2: Try a meatless dinner one night. Check out the recipe below with protein and fiber rich beans.
Week 3: Increase your physical activity each day by 5 minutes (if able, and with your health providers’ permission.)
Week 4: Eat more healthy antioxidants by choosing colorful fruits and vegetables.
Think about what you want your fork to look like. A colorful fork will usually translate to healthy eating. Think about beautiful fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and low fat dairy.

eniors driving down Village Road in Shallotte may drive by a cherished part of history and not realize the significance of a small town treasure. On the front grounds of the Shallotte Middle School stands Sunnyside School, built for the town in 1915 by L.C. Tripp for the sum of $1,500. Sunnyside got its name because it was built on the sunny side of the property. School children attended Sunnyside until 1927 when a new high school was built to accommodate the growing town. Sunnyside was kept on the grounds and continued to be used as classrooms until the senior high school was closed and torn down in 1972, when Brunswick County contracted to build three new high schools.

Brunswick County History
Sunnyside School in Shallotte dates back more than 100 years. Shallotte schoolchildren grew up to remember the schoolhouse fondly and worked hard to preserve the building, which can be seen on Village Road.
Sunnyside faced an uncertain future. It had served the town well, but progress had arrived. Mayor Beamon Hewett and the town aldermen didn’t want to tear down such a valuable part of history along with the cherished memories of so many Shallotte townspeople. So Sunnyside was moved to the northeastern section of N.C. Route 130 West and Main Street. Shallotte Middle school was built on the former Sunnyside grounds. In 1999, a motion was bought forward at the Shallotte Centennial Commission to restore Sunnyside. The Shallotte Historical Preservation Society was founded and which worked with the town of Shallotte to restore and move Sunnyside back to its original location in August 2002.
The charm of a small town comes from its people and its history. Some may see a building and think only of its purpose—when that purpose is done, so is the building. But those who carry the memories see not just a building, but also family and friends laughing and playing in the school yard until the school bell rings. One of these is Leon Elwood Cheers, President of Shallotte Historical Society, who attended fifth grade at Sunnyside School in 1937. “Students walked to school and when the teacher, Frances Sloane, rang the bell the students would know it was 8 a.m. and the school day had started,” Cheers said. “Leaving school at 3 in the afternoon, the students would walk
home. After school, then as now, students would do their chores and after chores there was fun at the beach, swimming at the local swimming hole, and, after the roads were paved in 1939, roller skating.” Cheers and most of his ancestors were born and lived in the Shallotte and Supply area. Most made their living from farming, fishing, and some turpentine work, the same as most Shallotteans. Cheers’ grandfather, Martin Luther White, and great-grand father, John Hamilton White, were merchants and operated a general merchandise store in downtown Shallotte for several years. Today Sunnyside School may be rented for community or private events. Interested? Contact Emilee Sinclair at (910) 754-4032 or esinclair@townofshallotte.org for availability and pricing.

tears. Count your age by friends, not years.”
There are two types of polyps: Adenomatous polyps (which can change into cancer), a pre-cancerous condition, and Hyperplastic polyps. Inflammatory polyps are more common, but they are not pre-cancerous. If cancer starts in a polyp it can grow into the walls of the colon or rectum, eventually grow into the blood vessels or lymph vessels and to other parts of the body.

appreciate the hard work and dedication to our seniors.
Regular colon screenings should begin at age 50 because the risk factor increases dramatically. A screening can also find colorectal cancer early, when it is highly curable. If you have not had a colorectal cancer screening speak with your doctor and make an appointment today.

We will meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 1:30-4pm. This is not a class. It’s a gathering where we work on our own projects and possibly on charity projects as a group. Get In Shape! Stay in Shape! Walk with ease (Monday, &Tuesday @ 11:30Wednesday @11:30) The Arthritis Foundation Walk with Ease program was developed to help people with or without arthritis form walking groups for safety and success. How does it work? Groups meet for six weeks, three times per week. Each session last about one hour. Who can participate? The Walk with Ease program is designed for people with arthritis young and old, male and female, fit and not so fit. It is also suitable for people without arthritis who would like to begin a regular walking program to gain the benefits of regular aerobic exercise. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain you can probably participate successfully, and the program can be modified to meet your needs. How do I register? Participants are accepted first come first served. To participate, complete and return an application. If the course is full when your application is received you will be placed on a waiting list notified by mail.
Yoga ( Wednesday at 1pm & 2pm and Fridays at 2pm) This is an " ALL-levels " class. Traditional Yoga poses will be adapted to the individual's ability. This peaceful sequence will help you gain flexibility, improve sleep and reduce stress. Pilates and Barre ( PiBarre) Mondays & Tuesdays at 1:30 ($6) Combines the best of Pilates and barre! An upbeat, low impact class combining basic ballet and Pilates. Designed to tighten the core, enhance your strength, balance and flexibility. Tai Chi Mondays at 11:30 ($6) Uses relaxing tai chi movements to focus on improving coordination and balance.
Arthritis Exercise (Thursdays at 10:30) The Arthritis Foundation has developed exercise programs for people with arthritis and related diseases. The program consists of classes that meet 2 to 3 times a week and are usually one hour in length. Programs offer multiple components to help reduce pain and stiffness, and to maintain or improve mobility, muscle strength and functional ability. Endurance-building routines, relaxation exercises and health education topics are also included. This is a recreational group exercise program with a variety of exercises that can be performed sitting standing or lying on the floor. Effectiveness has been documented through research studies. The Arthritis Foundation exercise programs are designed for anyone with arthritis, related rheumatoid diseases or musculoskeletal conditions. Participants range from those who are sedentary and limited by impaired joint mobility to those with only mild joint involvement and or problems with fatigue. Many classes will include participants with different capabilities, so offering variations of exercise will ensure that everyone can participate. The programs are designed to encourage participants to enjoy an active lifestyle and improve health in a welcoming, supportive, fun environment, as well as to begin a new activities while making friends.
