Contributors Born and raised in Indiana, cover photographer Dave Kilgore graduated from Tri State College with a degree in engineering. He moved to Southern Maryland and then Northern Virginia, and after a career in the defense industry, Dave and his wife Brenda retired to Brunswick County in 2008. They are enjoying life at Brunswick Plantation. Dave has renewed his interest in photography and is president of the Coastal Carolina Camera Club. After retiring from leadership roles in engineering and information technology at a major confectionary manufacturer, Beth Klahre and her husband Jeff relocated to North Carolina. Beth has been enjoying reading on the beach, learning to play the harp, and writing human-interest stories. She is also a volunteer board member of the Friends of the Library of Oak Island and Southport. She lives in Southport with her husband and dog Betsy. Beth’s yoga tale begins on page 12. Pat Naughton and his family moved from Richmond, Va. to Winding River Plantation in Brunswick County in 2017 after Pat retired as a mechanical engineer at a nuclear power plant. He has been an avid gardener for 35 years and is a Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. Pat investigates Brunswick County’s pollinator garden on page 14. Donna Ruth Morgan volunteers with Friends of the Library in Southport and Oak Island, Boiling Spring Lakes Library Commission, Brunswick County Library Board of Trustees, and the N.C. Friends of the Public Library. She inherited a love of reading and shares that same enjoyment with her four children and three grandchildren. Look over some of Donna’s picks for crime and mystery reading on page 15. Holly Tate is a beach-loving North Carolina transplant who grew up on Long Island and never wants to be too far from the ocean. A self-proclaimed “grammar geek,” Holly recently retired from a career in marketing communications after writing, managing, and editing communications for more than 30 years. She loves to explore Brunswick County. Holly meets with a couple celebrating their 65th anniversary on page 16. Joan Leotta has been playing with words on page and stage since childhood in Pittsburgh. Her poetry and essays appear in many publications. Her four historical fiction novels feature strong women in times of U.S. wars, and her poetry chapbook, Languid Lusciousness with Lemon, was recently released. Her poem about summer peaches is on page 10 of this month’s Buzz.

ugust 21 is World Senior Citizens Day. The main purpose of World Senior Citizens Day is to raise awareness of the condition of older people and to support them throughout the aging process. And the day recognizes senior accomplishments, skills, and knowledge. World Senior Citizens Day reminds the government of its commitment to help seniors. In this respect, Audie Lowrimore represents Brunswick County seniors at the Senior Tar Heel Legislature. If you haven’t attended one of his talks explaining the work of this important group, check your calendar or see page 11 to learn more. Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. also exists to promote the well-being and enhance the quality of life for all senior adults in Brunswick County. BSRI advocates for programs and delivers services that sustain seniors’ independence and participation in the community. The Brunswick Senior Buzz spreads the word abut BSRI programs and services and community efforts for the benefit of seniors. This is your Buzz! Do you have an item that may be of interest to seniors in Brunswick County? Celebrate Senior Citizens Day by letting us know so we can pass it on. As the Brunswick Center at Calabash celebrates its one-year anniversary, it is my pleasure to announce that beginning in August, our full-service kitchen will begin preparing meals on site for lunches and for Meals on Wheels for those who are homebound. This accomplishment will allow us to serve meals of the highest quality and allow BSRI and its team of volunteers to more efficiently care for the needs of the Calabash, Sunset Beach, Carolina Shores, and the southern Ash communities. Another milestone is the opening of our new BSRI Thrift Store in Shallotte. We are excited for the opportunity to expand into a new area, and the proceeds from
Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO
Shallotte thrift sales will help serve more seniors. I’d like to send a special thanks to Mike McGurn and the entire Calabash and Shallotte Thrift Store staff for their heroic efforts to get the new store up and running. See more details about the thrift store on page 7. LETTER, continued on page 6

