eep your eyes open for something cool happening very soon: the grand opening of our newest senior center, the Brunswick Center at Calabash. Although we’re still waiting for approvals to set a date, most of the finishing touches are in place and staff has been hired (see page 7). We’re excited for the possibilities at the new Calabash Center, and you’re all invited to check it out when opening day is announced! Ask at your local center for a date. It takes a lot of people to create a new center—and it takes a lot of people to create the Buzz each month, too. Every senior center and site in Brunswick County must make a calendar and information pages for the Buzz each month. Staff members keep us posted on events at each center, like the Sock Hop July 28 (see page 26). Staff may write columns, collect obituaries, or work on ad sales that help defray printing costs. That’s in addition to their regular duties! So don’t be surprised to see some of these diligent people on this page from time to time. One staff member we’ll miss is Susan Whitley, longtime editor of the Buzz and former director at both Southport and Supply. We will miss her knowledge, her assistance, and her sense of humor. Good luck, Susan. Shelagh Clancy Editor, Brunswick Senior Buzz Newsletters.bsri@gmail.com
Letter from a Director
I
t is hard to believe it has been almost a year since I began working for Brunswick Senior Resources. Flashback to the first day I was here, July 24, 2017. I remember feeling a bit awkward when I could not even open the front door and needed help getting in the building, when a very nice lady opened it for me. Photo by Irene Dowdy
Cover photographer Irene Dowdy caught a Brunswick County sunrise at the moment it turned the whole world gold. Dowdy is a charter member of the Coastal Carolina Camera Club and has won many awards for her photographs of Brunswick County’s natural beauty.
I went inside to meet with Susan Whitley. Susan had decided to leave the Southport Center for the new Supply center. She approached me with a warm smile, and somehow I knew we would always be friends. Boy, was I right. Susan showed me the ropes and has always been available to answer my questions. She never called any of my questions dumb (and a LOT of them were,) and she showed me the utmost

patience and hospitality. My first week on the job, we worked together to put on a baby shower and had so much fun! We had a lot to talk about with both our backgrounds being in aging, LETTER, continued on page 6

and we developed a wonderful friendship in the process. I felt like I had always known her and that we would always have a connection. I am so happy that came to pass. Imagine my surprise and dismay when I learned that Susan was leaving BSRI in June. I called her and told her she couldn’t leave, and to please reconsider. She assured me she would not be far and would still be available if I needed anything. I continued to beg her not to leave through her last day, but my efforts were in vain. Susan stuck to her plan and her last day was June 1. I still want to pick up the phone and call her daily. I still want to ask her all of my questions. I want her to know how special she is to me and to the Southport team. Thank you, Susan, for being an amazing co-worker, trainer and above all, friend. I am fortunate to have you in my life. I love that you are holding an “Aloha” sign in your picture. The word aloha has many meanings to Hawaiians. Mostly they use it to say hello or goodbye, but the true meaning of the word is love, peace, and compassion, which is perfect for you, Susan. Aloha, Beautiful. You are greatly missed.

Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. welcomes Angelique Carlson as director of the new Brunswick Center at Calabash, which will open soon. Carlson works with seniors 55 and older to connect through fitness, social, and educational opportunities. Carlson believes that creating an inclusive center where members have access to vital community services can help members remain healthy and independent. Carlson previously worked at Pretty In Pink Foundation, where she assisted breast cancer
survivors with appropriate resources and partnered with local and national agencies to secure vital funding for survivors’ medical needs. “I’m most proud of my work in creating the Senior Resiliency Project in Indianapolis,” Carlson said. There she secured funding through grants, donations, and in-kind donations to help senior neighbors create community disaster plans. More than 2500 seniors who attended the programs reported an increased sense of safety. Many formed new friendships and became active in their neighborhood.
Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. has added Holley Norris as assistant director at the soon-to-open Brunswick Center at Calabash. “While I was born and raised in Whiteville, Brunswick County has always been the place I call home,” Norris said.
Carlson has been awarded the Volunteer Innovator Partnership Award from the United Way, and is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Louisville. She looks forward to meeting all the BSRI participants in Calabash.

