Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Happy Hanukkah and Kwaanza! It’s our season of celebrations, and we at the Buzz hope your holidays are merry and bright. Our BSRI centers and sites are decked out for the holidays, and we invite you to join us for the activities, meals, and events you will find on these pages. We’re expanding the range of ages we serve. Beginning in January 2019, we’re welcoming everyone 50 and older to join in our programs and services. We want to include as many people as possible in our wide range of programs and services, so notquite-seniors are welcome too! Just register at the front desk at any of our nine locations. For those age 50 to 59, there is a $99 annual fee. There’s no charge for participants 60 and older. It’s time again to think about what changes we’d like to make in the new year. Please help us decide what changes are best: Is there something you’d like to see included in the Buzz? More photos, or a certain type of story? Do you have a part of the Buzz you love—or hate? With your help, we can make the Buzz your favorite magazine. Drop us a line at the address below, or call (910) 622-1036. Shelagh Clancy Editor, Brunswick Senior Buzz Buzz@bsrinc.org

eginning Jan. 1, 2019, people 50 and older are welcome to join in Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI) senior center programs and services. There’s no charge for participants 60 and older. For individuals ages 50 to 59, there will be a $99 annual fee.

BSRI operates five full-time senior centers in Brunswick County and four part time senior sites with congregate lunches and other activities. We serve as a community focal point and resource for older adults and their caregivers. We promote personal growth and independent living through programs and services such as:        

Social and Recreational Activities Physical Fitness Programs Educational Programs Nutritious Lunches Creative Arts Computer Classes Trips Special Events

Students Ada Rosebour and Michael Rosen get some computer instruction at a BSRI Center.

Our senior centers operate with funds from a variety of sources: federal, state, and local governments; special events; participant contributions; grants; and volunteer hours. Our budget must include the costs of operating the facility, staffing, and related expenditures. At least 60 percent of fitness, arts and social and recreational programs are offered at no cost. We accept participant contributions to offset costs. No more than 40 percent of programming comes from fee-based classes. When fees are charged for classes, proceeds are used to pay the instructor. Participants can voluntarily contribute to congregate lunch costs, too. Those contributions mean BSRI can expand to offer lunches to more participants. But there’s no requirement to pay for meals, which are offered at no cost to those 60 and older.

Look through this issue of the Brunswick Senior Buzz to find out what’s happening at a center near you. Better

yet, stop by your local center and check us out. We think you’ll find a lot of good reasons to join. Just register at the front desk and you’re part of Brunswick Senior Resources Inc.

The center director position at the Brunswick Center at Calabash has been filled. Courtney Bledsoe, former Assistant Director at the Brunswick Center at Leland and the Brunswick Center at Supply, has happily accepted the position and couldn’t be more excited to join the Calabash crew. “I feel truly honored and blessed to be serving at the center at Calabash,” Bledsoe said. “The thought of being a part of Brunswick Senior Resource’s newest senior center is so exciting! We have big plans for the future and I’m elated to be on board during the center’s early days. “The Calabash team of staff, volunteers, and all of the Calabash participants have been supportive and welcoming. I am looking forward to this new journey and am eager to embrace all of the changes, challenges, and victories we have ahead of us.”

ecember is a great time to bring greenery indoors for holiday decorations. Be selective in which plants you use for decorations. Certain plants can be hazardous to pets and people.

One plant to avoid is oleander. Oleander is popular in this area because of its high salt and drought tolerance, but all parts of this plant are poisonous if eaten. The sap can cause serious burns in people who are particularly sensitive to it. Carolina cherry laurel

The bright red berries from a Nandina plant are often used in Christmas decorations. These berries are not poisonous to humans but can be harmful to cats and some birds. You may want to avoid Nandina berries if you have curious cat. Another plant that is popular during the holidays is mistletoe. Its leaves and berries can be toxic if eaten in quantity. A small sprig

There is a safe alternative to these plants right in front of your house. Yaupon is a very popular lowgrowing evergreen shrub in Brunswick County. Yaupon is also known as yaupon holly or Christmas berry. It grows in sandy soils in areas with mild winters and hot humid summers. Yaupon was so prevalent on Oak Island near Caswell Beach that the town of Yaupon Beach was incorporated there in 1955. The small red fruit of yaupon is an important food for birds. Although the fruit can induce nausea and vomiting in humans, the leaves can be used to make tea. Yaupon is the only plant native to the U.S. that contains caffeine. Best of all, yaupon is a perennial plant that can survive a couple of decades in the wild.

