This month’s newsletter will begin on a somber note. Michael DavidWilson, who served as CEO of Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. from 2010 to 2011, passed away at age 57 from a rare, aggressive form of cancer. Michael was a Certified Fundraising Professional and Social Worker who was hired to take over after the retirement of the organizations’ Michael David-Wilson founder, Jim Russell. Michael was a member of the Coast Guard, a certified dive instructor, husband, and father. After leaving Brunswick Senior Resources Inc., Michael went to work for the Arc of New Jersey, a non-profit organization that advocates for and helps developmentally delayed children. I would like express my personal gratitude for the time Michael spent working to improve the lives of Brunswick County seniors. Our thoughts and prayers are with the David -Wilson family. Michael is survived by his wife Dottie and his daughter Krista.
Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO
It’s hard to believe that we have already reached the calendar mid-point for 2016 and the end of the fiscal year 2015-2016. The closing of the fiscal year is always a challenging event. Final costs are entered, new budgets are developed, and projections concerning growth and expense are constructed. External funding is never a guarantee and difficult decisions are made to maintain long term stability. I am pleased to report that BSRI will once again close this fiscal year on time and on budget. The organization is well positioned to meet its financial FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

obligations with no reoccurring debt. Every BSRI volunteer and employee deserves credit for finding creative ways to find resources and provide services within the scope of budgetary constraints. From an internal perspective, the Board of Directors convenes monthly to review the financial position of the organization and has a finance and audit committee that combs through detailed statements. While the organization manages its finances within a prescribed budget, the current funding creates limitations for services that residents need now or will need in the future. It is our goal to continue to keep administrative costs at a minimum and to maximize resources to the community.
Sawyer and Associates have begun the design phase for the new Calabash Area Senior Center. It is estimated that it will take about 90 days to design a renovation plan for the 12,000-square-foot structure. Upon completion of the design phase, a bid process to select a contractor to complete the construction with be the next step. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, businesses, and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A fundraising committee is being formed to help raise the $100,000 that will be necessary to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution or have interest serving on the committee, please call (910) 7542300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. The framing and sheathing of
the new Brunswick Center at Leland is complete and the project is on schedule. Masonry work on the exterior has begun and for the first time, one can get a sense of the size and scale of the building. I am pleased that the structure has been featured in several local newspapers to illustrate the progress. BSRI is seeking community support from area residents, business and nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be non-budgeted items for the new Leland Center. The estimated total value of needed items and cash contributions is around $150,000. So far, $125,000 of the $150,000 has been raised. Please help us get over the finish line. No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. While BSRI is the recipient of many blessings, it also faces many challenges. The summer months create difficulty with adequate volunteer staffing for home-delivered meals, better known as Meals on Wheels. BSRI has a rich heritage of using volunteers to help fill gaps in services that are not provided by public services. Helping our neighbors get nutritious meals is a critical component to maintaining longevity and staying in the home as long as possible. Our plea is that if you have time in your schedule to assist with delivering a few meals, please call us at (910) 754-2300 and ask for Sarah Powell. BSRI offers a mileage stipend to assist with the cost of fuel. Stay cool out there!

Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) has received a $25,000 grant through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program. The gift provides funds to purchase and install AED devices, emergency first responder kits, and training for disaster preparedness. “In many real life situations, being prepared can ultimately mean the difference between an emergency or disaster situation,” BSRI President and CEO Jim Fish said. “With this funding received from the Walmart Foundation, BSRI’s staff will be better prepared, with an Emergency/ Disaster Plan in place, to ensure our seniors are safe and protected should an emergency situation occur. “It is because of grant funding such as this that BSRI is able to expand programs and services to meet the needs of the rapidly growing senior population in Brunswick County, and BSRI is grateful to be a recipient of this grant,” Fish said. “Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are delighted to support Brunswick Senior Resources,” said Brooke Mueller, Director of Government Relations and Public Affairs at Walmart. “Through this

Volunteers’ Night Out

Bluegrass band Rose Colored Glasses entertains a full house at BSRI’s Volunteers’ Night Out at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte April 15.
Our April 15 Volunteers’ Night Out was a big success! More than 120 volunteers for Brunswick Senior Resources attended this event. Volunteers won door prizes, danced, and ate amazing food. Many thanks to our community partners who helped make this evening special. Rich Gass of Amoroso’s Kitchen cooked hors d’oeuvres, and volunteers from Caldwell Banker passed them. Check Six Brewing Company, Tastefully Simple, Jumpin’ Java, Family First Chiropractic, and Ocean Ridge Golf Course staffed tables. And the night would not have been complete without the great music provided by Rose Colored Glasses. And a very special thanks to all our volunteers!

