e at Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. are lucky to enjoy a network of senior centers across the county, offering programs and services unheard of in other places. Many counties have only one or two senior centers, and they may not offer daily hours or as wide a selection of classes, programs, and services to meet the needs and augment the lives of area seniors. Many people contribute to this exceptional system. Our CEO Jim Fish has a vision for BSRI that seeks excellence in all endeavors, and that goal filters down through the staff and even to the many volunteers who help things happen on the ground, every day. The Buzz hopes to give you a glimpse from time to time of some of the goings-on behind closed doors. On page 16 you’ll read about the Senior Tar Heel Legislature, in which our local delegate Audie Lowrimore advocates for funding and programs to improve the lives of some of our neediest seniors. And please take a look at pages 12 and 13, where we showcase some great event spaces BSRI has for rent. When our seniors don’t need the space, we can offer it to others in our community for conferences and events, raising money for Brunswick County programs and services for seniors. Need a room? Take a look! Shelagh Clancy Editor, Brunswick Senior Buzz Newsletters.bsri@gmail.com
Letter from a Director
I
f you are reading this, the Brunswick Center at Calabash has officially opened, hooray! Thank you for being patient as our construction dust settles. Our August calendar is full of events that will keep us active, learning, and laughing all month long. I’d like to take this opportunity to brag about you and some of our neighbors, specifically our friends at Ace Hardware. Photo by Aline Harrell
Aline Harrell composed the cover photo of the sound and the summer flower Gaillardia (blanket flower) at the point on Oak Island. Harrell, a member of the Coastal Carolina Camera Club, lives in Boiling Spring Lakes and attends photo classes at the Brunswick Center at Southport.
Our final pieces of furniture arrived for our center. Several large cabinets for the art studio arrived without notice. We were excited to get the pieces inside when the driver informed us that the company stopped service at the truck, and that they had no tools to help us get them inside. Each piece was over 100 pounds, with some well over 300 pounds.
Angelique Carlson, Director The Brunswick Center at Calabash
We weren’t sure what to do. We visited our neighbor, Gigi, the owner of The Briar Patch, and while she didn’t have a pallet jack, she gave us several folks to call and ask for help. She suggested LETTER, continued on page 6
Jerry Baker and Brian Tanch of Ace Hardware saved the day when we needed community help and a pallet jack. Thank you for serving our new center and the Calabash community!
LETTER, continued from page 5
contacting Ace Hardware to ask if they had a pallet jack that we might borrow. Our team began making the calls to connect with the folks at Ace to ask for help, and fortune smiled. Jerry Baker and Brian Tanch saved the day. Arriving in their pickup, the men unloaded the Ace Hardware pallet jack and went to work. They hauled, pulled and pushed our furniture into the new art studio. The folks from Ace Hardware shared their time, talent, and treasure to make the Brunswick Center at Calabash ready for everyone to enjoy. Jerry and Brian asked for nothing. They exemplify selfless service. Service to others is what a community center is all about, and we need you. We are launching several outreach programs at the Brunswick Center at Calabash. One program is Crafting for Good, where we will choose projects to make lives brighter for other residents of our county. This quarter, we will be making lap blankets for our friends who receive meals with our Meals on Wheels program. We will distribute them this fall. Another program to reach out into our community is Get INvolved, where community organizations come to the center to talk about what they do, how they help, and what we can do to Get INvolved. Community giving isn’t just beneficial to those who are being served. Volunteers 55 and older have better physical and emotional health, have greater life satisfaction, and live longer. It’s why we do what we do here, and we invite you to join us in community service. Remember to say hello to Jerry and Brian when you see them at Ace Hardware or out in town. Please tell them thank you, from all of us.

