Each center has been talking and planning for months about what that return would look like. Would things be very different or basically remain the same? The changes that each of us went through in the last year we could not have even imagined. So many people found themselves battling depression, anxiety, and social isolation. We worried that restrictions would become a fixed part of life—but they have now become manageable choices we can incorporate into our day-to-day activities.

Several centers have garden areas that need the time, attention, and working hands. We have new clubs waiting to be created when someone can share the necessary skills. Photography, pottery, genealogy,
basket weaving, painting, etc. —any of these clubs brought to the center when we have people to share their knowledge and ingenuity with others. You don’t have to be an expert. You just need to be open to learning more about what you love and sharing it with others. We have a spaces and time slots in our buildings to help these clubs flourish. he Area Agency on Aging (AAA) provides services for many seniors in Brunswick County. These services include nutrition, transportation, and family caregiver support services. Clients who use these services may get a letter and a phone call to ask what you think about the meal programs, transportation, family caregiver, and other services offered by the AAA. Westat is the research firm who conducts the survey, and this letter and phone call from Westat is legitimate and safe. Your answers will be kept private. Any reports from the research will combine your answers as part of a group. Your participation in this research will help improve programs for older Americans. Your opinions about the services you receive will help agencies understand how well the programs are working and what changes to make.

rittany Steinkamp is the new assistant director at the Brunswick Center in Leland.
Steinkamp grew up in Wall Lake, Iowa, with her parents, brother, and sister. She lived in Madison, Wisconsin for two years. She graduated last November with a bachelor’s degree in Leisure, Youth, and Human Services from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. During her time in college, Steinkamp worked at Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls on a memory care unit. She also worked at St. Mary’s Hospital as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Steinkamp and her roommate moved to North Carolina for the warmer weather and to be near the beach. She found BSRI online. It piqued her interest because she has previous experience working with older adults. Now she’s looking forward to meeting and getting to know everyone, and to developing programs and teaching additional classes with the seniors. In her spare time, she enjoys kayaking, reading, and going to the pool or beach, and she loves any and all types of food, especially chocolate.

The Great BSRI Thrift Store Piano Raffle By Mike McGurn Thrift Stores Operations Manager Last month, we invited folks to come into our stores and play the piano and organs that we had just gotten in. Little did we know that professional touring musician and piano player Ray Tomlinson would stop by twice and grace us with his talent and beautiful playing. Below is a firsthand account of Ray’s visit, as told by Shallotte Thrift Store employee Bill Crowson. “Thursday afternoon at approximately 4:30 I’m back in the warehouse,” Crowson says. “I hear our piano out in the shop not only playing, but being played by an actual musician. I would know the sound of Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis on the dark side of the moon during a meteor shower! “I walk out and a 60-ish-year-old guy is rockin’ the ivory keys, baby—seriously rocking! By the way, this doesn't happen in the shop every day. He stops, I applaud. ‘So that piano doesn't sound out of tune,’ I say. ‘No,’ he remarks, ‘not bad at all. It’s a great piano but takes four guys to move it. I’ve been playing over forty years now with the likes of Randy Travis, Delbert McClinton, and others.’ He says, ‘I own a Yamaha electric keyboard, about 3,000 bucks, that is so refined that it can sound exactly like this solid old beauty that you have. Nobody uses these for shows anymore because they are too hard to move! You need to approach a church, or lodge, a place it can be moved to once, and that will be its permanent home.’ “He showed me how straight the keys were (none bent) and said it’s in great condition. I couldn't help myself. I said, ‘Can you put your leg out and play like Jerry Lee used to?’ and he obliged, saying, ‘The kids in the club love this. What a pleasure!’ “We talked about a couple of other players: Marcia Ball, Otis Spann. It was so very cool. As we parted I thanked him and extended my hand to shake for the first time since before COVID-19. I was so overwhelmed I didn't even think about it twice! I won't forget the whole thing anytime soon!” Ray came back a few weeks later saying he wanted to play the piano again because he liked the way it sounded. Again, he mesmerized the staff and customers who gathered around the piano to watch him play. He was so
good that several people pulled out their cell phones and began taking videos of his performance.
Take a Chance on This Piano We want to thank Ray and invite him to come back and play for us again. We hope he comes back soon because we have decided to raffle off the piano! We are holding The Great BSRI Thrift Store Piano Raffle at our Shallotte store and will pick the winner at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 3. The winner will be notified by phone at that time and need not be present to win. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10. Stop by the Shallotte store at 5302 Main St. soon and enter! You never know—you may see Ray Tomlinson pounding away at the keys, or should I say tickling the ivories, because he does both very well. Also, you could win this beautiful piano for just $5!

