Happy Fourth of July! I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to recognize the special place that July has in the hearts of Americans as we collectively recognize our independence. I am proud of our veterans and the everyday people who sacrificed so much to make today possible. How fortunate we are to draw a breath of free air, and I pray that we never take it for granted. My thoughts turn to my grandparents who were part of that very special generation that were born of parents who fought a world war, survived a depression, and ultimately saved our nation through a second world war. I am proud to know that they endured these challenges with the intent of passing a better world to us. July marks the two-year anniversary of when Calabash Volunteer Emergency Medical Services gave the Calabash V.E.M.S. Thrift Store to Brunswick Senior Resources Inc., to continue the mission of serving the local community and county seniors. The thrift store represented an opportunity to add funding to important programs, services, and the expansion of senior centers. I want to

Jim Fish, BSRI President and CEO

thank the residents of Calabash, Carolina Shores, and Sunset Beach for supporting the thrift store with donations and volunteers. It has been a great two years and we expect it will only get better!

Renovations on the new Calabash Area Senior Center began June 19 with Gorka Construction beginning interior demolition. Completion of all work is expected in the spring of 2018. The new Calabash Senior Center is about 12,000 sq. ft. and is situated on nearly five acres of land FROM THE CEO, continued on page 4

in downtown Calabash. Its location will provide easy access to all local amenities and businesses. A modular structure was placed in front of the new center to house Briar Patch Florist and Gifts during construction. BSRI is seeking community support from residents, business and local nonprofits to assist with needed supplies, furnishings, donations, etc. that will be nonbudgeted items for the new Calabash area center. A goal of $100,000 has been set to meet that need. If you would like to make a contribution, please call (910) 754-2300 and ask for Debra Marlowe. We are roughly at the midpoint of the hurricane season for our region. The National Weather Service is predicting aboveaverage activity this year. We encourage anyone who may have difficulty evacuating, for health or other reasons, to register with

Services. Registration can be done through the Brunswick County website. If you have trouble using a computer or need other assistance, please ask a senior center or site manager to assist. In the event of an emergency, personnel will be sent to your home to assist with evacuation. As we experience the warmer weather of the summer months, please take the necessary precautions to maintain safe temperatures in your homes and monitor your activity schedules. For those who do not have air conditioning at home, BSRI has a limited number of fans available that we are happy to provide to you. Our goal is to help our senior community be healthy and safe. If you are in need of a fan, please call (910) 754-2300. Stay safe!

Susan Whitley has been named director of the new Brunswick Center at Supply beginning July 1. Whitley has been director of the Brunswick Center at Southport for more than five years. She previously served as Leland Center director and was activity coordinator for Stanly County Senior Services. “I am super excited about bringing activities and services to the Supply community,” Whitley said. “Getting to know the people and being closer to home are both awesome!” The new Supply Center on Stone Chimney Road brings together participants from the former Sunset Harbor and Lockwood Folly senior sites. New participants have been registering since that opening and the facility opens as a full senior center July 1. Whitley has plenty of plans, including a goal for the new center to become a NC Senior Center of Excellence as soon as possible. The Brunswick Centers at Southport, Shallotte, and Leland received this honored designation in 2016. Some of the former staff will remain at Supply. Gloria Pieczarka will stay at the Supply Center as Nutrition Coordinator, and Karen Kirkman will help out as needed. Although she’s excited about the new position, leaving Southport has its sorrows, Whitley said. “I will miss the people at Southport most, and my staff,” she said.

SHIIP

RALEIGH— North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced that the efforts of the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) county coordinating sites helped North Carolina Medicare beneficiaries save more than $44 million in 2016. SHIIP, a division of the N.C. Department of Insurance, trains coordinators and volunteers at partnering agencies such as Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI) to provide free, unbiased counseling about Medicare. In 2016, BSRI assisted 4,570

consumers in Brunswick County, and saved Brunswick County residents $1,908,507. “Many retirees and Medicare beneficiaries are on a fixed income and want to save money wherever they can,” Causey said. SHIIP counselors help Medicare beneficiaries compare Part D Prescription Drug Plans each year during the Open Enrollment Period, Oct. 15 – Dec. 7, to determine the most affordable plan that meets their needs in the coming year. SHIIP can also help people apply for the Extra Help lowincome subsidy and other