Other plants that can be highly toxic if eaten include azaleas, winter daphne, and Carolina jessamine. Carolina cherry laurel should be avoided, as the wilted leaves of this plant produce cyanide when ingested. Plants with berries should be used with caution. The berries of all hollies, including native yaupon and American holly, can cause vomiting and diarrhea if eaten in large quantities. Holly berries are not a major concern unless small children

A Tradition of By Joan Leotta

H

Stocking for a Missing Family Member

anging up and filling Christmas stockings is a cherished tradition in our family. My mother imbued me with a love for this tradition by making the candy treats and tiny gifts a delight. She ordered chocolate “Dutch shoes from a catalog, gathered up pens and tiny booklets, accessories for my dolls and stuffed animals, and tiny gumball machines and wound the treats into a surprise ball. The stocking was something we were allowed to open before everyone else made it downstairs, so

it became a focal point of Christmas morning. As I grew older, my treats included hair bands and ribbons, eyeglass cleaning kits, and more.

When I married, I announced to my husband that we were doing stockings. Not something his family had done, but he took to it bravely and 40 years later, he still shops for little treats for my stocking— sometimes a small piece of jewelry makes it into the bag, or a pen I may have admired during the year. I took charge of his stocking, and then the stockings for our children,

Family traditions such as Christmas stockings add to the excitement of holiday anticipation throughout our lives.

Christmas Stockings and then making one for my own dear mother. While I was still working, I gathered up freebies at conferences: keychains, pens, novelty items. Most of these things, well, the kids would leave the in the stocking. It became a tradition to keep regifting them, until they were lost. One keychain managed to find its way into our daughter’s stocking every year, one of the constants in the array of candies and favorite hair twists that fill her stocking—and of course the surprise ball.

Early on, I gave up on the commercial ones and made my own—small gifts, candy, money. As she has gotten older the center is often a nice piece of jewelry or a gift card. At one point, my brother-inlaw suggested adding an orange, a traditional item from the days when oranges were scarce in winter, and that addition has become a part of our tradition. We use the same stockings and decorative stocking holders year after year.

After forty years, my husband and I mostly fill each other’s stocking with candies and a pair of novelty socks. Allergies have changed the type, but we still comb the aisles of shops like World Market to search for new, exciting treats. We spent the Christmas of 2015 in Europe—but both my husband and daughter were excited when, on Christmas

morning, at the breakfast table, they each found a small stocking filled with bookmarks, candy, and silly socks. An elf made one for me

that year. Are stockings a part of your tradition? If not, it’s never too late to start.

’Tis the Season to be Jolly By Mallory Balice, Program Specialist

T

he holiday season can bring many people happiness and stress at the same time. You may feel like there are a ton of things to get done every year during the holidays, such as scheduling family get-togethers, picking out Christmas gifts to buy, or attending holiday parties. Here are a few things you can do to make sure

the holidays are low-stress for you and your family: 1. Organize a to-do list: If you write everything down that you need to do and actually see it, it may be easier to manage all your tasks that need to get done. 2. Create a budget: We all know that money can bring a lot of stress

APPLES

for everyone during the holidays. Setting a budget on gifts and then of course sticking to it is very helpful. 3. Get others to help you host a party: Ask your friends and family members to help you cook or decorate if you are hosting a holiday party. You do not have to do everything by yourself, let others help you.

hether you’re looking for a cozy gift or something to enjoy yourself during the holiday season, one of these Christmas books may be the perfect item. All these books are available through the Brunswick County Library System. “Christmas is a condition of the heart… It’s being open and sincere, generous and kind to those with less, or showing our love to those we cherish.” Debbie Macomber’s Merry and Bright (2017) is a quickread holiday romance with characters that strike a chord of recognition—these could be a coworker, friend or relative! The almost-toopredictable narrative is all things Christmas: cookies, family tension, financial struggles, workplace woes, and drama involving online dating. This book is as frothy as hot chocolate and just as sweet. “The true experience of Christmas is wonder.” The Everything Christmas Book (2008) by Yvonne Jeffery offers the origins and history of Christmas, its celebration in various countries and cultures including a dozen multicultural winter

