Happy New Year! How happy I am that we have emerged from another calendar year with so much accomplished and so much on the horizon. I am happy about 2016, another year of many achievements. Looking back, here are just a few things that happened: January 2016 – BSRI celebrates its one-year anniversary at Supply/ Lockwood Folly. Brunswick County closes on 10001 Beach Drive, which will become a full-service senior center in 2017. February 2016 -County commissioners, town officials, members of the board of directors, BSRI staff, and the Leland community gather to celebrate and hold the groundbreaking of the new Brunswick Center at Leland. March 2016 – BSRI achieves the coveted North Carolina Certified Senior Centers of Excellence title for its three senior centers, all achieving perfect scores! April 2015 – BSRI holds its first-ever Volunteers Recognition Party. Our volunteers were treated to good food, good music, and a chance to be honored for their very important service. May 2016 – BSRI enters into a
Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO
contract with chef Ryan Gibbs to begin the process of certifying its kitchens, training staff, and organizing efforts to return Meals on Wheels food preparation in-house. June 2016– BSRI once again closes its fiscal year on time and on budget. The organization as a whole remains well positioned to meet its financial obligations with no reoccurring debt. July 2016 – BSRI celebrates its oneyear anniversary with its Calabash thrift store. The thrift store contributed $20,000 toward programs and services for the Calabash, Carolina Shores, and Sunset Beach areas. FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4
Letter from the President FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4
August 2016 – County commissioners vote to vacate food services with Trinity Corporation, making official the plan to allow BSRI to prepare food at its senior centers. September 2016 – Town Creek Park Senior Site celebrates its oneyear anniversary. The new site represents the 10th location under BSRI management in Brunswick County. October 2016 –BSRI survives Hurricane Matthew and holds its 6th annual Seniors Helping Seniors event with more than 300 attendees and vendors. November 2016 – BSRI is awarded a grant from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation to finish the up-fit of the kitchen in the new Leland senior center. The grant amount represented a base of $30,000 with an additional $20,000 available to be matched. December 2016 – BSRI reaches its goal of preparing its own meals for the first time since 2012! Brunswick County closes on 101 Stone Chimney Road, expected to open in early 2017. The most important thing we did in 2016 was stay true to our mission. My hope for 2017 is health and prosperity with a focus on the things that matter most!
Open enrollment for most medical plans ended on Dec. 15, 2016. BSRI and its team of volunteers were able to help more than 3,100 Brunswick County residents last year and are preparing for the
2017 Advantage open enrollment. Advantage open enrollment begins Jan. 2 and will end Feb. 14. Advantage open enrollment allows individuals to leave an Advantage plan and switch to original Medicare if desired. Beneficiaries who return to original Medicare during this period will also have until Feb. 14 to join a Medicare prescription drug plan to add drug coverage. Coverage will begin the first day of the month after the plan gets the beneficiary’s enrollment form. BSRI encourages all those who have questions concerning open enrollment and other health insurance issues to please call (910) 754-2300 to schedule an appointment. Daniels and Daniels Construction wrapped up construction on the new Leland Senior Center. BSRI expects to open the new center in February. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, businesses, and local nonprofits to assist with the needed supplies, furnishings, donations etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Leland Center. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. BSRI completed work necessary to launch the new Brunswick Center at Supply, located at 101 Stone Chimney Road. We expect to open the new site toward the end of this month.

he Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security will be 0.3% for 2017. Due to this cost-of-living increase, Medicare beneficiaries will see an increase in their Part B premium. Because of the SSA “hold harmless” provision designed to protect seniors, about 70% of Medicare beneficiaries will pay $109.00 for the Part B premium in 2017. This is up from $104.90 in 2016. The remaining 30% of Medicare beneficiaries who are not protected by the “hold harmless” provision will see their Part B premium increase to $134 for 2017. This is up from $121.80 in 2016. The following groups of Medicare beneficiaries are not subject to the “hold harmless” provision and will pay $134 for Medicare Part B.
Those beneficiaries who are not
collecting Social Security and are paying SSA directly for Medicare Part B. These beneficiaries have the letter “T” following their Medicare claim number.
Those who enroll in Medicare Part B for the first time in 2017.
Beneficiaries who pay an additional income-related premium.