Medicare cost-savings programs. SHIIP can answer questions about Medicare, Medicare Part D, Medicare supplement, Medicare Advantage, and long term care insurance. SHIIP also helps citizens recognize and prevent Medicare billing errors and possible fraud and abuse through our N.C. Senior Medicare Patrol program. If you have questions about Medicare or Extra Help, contact SHIIP at (855) 408-1212 to speak with a counselor, or contact your local BSRI SHIIP coordinating site at (910) 754-2300.

Food

By Mallory Balice Program Specialist We all have one bad habit that causes us to gain extra weight. All bad habits start slowly and gradually, before you know it you have the habit, and the habit has you. Here are some ways to break bad eating habits that can cause you to pack on unwanted pounds.

When you skip meals, it may cause you to overeat later in the day. Eating breakfast actually gives you the essential energy you need to power-start your day. Lean protein,

whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are excellent choices for a wellbalanced breakfast.

We all enjoy snacking, but we often snack on high calorie foods like chips, soda, and chocolate because they are convenient. Instead, try to keep healthy snacks in sight such as hummus, vegetables, yogurt, and almonds.

Meal prepping on the weekend saves time during the week. Choose foods that you can make in advance, such as a batch of soup that you can portion out during the week for dinner. Making meals at home doesn’t have to take up all your time and energy. Changing your eating habits will not happen overnight, but making small changes will get you closer to a healthy lifestyle!

The Great American Eclipse

All Eyes on the Sky Photo by Fred Myers

A

n excellent educator must have great knowledge and passion. Fred Myers, from right here in Brunswick County, has both. Myers is sharing how to understand, prepare for, and enjoy a very rare event that is coming near to us in August: a total solar eclipse of the sun.

Millions of Americans across the United States will be able to view one of the greatest astronomical events of the century on August 21 when a total solar eclipse will be visible from a narrow band of land that will stretch from Oregon to South Carolina (and a small part of western North Carolina). Myers’s presentation shares interesting facts about the moon, and how the sun, moon, and earth interact to produce eclipses. He provides details regarding the best locations to view the Great American Eclipse, and describes the areas from which a partial eclipse will be visible. The splendor of the total eclipse will just miss Brunswick County, but from here we will enjoy a major partial eclipse of the sun—about 96

to 98 percent of the sun’s disk will be blocked. A large region of South Carolina will be in the bull’s-eye of the total eclipse. Myers emphasizes the importance of viewing the eclipse with proper eye protection. While supplies last, attendees at his presentations will receive a pair of approved eclipse eye glasses. Additional glasses may be purchased at Ingram Planetarium and at www.great americaneclipse.com, and other vendors. You may wish to order early as demand is expected to be high.

Born in Bellefonte, Pa., Myers is the youngest of three sons of Fred, Sr., a Navy, World War II veteran and machinist, and Madeline Myers, a homemaker. When Myers was 5, the family moved to Vestal, N.Y., where he became an avid baseball fan and player. During his high school years, he developed an interest in journalism, and served as editor in chief for his high school newspaper, The Bear Facts, during his senior year. That year, Myers also enrolled in a physics class. That was a turning point in his life because he had found a subject that he truly loved. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics at State University of New

York at Geneseo and a master’s degree in physics and astrophysics at State University of New York at Stony Brook. He says that his success with physics was not a result of his natural talents, but his strong work ethic and dedication which has helped him throughout his professional life.

During his college years Myers found great pleasure in explaining physics and astrophysics principles to non-scientists, and that uncovered his passion for teaching. Myers taught physics and astronomy for 33 years at three public and independent high schools, and served as a science department chair for 14 of those years. He earned an additional degree in administration and supervision and devoted the last nine years of his formal career as K-12 Director of Science in Glastonbury Public Schools, Glastonbury, Ct. Myers became a nationally known science educator because of his leadership in the “physics first” movement, which called for radical changes in the sequence in which science should be taught in high schools. His body of work as a science educator was recognized with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, the Milken Family Foundation Educator Award, the Christa McAuliffe

The Great American Eclipse Fellowship Award, and the AAPT Janet Guernsey Award for Excellence in Physics Teaching.