celebrations. The reader will find classic stories and lovely poems to enjoy solo or share with youngsters. This treasury of fun craft projects and handmade gifts, yummy recipes, and lovely beverages elicits the spirit of the holiday. Room-by-room décor, safety during the holidays, and even tips for welcoming visitors render this book as practical as it is delightful. “Christmas … that enchanted day we all march towards with such incredibly high expectations, magical expectations…” Editor Charline R. McCord’s A Very Southern Christmas: Holiday Stories from the South's Best Writers (2003) is an overlooked collection that will challenge and intrigue connoisseurs of contemporary fiction. From a rather disturbing take on children’s pageants to talking animals on Christmas Eve, from humor to discontent—these ten stories are a little dose of reality behind the holidays. This edgy assemblage reminds us of our humanness and the connections we share with one another. The Friends of the Library Southport and Oak Island invite readers to visit their used book sale Dec. 8. Most books are $1 or less. This month, all holiday food books are half price. Proceeds benefit the Barbee Library (Oak Island) and the Harper Library (Southport). The sale is held inside Southport Realty, 727 N. Howe Street, Southport, next to Taylor Cuisine Café. DECEMBER 6 TH – 12TH IS

NATIONAL INFLUENZA VACCINATION WEEK National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) is a national observance that highlights the importance of continuing influenza vaccination through the holiday season and beyond. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends an annual influenza vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older to reduce the risk of illness and hospitalization. Now is a great time to vaccinate – to protect your family, friends and yourself. Medicare Part B covers one influenza vaccination and its administration each influenza season for Medicare beneficiaries. If medically necessary, Medicare may cover additional seasonal influenza vaccinations. Ask a SHIIP Counselor for more information.

Taking a Look Back... Your Activity Contributions At Work! Thanks to those that participated in our Halloween Costume Contest!

Thanks to your ongoing support, we’ve been able to purchase new equipment & supplies! for senior programming!

Thanks to American Legion Post 68 and Shelley & Doug for helping us honor our Veterans with Breakfast!

Senior Spotlight Meet Nancy and Bob! “Patience and trusting each other is key,” advise Nancy and Bob Baker. After 40 years of marriage, we‟ll take their word as fact! Nancy hails from Des Moines, Iowa and Bob comes to us all the way from Boscobel, Wisconsin. Nancy began her career caring for others as nursing assistant, later moving into food service, and even working as a blackjack dealer on a river cruise! Bob served in the U.S. Army before moving to Iowa to work in the aluminum industry. Once they were both in Iowa, their paths crossed at a friend‟s house 40 years ago and they haven‟t looked back since! After visiting the Carolinas for 30+ years, the couple decided to embark on a „permanent vacation‟ and made Leland, NC their home six years ago. Nancy and Bob enjoy spending time together and with friends at the beach collecting sharks‟ teeth, sea glass, and shells. Their most treasured memories have included raising their family, and the experience of holding their granddaughter when she was only 3 minutes old!. Bob also beamed when speaking of Nancy, sharing, “I have the best honey in the world”. Thank you, Nancy and Bob, for making our days brighter and our smiles bigger. We are so lucky to have you in our BSRI family!

At The Table

Welcome to a new column featuring our seniors’ insights, history, advice, musings

by Margarete O’Leary and such. Every day, many gather “at the table” for lunch, sharing their lives with

each other. We wanted to highlight our “regulars” in a special way by asking a featured question each month, then sharing their thoughts with you. Take a walk down memory lane as our seniors reveal some of their Favorite Christmas Memories. I remember getting a hand-made rocking chair. I also remember (us kids) sticking our fingers in the holiday pies and cakes that were put in the pie cabinet. After tasting them, we’d turn them around so the adults wouldn’t know. They always knew, but none of us ever admitted it! — Carrie Hough We always got a stocking filled with pecans, oranges, and tangerines. — Dale Rogers Pearlene Fullwood seemed to be a woman of few words that day so she simply enjoyed participating in the general holiday conversation with Vernie and me. (Picture not available)

I received a set of doll dishes for Christmas and it had a beautiful butter dish in it. I love butter! — Vernie Durham

Every Christmas was always a good one, but I remember my dad would give each of us a (whole) coconut and a box of raisins with the seeds in them. We never knew why. I just know he loved those two things. — Nell Gore

“I had to begin sleeping on the sofa so the kids wouldn’t get into the gifts before Christmas morning!” — Charlotte Corday
