The month of February has to be one of the most interesting and special months of the year. It has a special place for me as it represents the anniversary month that I was hired to work with BSRI. I can hardly believe that five years have passed so quickly. Reflecting upon this time brings me much joy. So much has changed and I am grateful that the gains have outweighed the setbacks. Over this period, a significant amount of time has been spent improving our infrastructure and facilities. We have also been able to improve access to services and appeal to a wider range of seniors who have come to love what we do and finally feel there are activities that reflect their interests. Most importantly, we have been able to keep a promise of returning meal preparation on-site and significantly improving quality. Despite these gains, there is still much to do—in fact, the work will never be entirely done. I also wish to express my thanks to the Leland Rotary Club and John Ingraham LLC for donating $10,000 each to allow BSRI to match the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation challenge of $20,000. Those funds will allow BSRI to open the new Brunswick Center at Leland with a full service

The Brunswick Center at Leland
By Shelagh Clancy Buzz Editor
T
he new Brunswick Center at Leland opens its doors in February, and seniors and staff can’t wait.
Set at the midpoint where new Leland and old Leland meet, the new building has something for everyone. There’s a park behind and a wide path leading to the library next door so the new center is integrated with surrounding resources and situated for fun. “We will have multiple activities at the same time. We’ll eventually extend hours to 8 p.m. And we’ll have more space for congregate meals,” Leland Center Director Sandra Brooks said. “There’s an overhang outdoors to help move Meals on Wheels drivers through,” BSRI President Jim Fish said. That will help speed up loading at lunchtime and keep meals hot.
The old center now serves 30 meals a day; the new center will add 40 more meals during its first few months. And the new center will soon prepare meals on-site.
Activities at the old center had outgrown the small, 4,200-squarefoot space. Leland’s new facility is triple the size, with five activity rooms, a large multipurpose room, and upstairs offices. “Now we can have five or six activities at a time,” Brooks said. The spacious new center will have room to add Tai Chi, yoga, arthritis pilates, arts and crafts programs, and more. The space is flexible to accommodate new programs as interests change. “Ten years ago, senior centers didn’t have Tai Chi classes,” Fish said.

The new center is set to serve all area seniors. “The bulk of Leland seniors live south of here. But up-and-coming seniors aged 52 to 58 live north of here,” Fish said. Center staff is excited to hear newcomers’ fresh ideas.
“There are always surprises. New people will bring new ideas, new activities.” The large multipurpose room has a dividing wall that folds away, so classes and events can use either side or the entire large space. One side will definitely be used to add a new line dancing class, Brooks said. On the other side, a wide window opens to the kitchen for serving meals.
room can accommodate 300 to 400 people and there’s a full kitchen available for catering or cooking. Interested in renting space? Call Debra Marlowe at (910) 754-2300. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Brunswick Center at Leland is scheduled for 3 p.m. Feb. 20, and the public in invited to attend.
The community has responded to requests for donations. The goal for the kitchen was met due to a grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation. The Leland Town Hall has donated many used items. There is still a need for more exercise equipment and computers for new computer classes. If you can make a donation, please call Debra Marlowe at (910) 754-2300.
Head upstairs by stairs or elevator and you’ll find offices and a conference room in the new Leland Center. These rooms will be furnished with desks, tables and chairs and can accommodate activities such as individual Medicare Open Enrollment meetings and the tax preparation services offered each year by AARP. Offices and activity rooms may be rented by outside groups, too, for card games, birthday parties, weddings, and other needs. The multipurpose

A new senior center is coming to southern Brunswick County, too. Even as workers put the finishing touches on the new Brunswick Center at Leland, others are busy at 101 Stone Chimney Road, preparing the former Brunswick County Realtors Association site to welcome seniors from Lockwood Folly, Sunset Harbor, and all of Supply. Work teams have been busy upfitting the Stone Chimney site in preparation for opening the building as a daily nutrition site this month. The new Brunswick Center at Supply will replace the current Lockwood Folly site on Stanbury Road and the Sunset Harbor site, reuniting a close-knit group of seniors. The spacious building can support future growth. One day, when time and funding permit, BSRI hopes to offer case management services and expanded hours at Stone Chimney. “This site is an important cog in the wheel of providing services for

the fastest-growing population in Brunswick County, said Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Brunswick Center at Supply is scheduled for 3 p.m. March 20.
BSRI in conjunction with Brunswick Community College has scheduled Introduction to Medicare classes. These classes include both a lecture and interactive instruction in order to help participants work through the Medicare maze. Registration is required, as participants receive a packet of information that covers the topics covered in the class. There is no charge, but space is limited. All classes start at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. If interested in attending, please call BCC at (910) 755-7300 to register.
Food Service