Three BSRI Centers Renew Excellence
N
ext time you open the door to your senior center, know that you’re setting foot in a Senior Center of Excellence. Three Brunswick County senior centers took top honors this spring when they were recertified Senior Centers of Excellence by the NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. (BSRI) strives to offer best practices to seniors, and North Carolina sets standards to use as guidelines. An uncertified senior center must meet state and federal standards. A Certified Senior Center of Merit is the next step, meeting a few additional requirements. Some senior centers—including all five Brunswick County
full-service centers—go above and beyond, and they qualify as Senior Centers of Excellence.
Three Centers Excel Again The Brunswick Centers at Shallotte, Southport, and Leland were first designated Senior Centers of Excellence in 2006. Five years later, it was time to recertify in a process called the Senior Center Operations and Program Evaluation (SCOPE). The certification process documents measurable indicators of quality, and typically, a site team from DHHS visits each center. Senior center staff compiles documentation of best practices in five major areas: outreach and access to services, programs and activities; planning, evaluation, and
Director of the Brunswick Center at Leland Veronica Le ‐McGee proudly displays the cer ficate declaring her center a Senior Center of Excellence. “We are definitely leaders in the state, having all five of our centers designated as excellent,” Le ‐McGee says. She says SCOPE is a way to communicate to our community that we go beyond the basic requirements to provide excellent services to older adults, and there is addi onal funding a ached as well. It’s a good planning and self‐evalua on tool to ensure best prac ces are in place. “I'm grateful to all of the many ideas from our seniors, since most of our programming is par cipant‐led. I'm also grateful to the many hands that went into organizing our evalua on tool, from staff to volunteers. We couldn't have done it without them,” she says.
input from older adults; staffing; operations; and physical plant. Centers of Excellence receive additional funding above centers that are uncertified. The certification will last for five years, then all three centers will recertify again.
Many Hands Helped the Certification Process Preparation for recertification was a five-year-long process, said Yvette Gosline, BSRI Chief Operating Officer. “The recertification process was extremely in-depth. We are proud of our centers for working so diligently during the pandemic,” Gosline says. “We’re proud of the directors and the entire team for meeting this goal.”

“The SCOPE recer fica on process proved to be challenging for the center in Shallo e,” says Teresa Nelson, director of the Brunswick Center at Shallo e. “Our staff are new and had no experience with SCOPE. We are very proud of how hard we worked to accomplish this task and are very happy to be recer fied as a Senior Center of Excellence.” At le , Brunswick Center at Shallo e staff gather to celebrate their recer fica on as a Senior Center of Excellence. At front are, from le , Teresa Nelson and Tonya Barnes; behind them are Blair Stanley, Brenda Ambrose, and Jus n Josephson.
“Of the 171 senior centers in North Carolina, only 90 are Centers of Excellence, and we have five of them. Who doesn't want to be excellent?” says Melissa Catle , director of the Brunswick Center at Southport. Senior Centers of Excellence also receive addi onal senior center opera ons funding annually for the term of the cer fica on, five years, she says. “The SCOPE standards are steep, especially during a pandemic,” Catle says. “All the directors were new to the process and had to dig for informa on from before we started working here, and go back five years to find things. And none of us were able to complete that fi h year, 2020. Then we had to figure out how to best put everything in a digital format, because this year, there was no site visit due to COVID.