LETTER, cont’d. from page 5
Every year, July 1 represents the close of the old fiscal year and the beginning of the new fiscal year. I am pleased to report that BSRI successfully completed Fiscal Year 2018/2019 on time and on budget. The organization is in good financial standing and is positioned to continue to provide excellent programs and services for many years to come. Thank you to our donors, to the Area Agency on Aging, and to Brunswick County staff and commissioners for assuring that the organization is properly funded and our seniors are supported. The end of the fiscal year also represents the time that we reflect and measure the efforts made to serve the community:
Our Case Management Services served over 2,300 seniors through the Senior Health Insurance Information Program, with a total
Our Prescription Drug Assistance Program helped Brunswick County seniors save more than $2,400,000 over the cost of retail prescription drug prices.
Our Meals on Wheels program served over 130,000 meals, representing a 40 percent increase.
And the new Brunswick Center at Calabash signed up over 2,000 participants in less than a year.
I am deeply grateful to all those who worked so hard to ensure that our seniors are cared for and served with the best we have to offer. Here’s to Fiscal Year 2019/2020!
Your Devoted Servant,
Jim

Meet Bonnie
Uncovering the Passion Behind Volunteering Interview with Bonnie Bridges by Lillith Camp
Q: How did you know you wanted to volunteer delivering meals? Bridges: My mother and mother-in-law both received Meals on Wheels and I know how important the program is for both the recipients and the families. Q: Both your mother and mother in law received meals. Can you tell us what it’s like to be a family member of someone receiving meals? Bridges: It is so important. It is nice to have someone checking in on your loved one when you’re not there. The food is really important, but the contact they had with their volunteers was amazing. Q: You are new to our volunteer team. What has impacted you most thus far? Bridges: How easily the recipients accept me and enjoy talking to me. I also enjoy talking to them! It has really humbled me. Q: Is there anything you would say to someone who is thinking of becoming a Meals on Wheels volunteer? Bridges: It doesn’t take long out of your day. It is worth your while and you will really enjoy the people you are serving. Without volunteers, there would be no program, and this program is vital in the community.
Bonnie Bridges is a new Meals on Wheels driver for the Brunswick Center at Shallotte. She delivers meals to Ash. She moved to Brunswick County with her husband Jerry two years ago from Sanford. Bonnie enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Healthy Bites
Let’s Get Peachy! By Lydia Arnold, Intern
P
eaches are a yummy treat that are perfect for summer. Besides that juicy sweetness you get from the bite of a peach, they also have lots of health benefits. Peaches are a stone fruit like cherries, plums, or nectarines. Stone fruits have antiobesity and anti-inflammatory properties that decrease the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. Peaches are also packed full of vitamin C which is great for your immune system. Our immunity decreases as we age, making us more susceptible to illness. So it’s important to eat fruits like peaches boost your vitamin C intake.

Peach Man takes over the corner at the gas station at SC 57 and 904 on Memorial Day. Under a blue awning, he lines up paper bags of orange and red fruit (at $6 per bag) on an old blue picnic table. As summer progresses, wave after wave of different varieties fill the bags. Each week I ask as I hand him six one-dollar bills, “What's the name of this kind?” Each week, he shakes his white-haired head at me, “It's enough that they be juicy and sweet.” Out of his jeans pocket, he pulls a pocketknife. unfolds it, and with one hand, slices an entire peach into tasty little wedges. The slices lay like petals in his palm. I pick a slice; pop it into my mouth. As soon as that bit of peach touches my tongue it sends shockwaves of sugar to my brain. As I murmur, “ummmm” a driblet of juice escapes my mouth and races to the edge of my chin. Peach man smiles. With his other hand, he pockets my six, one-dollar bills. I pick up my bag of delicious, though anonymous peaches. “See you next week,” we say, saluting each other. So it goes, each week until autumn's apples replace peaches at the stand. ~ Joan Leotta