THRIFT STORE THROWBACK By Mike McGurn, Thrift Store Operations Manager Welcome to Thrift Store Throwback! Each month we feature some interesting and unique items that have come through our Thrift Store in Calabash, to bring back fond memories of the Good Old Days! One of the great things about BSRI's Thrift Store in Calabash is you never know what truly amazing item you will find. The Steel Pier is a 1,000-footlong amusement park and entertainment venue built on a
pier in Atlantic City, N.J. It was built in 1898 and was hugely popular for decades. The Steel Pier is still around, though its glory is somewhat faded now. This pier program from May 1967 surfaced at the BSRI Thrift Store in Calabash. It showcases some of the big acts to play at the pier, including Dionne Warwick, Freddy and the Dreamers, the Rolling Stones, the Animals, the Supremes, Soupy Sales, and the Four Seasons. We bet some Brunswick County residents have memories of this famous venue. Do you

What Causes Lupus?
What is Lupus? Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and pain to various parts of the body. Symptoms of lupus can be the same as other chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid disease, etc. Some of these symptoms include:
Fatigue
Anemia
Swelling
Hair Loss
Blood Clotting
Rash
Headache
Genetics, hormones, and your environment can cause lupus. Women are more prone to Lupus. How Is Lupus Treated? The goal is to reduce inflammation and control joint pain
and fatigue. There are many prescribed medications physicians can use to keep your lupus symptoms under control. Even though there is no known cure for lupus, the prognosis has become better than in years before. People who have lupus are expected to live a normal life span. Lupus does vary in strength; some people may have mild to moderate symptoms.
What is lupus? Visit the National Resource Center on Lupus to learn more: resources.lupus.org/entry/what-is-lupus
As long as you take your prescribed medications and follow the doctor’s orders, you can keep lupus symptoms under control.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting a normal or above-normal hurricane season this year. That means we can expect 10 to 16 named storms, and between five and nine of those will be hurricanes. One to four are expected to be major hurricanes, Category 3 or higher. Preparation is key in any hurricane season. Get your hurricane kit together, prepare for a period without power after a storm, and keep emergency supplies and numbers at hand.
Get Outta Dodge! Fred Myers took this photo of an approaching storm at Oak Island. The photo took first place in a recent photography competition at the Cape Fear Camera Club in Wilmington and was displayed at the SilverArts show at the Leland Cultural Arts Center. “It was an ominous-looking approaching storm ... but when it arrived it wasn't that bad,” Myers says.
Hurricanes and tropical storms may cause power outages and dangerous driving conditions. BSRI wants our participants, volunteers, and staff to be safe, so we will shut down during hazardous weather. Here’s how to find out what’s going on during a storm:

t was election day in 2016, and Coastal Cottage Shoppe’s owner DiAne Benzie called out, “I don’t care who you vote for as long as you vote Coastal and shop with us!” That’s when Coastal Cottage Shoppe opened its doors and welcomed their first customers into a world of painted furniture, home décor, local art, painted signs, lighting, driftwood, and gift items. DiAne and her husband Chris moved to Southport in 2015. After retiring from 30 years in the corporate world, DiAne became bored and wanted to do something

I occasionally ride along with volunteers who do Meals on Wheels. It’s a chance for me to be able to tell other new volunteers what it means to do Meals on Wheels. Its amazing to see the volunteers in action and how much they care about the people they deliver meals to. In a simple two hours, maybe once a week out of their time, they are not only delivering a meal, but making lifelong connections. I had a thought while riding along with the two volunteers above: This opportunity to touch the lives of those around us is so much more than just delivering a meal. This gives people the chance to stay connected. As humans, one of our biggest longings is to have other human connection. These interactions not only benefit the senior receiving the meal, but equally benefit the volunteer. Being able to disconnect from our busy lives and simply be kind and serve others can bring so much positive energy into our lives. We have to stay connected, connected to ourselves, connected to the life around us. Our livelihood depends on good connections and positive perspective. It’s easy for anyone, myself included, to get caught up with the small things in life that ultimately don’t have much merit in our lives. Doing Meals on Wheels (or volunteering in another way) takes you to a place where the only thing that matters is making someone else's day just a little bit better. It’s a time to go out on a journey, clearing your head and paying attention to the function of life all around us. It’s a time to understand time and the value of time. Serving others is the ultimate key to a rich life. ̶ Sarah Powell, Volunteer Coordinator