Melissa Starr is a transplanted Jersey Girl hailing from Bruce Springsteen’s hometown of Freehold, N.J., who came to live in N.C. in 1986. She lived in the Triangle area for most of that time until her recent relocation to Supply in June. Starr received her undergraduate and graduate social work degrees from Rutgers University, beginning her career in clinical social work as a psychotherapist in New Jersey and later in Durham. There she worked for mental health and family counseling services and in her own private practice for more than 20 years. Starr met her husband, Samuel Veach, in 1992. They married and have a son, Joshua, and daughter, Rachel, who both attend UNC-Chapel Hill. Ask her about them and she will beamingly extol all of their virtues and accomplishments, as any proud parent will. When her children were small, Starr took time off from work and chose to not continue as a therapist upon her return to the work world. Her love of service to others brought her in to the world of Adult Day Center management. She directed an adult day health center in Granville County for the past 16 years. “When I saw the opening in Supply, I knew that it was just what I was looking for and where I wanted to be. I am so excited to join the BSRI team,” Starr says. She is looking forward to her work with the seniors that she now calls neighbors, helping build a senior
center and community in Supply. “Put simply, I love people and embrace all of their hopes and dreams for their life’s journey. I am grateful every day that they have chosen me to be along for the ride,” she says.
After joining the BSRI Leland team in March 2018, Assistant Director Courtney Bledsoe, is transferring to Supply. She will miss her Leland family greatly, and will continue to cherish the many relationships she has made.
Vikki Hine is currently serving as site manager at Ash Senior Site. Hine has been working with BSRI for the past two years, helping the nutrition coordinators and case management and assisting wherever needed.
"Life is full of transitions and changes, but I believe that change encourages growth and promotes inspiration,” Bledsoe says. “I am excited to embrace a new beginning by relocating to Supply to fill the Assistant Director role. I look forward to working with Center Director Melissa Starr, building new relationships, developing new activities and programs, and continuing BSRI's mission to serve our seniors.”
Hine enjoys getting to know all of the folks in this area and has developed a special fondness for working with those seniors who are homebound. Currently, she is working in the Shallotte and Ash areas. Hine is at the Ash meal site two days a week, making sure participants are taken care of as much as possible. At BSRI, everyone wears a variety of hats. Hine has worn each hat with love and laughter.

By Mike McGurn Thrift Store Operations Manager Welcome to Thrift Store Throwback! This month we uncovered an interesting photo that turned up in our Thrift Store in Calabash. Do you remember these Hollywood names? From left to right are Keye Luke, Chet Dowling, and Robert Ito. Keye Luke was a Chinese-American actor best known for playing Lee Chan, the “Number One Son” in Charlie Chan films. He played Kato in the original Green Hornet film series, Master Po in the TV series Kung Fu, and Mr. Wing in the Gremlins films. Chet Dowling was a writer and producer whose writing credits include Candid Camera, The Joan Rivers Show, Donny and Marie, Alice, Three’s Company and Gimme a Break. He wrote 52 episodes of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh–In from 1969-71. Robert Ito, born in Canada and of Japanese descent, played Sam Fujiyama on the TV series Quincy, M.E. and Larry Mishima on the evening soap opera series Falcon Crest, among other roles. o, it’s too hot to turn on the stove, and you don’t feel like going out, calling in or firing up the grill. What can you make for a nice nourishing meal with a mix of protein, veggies, and carbs? If you have cheese, shrimp, garbanzo beans, salad greens, bread, and zucchini or tomatoes, you can have a wonderful meal. Beans are a good source of protein. One of my favorite summer suppers is a spinach and mixed salad or head lettuce bed of greens with half a can of garbanzo beans, white cannellini beans, or kidney beans, some cut up tomato, and some shredded cheese for added flavor and protein, dressed with a simple olive oil and vinegar. I prefer wine vinegar to balsamic—but use what you like. Salt and pepper may be added at your own preference levels. Add a piece of bread to sop up the extra dressing and you have a fabulous meal! If you have leftover cooked shrimp, put them on top and the meal becomes gourmet. No recipe needed.
Caprese salad makes a quick, delicious hot-weather meal. The tomato shown is Pineapple, a heritage tomato from Indigo Farms.
Tonight for supper I am going to have a caprese salad. Sound fancy? Everything sounds better if you use the Italian word for it. A caprese salad is a slice of tomato with a slice of mozzarella cheese on top. Put a piece of basil on top of that and then dress with salt, pepper, olive oil, and vinegar. Once again, a slice of bread
is a nice addition to the meal. Usually I eat three or four of these tomato-cheese combos if it’s a main course, one or two if it is a side dish.
If you don’t mind boiling some pasta you can have a gourmet meal—but that does mean you have to turn on the stove. Feel like noodles, but want to
avoid carbs and cooking? If you have a couple of zucchini in the garden or the refrigerator, try slicing them into very fine strips, or use a spiralizer to make them into noodles, called zoodles. Heat them for about thirty seconds in the microwave and drain. You can do this ahead of time. Once they are drained, add cut up fresh tomato, some cooked shrimp or beans, dress with vinegar and oil and you have a great imitation-pasta
dinner. Add salt and pepper to taste. Put some cheese on the table and let each person add their own. To add a carb, bring out that piece of bread. If you don’t mind being a bit more carb-centric and turning on the stove, try this pasta recipe. Start the cold sauce as early in the day as you can so the flavors will blend and then, just before it’s time to serve, add the warm pasta, stir, and serve.