Photography is another passion of Myers’s. He was the founder and long-time president of the Wallingford Camera Club, where he met his wife Bonny. Their blended family includes four children: Fred Richard Myers, III, a rocket scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center assigned to the James Webb Space Telescope mission (a part of NASA's ongoing flagship program which will replace the Hubble Space Telescope); McKenzie Gentry, an engineer responsible for storm water management for Durham County; Jennifer Thompson, Child Protective Services, Fort Worth, Tx.; and Dan Hill, Television Management/Television Ratings, Nielson Corporation. While raising children and maintaining careers, Fred and Bonny Myers found time to take pictures and travel, visiting 48 of the 50 states. “I have a profound love of this country, and we enjoy visiting the small towns and back roads,” Myers said. In 2015, the couple relocated to Brunswick County. They are members of the Cape Fear Camera Club and Brunswick Newcomers Club in Southport. Myers stays active by playing pickleball, softball, and the occasional round of golf. He volunteers at Ingram Planetarium in Sunset Beach, and is serving as curriculum architect for the new K-12 science curriculum being developed by Great Minds, based in Washington, D.C.

Happy Independence Day!

By Linda Walters

T

his year, our great nation will celebrate its 241st birthday. While I have not been present in all 241 celebrations, I have had at least 65 years that I can recall with humility, love, and patriotism. My earliest celebrations as a child were filled with wonder and delight. Growing up in a small West Virginia mining community, we cherished holidays. The Fourth of July quickly became my favorite because our family gathered together to celebrate with food, fun, and fellowship. One fond memory is my father taking us to the local drive-in theater to watch the fireworks. Dad and Mom would stand outside the car as my brothers and I sat on a blanket on the hood munching popcorn Mom popped at home. I could hardly wait for the action to begin as I watched the theater snack bar commercial on the movie screen. Cartoon hot dogs marched

around, big cups of soda danced, and the announcer's manly voice through the speakers let everyone know what goodies awaited in the snack bar. Dusk finally arrived and glorious color filled the sky. Later, family gatherings included our extended family in Southwest Virginia. We celebrated with a potluck picnic: fried chicken, potato salad, green beans cooked straight from home gardens, along with red, ripe tomatoes. The table was loaded with food and desserts made with loving hands from some of the greatest cooks one could hope for. Ice cream came in five-gallon buckets from a local dairy. At dusk, the children would run around with lit sparklers while the adults entertained with fireworks. Living in a coastal area now, I have many opportunities to celebrate. We have celebrated with a small community parade, attended the historical Southport festivities, and watched fireworks from the bank of the Intracoastal Waterway and right on our street at home.

Austin, 2, wears the colors of the flag as he celebrates July 4th, 2011 on wheels.

Every year the wonderful memories come flooding back. It is with love that I smile as I see in my mind those beloved ones who have gone before me. My heart overflows with gratitude for the young men and women who served and are currently serving in the military, some with great sacrifice, to guarantee our freedom. Long live America!

Linda Walters and husband Mike wave the red, white and blue along wth a red-and-white Ford Mainline at the Walters Fourth of July parade in 2012.

July 31, 1pm-2:30pm A historic total solar eclipse will occur in the United States this year—August 21. This will be a very rare event that is sure to garner a lot of media attention and will be enjoyed by millions of Americans. The only other eclipse in the U.S. within our lifetimes will be in 2024, but the conditions for that one won’t be as good as this year’s eclipse. This presentation is intended to help people become more knowledgeable about eclipses and how to prepare for the upcoming eclipse so that it is a great experience. The presentation by Fred Myers, Astrophysicist, will feature brief presentations about our place in space, some amazing things about the Moon, and how the Sun, Moon, and Earth interact to produce eclipses. The presenter will relate some of his experiences from an eclipse in 1972, and then provide details about where to be, what to expect, and how to prepare for the Great American Eclipse of 2017. Questions will be entertained throughout. To find out more about Mr. Myers, please see on page 10!
