uly is our hottest month, and many North Carolinians take refuge in air conditioning or trips to cooler climates. In the evening, as sun gets lower in the sky, we may venture to the beach. But those born and raised here know it wasn’t always so. Many grew up in houses with windows wide open and porches that gathered the breeze. People just moved more slowly in summer, and everyone wore a hat and sought the shade. We have some suggestions for how to keep cool this July. See page 6 for hot weather tips tailored for seniors, and learn about Operation Fan Heat Relief and Fran’s Fans on page 7. If you have guests coming this summer, plan ahead for days that are too hot or too rainy for the beach, and get some ideas of alternative fun in our story on page 13. One great way to cool off is at our senior centers. It’s the best way to get exercise when it’s just too hot to take a walk. And then there are the “floaters.” I have joined this group more times than I’d like to admit. We get caught up in the busyness of our days, only to look up and find it’s that special date with nothing planned to mark or acknowledge it. We put the celebration off or “float” the date to another day when it can be celebrated as intended (or procrastinated away).

We have weathered the storm of Hurricane Florence and a temporary relocation. We returned in 2019 with renewed vigor, adding many new faces to our staff and participants while creating more programs and events for our community seniors. Oh, what an eventful two years this has been for the entire Supply family! I too will be celebrating this July. It’s my first anniversary with Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. as center director for the Supply Center. There is so much to be grateful for

Talk with your doctor and be aware of the medications you take. For example, painkillers can reduce awareness of the heat, and diuretics can lead to dehydration.

Use electric fans.

Cool off by taking showers, or with ice bags or wet towels .

Stay out of direct sunlight, put shades on windows, and use crossventilation and fans to cool rooms.

Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Drink plenty of liquids such as water, juice, and iced tea to replace the fluids lost by sweating. As a person ages, thirst declines. Limit alcoholic beverages or fluids with salt which can complicate medical problems

every day. Thanks to my colleagues and the center participants, I have felt supported and welcomed as I made my way in a new job, new home, and new community to live in and serve. I have been a part of a thriving organization that puts the needs of seniors first and foremost in everything they do and in the decisions they make. I could not ask for more, other than to celebrate this milestone with everyone. We will officially celebrate our Second Center Anniversary on Monday, July 15 at 12:30 p.m. Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be served. Come join us in celebration as we continue to strive to reimagine aging for the communities we serve. —Melissa Starr, Director The Brunswick Center at Supply

such as high blood pressure. 

Eat small meals more often and avoid foods that are high in protein, which increases body heat.

Keep medicines in a cool, dry place.

Check up on friends or neighbors who live alone.

Join your local senior center or take advantage of buildings made accessible to seniors during excessive heat.

Take the heat seriously. Watch for danger signs like nausea, dizziness or lightheadedness, fatigue, confusion, labored breathing, chest discomfort ,and rapid or erratic pulse. Get to a cool place, drink cool water slowly, and seek medical help if conditions don’t improve.

BSRI News

By Jennifer Sherman Director of Case Management Both chronic medical conditions and medications can worsen the impact of extreme heat. Since 1986, Operation Fan Heat Relief (OFHR) has purchased fans to provide a more comfortable living environment and reduce heat-related illnesses for older adults and adults with disabilities. Duke Energy Progress, Duke Energy Carolinas, Dominion Resources, and the Valassis Giving Committee have made contributions through the Division of Aging and Adult Services to Area Agencies on

Aging to purchase fans in support of this summer program. Air conditioners can be provided on a client-specific basis for adults with more serious health-related illnesses (a prescription from a physician is required). If you are at risk, please take advantage of OFHR and stay safe this summer. Please see a case manager for details, or call (910) 754-2300. First come, first serve. The OFHR program runs from May 1 to

October 31. This generous funding doesn’t meet the ongoing need for our area. Please participate in the upcoming Fran’s Fans community drive to expand this program to meet this need. The date of Fran’s Fan community drive will be announced soon on our website and WECT. If you would like to donate a fan or a monetary donation, please contact Jennifer Sherman at (910) 754-6297 or visit our website.

