Greetings as we stand on the verge of seasonal changes: the welcome sight of birds heading south, thermometers leveling off, and the holiday season on the horizon. BSRI has enjoyed another busy month as it positions itself to enter an equally busy fall. This particular fall will represent a marque moment as we expect to open a new center in Leland and move along with planning for a senior center in Calabash. The start of the busy season begins with the annual Seniors Helping Seniors and Their Caregivers event scheduled for Friday, Oct. 7 at the Brunswick Senior Center in Shallotte. This year will feature an expanded format to include a mix of presenters, entertainers, vendors, and door prizes. We will be treated to opening ceremonies conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Flag Corps and the Coastal Harmonizers. There is no cost for the Senior Helping Seniors Event, but due to its popularity, we respectfully request that you make a reservation so we know how much food we need to prepare. Without a reservation, access may be limited. The center is located directly off U.S. 17 at 3620 Express Drive, and we will post signs near the entrance of the building and along U.S. 17 to make it

easier to find. Please come and plan to be informed and entertained as we meet members of the community and connect with local available resources. BSRI is also looking to assist with transportation from limited, specific locations. Please let us know if you think you may need transportation. For more information and to register, please call Debra Marlowe at (910) 754-2300, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Happy Birthday, Town Creek! It is hard to believe that it was a year ago this month that the communities of Bolivia, Town Creek, Winnabow, FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

Mill Creek, and Piney Grove came together to support the growing need for a senior site. I am pleased to report that participation has been excellent and the goal is to parlay that growth into a full service senior center in the future.
Sawyer and Associates have created a floor plan for the new Calabash Area Senior Center. Upon the completion of the design phase, a bid process to select a qualified contractor to complete the construction will be the next step. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business, and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new center. We must raise $100,000 to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or have interest serving on the committee, please call (910) 7542300 and ask for Debra Marlowe.
Masonry work on the new Brunswick Center at Leland exterior is complete and sheetrock is has been installed on the interior walls. The project is about 10 days behind schedule. The builder anticipates catching up and finishing the project by the December 2016 deadline. If the building is completed on time, the community can expect that we will do an official grand opening sometime around the beginning of the new year. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Leland Center. The estimated total value of needed items and cash contributions are around $150,000. So far, $140,000 of the $150,000 has been raised. Please help us get over the finish line. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe.

BSRI was one of this year’s sponsors of the Calabash Concert Series, Tuesday evenings with great people, music, and fun at the Calabash Town Park. On July 26, BSRI was the charity organization of the evening, with a special place by the stage and the opportunity to share information with the community as we sold hot dogs and 50/50 tickets. Thank you to all who came out to show your support. Above, Mike McGurn of the BSRI Thrift Store cooks hot dogs to raise dollars for the new Brunswick Center at Calabash.
Marilou Smith and Debra Marlowe braved the heat to set up a booth in 100-degree temps as BSRI was recognized as the honored Charity of the Day at SummerFest 2016 at the Riverwalk Park in Belville. BSRI brought home more than $1,000 from cash donations, meal tickets, and water sales, to be used to purchase items for the new Brunswick Center at Leland, scheduled to open in early 2017. Thank you to all who participated in SummerFest 2016 for your support of BSRI and the seniors we serve. Above are Smith, Marlowe, Chris Mongelli of M&M Bouncing Party Rentals, and Jessica Korona.
Jim Fish speaks to town officials and members of the Calabash community during the Ninth Annual Calabash Town Hall Day celebration. Fish described plans for the new Brunswick Center at Calabash at 10050 Beach Dr., and asked the community’s help with fundraising, donations, and volunteering to bring much-needed services and resources to seniors in the southern Brunswick County area. Renovations are anticipated to be completed for a late summer 2017 opening. Donate today by calling BSRI at (910) 754-2300 Ext. 1008, or donate by credit card at www.bsrinc.org. Senior Center Month
By Susan Whitley
S
eptember is National Senior Center month! This year’s theme is “Find Balance at Your Center: Purpose, Fitness, Friendship, Learning.” Every day, older adults find balance at Brunswick County senior centers. We strive to provide opportunities for seniors in our community to be engaged physically, mentally, and emotionally. In your honor of your valuable contributions, the Brunswick Centers at Leland, Shallotte, and Southport invite you to an End of Summer Celebration cookout on Monday, September 26, 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., at the Ocean Isle Beach Community Center, 44 E. First St. We’ll serve hot dogs, chips, beverages, and dessert; play some great music; set up a few games such as Corn Hole and Beach Bocce; and, if you’re wearing your walkin’ shoes, you can take a stroll on the Ocean Isle Beach trail. On the other hand, you can just relax, listen to music, socialize with friends (old and new), and enjoy finding your balance by the ocean!