“I’m super proud of the staff here and all of their accomplishments,” Catle says. “SCOPE is an arduous process. Many late nights and weekends were spent gathering informa on for this process. But the ending was so sweet.” Proud Southport center staff pictured

Hot July Books Keep You Cool in the Sun By Donna Ruth Morgan

each reads, personal growth, and an eye on history make this month’s books a potpourri with something for everyone. Turn down the AC or turn over with a beach umbrella and enjoy these selections. Cicely Tyson’s autobiography Just as I Am is magnetic and touching. Her intentional title choice is authenticated with spirituality and homely wisdom sprinkled throughout. While her performances transcended stereotypes, she chose every role to enhance African American representation in the arts. Tyson’s professional work won many awards and her personal passion was a force for meaningful social change. Nutshell review: This extraordinary woman’s memoir illuminates a life well-lived. R.I.P. Cicely. Of Women and Salt by Gabriela Garcia (2021) is a generational saga spanning three centuries of movement. The call of freedom motivates nine women to uproot their lives in search of better circumstances. Oppression in Cuba, El Salvador, and Mexico—and the grim realities undocumented immigrants face in the United

Kristin Hannah set The Four Winds in the 1930s Dust Bowl and provides excellent historical details. However, a teen character’s jarringly anachronistic actions and attitude detract from the plot rather than enhancing it. The shallow storyline creates an anemic successor to Grapes of Wrath—thus this popular author’s effort falls short of her previous successes. Nutshell review: Promotion of communism, an insipid heroine, and bleak, unrelenting misery create a less-than-enjoyable read.
This gothic thriller takes place in a creepy house in Edinburgh where twin sisters endured a grim childhood. Mirrorland by Carole Johnstone delves into the damage abuse inflicts on innocence, and the tension between loyalty and betrayal in damaged siblings’ relationships. Love, treachery, and revenge motivate a twisted treasure hunt that careens between past and present in a swirl of horror in hidden rooms and shocking incidents. Nutshell review: A lights-on scary story…

ur area is a peach paradise. South Carolina peaches are, by far, some of the best we’ve ever tasted. Ripe juicy local peaches begin to appear around Memorial Day and remain in local markets until Labor Day calls a halt to summer. The South Carolina Peach Council in Colombia (www.scpeach.org) notes, “Peaches are a very good source of antioxidant Vitamin C which helps the body boost its immune system. In addition, they are a good source of Vitamins A & B, energy, potassium, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and iron.” My favorite way to eat peaches

was, is, and probably always will be to simply munch a freshly washed peach still warm from the sun. However, since I usually buy at least a bag every time I hit a roadside stand, I have had to find some other ways to serve them. I’ve discovered they go well in both sweet (of course!) and savory dishes. The Peach Council offers a classic Peach Cobbler recipe. I’ve discovered they also pair well with pork and chicken. The pork-chopand-peach main course recipe below can also be made with chicken breasts—just be sure to cook them all the way through. I adapted that one for two people. But my sweet tooth told me to leave the cobbler recipe in the full amount.
Adapted from delish.com
2 Tbsp. olive oil for the pan 2 boneless pork chops (or boneless chicken breasts sliced thinly or cooked longer) 1 clove garlic, diced 2 Tbsp. parsley Salt and pepper to taste 1 bunch scallions, white part and a little green, chopped 1 Tbsp. soy sauce (low sodium) 3 medium peaches, sliced, skin on 1 Tbsp. brown sugar 1 Tbsp. butter Put olive oil in one frying pan. While it is heating, coat the chops with garlic, salt, pepper, onions, and parsley. Sauté until chops are brown on one side. At the same time, in a separate pan, sauté the peach slices in butter with the sugar. If the peaches are really sweet you can eliminate the sugar. Turn the meat over and while browning the other side, add the soy, and then the sautéed peaches .Serve and enjoy.
Perfect South Carolina Peach Cobbler Courtesy of the SC Peach Council 6 cups sliced peaches 1 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 cup self-rising flour 1 cup sugar 1 egg 6 Tbsp. butter, melted Place sliced peaches in a baking dish and sprinkle with lemon juice. Mix the flour, sugar, and egg until crumbly. Spread this mixture over the peaches. Pour melted butter over the top and bake at 375 for 30 to 35 minutes. Joan's Note: I've seen other cobbler recipes that add ginger and/or cinnamon and/or nutmeg and even blueberries to this basic cobbler. I like to mix blueberries and peaches.