ppetizing food, appealing presentation, and appropriate portions are the buzz at the lunch tables at the Shallotte Senior Center. “Vegetables are properly cooked. People are eating more so there is less waste,” said diner Doris Page Johnson. Lunch patrons have noticed the difference since Chef Gibbs began meal service in midDecember. The favorite menu item for those sharing Doris' table is macaroni and cheese. Those at Cora Frink’s table agree they can taste the difference. “Chef Gibbs is doing a good job,” Frink said. “There is an improved menu, rice and vegetables are properly cooked, most all of it is good. One of my favorite menu items is the chicken smothered in gravy.” In December, Chef Ryan Gibbs launched a new food service for 10 Brunswick County senior centers and sites and for seniors receiving Meals on Wheels. All the food is prepared at the Brunswick Center at Southport.

Gibbs met this challenge with competence, confidence, and great skill in cooking. All chefs experience stress and anxiety on opening day and it was no different for Gibbs. That fateful day is over, and the service has been well received by diners. “There are three things at the forefront of success: Meal planning, quality food and a trained staff,” Gibbs said. “Menu items must be changed frequently for variety. Fresh food is prepared daily and maintained at the proper temperature. And staff must be trained in all facets of meal preparation.”
If a wish was granted, what would Gibbs’ wish be? “I would appreciate more volunteers excited about learning to cook for large groups, while helping in the kitchen and receiving feedback about our service,” Gibbs said. “And feedback. Feedback will let us know the food items to keep or remove from the menu and will give us an opportunity to answer questions or

concerns. Feedback may be given to your local senior center manager, center suggestion box, or through surveys provided by the center." Fully operational kitchens for food service are planned for the Shallotte and Leland centers beginning this summer. Gibbs will provide required training and guidance for volunteers interested in cooking or a career in food service. Volunteers are also needed for kitchen help and to prepare food packs for Meals on Wheels. If you can assist with BSRI’s senior food service, please contact Sarah Powell, Volunteer Coordinator, at (910) 754-2300.

F
ebruary has long been known as Heart Health Month. Although there is certainly a genetic predisposition for heart disease, choices we make every day can contribute to the condition. Risk factors that can be controlled include tobacco use, inactivity, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, poor diet, overweight, stress, and diabetes. If you smoke, quit. It’s never too late to reap the benefits of quitting. Talk with your health care provider for help. And www.quitlinenc.com offers free smoking-cessation services to North Carolina residents.
Physical activity, diet, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes are interrelated. Just 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each day helps reduce the risks of high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It‘s always a good
idea to check with your health care provider before beginning a new exercise routine.
erate amounts of fish, chicken, eggs, and low-fat dairy. Limit processed foods, red meat, and sweets.
Find something that works best for your body; someone with knee issues would not want to take up running! Exercise doesn’t have to be work. If you enjoy your activity, you have a better chance of sticking with it. Dancing is great exercise whether it is at a dance studio or your own kitchen while dinner is simmering on the range. Check your senior center for a variety of physical activities such as dance instruction, gentle cardio, tai chi, and yoga.
Chocolate, you ask? Especially with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, you many wonder about its place in the heart-healthy diet. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, contains flavonoids which can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
Physical activity combined with a healthy diet can help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. Follow a heart-healthy diet to control blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugars, and weight. Choose plenty of fruits and vegetables, foods high in fiber including whole grains, healthy monounsaturated fats like olive and canola oil (rather than saturated fats), omega-3 fatty acids, and mod-
Even with its health benefits, chocolate shouldn’t take the place of healthy fruits and vegetables or a piece of grilled salmon with omega3 fatty acids. Instead, try to be sizewise and savor every little bite. Combine dark chocolate with fruit for a snack or dessert. Try chocolatedipped strawberries or dried apricots, or chocolate-covered nuts. This recipe works for a Meatless Monday meal with the added bonus of having potassium-rich ingredients which helps lower blood pressure. And the Caribbean flavors will take you to the islands, away from our chilly winter!

Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm
Important facts for African Americans during Black History Month!!! As all Americans know, February begins the celebration of Black History Month. While it is important to celebrate the achievements that blacks contributed to American history; It is equally important to know that blacks have

American Heart Month statistics: In the United States…
African-American risk facts:
Cardiovascular diseases is the No. 1 cause of death for African-American women, at least 48,000 deaths are recorded yearly.
There has been at least one form of cardiovascular disease found in 48 percent of women and 46 percent of men.
48.3% of women in the AfricanAmerican community, over the age of 20 have cardiovascular disease. Only a small percentage believe that cardiovascular disease is a huge health problem.

