ost of us fared well in Hurricane Dorian, with the exception of a few who suffered from tornados. But at press time, more storms and potential storms are lurking in the tropics. So we’d like to remind you of our name, which is part of our mission: Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. We offer all kinds of resources for seniors. For instance, when a storm approaches, we plan for meals for homebound seniors in case the regular Meals on Wheels drivers can’t make it. Many of our staff volunteer with shelters or other emergency services. At the Buzz, we gather contact information for all kinds of services you might need in an emergency, such as power outages or business closings. Save page 12 of our September issue for some of these numbers. On page 8 of this issue, we list local resources that may be of use in the aftermath of a storm. Here you’ll find information about scams, property damage, debris removal, and more. Always check our website, wwwbsrinc.org, for emergency information about BSRI centers and services, or call (910) 754-2300. We are here to serve you during fair weather and foul. We’re here to provide resources for seniors: It’s right in our name. Be careful out there! Shelagh Clancy Editor, Brunswick Senior Buzz Buzz@bsrinc.org

A Senior’s Guide to Pet Adoption

O

ctober is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. If adopting a furry friend is something you’ve considered, what better time than now? Owning a pet can enhance your quality of life by offering companionship, daily exercise, purpose, home security, and an active social life. Studies show proven physiological benefits: Just 15 minutes with an animal sets off a chemical reaction in the brain and increases production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. As a result, heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels drop. Pet interactions can also lower cholesterol levels, fight depression, and can even help

protect against heart disease and stroke. But where to start? Are you wondering how you are going to care for a dog as you age? This 3-step guide will help you decide which dog is the best fit for you. Step 1: Determine the Best Physical Match: As you look for a pet, consider your physical abilities. Your companion should fit your lifestyle. If you’re an active person you might consider a medium-large breed dog that enjoys walks, fetch, or swimming in the ocean. If you’re a homebody or living with a LETTER, continued on page 6

physical disability, a small dog that uses pee pads or a cat may be the best fit. Also consider the age of your future pet. Older dogs and cats are often better for Lisa Conick with Sophia seniors because they are calm, quiet, and require less physical activity. Step 2: Consider the Cost: Before you adopt, be sure that you can financially care for your pet. Depending on the age, health, and breed of dog, you should plan to spend roughly $400 to $800 a year on vet care, food, training, boarding, and supplies. Step 3: Find a Local Shelter: There are several shelters nearby, including Paw’s Place, Kind Keeper, Cat Tails, SOAR, and Brunswick County Animal Services. Pro Tip: Start your search online by visiting shelter websites and social media pages to view stories of pets.

he local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) is hosting a 4 ½ day visit of one of the most iconic airplanes in aviation history, a 1929 Ford Tri-Motor airliner. This aircraft, known as the “Tin Goose,” pioneered airline travel as we know it today. Number 146 of 199 built, and one of only eight still flying , this fully restored airplane tours the country so folks can take a short flight back in time to experience what flight was like at the dawn of commercial aviation, says EAA Chapter President Rich Largent. The aircraft will be conducting short flights at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport, Oak Island, Nov. 7 through 11. Tickets are $72 online, $77 walkup, and $52 for children 17 and younger. For more information, go to FlyTheFord.org or call (877) 952-5395. Classic cars will be on display each day. The EAA is also hosting a pancake breakfast Nov. 9. Before moving to Calabash, Ohio was home. Buckley won an accounting contest that led him to Ohio University as an accounting major with a minor in economics and a spot on the baseball team.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t complete the last half of his senior year due to lack of money. Buckley joined the Air Force. They agreed to pay his final tuition if he extended his enlistment. He finished school while a sergeant-intraining in Texas. At completion, he was assigned to Intelligence and the university sent him his diploma.

aul Buckley is easily recognized, wearing one of his Korean caps while he lunches with friends at the Brunswick Center at Calabash.

The young Buckley became a “gofer” at Brooks Air Force Base. He says, “Off I went, handcuffed, transporting secret documents to and fro to the Pentagon.” He was cleared for the highest information for the “need to know.” “At that point I was really scared to go to the Crypto Room with the building surrounded by barbed wire fence and guarded by two military police,” he says.

British Zone. They had no password, but Buckley’s Southern accent saved the day. They piled into a loaned British jeep to get back to the U.S. base.

It wasn’t long before Buckley was assigned to classified documents, a different place each day. “One day while visiting,” he says, “I was given a foxhole in Korea by a marine commander as the Chinese were shooting mortars. I grabbed my Thompson machine gun and ran for the foxhole, only to find three Chinese already in the hole. I shot 30 rounds on the enemy. The commander suggested I learn to shoot mortars.”