By Mike McGurn, BSRI Thrift Store Operations Manager This month the Thrift Store and BSRI would like to throw back a big thank you to the Calabash VFW Post 7288 for their recent $1,000 donation. Margie Sears, Calabash VFW member and BSRI Thrift Store employee, presented the check to Thrift Store Operations Manager Mike McGurn; Brunswick Center at Calabash Director Courtney Bledsoe; and Brunswick Center at Calabash Assistant Director Holley Norris at the Calabash Thrift Store. In a letter that accompanied the donation, Calabash VFW Post Commander Daniel J. Kossler, Jr. wrote that every quarter the post grants $1,000 to an organization dedicated to help those in need. They often focus on helping veterans and in the past have donated to the Fisher House at Fort Bragg and the National Home for Children in Michigan. This time the Post wanted to give to an organization closer to home. Post Quartermaster Bill McCormick informed members about all the good work BSRI has been doing for the Calabash community, especially since opening the Brunswick Center

In Our Centers

More than Dancing

By Beth Klahre The Brunswick Center at Southport’s ballet class includes some tap moves for fun. Dancers use chairs for a makeshift ballet barre and when the toe work is done, get tapping. Front row, left to right: Kathy Amber, Maureen Terman, Judy Veno. Second row: Peggy Lacey, Ginny Gorman, and far right, instructor Caryl Voorhees. Last row: Eileen Soderberg, Beth Klahre.

f classical piano music meanders into the hallway from the gym at the Brunswick Center at Southport, it must be Wednesday! A group of women aged 55 to 78 is paying close attention to Caryl Voorhees, who is teaching ballet class in French. After the last pas de bourrée, the music gets hopping and the tapping begins. Laughter rolls out of the gym enticing curious passersby to peek in. And center director Melissa Catlett is thrilled to watch it unfold.

The instruction is professional and disciplined. Voorhees grew up dancing with the Russian Bolshoi Ballet and the Leningrad Kirov Ballet. She started teaching dance in her New Jersey home in 1989 to her three daughters and their 13 friends. She turned her passion into a thriving business, chronicled in her book, “Dancing for Joy.” Voorhees sold her studio in 2007 and retired at the beach, but never retired her love of dance. For the last

four years, she has been teaching ballet as a volunteer. In 2017 she added tap to the repertoire.

Voorhees laughs when she compares teaching young children to teaching seniors. “My seniors are much easier to teach than some of the children, whom I often caught swinging on the barre and licking the mirror! I have to remember that we are older now. We benefit greatly from a proper warm-up and review

In Our Centers of the basic dance steps each week.” She speaks proudly of her senior dancers. “They are amazing! They come with an eagerness to learn the graceful techniques of classical ballet and have a great time making lots of noise with their tap shoes.” The students love Voorhees and unanimously agree that she is super fun, talented, and professional. The group had some funny moments learning Voorhees’s choreographed tap routine to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” Dancers moving in all the wrong directions made everyone laugh. But Caryl’s exuberant, positive personality encouraged everyone to do her best.

Not everyone who attends has childhood dance experience. Eileen Soderberg from Oak Island saw a sign for the class on the bulletin board. “I have always been interested in ballet even though I didn’t take lessons as a child. I danced for a season after college.” She dances now because she “likes the movement and control of ballet and the challenge of tap.” Peggy Lacey intends to “put a

checkmark on her bucket list to learn to tap.” And Ginny Gorman, one of the two most senior dancers, always dreamed of learning to tap. She says, “This is a great way to get moving.” For Kathy Amber of Oak Island, it’s more than dancing. “The feeling of being part of a group, accepted no matter how I dance, lifts me up.” Free classes resume this fall. Everyone is welcome.

In this class, there are no mirrors or ballet barres. Backs of chairs serve as makeshift barres for balance. There are no recitals. And thankfully, say the dancers, no tutus. Judy Veno is one of Voorhees’s first students. “I have always enjoyed watching dance performances and found it’s even more enjoyable to participate! Dancing is great exercise. Moving to the beautiful music is so relaxing. I love the challenge of learning combinations of tap steps.” Alicia Williamson recently relocated to Southport. She recalls dancing as a child. “I have a lot of affection for those dance classes. I was thrilled to see a ballet and tap class for people in our age range. And everyone here is charming and welcoming.”

Maureen Terman practices her ballet moves in the Southport ballet class, which is on summer hiatus and will begin again in the fall.

Volunteers

A Healthy Community and Healthy Volunteers “Volunteering is more than essential to the Community. It is a big part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle.”

By Lillith Camp, SECU-sponsored BSRI summer intern from UNCW The activities and services offered by Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. rely heavily on volunteers from the community. It is because of selfless and dedicated volunteers that we are able to serve Brunswick County’s rapidly-growing senior population. From Meals on Wheels to Medicare counseling, our volunteers work hard to keep seniors in our area happy, healthy, and independent. Volunteering with BSRI not only benefits the community, but also the emotional wellness and physical health of the volunteer themselves. While the act of volunteering was created to help others, it has proved to also be beneficial for the volunteer. Volunteering has been linked to improving psychological well-being. This includes reductions in stress, anger, depression, and anxiety. These reductions create room for self-confidence, happiness, and a sense of purpose to grow. Volunteers are able to forge meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships with other volunteers and the seniors they serve.

