Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO, and WECT News Anchor Frances Weller welcome fan donations for Brunswick County seniors with the Fran’s Fans program.

Happy August! What started as a temperate spring has translated into a hot summer with record heat indexes for our area. Soon we will witness the annual exodus of tourists and the commencement of school and other fall activities. With this year’s summer heat, we experienced record requests for box fans from people trying to stay cool. Fortunately we got a boost from the “Fran’s Fans” community initiative. With this program, Frances Weller and WECT Channel 6 host a drive at Walmart to take donations of box fans. Most fans could be purchased for around $16 and then donated to local senior centers. This program had only been offered in New

Hanover County until WECT reached out to BSRI, offering to replicate the program for our county. I am pleased to report that those efforts yielded more than 240 donated box fans! I wish to express my deepest appreciation to Fran, the WECT team, the Leland Walmart, generous members of the community and BSRI staff, and volunteers who helped to procure and distribute these much-needed resources. We are just past the midpoint of the hurricane season for our region. The National Weather Service is predicting an average active season. We encourage FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

anyone who might have difficulty evacuating, for health or other reasons, to register with Brunswick County Emergency Services at www.bruswickcountync.gov. Once on the website, select Departments from the menu bar, then select Emergency Services. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the Special Needs Registration (highlighted in red) and fill out the form. If you have trouble using a computer or need other assistance, please ask a senior center or site manager to assist. In the event of an emergency, personnel will be sent to your home to assist with evacuation.

Sawyer and Associates have created an initial floor plan for the new Calabash Area Senior Center. It is estimated that it will take about 300 more days to design a renovation plan for the 12,000-square-foot structure. Upon completion of the design phase, a bid process to select a qualified contractor to complete the construction will be the next step. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Calabash area center. We must raise $100,000 to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or have interest serving

on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe.

Masonry work on the New Brunswick Center at Leland exterior is almost complete and the new parking lot and storm water pond are also nearly finished. Currently the project is two weeks behind schedule due to weather delays. The builder anticipates catching up and finishing the project by the December 2016 deadline. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Leland Center. The estimated total value of needed items and cash contributions are around $150,000. So far, $130,000 has been raised. Please help us get over the finish line. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. Stay cool out there!

Your Devoted Servant, Jim

Seafood has always been the lifeblood of Calabash. We’re excited about the new senior center in Calabash (story, page 10) and wanted to highlight the Calabash seafood industry on our cover. Buzz reporter Linda Walters headed down to the Calabash docks to snap a photo of the shrimp boats that rest there after a hard day’s work. Read more Calabash stories on pages 9 and 13.

BSRI News Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) is the recipient of a grant award in the amount of $30,000 from the Cannon Foundation, Inc., to be used for furnishings and equipment for the newly constructed Leland Senior Center. The Cannon Foundation, Inc., is

part of the philanthropic legacy of Charles A. Cannon, industrialist and humanitarian, who was President and Chairman of Cannon Mills Company for more than half a century. The Foundation continues Mr. Cannon's philanthropy through funding in healthcare, higher education, human services and community.

The inaugural Sock Hop was an amazing success! A huge Thank You to all who came out to support the event, especially the staff and volunteers, the amazing Mike's Garage Band, the totally yummy Ryan Gibbs Catering, and many new friends. Congratulations to the winners of the four day passes to Disney, the 50/50 drawing, and the special drawing for a gift card. Everyone had a blast! Mike's Garage Band kept the dance floor packed. We expect to make this an annual event to help raise funds for our senior participants.

This grant award will go a long way in ensuring the rapidly growing number of seniors in Brunswick County communities have the services and resources they need. BSRI anticipates scheduling a grand opening ceremony for the new Brunswick Center at Leland in early 2017.

