any of us are fans of the beach, and June is the month when the water warms up and we can really enjoy the sand and sun. Those with a heritage of cloudier climates (like me) enjoy the beach strand best after 5 p.m., when the chances of sunburn are lower. Last night I was lucky enough to see a whale spouting offshore! Father’s Day is June 17, and we wish all the dads and granddads a happy day. If you, your dad, or your kids are anglers, turn to page 10 to learn more about flyfishing. June is also African-American Music Appreciation Month, and on page 14 you’ll find a story on a local musician and performer who has wowed area audiences for many years. Need a good book for the beach? Our book section this month is all about beach reads. See pages 16 and 17. Everyone likes a cool find! On page 8 you’ll find a new column by Thrift Store Manager Mike McGurn, who is combing the store to bring you unusual items of historical interest—or just plain fun. Mike would love to hear from you about your interests, and so would we. Let us know what you think! Shelagh Clancy Editor, Brunswick Senior Buzz Newsletters.bsri@gmail.com

ello, Everyone! Great to get a chance to share a few things going on with the organization and ways we are working to improve our senior services. I’m pleased to announce that several of the goals BSRI has for fiscal year 2017-18 have been realized. Photo by Doreen Brennan
At the St. James Woodland Pond, fly fishermen are teaching others the tricks of the trade. Virtuoso Buzz correspondent Doreen Brennan took time off from her many hobbies and interests to capture a photo of Ed Smith, president of Cape Fear Flyfishers. Read more about the club on page 10.

ILEX Corporation to complete an application for affordable senior housing. BSRI is hopeful ILEX Corporation will get approval and bring a 60-unit senior apartment complex to the Ocean Isle Beach community. Finally, the new Brunswick Center at Calabash is expected to open at the end of this month. The new Calabash Senior Center is approximately 12,000 square feet in size and is situated on nearly five acres of land in downtown Calabash. Its location will provide easy access to all local amenities and businesses. A date for a ribbon-cutting ceremony will announced later this month. Thanks to all who make a difference each day!

THRIFT STORE THROWBACK By Mike McGurn, Thrift Store Operations Manager Welcome to Thrift Store Throwback! Each month we will feature some interesting and unique items that have come through our Thrift Store in Calabash, to bring back fond memories of the Good Old Days! One of the great things about BSRI's Thrift Store in Calabash is you never know what truly amazing item you will find. At left is a Capping Ceremony program from June 29, 1942 from the Monmouth Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in New Jersey. The front of the program is very patriotic as you would expect during World War II and each one was beautifully hand colored. Imagine the time and care that took! The inside of the program lists the names of the 13 nursing students and their hometowns. Most graduates were from New Jersey but one was from Wynnewood, Pa. and one from as far away as Marblehead, Mass. Do you have questions or information to add? Have a story related to these items? Please share them with us! Contact Mike McGurn at mmcgurn@bsrinc.org or (910) 712-6458 or Buzz Editor Shelagh Clancy at newsletters.bsri@gmail.com.

oanne McCreary, a snowbird, wintered in Little River where her two brothers also reside. She enjoyed visiting at the Calabash Senior Center for exercise and making friends. Joanne’s enthusiasm has been a welcome addition to the BSRI Thrift Store in Calabash where she volunteered two days a week. In May she returned home to New York near LaGuardia Airport with her adopted Dachshund dog. Joanne worked for two years as a legal secretary, when she decided to attend college at night. Her studies earned her a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice in security and safety. Later, while training several nights a week with New York City police and on patrol from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. Joanne earned a master’s degree in criminal justice administration. She became an auxiliary police officer, working with a partner for two and three evenings a week.
In 1975, an ad in the NY Times piqued her interest. The ambitious Joanne answered the ad and successfully became the first of three women hired by the United Nations as a security officer. Training included a class of three women and 300 men. Her detail included working special parades and events. Travel took her to Africa, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Egypt where her services were to retain
Travel and cruises are Joanne’s favorite pastimes. She hopes to see three more continents to match the four she’s already visited while on duty. No matter where she travels, she bumps into someone she knows from a U.N. trip. She cruised with a friend in 1975, who now lives in Mexico. They met up again 40 years later when both happened to be on the same cruise. They joked about cruising together again in another 40 years. When asked about memories, Joanne said with a big smile, “Collecting seashells, buying souvenirs, remembering people and the time I was on a safari.” Calabash will miss her until next year.