He was sent next to Northwest Korea to see what the Chinese were up to in the mountains. Assigned a jeep and South Korean driver, Buckley lived on C-rations for nearly three months. Periodically he flew back to Japan for new orders.

Buckley was promoted to 1st Lieutenant and assigned to find a Chinese radar site in N. Korea. He led eight men to a no-man’s-land. The nine slept by day, walking all night. “I got myself my only injury in the war. It was when I walked into a barbed wire fence, hitting my chest in the dark,” Paul says. The group found the radar site, abandoned by the Chinese, then headed home. A map and compass used to cross no-man’s-land failed. They got lost on the wrong side of the mountain, a

Buckley was promoted to captain. He earned many medals and a thank-you letter from South Korea for his war efforts. We, too, are grateful to Paul Buckley for his service. Now Buckley likes writing short stories and enjoys visits from his stepdaughters, Shannon and Shara, his two grandchildren, and his son, Mark. Paul enjoys his big house that he is always adding onto. A special room is one full of 30 teddy bears that his wife collected. Another favorite place is the Calabash Center.

elcome our cooler weather by stocking some great reading material. These fascinating (or not so much) books are available at Brunswick County libraries.

Prometheus was vindicated on July 20, 1969 when men landed on the moon. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and the Apollo 11 NASA team share life lessons in Shoot for the Moon: The Space Race and the Extraordinary Voyage of Apollo 11 (2019). Psychology professor and author Richard Wiseman offers eight principles of the “Apollo mindset” and their incorporation into our own lives. Detailed science and engineering, Cold War politics, team dedication, and the shared sense of purpose engendered by the project will inspire and captivate—even fifty years after the fact. Nutshell review: Insightful interviews and stunning images bring the book to life.

All the Way: My Life in Four Quarters (2019) is a fascinating memoir by “Joe Willy” Namath, recounting his life from small town boy to famous athlete and beyond. Rather than a straightforward chronology, the author weaves stories from his childhood, college, and NFL football years and his superstar status into a meandering conversation. The history will charm readers, and those who do not follow sports can skip the gridiron strategies and tactics hardcore fans will love. Mr. Namath’s honesty about his shortcomings and delight in his many well-earned accomplishments reveal a humble, genuine man. Nutshell review: Written like a friend sharing memories and confessions. The Silent Patient is hyped as a breakout psychological thriller of 2019. Despite an intriguing Greek mythology tie-in, Alex Michaelides’ sophomoric writing, wandering plot, clichéd characters, choppy chapters, and skewed timelines wore me

down. The psychology is boring textbook jargon rather than organic to the story. The author would be well-served by an editor to address a lack of discipline around the storyline, but even more, needs an ethicist to address his distortion of psychotherapy, his audience manipulation, and disservice to the genre. Nutshell review: The final nail in in the coffin is the cheating conclusion. Bury this book!

Teens are another key group served by EmergeOrtho, according to Burnett. In addition to treatment for sports-related injuries, he says, teens may require body mechanics

training for postural injuries caused by too much screen time. About 50 percent of patients come to EmergeOrtho via physician referrals following surgery; others seek therapy directly. (In North Carolina, you can typically see a physical therapist for evaluation and treatment without a physician referral.)

This month we share what we’ve learned about the benefits of physical therapy via the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and interviews with two successful practices in our area.

Greg Burnett is director of physical and occupational therapy at EmergeOrtho, which has nine locations in Brunswick and surrounding counties and next year will open three orthopedic urgent care centers and an ambulatory surgical center. To Your Health “Identifying individual goals and managing patient expectations are the first steps in creating a successful treatment plan,” Burnett says. By empowering people to be active participants in their treatment, physical therapists can help patients avoid many health problems in the future.

Physical therapists Brandon Whittington and Maya Ramos-Allen, who are married co-owners of Level Up Physical Therapy (www.LevelUpPT.com) in Calabash, cite patientcentered care and evidence-based treatment as key business tenets. Whittington and Ramos-Allen focus on individualized physical therapy in a private clinic environment. Level Up patients work with the same physical therapist throughout treatment, which provides a quicker response to therapy, more complete recovery, and longer-lasting results, they say. “Building a relationship with the patient is fulfilling and allows us to give our best care. Working one-onone, we can see change in the patient by adjusting the treatment plan,” Ramos-Allen says. An evidence-based practice is central to providing high-quality care, Whittington and Ramos-Allen

say. As APTA members, they can incorporate the most current treatments into everyday practice. For example, APTA notes about a third of people over age 65 and almost half of people over age 80 will fall at least once this year— and falling once doubles the chance of falling again. As experienced therapists serving seniors, Whittington and Ramos-Allen have integrated fall risk assessments and balance therapy into their core treatment offerings. These focus on improving patients’ function so they can continue their preferred activities. Level Up Physical Therapy widens their community outreach and commitment to seniors by conducting monthly fall risk assessments at the Brunswick Center at Calabash and offering an interactive fall-prevention presentation quarterly.