By Linda Walters here’s no better place to celebrate the joyful, beautiful best of spring than on a farm. This is especially true at Indigo Farms in Calabash.

Out and About
Indigo Farms is owned and operated by the Bellamy family, six generations of amazing farmers. O. K. Bellamy and his wife Mary started Indigo Farms in 1947, raising livestock and growing tobacco and corn. In the ’60s and ’70s, the farm supported traditional field crops and large-scale hog production. “In 1981, seniors at Carolina Shores provided inspiration to transition from field crops to fruit and vegetable production,” Mary Bellamy said. “We had strawberry fields near a big live oak tree and the seniors would pick and buy strawberries. One of the seniors shopping a few days ago left me a note saying she was celebrating her 20th anniversary of shopping at Indigo Farms.” “Farming is hard work, but a rich life,” said Mary’s son Sam Bellamy, operational manager of Indigo Farms. "To have a successful farm you must be passionate about farming. You must learn from past farmers and incorporate that knowledge with current knowledge
and farm practices. “Farming is not mere land. Markets close, contracts are not renewed, and regulations must be met. Independent contractors must compete with larger corporate farms. A farmer must be compassionate, educated, dedicated and constantly learning. History has shown that the role of agriculture is family wellbeing and stability, the greatest hope for mankind,” he said. Sam values the sense of awe and wonder of the farm. “I can go up on a mountain and look over farm land and view the earth and all the
goodness that comes from it. Farming teaches you compassion, resolve, and how to nurture. We have children that tour our farm and you can see the awe and wonder in their eyes and in their laughter,” Sam said. Mary’s son Joseph Kenny Bellamy is the operations manager for the Indigo Farms garden center and bakery. Beautiful, healthy plants and flowers as well as awesome home-made pies, cakes and other wonderful goodies await lucky shoppers. FARM, continued on page 31

SHIIP Monthly News
SHIIP Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program
Volunteers are Key to SHIIP’s Success Did you know that North Carolina has more than 1.77 million Medicare beneficiaries? And all those beneficiaries are served by more than 900 volunteers and coordinators from SHIIP, the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program. That equates to more than 1,600 beneficiaries for every SHIIP volunteer. A division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance, SHIIP was established in1986 to help educate Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers about Medicare, Medicare supplements, long-term care insurance, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Part D prescription drug plans, and other health insurance options for people with Medicare. In addition to the program’s professionally-operated call center, SHIIP has a volunteer base of 120
county coordinators and 973 volunteers who provide free, unbiased counseling about Medicare in all 100 counties of North Carolina. Without its remarkable and dedicated volunteers, SHIIP could not reach out to all the people using Medicare in our state. Volunteers for SHIIP must successfully complete a computerized training course to become certified to better help people with Medicare. They are required to attend quarterly followup trainings and must provide 40 hours of counseling services annually to maintain their certification. Volunteers are also required to submit reports on each client they assist. These records show they have helped 108,094 Medicare beneficiaries in one-onone counseling sessions last year alone and hosted 7,909 public and
media events. This is an outstanding accomplishment equal to about 87,000 hours of service! SHIIP staff is very grateful for the volunteers’ hard work, and we can never thank them enough for all that they do to assist people with Medicare. SHIIP is always looking for new volunteers. Would you like to give back to your community? Do you have computer skills? Are you a people person? Do you have the ability to easily explain things to others? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you may be a great addition to the SHIIP family of volunteers. To learn more about becoming a SHIIP volunteer, call your local SHIIP coordinating site at (910)754-2300. Submitted by M. René Tarquinio from the monthly SHIIP column written by Kerry Hall.
Chef Challenge
By Debra Marlowe A chef contest for healthy and delicious food ended in victory for chef Ryan Gibbs and Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI). On April 16, the Healthy Living Festival and Charity Chefs Challenge was held at Battleship Park in Wilmington. The Chefs Challenge was the main event, kicking off the day with eight competing chefs from local restaurants, each representing a local charity. Ryan Gibbs of Gibbs Management Services represented BSRI. He created a ginger-glazed mahi mahi garnished with pickled red onions on a bed of grilled potatoes and carrots with a roasted red pepper curry. His dish was not only creative, but a work of art. Impressing the judges with his master skills, Gibbs used only a grill to prepare the mahi mahi and sides—an impressive feat.

Gibbs tied for first place, and once again amazed the crowd with a terrific dessert that broke the tie and declared Gibbs the grand prize winner. Gibbs received a personalized chef’s knife and monogrammed black chef’s jacket for his amazing win.