third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. at the St. James Community Center off of N.C. 211. The CFF educates beginners, using expert fly fishermen to teach the craft, on Wednesdays without a club meeting. These sessions run from 4 to 6 p.m. at the St. James Woodland Pond. The
president of CFF, Ed Smith, stresses that CFF club is not a St. James club, it is open to everyone. In 2006, the fly fishing club was founded by Ed Sands with 10 original members. Over the years the club has expanded and now has 80 members and continues to grow.
The fourth and last column lists fly fishing trips open to CFF members. Some of the excursions are outside of North Carolina. If you have questions about the club, click the Contact Us link on the website. Someone will answer your questions promptly. If you are sold and want to join the club, download an application or pick one up at the next meeting.

Director of Education Dan Smith, left, works on techniques with a Cape Fear Flyfishers member on a sunny spring day.
CFF is an extension of Fly Fishers International (FFI). Members of CFF will automatically become a member of FFI. Both President Ed Smith and Vice President Bill Buchsbam represent the club with high energy and an eagerness to introduce more people to fly fishing. There are women in the club, so bring the whole family! “Fly fishing is more of a sport than catching fish,” Smith said. The sport is interactive, he explained, and therapeutic. You do not need to see the fish to fly fish.
CFF has ample gear for beginners to practice fly fishing. Each beginner will have a coach to show them fly fishing techniques and to monitor the casting method. The beginner has the opportunity to work with various rods and reels. Club experts provide guidance on fly fishing brand name
gear. The club teaches fly fishing both in salt water (marshes) and fresh water.
For women who do not have an interest in fly fishing and their significant other is at a meeting, Ann Smith organizes a dinner event at a local restaurant. This gives the ladies the opportunity to come together and enjoy a night of non-fly-fishing conversation. When you join the club, your email is given to Ann so that she can include all interested parties for a night out on the town. See you at the next meeting!
At meetings, members might learn about the latest fly fishing technology and gear, for example. Some meetings will have a guest speaker to share their experience of fly fishing and to discuss fly fishing tips and techniques.
Check the calendar of events on the club’s website at www.capefearflyfishers.com. To locate the calendar, click on Events then Scheduled Events. Go to the second entry that is labeled “2018 Program Overview.” The first column of the calendar tells you when the meeting is being held and if there is a guest speaker. The second column lists the many classes that the club has to offer. The Intro to Fly Fishing class is free for members and non-members.
President Ed Smith, left, and Vice President Bill Buchsbam say that everyone is welcome to join Cape Fear Flyfishers and learn more about the sport.
Volunteers’ Night 2018 About 200 Volunteers and guests came out to the 3rd Annual Volunteers Night Out. This event was so much fun. The atmosphere was amazing. The event is not only to appreciate all the hard work our volunteers dedicate to serving our seniors, but a night to gather and appreciate our organization and mission as a whole. During the event volunteers laughed and got to know one another, they listened to great music, danced, ate fantastic food, and won some amazing door prizes. Volunteers had the option to get some great local coffee from Jumpin’ Java and a chair massage from Synergy Wellness! All volunteers who attended the event got a free volunteer Tshirt! Those will be for sale soon at each Senior Center. We hope to see even more of our volunteers at next year’s event!

family-owned atmosphere with fresh, flavorful food is right down the road at Gusto Grille in Leland. Husband-and-wife Turk and Emmy Dogan opened the restaurant 4 years ago, and they work hard to provide nutritious, delicious meals for their customers. The menu is Turkish/Mediterranean and is always fresh and flavorful. The Dogans do not like processed foods and are very health-conscious about what they put in the menu.
Buzz: Why did you choose the profession of chef? Dogan: I always cooked since I was about 12 years old. I made beans and rice when I was younger since it is a national food. Buzz: What are your specialties?