One way to find balance is by keeping fit with one of BSRI’s exercise classes. These seniors are working out at the Easy Does it class, taught by the amazing Rita Sanders at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte.
Transportation from the centers will be provided. The cookout will be held rain or shine. The event is free, but RSVP by Friday, September 16. Call your center for details at:

t all started on Dec. 19, 1927, in Autryville, N.C., a small town outside Fayetteville. Miles and Sadie Edge were joyous with the birth of their first child, Miles O. Edge II. Miles I, a truck driver, and Sadie, a housewife, instilled in their children the values of respect, hard work, integrity, and a willingness to help others. That baby Miles, now 89, said you grew up quickly in rural North Carolina. “We were poor in those days, but Dad and Mom farmed and raised pigs and chickens to feed our family,” Miles said. “If any of our family, friends, or neighbors needed help, no need to ask, we were there.” He learned to drive at an early age and drove his grandmother wherever she needed to go. At age 15 and 16, Miles sold meat and vegetables in the family store on Main Street in Cary. “A customer could buy three pounds of fish for 25 cents in those days,” Miles said.
Miles enlisted in the Navy in 1943 when he was 17. After completing basic training in Camp Perry, Va., he was sent to the port of the Pacific Fleet in Oakland, Cal. “By the time the Navy realized that I was underage, I had completed electrical training and was out to sea,” Miles said. A friend and I decided to go see the plane. As we approached the area, a long black limousine arrives and stops at the pier. I open the door of the limousine and a gentleman in a black suit and hat steps out. „Thank you, sailor, nice to meet you, I am Howard Hughes.‟ The plane was the Spruce Goose,” Miles said. The Brunswick Center at Leland
The Leland and Southport Centers teamed up for a trip to Georgetown, S.C., May 9. It w as a mystery trip! Seniors enjoyed walking on the pier and shopping and eating on Front Street. We also took a guided bus tour through downtown Georgetown. Our tour guide, Lloyd, gave us a history lesson about the colonial town of Georgetown.
This month our arts and crafts class focused on creating and sewing handbags. We also celebrated different styles of cooking by hosting an Apron Fashion show at the Brunswick Center at Leland.
Our new Leland Center Balance/ Chair Aerobics Instructor, Isabella O'Brian, leads seated chair aerobics classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Haiku poet Margarete O’Leary shares a few of her recent poems. Enjoy. Shop windows display antiques: old but still useful. Can I say the same? Noisy street traffic. I close my eyes to the din. Softly, wind chimes sing. Ouch! What’s that I feel? Something’s biting me! Karma’s teeth are sharp. Please email your poems to agass@bsrinc.org. We’ll publish your poem in the Senior Buzz and post it on our poetry board at the center. Share your talent—make someone’s day!