It’s time to get Crafty!!!! Fee-based quilt classes will be offered every Tuesday from 11:30-2:30 with Isabella. The first half hour will be devoted to quilting techniques and demonstrations. Every 2 months the project will change which will give everyone plenty of time to finish. This way if you miss a class you'll be able to catch up. The month of January and February will be devoted to Jelly Roll Quilts. A jelly roll quilt is one of the easiest kinds of quilts to make because the fabric is pre-cut and you can use a simple sewing method to put it together. Some people even claim to be able to finish a jelly roll quilt top in less than an hour! If you have been considering quilting, then this is a great starter project. If you are an experienced quilter, then this is a simple project that you can complete in a short space of time.
Gather your materials. Making a jelly roll quilt is easy, but it does require some special materials. To make a jelly roll quilt, you will need: • a jelly roll quilt strip roll-40 strips (you can find one in any craft store) Walmart, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, shop on-line with Missouri Quilt Co., etc... • a sewing machine • plenty of thread • scissors • a tape measure • batting material • material for the inside of your quilt • safety pins • straight pins

February is Black History Month (also known as African-American History Month). Senior centers need funding to provide their programs and services and they must leverage all sources to stay in operation. The North Carolina Senior Center Alliance (NCSCA) Advocacy Committee is supporting the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislatures’ call for the increase of funding for Senior Centers by an additional $300,000 in recurring General Purpose funds. That’s great, but they’re a long way from getting the job done. Here’s where YOU come in. We need you to SPEAK OUT! Our legislators need to know we CARE, we WANT, and we NEED the extra funding. The lawmakers are in Washington and we’re here. They can’t read our minds (even if they say they can). Remember: the squeaky wheel gets greased. If you like and benefit from the programs we offer, please support this effort. What can you do to get their attention and make your voice heard? Write your own letter or sign one of our flyers which will be sent directly to the legislature. This is not just a wishlist thing! Without funding, programs and services disappear along with quality of life for many seniors. Call Anne or Kathy for more information or to ask how you can help.
Get Crafty! February’s craft classes are now on Fridays at 10:30am. Signup by 4pm on Monday before class (unless otherwise noted). All materials included unless specified (find what you need to bring by asking us when you sign up, or check the flyer posted in the craft room, or check the Senior Buzz). Remember to register with our center before attending classes if you haven’t already. Come join other crafters and laugh, share crafting stories, make something really cool—and, oh, indulge your sweet tooth with our complimentary candy! Friday, Feb. 3. Beginners! Learn to crochet and make this easy Mug Cozy to keep your hot beverages warm! Although this is a beginner’s project, all skilled crocheters are welcome. You’ll need to bring a size H8 (5mm) crochet hook and your own mug (w/straight or slightly curved sides). We supply the rest. Cost $3. Friday, Feb. 10. Love stained glass? Here’s your chance to make your own beautiful “faux” stained glass without the cost! All you need to bring is one 8 oz. bottle of CLEAR glue (the regular kind you’d use to glue paper with— nothing fancy). Hang in a window and enjoy. Cost $6.
Friday, Feb. 17. Get ready for St. Pat’s Day by making this gorgeous and easy tulle wreath! Made with multiple shades of green and white and embellished with St. Pat’s decorations. Your neighbors will envy it for sure. Cost $20. All supplies included. Register by Monday, Feb. 13. Friday, Feb. 24. Continuing with our Irish theme, learn how to work with wire by making this elegant, freeformed, Celtic Heart Pendant. (No experience necessary—this is a basic Wire Working 101 class). The pendant is lightweight and can be placed on whatever size chain, cord, or ribbon you already have. Cost $3.
Ukrainian Egg Painting Class! Join returning instructor Valerie Giad on Monday, Feb. 6, 12:30pm and learn the age-old art of painting eggs using candle wax and dye! Register by Wednesday, Feb. 1. Seating is limited to first 8 people who sign up. Class fee $3. All materials included.