lear your mind. Breathe. Exhale when you are ready. Think of the power you have inside your body. It just needs to be released. That’s instruction from Kevin Whiteheart, the newest yoga instructor at the Brunswick Center at Southport. Whiteheart has just started teaching two classes: Yoga for Healthy Bones and Chair Yoga. He arrives highly qualified with a teaching certificate from Seaside Yoga in Wilmington, awarded after 200 hours of training. He has ten years of teaching experience.
There are many benefits to yoga, according to Whiteheart. Good posture is one of them, as is building healthy bones. Whiteheart knows this first-hand. In 1999, he injured his hip while

running. His doctor recommended cortisone shots. Whiteheart sought alternatives. Stretching was recommended, so he took a yoga class at a gym, After just one class he was hooked. He quickly went from student to teacher, holding evening sessions after long days as a city attorney.
Eventually Whiteheart learned he had osteoporosis and severe bone loss. Yoga helped regrow his bones, he says. Backed by scientific evidence, yoga can increase bone
density and be an effective part of osteoporosis treatment. Whiteheart experienced an 11.7% increase in bone mass. As with many people with disabilities, it was the mundane things in life he wanted back: bending down to pick something up or reaching overhead. Now, retired at age 58, he is able to do inversions—headstands —with ease.
Chair Yoga, intended for those with limited mobility, will “strengthen the connective tissues in hands, reduce burning in the back, and stretch leg muscles to create more space for the sciatic nerve, thus relieving pain,” according to Whiteheart. Several of his Chair Yoga students find it difficult to get up and down. Several have titanium knees and ankles. Several of them are 80 or older. Helene Remer has trouble
In Our Centers standing, so she thought seated yoga might be the thing for her. And after just one class, Remer was pleased “to get my knee up, something I have not been able to do for a long while,” she says. Dee Azar came to chair yoga to “get moving and ease depression.” Ronni Rose teamed up with a friend to try out the new classes. Rose attended Chair Yoga and her friend attended Yoga for Healthy Bones. Now they are comparing notes. Rose says, “Fridays are perfect for these new classes!” Shirley Barman proudly says, “I feel stronger through my stomach after only one class.”
Whiteheart advises that there is more to yoga than the physical changes that result from practicing yoga. “Yoga helps practitioners feel younger and energized,” Whiteheart says. Whiteheart always encourages his yoga students. He recites an old yoga truism: If you practice yoga one day a week, it will change your mind. If you practice yoga two days a week, it will change your body. If you practice yoga three days a week, it will change your life.
Lillian Williams was excited to learn about the new classes. Not new to yoga, she was looking for more challenge. But for her, it’s more than yoga. “I have found new friends and I love that!”
Savanasa. It’s the final pose of every yoga class. One of deep restoration. The students leave the gym relaxed and closer to the truths of life, growing in mind and body.
Steve Womble speaks highly of the Southport Center. “It is an asset to Brunswick County,” he says.
Whiteheart concludes, “Yoga has changed my life. It can change yours, too.”

Joannie and Bill Hoyle: 65 Years and Counting By Holly Tate
S
hallotte art instructor Joannie Neary met the love of her life when she was 7 years old.
Bill Hoyle was 10. He and Joannie crossed paths one summer at Davis Park pool in Providence, R.I., where they both grew up. Joannie’s aunt lived two doors down from the Hoyles; Bill was the neighborhood paperboy, so he had plenty of time to get acquainted with the Neary family and see Joannie when she spent summers with her aunt.
But Joannie and Bill attended different high schools in Providence and lost touch after graduation. Then fate stepped in again, providing a chance meeting at a local carnival where Bill was working part time. Bill attended New England Technical College and studied radio and television electronics. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951, serving as an airborne radio operator during and after the Korean War. A career in navigation communication with the Federal Aviation Administration followed. Bill courted Joannie from overseas, using a vigorous campaign of letters to win her heart. He even sent her an engagement ring by mail. When Joannie went to the post office to collect the ring, she was so excited she kissed the postman! Bill was home on leave when he and Joannie married in Providence on August 14, 1954. Just five months after the wedding, Bill was involved in a horrific plane crash during a training mission. But his future didn’t go down in flames. Bill’s destiny was with Joannie. An art instructor at Shallotte, Joannie Neary painted this portrait of her husband Bill. The Nearys are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary this month.
They raised two sons and a daughter in Rhode Island before moving to Ocean Isle Beach in 2004.
While Joannie was a stay-at-home mom, a premarriage secretarial job at Rhode Island School of Design surrounded her with art and creativity, helping her discover her lifelong passion for art. Today, Joannie is a successful painter, working in oils, pastels, watercolor, and charcoal. She is also an enthusiastic scrimshaw artist who wants to revive interest in the delicate skill. Joannie teaches art at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte and other locations. Portraits are her specialty. This month, Joannie and Bill Hoyle celebrate 65 years of marriage. With a wink, Bill credits the success of their long partnership to Joannie’s cooking. Both point to the benefit of lots of laughter throughout their marriage. And common interests like music, photography, and their faith also continue to bring them close. They have eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Read All About It