Meet Our Instructors! This month get to know Yoga Instructors Charlotte Ranz and Nancy Smith. Charlotte Ranz says she was “born” with a passion for fitness. She played all kinds of sports, took ballet, rode horses, skated, etc., and eventually taught physical education to elementary school students. Charlotte’s been practicing Yoga since 1995 and teaching for 16 years. Her training includes the Integrative Yoga for Seniors Program at Duke Integrative Medicine and Yoga of Awareness for Cancer Professionals, both of which allow her to tailor classes for her students’ needs while keeping them safe. Charlotte loves teaching seniors because “It makes me happy to...see them physically relax and let go of stress...and to watch the look of amazement on their faces when they do what they thought was never going to be possible.” Her Scaravelli style classes seek to “increase your flexibility and mobility; improve your breathing, strength, balance; and, reduce any stress you might have” through connecting mind, body, and breath. There are no head/handstands or backbends: only chair and standing poses (although floor work is fine if students prefer it). Her classes are more about “undoing than doing” and breathing properly. Even folks in wheelchairs and beds can do Yoga! She hails from southern Illinois, moved to Raleigh in 1968, and now lives at Ocean Isle Beach. She Charlotte, far left also offers private lessons. Join her for “Not Your Daughter’s Yoga” and explore Yoga designed just for YOU in a safe and fun environment! Yoga...not just for monks any more! Yoga is for everyone, every age, and every “body.” Designed for seniors. It’s safe, fun, and relaxing. Namaste...Ommm
Nancy Smith, MA, E-RYT, chose dance education as her career, but never considered what she does as fitness. “It's just what I've always done - and the bonus is that moving keeps one healthy—mind, body and spirit.” Nancy’s been teaching dance for 22 years, practicing Yoga since 1997, and teaching it for 5 years. She’s logged over 200 hours of Yoga teacher training covering special populations. “Knowing how to keep your students safe is the most important thing - and often that comes with instinct as well.” She loves teaching seniors because they are “joyful.” She is grateful for the “...energy and experiences we exchange each week” and has”...made relationships and friendships there that I will always cherish.” Her Gentle Yoga class reduces stress/anxiety, strengthens bones/muscles, oxygenates the blood, increases lung capacity, and promotes compassion and patience. “It's as much of a work out as it is a work in.” Standing and floor work is the norm, but students may also use a chair. She says “we take it slow and figure it out together.” (Nancy also teaches a Stretch and Tone class that’s a high energy, fast-paced cardio workout!) Nancy’s a Wilmington native. She moved to New York City in 2003 to pursue her career, but returned to NC in 2014 to start her own business (Movement Works) where she teaches youth and adults. She also teaches private classes, workshops, and in schools. Nancy lives in Calabash.
A special note: In April 2016, Nancy founded “Community Movement Alliance,” a non-profit that brings art education to BC public schools through Yoga, dance, and martial arts. “My seniors at the senior center have been a tremendous help with this venture in regards to their support of CMA. I thank them all kindly for standing behind our mission and vision.” More at www.communitymoves.org.

Miles Edge married Delores, “the love of his life,” 64 years ago.
Miles Edge, continued from page 9
knowledge, experience, the friendships made along the way, will always be with me. When you are 3,000 miles from land and realize that if the ship sinks you go with it, you learn to appreciate life and be grateful for all it has to offer.” Miles has had many jobs. He drove a taxi part-time while working at Ft. Bragg He left Ft. Bragg for a career opportunity in Miami, but on the way, he stopped to see a friend who encouraged Miles to become a sales manager for an automobile dealership in Daytona Beach, Fla. As a hobby, Miles liked to build race cars. He met T. Taylor Warren, NASCAR’s legendary photographer. When the Daytona International Speedway was being built, Warren asked Bill France, Jr., CEO of NASCAR, to let Miles drive one of Miles’ lot cars on the speedway, and permission was granted. Miles knew many of the drivers, including Richard Petty. After nine years in Daytona, Miles and Doris went back to Fayetteville and after a brief period in auto sales, Miles and a partner became entrepreneurs in the restaurant business, opening up a chain of Bedsole Family Pig and Chicken restaurants throughout North and South Carolina. Miles remained in the business for 10 years until he and Doris decided it was time to retire. They retired to Brunswick County and now live in Sunset Harbor. Miles and Doris are, as we say in the South, “good people.” Miles continues to help those who need assistance. He assists BSRI in building wheelchair ramps for disabled seniors, does odd jobs around the center, and cuts grass for friends and family when they need a helping hand. “People ask, why I am I am always helping others,” Miles said. “It’s part of who I am. It’s natural for me, as my parents expected us to give back to others. I would not have it any other way.”

Breakfast Idea: Yogurt Parfait This breakfast treat is prettiest in a glass dish, but you can enjoy it in a bowl, too. Make layers of plain or vanilla yogurt, nuts, crunchy cereal like granola or Grape Nuts, and fruit. A yogurt parfait is a good combination of healthy fat, Vitamin C, and carbohydrates.