Quote of the month: "Any human anywhere will blossom in a hundred unexpected talents and capacities simply by being given the opportunity to do so." -Doris Lessing
New Senior Center in Calabash: The talent search is on! As a nonprofit, we rely on the strength of our community to provide interesting and beneficial programs for our seniors. Seniors, whether recently retired or seasoned older adults, deserve the opportunity to enjoy our services. Our senior centers are community centers. They are a place for building skills and knowledge they are a place for seniors to expand their capabilities and learn new hobbies. In order to offer this, we must find interesting and fresh talents, individuals of any age willing to come and share their skills in the form of an ongoing class or a one-time class. Take a moment to reflect about the hobbies you do on your own. Is there something you can share? Can you take a day of your week for an hour or two and show others how to do it? If your answer was “yes”, or even if it was “maybe,” please let us know. We want to discover those in our community who have hidden talents. We may be able to help you form what you love to do into a lesson for others. There are many different ways our organization is dependent on volunteers. Like many non-profits, our very heartbeat depends on the surrounding community and their willingness to donate time, talent and treasure, the “Three Ts” of success at the root of any mission! It’s important that participants already attending classes at the senior center know to get involved in this way. Currently our biggest need for instructors is for Calabash and Supply senior centers. We are hoping to build in more programing at these locations, so as we wrap up the summer and head into our busiest season, please consider getting involved. ̶ Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah Powell To get involved, call (910) 754-2300 or fill out an application at www.bsrinc.org/volunteers

n the middle of the summer many flowering plants have begun to fade and lose their petals. Removing the spent flowers improves the health and appearance of plants by channeling the plant’s resources away from seed production and into vegetative growth. This process is known as deadheading. Deadheading not only prevents the formation of seeds but stimulates additional flowering. It will often stimulate growth of side shoots in some plants on which additional flowers will form. Deadheading may seem like a tedious task but the new blooms spawned from this task can make the extra effort well worth it. Some of the more commonly grown garden plants the reward these efforts with a second bloom are: Bleeding heart Coneflower Delphinium Lupine Phlox Sage Salvia Shasta daisy Veronica Yarrow
Deadheading is very easy to do. As plants fade out of bloom, pinch or cut off the flower stem just above the first set of full, healthy leaves. Repeat with all the dead flowers on the plant.
The second bloom will also be longer.
Besides making plants look their best, there are other benefits of deadheading. Removing faded flowers will help prevent foliage from rotting. Wet petals that fall onto the foliage can cause rotting that leads to unsightly brown patches. Bulbous perennials such as lilies need a chance to replenish their bulbs in order to produce a good display of flowers next year. By cutting off flowers heads once the petals fall, the plant’s energy will be diverted away from seed production towards root production. After flowering, many plants produce an abundance of seeds. If allowed to fall, these can result seedlings you may not want. Snip off seedheads before they ripen and release their contents.
Usually deadheading can be done with finger tips or a scissors. If using a scissors or pruner, take precautions to prevent transferring disease-causing pathogens between plants and throughout a plant. Periodically clean the blades while pruning with a sterilizing solution. The traditional mixture for cleaning pruners is water and bleach (4 parts water to 1 part bleach). Another alternative is Lysol which is less corrosive than bleach. Antibacterial wipes that contain alcohol also provide a convenient way to keep blades clean. Deadheading is beneficial for the gardener and plants. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with your plants before you stand back and admire the results. It stimulates desired growth for new flowers and roots and prevents unwanted seedlings. Put on a tie-dye shirt, some music, and enjoy deadheading.