Dual eligible beneficiaries who have their premium paid by Medicaid.
The Medicare Part B deductible will increase from $166.00 in 2016 to $183.00 in 2017. Most people do not pay a Medicare Part A premium because they or a spouse have at least 40 quarters of Medicare-covered employment.
Individuals with 30 to 90 quarters of coverage may buy into Medicare Part A at a premium amount of $227 in 2017, a $1 increase from 2016. Those will less than 30 quarters of coverage may obtain Medicare Part A coverage by paying a monthly premium of $413 in 2017, a $2 increase from 2016.
The Part A deductible and coinsurance amounts paid by a beneficiary when admitted as a hospital inpatient and into a skilled nursing facility will be increasing in 2017. Inpatient hospital deductible is increasing to $1316 for a 60-day benefit period and the Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance is increasing to $164.50/day starting on day 21 of admission. —Submitted by M. he tinsel and ornaments are packed away. With another holiday season under our belts, many find a few extra pounds tucked under there too. So the timing of International Mindful Eating Day on January 26 is perfect. Let’s begin with what “mindful” means. Mindfulness is being in the present moment; it means we are not in our mind, thinking about unresolved issues in our lives. How many times have you been reading and realize you have no idea what you just read, or after arriving home you don’t remember any of the journey? When we are mindful, we are focused on the exact moment we are in. Right now. Studies show that mindfulness can reduce stress, enhance sleep, increase happiness, control blood sugar, and achieve weight management goals. Pretty impressive, right?
Neuroscientist Sandra Aamodt, author of Why Diets Make Us Fat,
defines mindful eating as “eating with attention and joy, without judgment.” The key is to listen to our bodies, to our hunger and satiety cues. It sounds easy – eat when we’re hungry, stop when we’re full – but this can be challenging. After repeated dieting, hunger and satiety sensations are forgotten and need to be relearned. Mindful eating is giving ourselves permission to eat as much as we want, along with examining how that amount of food makes us feel. Aamodt notes the differences between controlled and intuitive eating: Controlled eaters restrict their food intake, resulting in frequent cravings. They are more vulnerable to binge-eating. Intuitive (mindful) eaters are less likely to be overweight or to be so food-focused. So many dieters not only regain the weight they lost while on their weight loss regime, but gain even more weight, resulting in feelings of defeat and depression. Mindful eaters do not eat by the clock, or the size of the plate, or count calories, or purchase “diet” foods; they do not have the disappointment when weight loss goals have not been met
– in fact they do not have weight loss goals. For the mindful eating experience, begin with food you like that provides nourishment. Select a peaceful and quiet environment free from distractions to help maintain a focus on the food. Take the time to enjoy the foods by using all the senses: Focus on the colors, smells, textures, flavors, and sounds of eating the food. If you find your attention wandering away from the food, accept this lack of attention, and bring your focus back to the food. Midway through the meal, pause and examine how you feel. Rather than cleaning your plate, eat only the amount to feel comfortably full Listening to our bodies while fully enjoying food without guilt is life enhancing. For additional information on International Mindful Eating Day, go to the Center for Mindful Eating website at www.tcme.org. The following recipe from the Eating Well test kitchen is easy, tasty and healthy, a great dish for mindful eating!

Januar y is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month!!!
In memory of those that have fallen
According to the American Cancer Society, cervical cancer was once one of the most common causes of cancer death for American women. Preventive measures taken over the last 30 years have contributed to the decline in the cervical cancer death rate by more than 50%. Increased screening tests have been the main reason for the decline. Screenings can find changes in the cervix before cancer develops. It can also detect cervical cancer in its early stage. Getting vaccinated against human papilloma virus (HPV) is another way to prevent cervical cancer. The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the cause of most cases of cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society is actively fighting cervical cancer by creating an awareness, helping people get tested, helping them understand their diagnosis, and helping them get the treatments they need. The American Cancer Society also funds new research to help prevent, find, and treat cervical cancer. The Brunswick Center at Leland invites you to participate with us by wearing the colors teal and white during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month.
A Special Thanks to Ryan Gibbs, Santa (A.K.A. Audie Lowrimore), The Leland Line Dancers, The Leland Ambassadors and all those who made our Christmas Party such a huge success!!!