The event was a huge success and will be held annually at Battleship Park, welcoming not only local charities and chefs, but healthy living experiences.

Welcome back poet Susan Bowling who writes about the memories we acquire as we age. Oftentimes, the good memories are what keep us going. What’s In A Memory by Susan Lowery Bowling What’s in a memory— Is it time gone by Or, the illusive answer To the question, why? Events happen in life As, they seem to do Why, the memories You keep, inside of you Some say the fondness Or, that moment in time When it seems there’s Simply no reason or rhyme If we keep the good ones And, push back the bad We can still recall them Good, bad, happy or sad Seniors—Don’t be shy! We want your original poems! While many poems rhyme, they do not have to. Please email your work to us at agass@bsrinc.org. We’ll publish your poem in the Senior Buzz and post it on our “Poets Corner” board here at the center for everyone to enjoy.

Old Fashioned Rock ’n Roll Sock Hop planned for Saturday, July 9, 6pm to 10pm at the Brunswick Center at Shallotte. Mike’s Garage Band will play your favorite oldies tunes including a little bit of beach, a little bit of shag, and a whole lot of rock ’n roll. Hot dogs and hamburgers are the main fare. Tickets are $12 each and are on sale online at www.bsrinc.org and at all BSRI locations. Proceeds benefit the Brunswick Center at Shallotte. Everyone! Put on your saddle shoes or penny loafers. Gals, slip on that poodle skirt and tie up your ponytail. Guys, style whatever hair you have with James Dean flair! Come reminisce with us about the good ole days while having some old-fashioned fun! Sock Hop Trivia: The sock hop is an informal sponsored dance often held for teens at American high schools. The term “sock hop” came about when dancers had to remove their shoes and dance in socks or stockings to protect the varnished floor of the gymnasium and to get better slides in dances like the twist, mashed potatoes, hand jive, and others. Sock hop era started and became popular in the 1950’s and came to an end in 1960’s. There was a re-emergence of sock hop in 1990’s, where younger kids in grade school or middle school began to enjoy sock hop with their parents. The dance encourages physical exercise and teaches the children about how people in other era used to celebrate. Source: www.innovateus.net/innopedia/what-sock-hop

Meet Our Instructors! Our teachers are friendly and know their stuff! This month get to know our Computer Class instructors: Cathi Larson and Ed Ambrose. Beginning Computers Instructor Cathi Larson was thrust into learning computers when her young, school-age son began using them. She took computer classes at night and, as a career training instructor during the day, she began teaching computers to both teens and adults. She loved teaching and wanted to share that knowledge with everyone. She’s been teaching for years. Cathi says “99% of people are afraid they’ll break the computer if they touch the wrong key!” Her goal: show people they don’t have to be afraid of computers or technology, and how to use both to their benefit. How does Cathi do that? She uses plenty of everyday life analogies, patience and gentle guidance, and a bucket full of hands-on practice to make it all come together. She also says seniors are “easy to teach” because they welcome the learning process and are generally very open.
Cathi (seated) helps Joan
Cathi moved from Pennsylvania a couple of years ago and enjoys living here. She began teaching at the center July 2015. Her classes cover the basics of operating a computer, navigation, creating documents, security and passwords, maintenance, internet access, bookmarks and favorites to name a few. Microsoft Office Suite Instructor Ed Ambrose admits he originally didn’t like computers— he “started using them *at his job at the telephone company+ kicking and screaming all the way. The more I used them, though, the more I found my life got easier.” At his last job as a computer technician, he traded his knowledge of telephone/network cabling for computer training in MS Office. He has since installed, maintained, and helped folks use computers to better their lives.
Glenda logs off for the day!
Ed loves teaching because he enjoys “seeing the look on someone’s face when I can resolve a problem as well as helping people to learn new things. People can learn...any Microsoft Office Suite program as well as some of the shortcuts in the programs, or just maybe learn a better way to accomplish what they need.” Ed encourages folks to “come by on Thursdays either before or after the class if they have questions and see if what I am teaching would help them. I am always happy to answer any questions that I can.” Ed has taught at the Center for a few months now and has helped a lot of people understand the basics of MS Office Suite, Windows 8 and Windows 10. Ed’s other teaching passion is bowling (27 years!) where he learned that he “really enjoyed helping people to get better.” He’s a Bronze Level coach and teaches both youth and adult bowling at the Brunswick County Bowling Center in Shallotte. Ed is a native of Alexandria, VA, who came here to visit retired friends and decided to move south. He’s lived here 5 years with his wife, Brenda. Sylena focuses on the screen