he North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature (STHL) was created by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1993. The STHL was established to:
Provide information to senior citizens on the legislative process and matters being considered by the General Assembly.
Promote citizen involvement and advocacy concerning aging issues before the General Assembly.
Assess the legislative needs of older citizens.
There is one delegate to the Senior Tar Heel Legislature from each of the 100 counties in North Carolina. Our delegate in Brunswick County is Audie Lowrimore.
“We are excited about our October meeting, since this is our silver anniversary year,” Lowrimore said. He is available to speak to any group about STHL and its work. You can reach him at (910) 6125859 or audiejoyce@atmc.net. To keep up with STHL’s work on senior issues, read the minutes every month at www.ncsthl.org.
“We are really excited about our five priorities,” Lowrimore said. The STHL is making progress on several fronts, including these changes recorded by June 11, 2018:
The North Carolina Home and
Community Care Block Grant (HCCBG) provides home and community-based services to the elderly, malnourished, homebound, dependent, and those who are socially and economically needy. About 10,000 seniors are on the HCCBG waiting list. About 1.2 million more are expected to turn 60 years of age by the year 2034. The STHL requested the General Assembly increase HCCBG funding by $7 million in recurring funds. Outcome: Increase in recurring federal funding: $3,934,394
Carolina. It has become a national best practice model for providing respite services to family members who are caring at home for a relative with dementia. The number of North Carolinians affected is about 160,000 and is expected to exceed 210,000 by 2025. Supporting families to assist their aging family members at home results in substantial savings in public funds. STHL recommends that the General Assembly increase funding by 10 percent annually. Outcome: No change.
Increase in recurring state funding: $1,000,000 Total: $4,934,394
There are 163 senior centers in 97 counties that provide programs and services to enhance the health and wellness of older adults. These services help elders remain independent, delaying costlier services or housing options. To maintain operation, senior centers get funding from sources that include federal, state, and local governments, special events, participant contributions, grants, and volunteers. STHL requested increased funding for senior centers by an additional $300,000 in recurring funds. Outcome: Four senior centers across the state received one-time funding.
Project C.A.R.E. (Caregiver Alternative to Running on Empty) was designed and tested in North
North Carolina’s APS Program must be strengthened and funded to respond to growth in the aging population, some of whom may become victims of abuse, neglect or exploitation. The State of North Carolina has not provided any funding for the APS Program since the 2010-2012 budget. The only funding for the APS Program is provided by county governments and a decreasing federal Social Services Block Grant. STHL recommends the General Assembly make available $5 million in recurring funds to meet the growing need for APS. Outcome: The budget bill added one APS and Guardianship Social Worker position to the Division of Aging and Adult Services. The budget bill also included $987,309 from the federal Social Service Block Grant for DSS to provide additional guardianship services. STHL, continued on page 39

his month’s reviews are from 2018 fiction bestseller lists. All three are available from the Brunswick County Library system.
Kristen Hannah’s The Great Alone is a saga of a family looking for a fresh start homesteading in Alaska’s beautiful yet perilous wilderness. Husband and father Ernt is a conflicted veteran, wife and mother Cora is an enabling, needy woman, and teenaged daughter Leni embodies resilience despite her parent’s toxic marriage. By far, the spectacular landscape is the best character. Nutshell review: The wounds of post-Vietnam America underpin this epic novel about conquering inner demons
and external challenges, but uneven plot and a disconnected denouement detracted from a favorite author’s latest. Former President Bill Clinton and James Patterson co-authored The President is Missing. Treachery, terrorism, and an interesting twist make this too-long book tolerable. Patterson’s expertise with plots is apparent and the verbose apologetics are Clinton’s hallmark. The timeliness of cyberterrorism is the only element that rings true—for the most part, the book is a fantasy wish list for the “perfect” president surviving a hail of bullets (wither art thou, Secret Service?). Nutshell review: Only in fiction could such a man—professional athlete, POW hero, tragic widower, fearless,
honest, and high-minded—become POTUS. We can only hope it happens someday. The High Tide Club by Mary Kay Andrews is crammed with nostalgia, wrongs righted, lost love found, and tension along romantic, legal, and racial lines. The characters (even minor ones) are well-formed and the plot movement plays out nicely as single-mom lawyer Brooke assists mysterious, nonagenarian Josephine in attaining peace of mind prior to her death. Making amends is not as easy as it seems, especially with a villain bent on malice. Nutshell review: This romantic mystery novel’s description of days gone by and relationship struggles has surprises enough to satisfy any reader.

The General Assembly created the N.C. Study Commission on Aging in 1987 to study and evaluate the delivery of services to older adults and recommend improvements. In 2011, this commission was repealed, creating an information gap between the older adults in need of assistance and organizations concerned with meeting those needs. The North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislature requests the North Carolina General Assembly reestablish the North Carolina Study Commission on Aging. Outcome: The Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services has designated a Subcommittee on Aging.