S
uspense and atmosphere create page-turning reads this month. Choose one of these crime or mystery novels for a fun August book. All books are available at Brunswick County libraries. Ruth Ware is called “today’s Agatha Christie” and her 2018 thriller The Death of Mrs. Westaway lives up to that designation. The plot builds in momentum with deft clues on the path to a terrifying conclusion. The main character is a lonely, impoverished tarot-card reader introduced to family at an ominous country home (complete with creepy attics and cavernous cellars). A menacing housekeeper, portents of nursery-rhyme magpies, and occult imaginings add to the suspense. While wanting the tension to resolve, I hated that the storyline ended. Nutshell Review: Only lacks a musical score for the scariest parts. Last year’s The Ruin by Dervla McTiernan will appeal to devotees of crime fiction with its dark, disturbing plot. A cold case from
early in Detective Cormac Reilly’s career haunts him and ties into a current, seeminglyunrelated crime. The main protagonists are compelling; the author intends to write a series, and the supporting characters are lightly sketched. Galway and its history are the perfect setting for this moody mystery, although leaps between past and present to advance the action create some uneven pacing. Nutshell Review: A slow-burner that satisfies cravings for a deliciously sinister story. A decision by teenagers caused a tragic death, leading to two decades of secret-keeping in Someone Knows by Lisa Scottoline (2019). Alas, what is billed as mustread domestic suspense does not live up to its potential. An introduction in the present, flipping to the past until the finale, multiple points of view, and choppy chapters create a headspinner. The author throws in light moments to balance the heavy issues
explored, but the twists seem manufactured and the ending is disappointing. Nutshell Review: Clunky narrative with shock value artificially added. The Au Pair by Emma Rous (2019) is a psychological, noir-type thriller. Moody atmosphere and dual storylines past and present tantalizingly reveal the characters’ motives. Suspense swirls around village superstitions and menace threatens at every turn. The second half is a bit clunky and the denouement a tad incredible, which distract from the novel’s overall excellence. Nutshell review: Deep family secrets, a haunting setting, and mysterious characters put this squarely in the Gothic realm. For bargain summer reading, check out Friends of the Library used books sales. Most books are $1 or less. Shop continuous inside-thelibrary book sales during business hours at the Rourke Reading Room in Shallotte, Leland Branch, and Southwest Branch in Ocean Isle. In the Garden