Every Day Can Be Bean Day! By Mallory Balice BSRI Wellness Program Manager
B
eans are nothing short of amazing. Beans are legumes whose health benefits including plenty of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals. They help reduce cholesterol, decrease blood sugar, and increase healthy bacteria in the gut.
Beans are versatile! There are plenty of different types of beans such as pinto, kidney, navy, and black beans. Eaten regularly, beans will help improve your quality of life.
Benefits of Beans Beans are a superfood. Here are some benefits of beans:
Protein booster: A half-cup of beans may provide 7 grams of protein. Protein may help keep you full throughout the day and aid in weight loss.
Affordable: Beans are not expensive at all, and they provide all the nutrients that our bodies need to function throughout the day.
Low in Fat: Beans are lower in calories and fat than other protein sources such as chicken and turkey.
Stabilize Sugar: Beans help keep glucose levels maintained because they digest slowly.
How to Use Your Bean Beans can be the star of the show at the main meal or they can be added to salads, appetizers, and soups. Here are some ways to add more beans to your diet:
Soups: Soups are an easy way to incorporate beans. Try making a hearty bean soup such as chili or vegetable soup.
Breakfast: Add beans to an egg dish along with vegetables such as onions, spinach, and tomatoes.
Protein-Packed Chocolate Black Bean Muffins 15-ounce can black beans 3 eggs ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder ½ cup plain Greek yogurt ½ cup maple syrup 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. baking powder ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats ½ cup bittersweet chocolate chips
Hummus: Hummus is typically made from chickpeas. But try pureeing navy beans along with chickpeas. Dip into the hummus with vegetables or pita bread.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line a muffin tin with paper liners. Place all ingredients, except for the chocolate chips, in a blender. Blend until smooth.
Salads: Instead of adding grilled chicken to your salads, throw in some beans.
Pour the mixture into muffin tin and chocolate chips on top.

A Few Hot Tips for the Summer By Pat Naughton
Cool Container Plants
uly in Brunswick County is warmish, and your garden doesn’t have air conditioning. Here are a few tips to help your plants stay cool and watered this summer.
Container plants require frequent watering in the heat of summer. Move container plants to a location that has morning sun and afternoon shade. Use plastic pots instead of clay. Clay pots are porous and wick water. The potting mix dries out faster.
J
Don’t Forget Wildlife Birds need water for two reasons, drinking and preening. Water helps keep a bird’s body cool from the inside and outside. Water baths can also remove dust, loose feathers, parasites and other debris from a bird’s plumage.
Water at Night Recently Brunswick County Government Water Conservation issued a water advisory. It recommends watering lawns twice a week, long enough to ensure one inch of water for the week. Watering is recommended from midnight to 4 a.m. This is important for a couple reasons. It benefits the community by reducing the water demand during the peak morning hours. During morning peak water demand, system water pressure is reduced and irrigation heads may not function or coverage will be reduced. Watering at night also requires less water since the lawn is cooler and there is less evaporation. Evening watering is not recommended since water droplets may stay on the grass blades for a prolonged period of time, which could result in disease in the lawn. The optimum time is for the last irrigation to finish just before 4 a.m. Take a tip from golf course superintendents and water at night.
Water Less, Mulch More Established shrubs and trees don’t need watering unless they show signs of wilting. Turn irrigation off for shrubs and trees. Add mulch to help maintain moisture in the soil. Newspaper, cardboard, and grass clippings are good options for gardens and hidden areas.
Squirrels also frequent bird baths for a drink of water. If you grow tomatoes, put a container of water nearby to deter them from juicy tomatoes.
Prepare Mums for Fall Blooming Some varieties of mums will bloom early and if left on their own, they will grow leggy. To deter this and promote more fall blooms, cut mums back a third. The last pruning should be done in July.

A Na on's Strength By William Ralph Emerson What makes a na on's pillars high And its founda ons strong? What makes it mighty to defy The foes that round it throng? It is not gold. Its kingdoms grand Go down in ba le shock; Its sha s are laid on sinking sand, Not on abiding rock. Is it the sword? Ask the red dust Of empires passed away; The blood has turned their stones to rust, Their glory to decay. And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown Has seemed to na ons sweet; But God has struck its luster down In ashes at his feet. Not gold but only men can make A people great and strong; Men who for truth and honor's sake Stand fast and suffer long. Brave men who work while others sleep, Who dare while others fly... They build a na on's pillars deep And li them to the sky.