he dog days of summer are typically the time for vegetable gardens to go on vacation. While the vegetable garden is dormant, now is a good time to propagate new plants. If you have been admiring your neighbor’s prized roses, ask permission to take a hardwood cutting. The cutting should be 8 to 10 inches long. Choose stems that are neither brand new nor fully mature and have fading flowers or flowers that just lost their petals. A stem with a flower bud showing no color is too young. Take cuttings from the upper part of the plant or from the sides. Using a razor blade or sharp pruning shears, make a clean slice at a 45 degree angle. The angle will maximize the rooting area. Most cuttings root best if the slice is made just below a leaf node (where branches come out of the stem).
Roses root best in bright light. Set them in a window. Providing bottom warmth from a heat mat will help promote root growth, but avoid overheating the cuttings. Keep the growing medium moist and wait until roots appear, usually in three to four weeks. Slowly harden off your new plants before transplanting them to the great outdoors. The vegetable garden is taking a rest in the hot weather, so it’s a good time to propogate plants from cuttings. These rose cuttings are cut at an angle to maximize rooting area.
the cutting into place. Cover with a mayonnaise jar or put the whole container in a plastic
The same steps can be used to propagate soft-stem shrubs, annuals, and perennials. After a couple of months you can give your neighborhood a gift of a new plant they can admire. Visit bcmastergardenerva.org for more information on gardens, lawns, and landscapes in Brunswick County.
Remove flowers or buds from the cutting, as well as any lower leaves. Cut the remaining leaves in half to reduce moisture loss through transpiration. Also, less foliage will maximize the amount of energy the cutting can expend on developing roots, as opposed to maintaining the leaves. Quickly dip the bottom two inches of the cutting into a cloning solution or rooting hormone. Rooting hormone is not always necessary, but will greatly improve your success rate. Using a pencil, make a small hole in the potting soil or other growing medium for the stem to fit into, and gently tamp
Ask your neighbors for cuttings of plants you have admired in their yards. Roses and other shrubs, annuals, and perennials can be propagated in this way.

hen it’s so hot you prefer iced tea to a tee time, try one of these golf books to while away the indoor hours. Honour: A Historical Golf Novel (2012) by Richard O’Connor is the story of lifelong friendship between two fictional characters and their interaction with historical figures of golf from 1909 to 1919. This period was an upheaval in golf’s high-falutin’ status when the hoi polloi invaded the golf scene. Real life professionals Bobby Jones and Walter Hagan and amateur Francis Ouimet feature in this story with all the right elements: intrigue, sex, drink and drugs and drama and … golf. Lots of golf. Lots of history. Nutshell review: The century-old clash between elite and everyday
golfers eerily resonates with our society today in a must-read book. Calabash author J. Peter Hoyer shares forty years of golf stories in Characters on the Green: Everyday Golfers are the Real Character of the Game (2016). The occasional political insertion diluted my pleasure in the author’s many interesting characters and a bragging -rights list of golf courses. Despite this one bogey, Mr. Hoyer’s desire for “better than most” describes his book to a tee! I laughed out loud at a rained-out game involving his wife, chuckled through his experience with “Bingo, Bango, Bungo,” and thoroughly enjoyed my favorite chapter, Gadgets. Nutshell review: Spend a few hours off the course and come away with a greater appreciation for the game
and the personal integrity it inspires. The setting for The Back Nine: A Novel about Life after Fifty (2016) is a golf club of mainly retired folks and their efforts to beat a competing team of younger players. E. A. Briginshaw introduces us to grandparents, members of the sandwich generation, and folks who realize they are not as flexible as they were earlier in life. The characters deal with a variety of drama: dementia, strained marriages, and friendships and clashes with other golfers. I sped through this book and ended up content with the conclusions of all the diverse narratives. Nutshell review: Enjoy this easy-to-read novel with plenty of action and heart by a master of prose and obvious lover of golf.