Featured Events … Items of Interest Senior Tar Heel Legislature Presentation, January 13th, 11am, multipurpose room (upstairs). Light refreshments served. Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Funding for senior centers has not met the needs of the aging baby boomer's generation who now constitute more than two-thirds of the 50-plus population. Senior Center General Purpose money is vital to support critical center operations. To maintain operation, senior centers must have resources from a variety of sources that include federal, state, and local governments, special events, participant contributions, and grants and volunteer hours. The North Carolina Senior Center Alliance (NCSCA), Advocacy Committee is supporting the North Carolina Senior Tar Heel Legislatures’ call for the increase of funding for Senior Centers by an additional $300,000 in recurring funds. Make your voice heard! Funding affects all seniors in all 163 senior centers in 96 counties in NC, including us! The center will be CLOSED Monday, January 16, in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Zada Mae is back to teach her fun Pine Needle Basket Weaving Class, Monday, Jan. 30, 12pm-3pm. I’m at the center quite often these days, and, a result, I have the pleasure of getting to talk to many seniors. Guess what I’ve discovered? Some seniors live “secret lives.” Lives beyond what they did for a living. Lives aside from families and friends. Lives beyond obligations and responsibilities. The secret life of Julia Wheeler. I never knew my friend Julia had a secret life: doll-making, until she brought her award winning cloth doll, Gertie, into the center! That opened the door to a plethora of questions. Julia was raised as an only child in Tupelo, MS; became a nurse; married a sailor; and started her life’s journey. Being an only child, dolls were her “buddies.” She subsequently attended a porcelain doll-making class at Fayetteville Technical College and was forever hooked! Heads, arms, legs, body. There are many methods to doll-making: cloth, porcelain, composition—even leather. Depending on the type of doll you’re making, it may also need structure: a “skeleton” that supports the doll’s postures. Otherwise, they’re simply soft-bodied, malleable dolls that can’t really be posed or stand. While Julia enjoys making cloth dolls, she primarily makes porcelain ones. Liquid porcelain is poured into a mold then fired to a soft stage, cooled, cleaned, smoothed, contoured, then “hard fired” so it can be painted. Next: repeated painting and firing until the parts are finished and ready to use. Once assembled, time to make clothing. If the doll is an antique reproduction, clothing must reflect that time period in both style and fabric as closely as possible. Otherwise, Julia lets her creativity and imagination guide her. Working steadily, Julia can complete a doll in about a week if there are no complications (such as breakage!). Julia competes in the Doll Artisan Guild and the Int’l Doll Makers Assoc. Show. She sells her dolls, too, and enjoys consignment work. Julia loves her secret life, but says the art of doll-making is waning. Julia encourages others to try their hand at making dolls.
Hours of Operation: Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
In their secret lives, they indulge their heart-felt passions which manifest in amazingly creative ways. Today, I’d like to share with you the secret life of one very talented senior (with permission, of course). After reading her story, I think you’ll agree: Seniors Rock—and I don’t mean in rocking chairs!
Julia with a few of her one-of-a-kind custom dolls. Photo Legend: 1/ Antique “Century Baby” was produced by the Kestner Company in Germany about 1830. It won Best in Category at the July 2000 Doll Artisan Guild Competition in Orlando, FL. 2/ The pin cushion doll is from the Sealy Company. 3/ Gertie, the senior bathing beauty, won Best in Category at the 2016 International Doll Guild Convention in Panama City, Florida. 4/ The tall dark doll is Vanita, an Australian aborigine child designed by Kay Wiggs (Australia). 5/ The “big baby” was designed by Expressions Mold Company.

Southport Happenings Candlelight Reflections: BSRI patrons share their caregiving journeys in the form of stories, poetry, and memories Nov. 3 at the Brunswick Center at Southport. Speakers from BSRI and area agencies also participated in the candle-lighting ceremony to recognize people living with memory impairments and chronic disease, and their caregivers. Stockings for Seniors: Without fail, each year the St. James Service Club supplies gifts for the BSRI Stockings for Seniors program. This year the club supplied more than 240 gifts, and attached a food card to each gift. BSRI is very grateful for their support and dedication.
Having a great time at the State Fair!
