Happy March, Everyone! Hopefully as you turn the page from the cover of this month’s Senior Buzz, a sense of satisfaction comes as you see the reality of a beautiful new senior center on the horizon for the North Brunswick area. Many years of hard work and preparation culminated in a ground-breaking ceremony on Feb. 15th that saw Brunswick County commissioners, Town of Leland commissioners, mayors from the North Brunswick area, and other officials don hard hats and ceremonial shovels to commemorate this milestone. I was most pleased to see community members and seniors from our Leland Senior Center attend as we filled the tent with enthusiasm. The groundbreaking ceremony also gave BSRI the platform to make our pitch for continued fundraising for the new center. The goal of $150,000 is necessary to up-fit the building with needed new supplies, exercise equipment, audiovisual cabling, etc. BSRI has been successful in raising $100,000 already, but needs to meet the goal to have all the desired items. With only eight months to go, we need everyone’s help. No amount is too small, and in-kind donations are welcomed as well. We call on businesses, municipalities, service organizations, churches, and private citizens to look

within and see if there is anything they can spare to support this important endeavor.
Tax season is upon us and BSRI is hosting tax professionals to assist individuals with filing their taxes. This assistance is free to seniors and available at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte, the Brunswick Center at Southport and the Leland Senior Center. Senior Games and Silver Arts applications are due by March 30. Ambassadors have been visiting our Senior Centers and Nutrition Sites over the past several weeks. Flyers and information forms are located at most centers. For more information see page 15, or contact Khryste Haselden at (910) 253-2670. March 2016 marks inspection month for BSRI’s SCOPE certification process. BSRI’s three fullservice Senior Centers have been making preparations over the past year to become North Carolina Certified Senior Centers of Excellence. This process is designed to bring each center into best practice standards and provide valuable and worthwhile programs and services to you. Thank you to all who have helped with this important goal. BSRI will present to the Town of Carolina Shores and the Town of Sunset Beach to give updated plans and information concerning the new Calabash area Senior Center. Both of those presentations will be held at the regularly scheduled Town Hall meetings. Community participation is encouraged and we welcome any

residents who would like to attend. County Commissioners approved funding for a request for proposal for architectural services for the Calabash senior center at their Feb. 15 meeting. Hiring an architect to help design the interior of the existing structure is the next step in the process. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A fundraising committee is being formed to help raise the $100,000 that will be necessary to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or are interested in serving on the committee, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. I hope everyone is enjoying the progress of the Senior Buzz. Not only does it continue to expand, providing more information and fun and interesting articles, I get the feeling we have only just begun. Thanks to all who make a difference each day!

It’s Tax Time!
By Kathleen Boyle
B
ob Brooks gets all the questions: How much will I owe? How much will I receive as a refund? How long will the refund take? And as an AARP Foundation Tax Aide, Brooks has the answers. Until April 14, you‟ll find AARP tax aides at BSRI centers. In order to assist you with your taxes, these volunteers undergo yearly training programs. This free program served more than 400 clients at area senior centers last year. Brooks has been one of the program‟s tax counselors for 10 years and took the H&R Block tax course. He and his wife Sharon live in Boiling Spring Lakes. They lived in New Jersey until Brooks retired in 1997. Now they keep busy with golf, puzzles, landscaping, the VFW, and county commissioner meetings. And at this time of year, Brooks is always busy helping with taxes. Every year brings new developments to the tax code. One such change comes with the Affordable Care Act. “If the client does not have Minimum Essential [Health Care] Coverage, they will be required to pay $325, a „Shared Responsibility Payment.‟ That is a per person minimum and it‟s progressive, based on the AGI and the filing threshold,” Brooks said. Keeping up with this and other small changes makes life challenging and interesting for AARP Tax Aide volunteers. “A lot of hardworking volunteers make this program work. I'm just one of them!” Brooks said. Learn more about the program at BSRI Centers.