T
here’s a buzz in the Brunswick County Botanical Garden. It’s coming from a section called the Pollinator Garden. This beautiful garden features over 75 varieties of flowering plants that attract pollinators. Many of the plants will be flowering in August. “You can sometimes hear the pollinators at work in the garden and the drum of hummingbirds darting in and out,” garden curator Amanda Kiel said. Hummingbirds are not alone in the garden choir. “Recently, the closer you got to the blooming crape myrtles, the louder the hum of bees hard at work,” Kiel said. Crape myrtles are not native to coastal North Carolina, but provide lots of pollen. Kiel is a Brunswick County Extension Master Gardener Volunteer. For the past two years she and her team of four have tended to the garden during the growing season. Three more volunteers join the team to propagate plants from the fall to spring.
This sunny garden demonstrates
what a pollinator-friendly environment might look like. It’s planted with seasons of beautiful flowering annuals and perennials. These were selected to provide habitat, larvae food, and nectar or pollen. Both native and non-native plants are included with emphasis on different shapes and colors of flowers as pollen and nectar sources. Water is provided in a birdbath and waterfall to aid pollinators with reproduction and drinking. “We hope to encourage gardeners to join our efforts and support pollinators by duplicating some of this environment in their own yards,” Kiel said.
So why are pollinators so important that they get their own garden? Pollinators are mainly insects that move pollen from male flower parts to female flower parts. This process completes fertilization resulting in the production of seeds, fruit, and young plants. Pollinators include bees, moths, butterflies, other insects, and birds. It is estimated that three-fourths of our food crops are courtesy of pollinators’ work and without them our diets would be
severely limited. Insect pollinators, such as bees, are vulnerable to some pesticides. Using less pesticide is always preferable but if you must, horticultural oils, insecticidal soaps, and B.T. or Bacillus thuringiensis (biological control for caterpillars) can be used. Spray at dusk or very early in the morning when pollinator activity is at a minimum and there is plenty of time for spray to dry. Dusts and Bayer systemics are more harmful.
Low-maintenance perennials are good to start with. Nothing beats mountain mint (pycnanthemum muticum) for attracting pollinators. Coneflowers (echinacea purpurea) and rudbeckia (rudbeckia fulgida 'Goldsturm') are close seconds. Native shrubs that attract our pollinators include titi (cyrilla racemiflora), sweetpepperbush (clethra), or St. John’s wort (hypericum). Other shrubs popular with pollinators are lantana, vitex, and butterfly bush. Add annuals such as zinnias, coleus and salvias for bursts of color. Tithonia (or Pollinators, continued on page 17

Erma volunteers her time as one of the Line Dancing instructors here at the Brunswick Center at Calabash. She came to America in 1997 from Germany, where she was born. Before coming to America, she was an active ballroom dancer. She met & married her husband, who sadly is not a dancer. Being that a partner is not needed, she became interested in line dancing & found herself in California ready to learn how it was done. It is fun & great exercise for both the body & the brain. Having lived & taught in many places, she has found that it has kept her young & involved. Come join Erma on Thursdays at 10:30!
We want you to know that you are not ALONE! We are here for you and want you to receive the support you need to be the very best you that you can be. Below are a list of Support Groups that are provided at the Brunswick Center at Calabash. The professionals are here for guidance, but here’s your chance to meet others who are going through the similar matters. MEMORY LOSS SUPPORT GROUP: 1st Tuesday at 2:00
Anne Rostan, Support Group Facilitator, has been a Dementia Specialist for multiple years. She is here to help you cope with the early stages of memory loss and caring for a loved one suffering from memory loss (bring them along with you). You are encouraged to bring along any questions/tips you may have for Anne or other participants. CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP: 2nd Wednesday at 2:00 Ellen Cameron, Retired Social Worker, will be here to facilitate the group. Being a caregiver can feel isolating, but you are not alone. Come gain some insight and/or provide some to those who may need some help along the way. DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP: 3rd Wednesday at 1:00 Diana Jones, Registered Nurse, and Patti Ellis, Registered Dietician, are here to provide you with tips with dealing and thriving with diabetes. Both ladies have years of background in diabetes education, and would love to help you any way they can.