The restaurant’s trend here is “home cooking.” Buzz: Who is your all-time favorite chef? Dogan: This place is very clean, healthy, nutritious foods, and it is for sophisticated taste. A lot of seniors and retired folks are mainly the customers. We do not add a ton of salt to our meals. Louise Harrison, center, helped organize the Leland Larks, where she lends her voice at events such as the SilverArts Follies’ medals presentation.
By Linda Walters Louise Harrison has loved and celebrated music for most of her life. A Brunswick County native, volunteer, and member of the Brunswick Center at Leland, Harrison started her musical career as a young girl singing in the church choir, and she’s still going strong. Harrison made her theatrical debut in Shuffle Along on the main stage of Thalian Hall in Wilmington. She also performed with the Willis Richardson Players in Bubbling Brown Sugar, The Wiz, Raisin in the Sun, and Ain't Misbehavin’. Harrison also appeared in Showboat with the Opera House Theater Company. Last month, she directed the musical All The World’s A Stage at Thalian Hall. In 2010, Harrison had a onewoman show at the Scottish Rites Temple in Wilmington, a charity
event where she performed show tunes, jazz, and blues. She also showed off her talent for the Senior Follies, Brunswick County Idol, benefitting Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity. Harrison is currently assisting Linda Wadhams, another Leland Center member, in forming the Leland Larks, a singing group. The Leland Larks performed at the Town of Leland Cultural Arts Center in May, opening and closing for the SilverArts Follies’ medals presentation for heritage, literary, and visual arts winners in Brunswick County Senior Games and SilverArts (see photo above).
Harrison plays piano for three choirs at the historic Central Baptist Church in Wilmington, and she sings solo for weddings and
banquets. Volunteering, singing, directing, and performing is a demanding schedule, but Louise also found time to do a period reenactment at the Bellamy Mansion in Wilmington, acting as the slave Sara Miller. “I thank God for all his blessings, especially my loving supportive husband of 45 years, Robert, our two sons, two granddaughters, and great grandson. I love the friends at the Leland Center and appreciate the wonderful staff,” Louise said. “I love to travel, learn our history, and celebrate life. "Music touches the soul. It's uplifting, inspires hope, recalls cherished memories, and makes one happy. I love to sing for people as I can sense their emotions as they listen. It fills my heart with joy,” Harrison said.

veryone wants recommendations for “beach books,” so here is a trio of books set on Brunswick County beaches—perfect for under an umbrella on the sand or lounging inside on a rainy afternoon. Mary Kay Andrews renamed Bald Head Island and Southport as “Belle Island” and “Southpoint” in The Weekenders (2016). There is something for everyone in this story: murder, a hurricane, and lots of drama surrounding family and friends. The author shows her love for North Carolina’s coast— conservation and defending the environment feature prominently— and her vivid
descriptions about the beauty of a protected island are delightful. Nutshell review: Although readers will know the romantic outcome early, the derring-do will surprise. The setting for The Bridge Tender (2014) by Marybeth Whalen is Sunset Beach before the “new bridge.” Prominently featured is the old swing bridge (now a museum piece on dry land) as a representation of this book’s serious themes about adjustment when life is difficult and moving forward when the future is hard to face. The narrative is one of healing, change, and redemption in newly widowed Emily Ryan’s life, supporting characters, and the community. Nutshell review: A religious perspective fits perfectly with this
“set things right” story. O. C. Strunk’s novel, Satan's Angels (2011), features Professor Matthew Bartholomew Glass, retired from “up North” to Calabash with a desire to start a business and enjoy a peaceful life. The difficulties a Yankee faces in transplanting into a small, Southern town will resonate with many readers while the plot will engage all mystery lovers. A body washes up near Matthew’s idyllic home on the Intracoastal Waterway and begins a scary chain of events dealing with contemporary problems involving immigration, slavery, and human trafficking. Nutshell review: The story of good triumphing over evil is satisfying in this novel but elusive in the real world.