Why volunteering also important to keeping a balanced community: 2,174 seniors age 65 and up are living below the poverty line in Brunswick County! Become a volunteer for BSRI: Email if interested to: Spowell@bsrinc.org Or fill out an online application at www.bsrinc.org/volunteers

Lillith Camp is an intern in the volunteer department this summer. She is a rising senior at UNCW studying psychology.

Volunteering has the ability to influence physical health. Individuals who are active in their community have been shown to have lower mortality rates and lower rates of heart disease than those of the same age who do not volunteer. According to “Volunteering and its Surprising Benefits” by Dr. Jeanne Segal and Lawrence Robinson, volunteers are also less likely to develop high blood pressure. These health benefits can be attributed to the fact that volunteers are active when serving their community. They are on their feet and moving around, even if it does not feel like the typical workout. According to “8 Long-Term Health Benefits of Volunteering” by Claire Shinn, there have even been recent research studies examining the relationship between volunteering and a reduction in the progression of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

hen the weather gets warm, those of us who live near the beach stock up on extra sunscreen, fresh toothbrushes and beach towels, and assorted sandcastle toys for the influx of visitors from afar who descend upon our homes in summer. Whether guests are staying for just a few days or longer, keep a list of potential excursions for day or evening in case weather or sunburn keep you from hitting the beach. Check various Brunswick County website listings for events such as the evening concerts and festivals.

These excursions will take just a morning or afternoon. Take a stroll down the main street of Calabash to discover interesting souvenirs, peruse treasures at the thrift shops, or eat Calabash seafood at one of the many establishments that hug the Intracoastal. If you are lucky you can purchase freshly caught shrimp right on the docks. Although many think of the Museum of Coastal Carolina as a place for little ones (great touch tanks!) their shark and dolphin shows and exhibits about local sea life are for all ages.

For an all-day outing, there’s plenty within an hour’s drive north or south. Take the ferry to Fort Fisher, which boasts a state aquarium and the historic civil war fort that gives the area its name. You can tour the grounds and marvel over the

many exhibits in the museum that chronicle the great sea battle that took place here in the last days of the Civil War. Heading south, visit Ripley’s Aquarium, or head a bit more west to the Horry County Museum in Conway and the nearby L.W. Paul Living History Farm that recreates an early 20th-century farm in the area. A slightly longer drive will take you to the wonders of Brookgreen Gardens, with an outdoor sculpture museum. If you like wandering around quaint seaside towns that offer colonial history, quirky stores, great places to eat seafood, and restful parks where you and your guests can relax, then head to either Southport in Brunswick County, or down U.S. 17 past Brookgreen Gardens to Georgetown, S.C.

In the Garden

By Pat Naughton Applying the right amount of water in the correct locations is key to saving money and having a green lawn. Watering a typical 5,000sq.-ft. yard with a half inch of water uses 1,558 gallons of water. That costs close to $5 each time. According to the N.C. State Extension Turfiles website, lawn grasses of Bermudagrass, Centipede, and St. Augustine need one inch of water a week. Zoysia grass needs 1 ¼ inch of water a week. On sandy soils, you can water ½ inch every third day for all these grasses. To determine what each section of the lawn is receiving from the spray, place an empty short can (such as a tuna can) on the lawn. After an irrigation cycle, check the water depth and adjust the timer and spray accordingly to achieve a half inch of water per watering.

The typical irrigation head can be adjusted for start point, finish point, and spray length. To change the starting point, unscrew the head from the canister. Find the center cap on the rotor case. Move it all the way to the right until it stops and you can no longer turn it. Then, move it to the left until it stops. This is the starting point. Keeping the arrow aimed at the

problems such as gray leaf spot.

To adjust the finish point you will need an adjustment key, which are available at major hardware stores. Insert the plastic end of the key in the rotation slot marked with “+” and “–” directions. Turn the key to the + direction to increase the arc and to the – to reduce the direction.

Brunswick County Master Gardeners will present a series of short, timely topics for local gardeners and provide an opportunity to ask your garden questions. There is no charge. The following sessions are offered at the Leland Library:

The final adjustment is the spray length. This is adjusted by inserting the metal end of the key above the nozzle. There is a screw which interferes with the spray to change the length. Turning the screw in will decrease the length.

The best time to water your lawn is in the early morning hours, between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., when temperatures are cooler and the evaporation rate is low. Avoid watering between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. Watering at these times can extend the leaf wetness period created by dew, which can increase disease

Read All About It

By Donna Ruth Morgan

T

o celebrate our country’s birthday this July Fourth, turn to some patriotic reading. These choices are available at Brunswick County libraries.