Volunteers

By Linda Walters

M

any homebound adults 60 years or older in Brunswick County cannot prepare a hot meal for themselves. Luckily, Meals on Wheels is there to help. Emory Saghy, Jr., is the youngest of four children of Emory and Madeline Saghy (both deceased) of Baltimore. Emory began his career in Baltimore as a draftsman for Westinghouse Electric and later moved to California to work in engineering documentation for major defense subcontractors. In 1994, Emory and his wife Jean left California for Shallotte, NC. Saghy worked 10 years in contractor sales for Shallotte Electric and in 2005, opened a new branch of City Electric Supply in Shallotte. In 2009, he retired. But after an active career and extensive travel, he wanted something meaningful and useful to do. He stopped by the Shallotte Senior Center and met Anne Gass, center director, who told him about the need for volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels. “I served as a volunteer driver for three years, delivering meals to homebound seniors,” Saghy said. “BSRI staff provided guidance and instruction every step of the way. I shadowed an experienced volunteer until I was comfortable going out on my own. “If someone is considering volunteering as a driver for Meals on Wheels, I strongly recommend it,” Saghy said. “My greatest satisfaction at the end of the day is knowing that I have made contact with someone who may not have any contact other than me, that I helped make someone smile, and that I aided in helping a senior stay independent and in their own home. We gave to each other and that makes volunteering rewarding,” Saghy said. Saghy is now a paid part-time driver for BSRI delivering meals from the Boliva government complex cafeteria to the Supply, Shallotte, Calabash and Ash senior centers.

Interested in volunteering? Please contact Volunteer Coordinator Sarah Powell at (910) 754-2300 ext. 1028, or spowell@bsrinc.org.

SHIIP: Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program

SHIIP is Not Just for Seniors By M. René Tarquinio, LBSW

T

he services of SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, are not only for people aged 65 and older. SHIIP also provides free counseling about Medicare to people on Medicare due to a disability. Before you can receive Medicare due to a disability, you must have received Social Security Disability Insurance for a period of time. In most situations, before an individual can receive SSDI, a date of onset must be established. In addition, a five-month waiting period must be served before a person is entitled to Social Security disability cash payments. Once you have been entitled to disability for 24 months after that waiting period (5 months plus 24 months equals 29 months total) and you are younger than 65,

you are eligible for Medicare disability if you meet at least one of the following three criteria: 

You have been entitled to Social Security disability benefits for 24 months. This includes widows, widowers, and children who receive benefits because of disability.

You receive a disability annuity from the railroad retirement board and meet certain conditions.

You have worked long enough in a government job where Medicare taxes were paid and you meet the requirements of the Social Security disability program.

If you have permanent kidney failure, you are eligible for Medicare at any age. This is true if you receive maintenance dialysis or a kidney transplant and you are either

eligible for or receive monthly benefits under Social Security or the railroad retirement system, or you are the dependent child or spouse (including a divorced spouse) of a worker (living or deceased) who has worked long enough under Social Security or in a government job where Medicare taxes were paid. You can apply for disability benefits at your local Social Security office or online at www.socialsecurity.gov or call 800-772-1213 or 800-325-0778 (TTY) to make an appointment to file an application. For answers to any of your other Medicare questions contact SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program. SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance and can assist anyone with questions about Medicare and Part D coverage information and enrollment. For more information, contact (910)754-2300.

Left: Stuart Cleveland was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Above: Cleveland can often be found at BSRI’s Calabash Senior Site.

By Barbara L. Weber

S

tuart Cleveland loved to fly. It all started when a man sold him a five-dollar airplane ride in Mansfield, Pa. when he was a young fellow. He was hooked. Later, after two years of college, Cleveland became a United States Air Force pilot, realizing his dream. He served his country for 21 years. Cleveland’s missions were to refuel B-52 airplanes while flying over Spain and the United States during the Cold War. The flights were dangerous, including experiences with Agent Orange. He needed to keep the airplane steady in the air while refueling another airplane mid-flight. “It was something that just wasn’t talked about, just done,” Cleveland said. After retirement, with two feet

on the ground, Cleveland worked as a statistician for 10 years at the state employment office in Harrisburg, Pa. He lived in Camp Hill, Pa. from 1975 until 1994.

had been killed in Afghanistan. Brian’s parents were on holiday in Alaska, requiring the Army to call distant police to contact the parents with the grievous news.

Retirement gave him more time for golf, a favorite pastime, and ice dancing with his wife, Mary.

Happy days came back again this past May, when the Cleveland children visited at The Village at Calabash to fix up around their dad’s home. Cleveland uses oxygen daily for pulmonary fibrosis, so he was not planning to go to his granddaughter’s wedding in Virginia. But his children wouldn’t take no for an answer— everyone insisted. They drove him to and from Virginia and wheeled him in a wheelchair for the family’s beautiful occasion. It was a happy celebration.

Cleveland was married to Mary for nearly 58 years until her death. They had four children, two sons and two daughters, now scattered about in Michigan, Colorado, and England. One daughter died of cancer at 50. Cleveland speaks lovingly of his family with seven grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. A shock came to the family on Stuart and Mary’s 55th wedding anniversary. On that day, news arrived that their 21-year-old grandson, Brian, an Army medic,

Cleveland is a welcomed participant at the Calabash Senior Site. He also worships at St. Brendan Church.