This month we’d like to celebrate the Secret Life of Corey Teeble. Here’s how I got to know him and his talent. Corey ambled into the craft room one day with a cup o’ Joe in his hand. I smiled and said “Hi. How are you?” He pulled up a chair, set his cup on the table and said, “I’m doing OK. My doctor said I should get out more so here I am.” He began telling me about himself: master machinist for 60 years, 30 years of scroll saw experience, lived in NJ, and retired in Sept. 2015. “So what’s an ex-master machinist/scroll saw expert do after retiring?” I said. Corey replied: “3D woodwork using a CNC router that I program myself.” “A what?” I asked. “Computer Numerical Control.” He decided it was better to show than tell. He moseyed out to his car and brought back a few gorgeous wooden carvings that brought a slight smile to his face and a look of awe on mine. Beautiful detail done by a “computer numerical control” router operated by Corey’s obvious expertise. While Corey can’t do the fine detailed hand-work any more, he enjoys making the machines work for him now. And he does it well. Unfortunately, the pictures don’t do his work justice; but, trust me, they’re beautiful. After my oohs and aahhs had ceased, Corey gathered his creative treasures and said he had to get back home to his canine companions as they’d be hungry soon. Some days life rewards you with an unexpected joy. Thanks, Photo by K. Gehlhardt Corey, for stopping by and sharing the labors of your secret life!
Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
We know Christmas is over, but who doesn’t love the feeling of the season any time of year? Enjoy Susan’s account of her wonderful memories. Christmases Long Ago by Susan Lowery Bowling I remember Christmas Oh so very long ago With hard rock candy And, a candle’s glow Filled with wonderment As, family gathered in When love spilled out And, every heart held a grin When gifts were a mystery All wrapped up with love And, the glorious hallelujah’s Came down from, above Papa chopped piles of firewood Mama got all the cooking done We bowed our heads at the table Christmas long ago was such fun Origins of Valentine’s Day The history of Valentine's Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. The holiday's roots are in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. Pope Gelasius I recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be St. Valentine's Day. Which St. Valentine this early pope intended to honor remains a mystery. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by that name: a priest in Rome, a bishop in Terni, and a third St. Valentine almost nothing is known except that he met his end in Africa. Rather astonishingly, all three Valentines were said to have been martyred on Feb. 14. Source: www.infoplease. com/

Tuxie was a feral kitten on Oak Island before Adopt an Angel rescued him. I adopted him in 2015. The picture shows him at 8 weeks, but he is now 2½ and weighs 15 pounds. He is the best kitty! He still acts like a kitten. How can anyone resists that cute face? —June Shashura Southport Senior Center SEND PET PHOTOS TO: newsletters.bsri@gmail.com

Every Friday at 1:30 p.m. the sound of drums can be heard at the Brunswick Center at Southport. It’s a meeting of the Southport Drum Circle, a group that plays hand drums, bells, shakers, and other instruments just for the fun of experiencing rhythm.

The drum circle has been meeting since 2014 and sometimes plays at the beach or at Franklin Square Park. “We never perform,” said Tim Terman, who started the group. “It’s just about playing together, sharing the power of percussion instruments, some of which are ancient, and spreading the rhythm to the public.”

African djembes are the main drums used. Traditional djembes are made of hollowed trees with goat-skin drum heads, but some members use djembes made of synthetic materials. Congas and bongos, of Caribbean origin, are also played.

The group has instruments to share and begins each session with some fundamentals for beginners. The highlight of each session is when the basic rhythm gets established, more experienced members embellish it, and everyone gets “in the groove,” as Terman describes it.

“We encourage new members,” Terman said. “It’s good for everyone, especially seniors. Memory is enhanced, coordination between brain, ear, eyes and hand is boosted, and, bottom line: It feels good. And it’s all free!” To learn more or join, check out Southport Drum Circle on Facebook.

Happy Valentine’s Day By Linda Walters recious! Sky blue, almond-shaped eyes, creamy white fur with silver/smoke accents, intelligent, playful, loved: Precious is a 4-month-old Siamese kitten who is extremely fortunate to find a home with Carolyn Powell. Carolyn is a well-known resident of Shallotte, owner for 33 years of Carolyn Powell Cleaning Service. Carolyn’s home is filled with love and Southern charm. Home-cooked goodies await her two daughters, Pam and Lisa, and all the family and friends that drop in daily to share stories, a laugh or two, and something good to eat. Before Precious, Miss Kitty shared Carolyn's affection (as does Layla, another beloved cat). Miss Kitty went outside one day and mysteriously disappeared. A great search was conducted, but sadly, Miss Kitty could not be found. Carolyn, heartbroken, decided that she would not get another cat. Months passed. Lisa learned of a cat that had kittens, saw the three kittens, and knew Precious would be the perfect kitten for her mom. Lisa and Precious made a visit to Carolyn and love won Precious a home. Precious is the purrfect Valentine.