I
f you’re planning a summer vacation, you already know that there’s a lot to do before you leave. There are passports to renew, suitcases to pack, and an itinerary to plan. We want you to have the most relaxing vacation possible, so before you go don’t forget to:
Look into Medicare coverage outside the U.S.
Think about getting additional health care coverage.
If you have Original Medicare, your health care services and supplies are covered when you’re in the U.S. (which includes Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands). But if you plan to travel overseas or outside the U.S. (including to Canada or Mexico), it’s
if it includes coverage outside the U.S.
important to know that in most cases, Medicare won’t pay for health care services or supplies you get outside the U.S. (except in rare cases). That doesn’t mean you have to travel without coverage. There are several ways you can get health coverage outside the U.S.:
If you have a Medigap policy, check your policy to see
If you get your health care from another Medicare health plan (rather than original Medicare), check with your plan to see if they offer coverage outside the U.S.
Purchase a travel insurance policy that includes health coverage.
In all three cases, check with your policy or plan before traveling and make sure you understand what’s covered outside the U.S. Taking the time to plan your health care coverage before you travel abroad will help you have an enjoyable and relaxing trip. ~ Medicare Blog June 2019

Volunteer Spotlight We are so grateful for all of our wonderful volunteers. So many go beyond the call of duty, so allow us to highlight a few standouts. Meet Linda! Linda is one of our most dynamic volunteers. Linda’s mother was from New Bern, and after vacationing for years, she had always dreamed of retiring to NC. After marrying her childhood sweetheart, raising a family of four, and having a multifaceted career in drafting, kitchen design, and early childhood education, Linda and Rick, her husband of 50+ years, decided to make the move. When they arrived from Connecticut three years ago, their first tasks were to find a church, and to join the senior center so they could be sure to meet people and get involved in the community.
Boat Excursions! Thanks to all who joined us for the Big M Cruise!
Linda soon started a prayer shawl ministry and also met with other ladies who love to sing. Along with Louise Harrison, she formed the Leland Larks choral group. She has been an integral member of the Advisory Committee since its inception at the original Leland center. As a committee member, Linda helps to brainstorm activities, plans and executes events and is a part of the collaborative effort to ever improve our center. Linda has demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the needs of our center and the larger community. She has managed a clothing drive that supports seniors and community members since before Hurricane Florence. You might have seen her spearheading the fundraiser that acquired an industrial grill for our center. Or, maybe you’ve attended one of her sleep mat seminars on Tues. at 1p. There, she and Debbie Borgia collect and process plastic grocery bags that they and other volunteers crochet into sleep mats for the homeless. If you haven’t seen her smiling face at any of those places, maybe you enjoy dancing as much as she does. She teaches the beginner line dancing class every Friday at 11a. After learning 24 years ago, she enjoys the fun, exercise, and constant chance to learn something new. Linda told us she thanks God everyday for his many blessings, one of which is The Brunswick Center at Leland and all the wonderful people she has met here. WE LOVE YOU, LINDA!

What Are the Dog Days of Summer? The Dog Days aren‟t just when your dog starts panting on a sweltering summer day. These days once coincided with the year‟s heliacal (“at sunrise”) rising of the Dog Star, Sirius. Ancient folks thought that the “combined heat” of Sirius and the Sun caused midsummer‟s swelter. The rising of Sirius does not actually affect the weather, but for the ancient Egyptians, Sirius appeared just before the Nile River‟s flood season. They used Sirius as a “watchdog” for that event. Because it also coincided with a time of extreme heat, the connection with hot, sultry weather was made for all of time! According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days of summer are traditionally the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11 which coincide with the dawn rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. This is soon after the Summer Solstice, which of course also indicates that the worst summer heat will soon set in.
The Dog Star, Sirius —The Old Farmer’s Almanac for Kids tells us all about the Dog Star, Sirius! Here are some of the most important facts: Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, if you don’t count the Sun. Under the right conditions, it can even be seen with the naked eye during the day. Sirius is one star in a group of stars that form the constellation Canis Major, meaning “Greater Dog.” It’s no surprise, then, that the nickname of this big, bold star is Dog Star. Learn how to find the Dog Star in the night sky. Source: https://www.almanac.com/content/what-are-dog-dayssummer.