Ginny Lassiter is the owner of Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash. This a large eclectic gallery offers activities for children and adults, professionals and amateurs, locals, and visitors. Lassiter often leads the gallery’s Creative After Hours events, where locals and visitors (who aren’t necessarily artists) have a chance to create their own pieces of art in a casual and fun atmosphere. A native of Wilson, NC, Lassiter has lived in the Ocean Isle Beach area for almost 40 years. She has always been a creative soul. She’s a potter, she paints, she sketches, she designs fabrics. She graduated from East Carolina with a major in art and an emphasis in Interior Design. Currently Lassiter works most often in acrylic, creating abstracts and the occasional landscape. “I’ve

been fortunate to study with folks like Sterling Edwards, Joe DiGiulio, and Mike Rooney,” she says, “and they’ve really opened my eyes to shapes and textures. I love the whole process of painting abstracts!” Lassiter’s work has been featured on the cover of Carolina Arts and ArtGuide magazines. Joan Kinney and her husband Chuck opened Boiling Spring Lakes MiniStorage in 1990. She had previously worked at the U.S. Army Headquarters and at the University of Houston Law School helping to establish the National College of District. Later she worked for Becon Construction Company in Houston and Oklahoma, and even spent some time in Evanston, Wyoming. Kinney served as mayor of Boiling Spring Lakes from 2000 until 2012. She previously operated the Olde Brunswick Store next door to the Mini-Storage. Born in New Orleans, Kinney was “a true NOLA girl,” she said. The Kinneys moved here when Chuck was transferred, in 1985. They had family nearby and that sealed the deal. Kinney continues to be of service as a volunteer at Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center and has served on some of their committees. She helps make baby layettes for Camp LeJeune military families. And she continues to help the Brunswick County Board of Elections, participate in exercise classes, and travel with senior groups and to her hometown of New Orleans. —Kathleen Boyle

Sunday, August 21, is National Senior Citizen Day, a day set aside to recognize the contributions of older people to our society. Here are six things to do on Senior Citizens Day—and beyond—to honor the seniors in your life: Give them a hug! It does wonders for the soul. Establish a fun routine that is shared with family and friends (movies, games, outings). Start a family history project—share memories/experiences of what happened “way back then.” Skype with tech-savvy seniors or chat via FaceTime. (Did you know that 6 out of 10 seniors go online?) No computer? Go “old school” and pick up the phone. Make small talk—even a few minutes can lift someone’s spirit! Practice random acts of kindness. Visit or talk with seniors when they’re not expecting it. Drop by, bring a game, or take them out to a surprise lunch. NC Senior Tar Heel Legislature Presentation, Monday, August 15, 11am. The NCSTHL was created to provide information to senior citizens on the legislative process and matters being considered by the North Carolina General Assembly. Each county’s delegate (and alternate) works tirelessly to improve the quality of life for our senior citizens by establishing priorities that are advocated before the North Carolina General Assembly. Come meet your delegate, Brian Flanagan, and alternate, Audie Lowrimore, and learn more about senior issues being presented before our legislature!

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm

New Hours — During August, our Exercise Room will be open 8am to 4pm. Zumba Gold classes are back! Dance to the music that moves you in Kathryn’s classes on Mondays and Thursdays at 3pm!

January 15, 1929, Atlanta, GA, a male child was born who would, years later: become a Baptist minister, PhD, and Civil Rights Activist; play a pivotal role in (a) ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens, and (b) the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965; establish the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; and win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 among other honors. August 28, 1963, Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC. This African-American Baptist minister, activist, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights movement gave a unforgettable speech known as “I Have a Dream.” This discourse would later be proclaimed the greatest oration of the 20th Century and recognized by millions of people. Martin Luther April 4, 1968, Memphis, TN. This great leader, humanitarian, and advocate of non-violent civil disobedience to affect change was assassinated at age 39 by James Earl Ray. Ray was captured, convicted of murder, King, Jr., 1964 sentenced to 99 years, and died in the Tennessee State Penitentiary. Martin was survived by his wife, Coretta Activist & Leader Scott King, and his four children: Martin Luther, III, Dexter Scott, Yolanda Denise, and Bernice Albertine.