f you have not yet read a book by Diane Chamberlain, put this item on your beach read list for this summer. Diane has written 25 novels to date and number 26, The Dream Daughter, will be released this fall. Chamberlain is a North Carolina resident and you will find familiar North Carolina cities as the settings in her books, especially places along the coast. She grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey, where her inspiration came from reading books by authors such as Victoria Holt and Sinclair Lewis. Chamberlain’s education and degrees are in social work. It was while working in a hospital in San Diego that she started her love of writing. Later, she opened a private psychotherapy practice in Alexandria, Virginia specializing in psychotherapy with adolescents, and some of her experiences with teens are captured in her fictional novels. Although she attended a class on fiction writing, most of her writing was “learned by doing.”

veryone loses their balance, but not everyone falls! Walking gracefully through senior life is all about balance, literally. This is why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends an annual balance screening for every person 65 and older. The fall prevention initiative is called STEADI, which stands for “STopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths and Injuries.” One in four adults older than 65 will fall every year, and falls are a major reason for older adult deaths—74 older adult deaths per day in 2015.
Decrease in balance is a naturally occurring process that affects individuals in different ways. In the same way golf lessons improve your golf swing and dance classes improve dancing, there are resources for improving balance as well.
Approaches to improve balance include strengthening exercises, stretching, tai chi, medication adjustments, and balance training with a physical therapist. The STEADI fall screening, provided by a healthcare professional, is designed to direct you to the approach that is correct for you.
Brandon Whittington, D.P.T. and Maya Ramos-Allen, D.P.T. offer free screening for falls at Level-Up Physical Therapy in Calabash. Ask your healthcare provider if this screening is right for you.
Many people don’t talk about falls they have had or disregard them as an unusual incident. It’s important to open dialogue between you and your healthcare provider and not write off falls as a stroke of bad luck. Falls can lead to serious injury and loss of independence, and are not something to be taken lightly. The STEADI screening process is one or two parts and for most people will
be completed with a short questionnaire or discussion with the screening provider. If an individual is found to be at risk, the second part is implemented, which includes three physical tests: a walking test, a balance test, and a strength test. The screening places each person into low, medium, or high fall risk groups, and appropriate advice will be given.
Ask your healthcare provider about fall screening and fall prevention if you are 65 or older whether you have had a fall, feel you may be at risk for falls, or even if have never had an issue. At Level Up Physical Therapy in Calabash, we offer STEADI fall screening free of charge by walk-in or by appointment. Call us at (910) 579-2745 for additional information or go to www.LevelUpPT.com. For walk-in screenings you can stop by our clinic at 10000 Beach Dr. SW, Calabash, NC 28467. We are experts in balance and fall prevention.

RALEIGH -- Many retirees and Medicare beneficiaries are on a fixed income and want to save money wherever they can. Each year, thousands of people contact the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) to help identify savings in their Medicare coverage. Throughout the year, but particularly during the Medicare Open Enrollment period from October 15 through December 7, Medicare beneficiaries examine their coverage for the Part D Prescription Drug plan to determine if their current plan is still best for the coming year. Each year formularies change, prices change, and programs change. In 2017, SHIIP assisted 102,000 consumers statewide, saving them $60 million. In addition, nearly 6,500 consumers received assistance in the Extra Help program. In Brunswick County, the BSRI SHIIP Coordinating Sites assisted 1,485 consumers and saved Brunswick County residents $1,049,378! If you have questions about Medicare or the Extra Help program, contact SHIIP at 1-855-408-1212 to speak with a trained counselor or to request a free brochure, or go to www.ncshiip.com. SHIIP is a division of the North Carolina Department of Insurance’s Consumer Assistance Group that assists people with Medicare, Medicare Part D, Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage and Long-Term care insurance questions. We also help citizens recognize and prevent Medicare billing errors and possible fraud and abuse through our N.C. Senior Medicare Patrol program.