Whittington and Ramos-Allen also regularly participate in Brunswick Wellness Coalition’s Walk with a Doc events, which focus on improving overall health via one-hour walks that include questions and answers with a doctor or other health care professional.

From the Eye of the Hurricane Into the Public Eye Photo by NOAA

By Beth Klahre It was after 11 p.m. when Vicki Wade was awakened by the house alarm in her Miami, Florida home. Her first thought was that someone had intruded. She jolted out of bed to discover her front doors were missing. Only then did she realize that the tropical storm that was all over the news that day had changed directions and intensity. The hurricane was moving toward Miami with fierce wind speeds of 175 mph. It was August 1992. This was Hurricane Andrew, the Category 5 hurricane that destroyed Wade’s home and over 25, 000 others. Wade sheltered in place through seven hours of torrential rain, worrying about her cat, Smokey, who had escaped when the front doors blew open.

influence on the next phases of her life.

Wade received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Tampa in 1973 when teaching jobs were scarce. After substitute teaching for one year, Wade became the director of the city of Miami’s day care center program. She opened three centers in the inner city, safe havens for over 135 underprivileged children.

Later, Wade received her master’s degree in public administration from Florida International University. She also earned a degree in fire science and safety. She held various positions including fire inspector and division chief of fire training for the Miami fire department, assistant chief for Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and fire program specialist for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In 2015, Wade

Born and raised in Miami, Wade has experienced many hurricanes and today is considered an emergency expert. Her earliest storm memory is Hurricane Donna in 1963. When they learned I was retiring from DHS, they urged me to look at St. James Plantation where they lived. Soon after the cruise, I visited the Brunswick County community, bought a house, retired, and moved in March 2018.” Looking back, Wade reflects, “I finally see God’s plan for me. ontrolling mole mounds can be frustrating. Moles feed on insects, worms, and other invertebrates living in your soil. This time of year they live close to the surface, making an easy meal for moles. As the soil temperature gets colder insects and grubs will go deeper in the soil and the moles will become less active. It may appear by the number of mounds that a large family of moles must be present. Not always! Extensive damage can be caused by one mole, creating up to 150 feet of new tunnel each day. Moles often eat up to 100% of their body weight in worms and insects each day as the travel through a lawn at speeds up to 18 feet per hour. Trying to get rid of insects in the soil by applying pesticides throughout the year to reduce the mole food supply may sound like a good idea but is rarely effective and not recommended. Soil pesticides target specific types of insects like grubs. Moles feed on a variety of insects and on earthworms. Earthworms are beneficial to lawns and gardens. Fortunately most lawn insecticides do not kill earthworms. In some cases reducing the food supply with pesticides will make the moles travel farther in search of insects and result in more damage. What are effective alternatives to pesticides? Here are some proven methods for controlling moles: 

Poison baits such as Talpirid has been found by actual research to be effective. Talpirid looks like earthworms. It is expensive. You can cut the worm bait in half or thirds to save money and it will still be effective. Direct trapping is the most effective means of controlling moles. The mole traps available at home improvement stores are designed to kill moles, similar to a mouse trap. Whether using baits or traps, it is important to locate a main tunnel that moles frequent. To do this, step on all mole mounds, then the following day look for mounds that have been pushed back up. To help conceal the trap, step on the tunnel on both sides of the trap. To help make the yard less attractive to moles, step on all mole hills and reduce watering. Discouragement products that contain castor oil are

widely available and have shown some success. These products come in granules or liquid that is applied with a hose. Start close to the house and treat a band 5 to 10 feet. The following week treat the area again and expand another 5 to 10 feet until the lawn is covered. The goal is to move the moles away from the lawn. Some methods are not proven to be effective: 

Mothballs and mothflakes placed in tunnels are not effective or inconsistent.

Planting a barrier of plants that are toxic such as castor beans, marigold, or caper spurge (Euphorbia latharis) has not been found to be effective.

Vibration and ultrasonic devices emit vibration or sound into the ground to discourage moles. These devices may look nice in the lawn but are not effective.