In celebration of National Senior Citizen Day, we thought you would enjoy this classic poem by Jenny Joseph who offers her unique insight into what being a senior means!

Get Crafty! It’s hot outside so come to the Senior Center for some cool crafts! Classes are limited to 6 people and registration is required by 4pm the Friday before the class. (If you miss the deadline, call us anyway—there may still be a space open or there may have been a cancellation.) Class fees/additional supplies (if any) are noted below.

Warning by Jenny Joseph When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick the flowers in other people’s gardens And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sausage at a go Or only bread and pickle for a week And hoard pens and pencils and beer mats and things in boxes. But now we must have clothes that keep us dry And pay our rent and not swear in the street And set a good example for the children. We must have friends to dinner and read the papers. But maybe I ought to practice a little now? So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple. Please email your poems to us at agass@bsrinc.org. We’ll publish your poem in the Senior Buzz and post it on our poetry board at the center. Share your talent—make someone’s day!

(Future?) Panic Anxiety Attack Seminar Panic anxiety attacks can strike without warning and are not in proportion to the true situation, may be unrelated to what is happening at the time, and can be mild to debilitating. Presenter Mari-Lou Wong-Chong founded the Panic Anxiety Attack Support Group (in Pittsburgh, PA) which ran for 9 years until she moved to Brunswick County 10 years ago. She also has many professional and civic credits to her name and is very active in her community. If you would like to attend this helpful seminar, please call us at 754-2300 x1001. If there is enough interest, we will schedule it.

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Meet Our Instructors! This month get to know Tai Chi Instructor Dean Sutzer.

—An NC Certified Senior Center of Excellence— Anne Gass, Center Director

Sifu Dean Sutzer has always had a natural interest in martial arts, but actively began studying at age 12 due, in part, to several influences: (1) the ever-popular Kung Fu movies; (2) a “little incentive” from an unfortunate experience with a neighborhood bully (who was swiftly “dealt with” by Dean’s older brother); and (3) the fact that basketball just wasn’t his “thing.” Looking for an activity that offered it “all,” Dean embraced the multi-faceted benefits of martial arts: self-defense, fitness, personal growth, socialization, and whole body-mind-spirit integration. As a result, he’s been learning for 47 years and teaching for 44! His Tai Chi classes at Shallotte and Southport offer seniors those same benefits through slow, deliberate movements and a self-paced format. New neural pathways are eventually forged leading to improved mental and physical health. Students develop muscle memory and hone motor skills which increase the quality of everyday life. Patience and calmness are welcomed benefits, too! Dean says the key is simply “getting out there and trying!” His classes integrate the 5,000 year old Chinese posture/breathing practice of QiGong (pronounced chee kung) as well as acupressure (use of pressure points) which helps ease aches, pains, and tension. Dean loves teaching seniors because they have great attention spans, listen attentively, comprehend well, and actually put what they learn into practice. Everyone who has “been on this earth” for a long time has limitations/special needs and seniors understand the importance of living with and/or overcoming those limitations. Dean has taught at the Shallotte and Southport Senior Centers for about 5 years. He offers private lessons and group classes through his studio in Calabash and Parks and Recreation in North Myrtle Beach. Classes include close-quarters combat, Samurai Sword, Karate, and, of course, Tai Chi. Dean wants you to know he appreciates the opportunity to enrich your lives and sends a heart-felt “thank you” to all his awesome students (ages 5 to 87—and beyond!). Congratulations to Southport student Richard Carlson who is the first senior student to be certified by Sufi Dean Sutzer as a Tai Chi Instructor (Crane Level). Great job, Richard!

Shallotte students in Monday’s class execute familiar Tai Chi movements, but add weights to build strength and endurance. “Swallow’s Tail” is a graceful movement found in the Earth Form.

The first movement of the “Dancing Bear” (found in the Earth Form) builds arm, core, and leg strength by using the students’ own body as the “weight.” Photo by Margarete O’Leary

The second movement of the “Dancing Bear” adds focus on strengthening the back for better posture in addition to core and leg strength. Photo by Margarete O’Leary

Shallotte’s Tuesday and Thursday classes strengthen the body without added weights. Students put a “hand on the wall” and push to develop wrist flexibility.

One of the more difficult movements is “Crane on the Rock” (Longevity Form) which engages many of the body’s muscles at once and commands acute attention to balance.

“The Serpent” (Animal QiGong) helps eliminate toxins in the body by massaging the kidneys with a gentle twisting movement which also helps increase spinal mobility.