Audie is a senior advocate, member of several boards and committees, and is known as Audie Lowrimore the senior center Santa. He has been a BC Gator Senior Games and Silver Arts Ambassador since 2012 and is a member of the Gatorettes.
Sponsored by Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, our Senior Games are one of 54 local Senior Games offered statewide by the North Carolina Division of Aging and Adult Services. The games offer seniors a chance to compete in more than 80 events regardless of skill level. SilverArts includes all heritage, literary, visual, and performing arts. Qualifiers in Brunswick County Gator Senior Games and SilverArts are invited to compete each fall in the North Carolina State Finals. Brunswick County Gator Senior Games and SilverArts coordinators select a few seniors to attend volunteer Ambassador training in Cary. As North Carolina Senior Game (NCSG) Ambassadors, these volunteers help the Coordinator spread the word about the games.
Recreation ad caught my attention with the notice, „Do you like to have fun? Join our 55+ senior cheer team, Gatorettes. “After eight years, I‟m still having fun,” Patricia said. “It‟s all about fitness, fun, and fellowship.” Doris Long relocated from Northern West Virginia to Brunswick County in 1985, and now lives in Leland.
The NCSG Ambassadors below were glad to share their experience and enthusiasm with our readers. This is Patricia Singletary's second year as an NCSG Ambassador. She is a North Carolina native who resides in Oak Island.

She lives in Holden Beach with her husband Audie. Joyce has been an Ambassador since 2009. She is a Joyce Lowrimore Gatorette and is active in other programs for the benefit of seniors. “Senior Games and SilverArts keeps you young, allows you to meet people, and is a fun way to compete,” Joyce said. “Several years ago, a senior in her 90s, requiring the assistance of a walker, entered the shuffleboard competition. As you read this, we are counting down the days until Spring. There are many activities and events scheduled throughout the month. You can trace your family roots, learn some self defense from the Sheriff’s Department, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, or take one of many classes that we offer. Being involved brings happiness, and true happiness is what makes life worthwhile. Stop by and see us. Just maybe you’ll get inspired and get involved!
Featured Events Family History Basics — Tuesday, March 8, 1:00pm Trace your family’s history—it’s easier than you think! Presenter Bruce Brown, of Shallotte Family History Center, will show you how to get started in Genealogy! He’ll teach you how to use the computer, provide free training and consultation, and you’ll have use of their software (24/7 access) for free at home, at the library, or their office. They offer free online and phone help, and local history consultants are available. Beginners to advanced genealogists are welcome. Space is limited to the first 15 people who sign up. If you’re interested, call us at 910-754-2300 x1001 to register as soon as possible. New! Choral Group Forming — First meeting is Friday, March 4, 1:30pm. Bring your voice and a smile! The National Council on Aging program “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls” will be offered at our center in May. The class is eight sessions, two per week, for four weeks. It is a structured group setting that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. Preregistration is required. Learn more at www.ncoa.org/healthy-aging; select “Falls Prevention.”
10-Week Senior Self Defense Class Starts Friday, March 11, from 1pm to 2:30pm. When you think of self defense, perhaps you believe that there is little you can do as a senior. Not true! The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Dept. will be teaching a 15-hour self-defense class for seniors here at the center. The class will continue to meet weekly on Fridays through May 13. Classes are open to both men and women. To register, call us at 910-754-2300 x1001. The Brunswick Center at Shallotte will be CLOSED on Friday, March 25, in observance of Good Friday.
Ongoing Events & Items of Interest Weekly Update/Sip „n Chat — Share your questions, suggestions, or comments every Monday at 10am and every third Thursday at 11:30am. Coffee’s hot and free! Blood Pressure Check — LPN Billie Fulford of Amedisys will be here every 1st and 3rd Friday at 10am. This month’s dates are March 4 and 18. No appointment needed. In addition to the BP checks scheduled for Friday, March 4, Billie will also host a first aid presentation during that time—don’t miss it! Loose Change Challenge — What’s that jingle? Could it be spare change in your pocket or purse? Please consider donating your “loose change” to help offset rising costs of senior programs and services. Drop your coins in the big blue bottle at the front desk and hear the difference your donations make! Thank you. Celebrate Birthdays — Join us on the last Friday of every month for singing and cake. This month’s date is the 18th. Fun is mandatory. Party hat is optional. Movie Day — Now showing on Tuesday, March 15, 11am — “The Intern” with Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro. Seventy-year-old widower Ben Whittaker (Robert DeNiro) seizes the opportunity to become a senior intern at an online fashion site. Whittaker's charm, wisdom and sense of humor help him develop a special bond and growing friendship with Jules, his boss, and the company’s founder. Admission, popcorn and candy are free! Soft drinks and water available for purchase.

