November is the month where we recognize the 78 million people who dedicate their time, often unpaid, caring for a family member or loved one in need. Caregiving has increased as Baby Boomers have aged. Older adults are also living longer with multiple chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and dementia’s such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Providing care for our loved ones can be very rewarding but caregiver stress and burnout often accompanies this service, especially the longer you have been a caregiver. Women are at a higher risk to experience caregiver stress that includes social isolation, depression, financial issues, lack of coping skills, a feeling of being overwhelmed, and fatigue. In our area, caregivers can attend the Caregiver Support Group at the Supply Center. While caregivers meet with each other and learn tools to cope with stress and burnout, they are encouraged to bring their loved ones for some helpful respite. Contact Melissa at 910-754-7604 ext. 1060 if you are interested in attending the Caregiver Support Group at Supply Center. November is National Diabetes Month

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 34 million Americans, or one in ten, have diabetes. Nearly 90 million Americans, or one in three, have prediabetes. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes do not make the hormone insulin and depend on insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes is caused when your cells don’t respond normally to insulin. Do you know the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes? Click here to take the Diabetes Quiz! YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina offers a Diabetes Prevention Program where participants can learn skills that help prevent Type 2 Diabetes. For more information click here. Thank You For Your Service!

We observe Veteran’s Day on Wednesday, November 11. This day is a time for us to remember the men and women who have served in our Military.

According to Military.com, the holiday was originally called Armistice Day, the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. When first celebrated as Armistice Day, the day marked the end of World War I, formally recognized on the “11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month” in 1918.

In 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars. Today we continue to celebrate the day as Veterans Day, still recognizing the original tie with November 11. Click on the picture for a special video tribute.