Smoke cartridges are a Caddyshack technique that may be fun but not effective.

Poison peanuts are not like a mole’s diet of insects, therefore not effective.

Home remedies are often recommended by neighbors. Substances like chewing gum, hair, and pepper are typically touted as doing the trick. Although there is no research to support these claims, if it works for you, go for it.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK Joe Kaczvinsky Jr. and Joe Kaczvinsky Sr. have been coming to the Brunswick Center at Calabash since it first opened, participating in Geri-Fit each week as a team. Joe Sr. is hard of hearing but wanted to continue taking the fitness class, so Joe Jr. made a point to come join him for a bit of assistance! Both say GeriFit is their favorite thing to be a part of at the Center. Father and son moved to North Carolina from Cincinnati, Ohio a little over a year ago but have owned property in the area for approximately 20 years. Joe Sr. worked at Skylab and is known to be quite meticulous. Joe Jr. recently retired after working as a scientist for years. Both men enjoy golf, however, Joe Sr. has traded his clubs for cheering on his favorite team—the New York Yankees. We are so happy to have this dynamic duo staying active at the Center at Calabash!

October is National “Adopt a Shelter Dog” Month To honor this special month, we have invited Brunswick County Animal Protective Services and Kind Keeper No-Kill Animal Rescue to come speak with you all on October 2nd at 1 p.m. about ways YOU can help make a difference. If you can’t adopt, foster. If you can’t foster, donate. If you can’t donate, volunteer. Brunswick County APS and Kind Keeper will be here again on October 25th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for an Adoption Event. Be sure to tell your friends & neighbors! We hope to find fosters or forever homes for as many deserving cats & dogs as possible  ***Also, be sure to check out the Senior ‘s Guide to Pet Adoption ion page 5 of this month’s issue of the Brunswick Senior Buzz! (Written by Center at Calabash Director, Courtney Bledsoe)

It would be ideal if everyone lived their lives doing something kind on a daily basis, but this day serves as a reminder to stop for a moment & do just that! Below are some ideas: ☼ Buy someone a cup of coffee ☼ Volunteer at your local animal shelter ☼ Participate in a fundraiser ☼ Organize a roadside cleanup ☼ Invite someone to dinner ☼ Compliment someone ☼ Hold the door for someone ☼ Take time to listen to someone ☼ Send someone a “Thinking of You” card ☼ Send a soldier a care package ☼ Bake cookies for your neighbor ☼ Tell someone they are doing a great job ☼ Be kind to yourself!

Volunteers

BSRI prepares hot meals out of our senior centers each day. We have a team of volunteers who come in during the morning hours to portion out our meal trays that go in to coolers and out to homebound seniors. If you are local and want to come volunteer your time to help feed homebound seniors we would love to have you on our team. Our meal prep volunteers help to keep the Meals on Wheels program up and running. Without the help of our meal prep and kitchen team we wouldn't be able to get meals out to our home delivered meal team so they can serve the community. We are looking to add to our team of volunteers to meet the growing need at our center in Supply, Shallotte, Calabash.

We are currently facing putting homebound seniors on a waiting list to receive meals, due to the growing need for services. These homebound seniors need your help, they need socialization and a hot meal. Everyone deserves to get a hot meal and human interaction each day. If you think about it, this is a basic human need that most of us get each day. However, some in our community do not get this need met. For those individuals, BSRI’s Meals on Wheels program is a vital part of their lives. You can help us reach people in need by joining our Meal Delivery Team. It only takes a volunteer one to two hours to deliver meals to seven to fourteen seniors in our area. Please help! Text or call Sarah Powell at (910) 880-2777 or fill out a volunteer application on our website.

Contact Sarah Powell, BSRI Volunteer Coordinator at: spowell@bsrinc.org to find out how easy it is to join our team! Online applications can be filled out on our website www.bsrinc.org/volunteer Or you can call (910) 880-2777

Monthly Joke

Did you hear about the monster who ate his own house? He was homesick!

Happy crafters in our popular Paint ‘n’ Take class displaying their latest creations: “City Nightscape.” Lookin’ good, folks!

It‟s Oktoberfest month! In Munich, Germany, celebration begins on Sept. 21st and ends on Oct. 6th! (While our dates are less precise, the event is nonetheless fun.) A little trivia about Oktoberfest fashion: the bow that a woman ties on her dirndl (skirt) indicates her “availability.” In short, Bow on the right: The wearer is spoken for. Bow on the left: The wearer is single. Bow in the middle: Relationship status is none of your business! Bow in the back: Widow, waitress or child.