Gary Sinise’s dedication to America’s military and first responders and their families stands out in the pages of Grateful American: A Journey from Self to Service (2018). Readers will enjoy the inspiring backstories of the author’s life and reflections on his theatre, film, and television work. The Lt. Dan character—a Vietnamwounded paraplegic in the movie Forest Gump—gave name to his band that performs in USO shows and raises funds for disabled veterans. His personal history and the research he did for Lt. Dan and his TV role in CSI: NY role as a haunted Gulf War vet steered Mr. Sinise into giving back. Love of family and country create a story shining with the author’s modesty and spirituality. Nutshell Review: This is a man anyone would be proud to meet and thank. The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations by John McCain and co-authored by Mark Salter (2018) piqued my curiosity about a man whose “accumulated memories” had gathered such weight. I struggled through over-long accounts of insider politics, incessant

name-dropping, and arguments that Mr. McCain’s political philosophies were superior to the average American’s. Nutshell review: The book fell short of my expectations for being illuminated (rather than entertained) by this man’s final reflections on his life and legacy. Sacred Duty: A Soldier's Tour at Arlington National Cemetery (2019) by Senator Tom Cotton is a meticulouslyresearched history of the U.S. Army’s Old Guard, the oldest active duty infantry regiment. Personal accounts of the author escorting flag-draped coffins of soldiers and participating in hundreds of military funerals for service members demonstrate his compassion and honor for those brave servants. Nutshell Review: The author, a true patriot and decorated war hero, writes only briefly about himself with focus on America’s most sacred shrine and the duty owed to our fallen. Senior Spotlight Meet Elsie! Elsie was born on January 11, 1937 in Autryville, North Carolina. She grew up on her Grandma Taylor’s farm with her parents until her father was able to purchase his own farm. Elsie spent many years helping her family farm tobacco and cotton. One of Elsie’s fondest recollections is when her mother saved “cotton burr” to be able to purchase a furniture set. Once married, Elsie and her husband moved to Wilmington and had three children, a daughter and two sons. Once her children were older, Elsie began working in the sewing industry. Twenty years later, Elsie returned to Autryville where she met her late husband and relocated to Leland, where she has now lived for 22 years. She enjoys spending time with her family, especially her two grandsons, and coming to the Brunswick Center at Leland to socialize with friends while having coffee. Elsie has a generous spirit; she is always eager to help out with activities, offer words of encouragement or bring in delicious apples to share! When asked to share some words of wisdom, she replied, “I am 82 and a half and when I wake up in the morning, I thank God he is starting me off on a new day and for being in my life!” Thank you, Elsie, for making us smile. We are beyond lucky to have you! -Interviewed by Jade Robinson

SHIIP

By M. René Tarquinio, LBSW Case Manager/ SHIIP Co-Coordinator

A

stroke is a brain attack caused by blocked blood flow to the brain. It can affect a person’s speech, movement, and memory, and may lead to death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke each year. Stroke is a major cause of disability for adults and kills about one out of every 20 people each year. Risk factors that may increase the possibility of having a stroke include smoking and drinking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity. There are other risk factors that you can’t control, like being over age 65 and having a personal or family history of stroke. Up to 80% of strokes may be prevented by taking advantage of these Medicare preventive services (in most cases, you’ll pay nothing for these services). 

Cardiovascular disease screening (includes blood test screening for cholesterol)

Cardiovascular disease behavioral therapy

Alcohol misuse screening and counseling

Diabetes screenings and self-management training

Nutrition therapy services and obesity screening and counseling

A healthy lifestyle is crucial to preventing strokes. 

Smoking and tobacco use cessation counseling (to stop smoking or using tobacco products)

Learn more about Medicare’s coverage of preventive services at www.medicare.gov/coverage/ preventive-screening-services.

To reduce your chance of stroke, you should consider: 

Eating healthily. Choose foods low in salt, fat, and cholesterol. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Maintaining a healthy weight. Exercise at least 30 minutes a day. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

Not smoking.

Reducing the amount of alcohol you drink. Men should have no more than two drinks per day

and women (who aren’t pregnant) should have no more than one drink per day. There’s no way to know for sure what your chances are for having a stroke, but it’s good to know there are things you can do to lower your chances of having one. Talk to your doctor about other ways you can take small steps now to improve your health. If you’re new to Medicare, your doctor will give you information about all the free screenings and preventive services that are available to you at your “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit.

fresh air outside.

Celebrate the Fourth of July with family, cookouts, fireworks, and lots of red, white, and blue! Even though it’s a holiday, you can still watch what you eat and take care of yourself by preparing ahead.

Drink plenty of water before and during the cookout to keep hydrated.

Practice these health tips to have a safe and healthy July Fourth celebration:

Try to eat lots of veggies and avoid overeating.

Instead of focusing on the food, try to concentrate on spending quality time with loved ones and getting some

Your brain is 15 minutes behind your stomach, so it takes 15 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain that it’s full. Slow down when eating!