Who Knew by Lois M. Ward
Wrapped in deafness, weeping, Yearning to break free.
Who knew my favorite song would become a haunting memory. That the wind whistling through the trees would cease to waken me. The ocean would no longer roar as waves crash on the shore.
Wrapped in deafness, grieving For what used to be. Wrapped in deafness, struggling For identity. Wrapped in deafness, striving, ’Til I cease to be.
A special thanks to all our seniors who participated in the NC Senior Center Alliance Valentine's Day State-Wide Advocacy Event. Seniors filled out “Valentines Day Cards” to send to their legislators as a thank you for funding senior centers and to tell them what the senior center means to them. The cards were mailed to our local federal representatives on February 9th. We hope they enjoyed the cards and continue to keep senior center funding front and center. March is National Red Cross Month during which our nation’s Everyday Heroes who give of themselves in some way to help their community are recognized. This tradition began in 1943 when President Roosevelt first recognized Red Cross month in March. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters, and supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. Contact the local Red Cross office to donate blood, money, or time. Who knew I would miss the sounds of raucous traffic flow, strident subway trains, jet planes, rock ‘n roll. Who knew loved ones’ voices, oh so dear, would be heard no more. Their laughter forever stilled in the halcyon days of yore. And yet, in all my dreams, I still hear as I did before.
March is Women’s History Month The National Women’s History Project seeks to honor women who have shaped America’s history and its future by “writing women back into history.” From championing basic human rights to ensuring access and equal opportunity for all Americans, women have led the way in establishing a stronger and more democratic country. Read more about this year’s theme, honorees, and the overall project at www.nwhp.org.

A huge thanks to all the volunteers working on the Log Cabin Quilt in a pinwheel pattern! We can’t wait to see our next quilt! Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades and festivals, céilithe, and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks. Christians also attend church services and the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day, which has encouraged and propagated the holiday's tradition of alcohol consumption. ~wikipedia.com

National Nutrition Month
Each March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme encourages everyone to take time to enjoy food traditions and appreciate the pleasures, great flavors, and social experiences food can add to our lives. Making sure to enjoy the sights, sounds, memories, and interactions associated with eating are essential to developing an overall healthy
eating plan. That is why, as part of National Nutrition Month 2016, the Academy urges everyone to "Savor the Flavor of Eating Right." As part of this public education campaign, the Academy's website (eatright.org) includes a variety of helpful articles, recipes, videos, and educational resource designed to spread the message of good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle for everyone, including seniors.
There is a social component to food. Whether a nightly family dinner, special holiday occasion, or daily lunch at your local senior center, food plays a central role. For more information, visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at eatright.org.
This is a savory and delicious stew that takes minutes to make but tastes like it has been simmering for hours. Perfect to warm your belly on a cool night.
Add stock (or water) and stir well to thoroughly incorporate flour. Add potatoes, carrots and beans and stir to coat. Cover, increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and keep pot covered. Warm a large sauce pan over medium-high heat. Add oil, onions and garlic and all herbs and spices. SautĂŠ 2-4 minutes or until onions are browned slightly and mixture is fragrant. Sprinkle flour over mixture and stir to evenly distribute, cooking 1 minute longer.
Simmer for 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender and gravy is thickened.

edicare beneficiaries are currently receiving in the mail from their Medicare Plan Providers an IRS Form 1095-B.
The form is used to report certain information to the IRS and to taxpayers about individuals who are covered by minimum essential coverage; and therefore, aren't liable for the individual shared responsibility payment. Minimum essential coverage includes governmentsponsored programs, eligible employer sponsored plans, individual market plans, and other coverage the Department of Health and Human Services designates as minimum essential coverage. Additional information about minimum essential coverage and the individual shared responsibility provision can be found here: www.irs.gov/affordablecare-act/individuals-and-families/individualssharedresponsibility-provision. Medicare, Medicaid, and health care programs for veterans are considered Minimum Essential Coverage
under the Affordable Care Act. Medicare beneficiaries are not required to complete the form and submit it with their tax filing. Medicare beneficiaries are required to check the appropriate box on their tax return to certify that they have met the requirements of the law. Many tax preparers suggest that beneficiaries do complete the form and keep it for their records, especially those who have only Part A benefits and receive additional healthcare coverage from another source. The directions and necessary codes are attached to Form 1095-B for guidance. The form can be found here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs. Special Enrollment Periods Medicare beneficiaries may benefit from Special Enrollment Periods that allow them to change their Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans due to loss of employer coverage, moving, Extra Help, and many others. The amount of time allowed for the Special Enrollment Period varies based on the reason for change.
